Abstract
Molecular systems with intense exciplex luminescence are promising for the creation of OLEDs and light-transforming materials. The luminescent properties of difluoroboron meta- and para-nitrodibenzoylmethanates (1 and 2) were studied by the steady-state and time-resolved luminescence spectroscopy methods and quantum chemistry simulation. The influence of the position of the nitro group on the spectral properties of the complexes was revealed. The nitro group withdraws the electron density upon photoexcitation in the para-isomer in contrast to the meta-isomer. The bond order of the CC bond between the phenyl and chelate rings decreases in the excited relaxed state of 2, which leads to rotation of the substituent and a low quantum yield. Formation of exciplexes of 1 and 2 in benzene, toluene and polystyrene was found. The formation of the ground and excited-state electron donor-acceptor complexes based on difluoroboron nitrodibenzoylmethanates and benzene was revealed. The TDDFT method showed that the complexes are characterized by the presence of short contacts between the fluorine atom of the dye molecule and the hydrogen atoms of the aromatic hydrocarbon molecule. These contacts shorten during the transition from the ground state to the excited state. Polymeric compositions based on polystyrene (PS) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) doped with 1 and 2 were obtained. The luminescence intensity of dyes 1 and 2 increases during the transition from PMMA to PS. A significant bathochromic shift of the luminescence maximum of 1 is observed, which is associated with the formation of exciplexes and triplexes. The obtained polymeric materials are promising for the development of optical smart materials.

Helal W. Double Hybrid Density Functionals for the Electronic Excitation Energies of Linear Cyanines. J Phys Chem A 2023; 127:131-141. Abstract
The lowest bright electronic excitations of seven model linear cyanines (CN3-CN15) using 28 double-hybrid (DH) density functionals are benchmarked against accurate and recent CC3 results. Some of these DH functionals are recently designed specifically for excited electronic state calculations. In addition, CIS, CIS(D), SCS-CIS(D), and SOS-CIS(D) were also tested. Four different basis sets were used for the vertical electronic excitation calculations: cc-pVDZ, aug-cc-pVDZ, cc-pVTZ, and aug-cc-pVTZ basis. Augmented basis sets (e.g. aug-cc-pVDZ and aug-cc-pVTZ) are found to be required for accurate and consistent results using DH functionals. The DH functionals tested in this work are classified into four main groups: global double-hybrids (GDH), range-separated double-hybrids (RSDH), spin-component and spin-opposite scaling global double-hybrids (SCS/SOS-GDH), and spin-component and spin-opposite scaling range-separated double-hybrids (SCS/SOS-RSDH). Within these groups, the SCS/SOS-RSDH group of functionals is found to provide the lowest mean absolute error (MAE) values (in the range 0.020-0.148 eV) in comparison with the GDH group (0.195-0.441 eV), the RSDH group (0.186-0.511 eV), and the SCS/SOS-GDH group (0.079-0.461 eV). Of all the DH functionals and ab initio methods investigated in the present contribution, the following functionals are found to be the most accurate and consistent: SCS-ωB2GPPLYP (MAE = 0.036 eV), SOS-ωB2GPPLYP (MAE = 0.020 eV), SOS-ωB88PP86 (MAE = 0.035 eV), and SOS-ωPBEPP86 (MAE = 0.037 eV). In general, the ab initio methods tested here show mediocre performance as compared to many DH functionals.

Abstract
The vertical excitation energies of 13 BODIPY based dye sensitizers are benchmarked by means of TD-DFT, using 36 functionals from different DFT rungs. Most TD-DFT results were found to overestimate the excitation energies, and show mean absolute error (MAE) values in the range 0.2–0.5 eV. The dispersion-corrected, spin-component-scaled, double-hybrid (DSD) functionals DSD-BLYP and DSD-PBEP86 were found to have the smallest MAE values of 0.083 eV and 0.106 eV, respectively, which is close to the range of average errors found in the more expensive coupled-cluster methods. Moreover, DSD-BLYP and DSD-PBEP86 functionals show excellent consistency and quality of results (standard deviation = 0.048 eV and 0.069 eV respectively). However, the range separated hybrid (RSH) and the range separated double hybrid (RSDH) functionals were found to provide the best predictability (linear determination coefficient R2 > 0.97 eV). The excitation energies of 13 BODIPY dye sensitizers are benchmarked by means of TD-DFT, using 36 functionals. Abstract
A comparative study of the luminescence properties and crystal structure of boron difluoride 1-(anthracen-9-yl)butane-1,3-dionate (1) and their nitrogen-containing analogs with hydrogen and methyl substituents (2 and 3) has been performed. For boron difluoride beta-diketonate (1) and beta-ketoiminate with a hydrogen substituent (2), which does not create significant steric difficulties, the luminescence of crystals is determined by that of excimers and aggregates based on them. For the compounds 1-3, mechanofluorochromism has been observed, the spectral manifestation of which is different: at grinding the crystals of 1 and 2, a hypsochromic shift of the excitation and luminescence bands occurs, whereas in the case of crystals of 3, a bathochromic shift takes place. Dual luminescence has been detected for the solutions of 1. During the relaxation in the excited state of a molecule of 1 (S1 → S'1), TICT is formed. It was possible to register the short-wavelength luminescence from the LE state in the dilute solutions of 1. TICT or LE luminescence can be excited, in the case of 1, by varying the wavelength of the exciting light.

Abstract
It was previously reported that Laplace transformed local CC2 (LCC2*) provided the best agreement (MAE = 0.145 eV) when comparing vertical excitation energies to experimental λmax for a benchmark set of 17 BODIPY/Aza-BODIPY molecules. However, these energies did not agree with values obtained from canonical CC2. Here we report LCC2* computations of vertical excitation energies on the same benchmark set of molecules using a newly implemented treatment of the ground state. Comparison with resolution-of-identity approximate coupled cluster to second-order (RI-CC2) results demonstrate that the new LCC2* results agree quantitatively. Furthermore, these values can easily be corrected empirically to also provide excellent agreement with the experiment. We show that the local algebraic diagrammatic construction to second-order (LADC(2)) method exhibits the same differences between implementations as seen for LCC2. The source of the difference is traced to an improved treatment of the ground state in the local methods, which decreases agreement with the experiment (as attributed to a fortuitous cancellation of errors) but significantly improves agreement with RI-CC2. While the absolute vertical excitation energies now show larger deviations, there remains a strong linear correlation between the LCC2* results and the experiment. For the 17 BODIPY/Aza-BODIPY molecules vertical excitation energies are determined using DLPNO-STEOM-CCSD and shown to have excellent agreement with experimental λmax (MAE = 0.145 eV), which is the best of all the single-reference methods. The vertical excitation energies are determined using LCC2*, empirically corrected LCC2*, and RI-CC2 for a series of eight large BODIPYs and Aza-BODIPYs.

Abstract
The UV-Vis absorption spectra of difluoroboron β-diketonates with aromatic substituents at the β-carbon are studied thoroughly using DFT and TD-DFT with the CAM-B3LYP functional. The complicated experimental spectra of these dyes can be correctly interpreted by considering their structural features. A closer look at the calculated data shows that the conformational flexibility of these compounds markedly influences their spectral shape. For the complexes with an extended π system, several conformers with significantly different absorption spectra are present in the equilibrium mixture in solution. Introducing a donor group alters the electronic structure of the complexes, so the charge distribution asymmetry in the molecules increases and the nature of the electronic transitions changes. Thus, both types of substituents, aromatic and donor ones, affect the spectral shape. Understanding their roles may help one to explain the absorption spectra of these and similar compounds and predict their response to analytes and other factors.

Abstract
Electronic structure and optical properties of boron difluoride dibenzoylmethanate and four of its derivatives have been studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, absorption and luminescence spectroscopy and quantum chemistry (DFT, TDDFT). The relative quantum luminescence yields have been revealed to correlate with charge transfers of HOMO-LUMO transitions, energy barriers of aromatic substituents rotation and the lifetime of excited states in the investigated complexes. The bathochromic shift of intensive bands in the optical spectra has been observed to occur when the functional groups are introduced into p-positions of phenyl cycles due to destabilizing HOMO levels. Calculated energy intervals between electronic levels correlate well with XPS spectra structure of valence and core electrons.

Abstract
A number of fluorescent dyes based on BODIPY (4,4'-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene) have been studied theoretically. This paper presents the results of calculations of these BODIPY dyes in their ground and excited states, performed using DFT and TD-DFT methods, respectively. The influences of N,N-dimethylaminobenzyl, ortho-fluorophenol, and methyl substituents as well as the solvent polarity on the positions of the absorption and emission bands of the dyes were analyzed. The computational data obtained in this work were compared to the corresponding experimental data. The trends in the experimental data were found to agree with those shown by the computational data. Differences between the potential curves obtained when using linear-response (LR) and state-specific (SS) approaches for the ground and excited states are also reported. Graphical Abstract The article shows that the trends of the experimental dependencies λabs = f(Δf) and λem = f(Δf) well described by PBE0 (LR approach) and M06-2X (SS approach) calculations, respectively. The influence of substituents on the spectral characteristics of the BODIPY chromophore are analysed.

Abstract
Boron difluoride of 3-amino-1,3-diphenyl-2-propene-1-onate (1) has been synthesized and its crystal structure has been determined. The comparative studies of 1 and its oxygen analog 1,3-diphenyl-1,3-dionate (dibenzoylmethanate) of boron difluoride (2) have been performed using the methods of stationary and time-resolved spectroscopy and quantum chemical modeling. It was established that at the transition from solutions to crystals, a bathochromic shift of the spectra and a significant increase of luminescence intensity of 1 take place. The luminescent properties of solutions of 1 and 2 are similar. The peculiarities of crystal packings of 1 and 2 are responsible for differences in crystals luminescent properties. For crystals of 2, one observes the luminescence of J-aggregates and excimers, while for 1, in which a dimer is an elementary structural fragment, only the excimer luminescence is registered. A delayed excimer fluorescence of the P-type was observed for crystals of 1 and 2 at room temperature. The intensity of the delayed fluorescence of 1 is 300-fold higher than that of 2. Abstract
The vertical excitation energies of 17 boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) core structures with a variety of substituents and ring sizes are benchmarked using time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) with nine different functionals combined with the cc-pVTZ basis set. When compared to experimental measurements, all functionals provide mean absolute errors (mean AEs) greater than 0.3 eV, larger than the 0.1-0.3 eV differences typically expected from TD-DFT. Due to the high linear correlation of TD-DFT results with experiment, most functionals can be used to predict excitation energies if corrected empirically. Using the CAM-B3LYP functional, 0-0 transition energies are determined, and while the absolute difference is improved (mean AE = 0.478 eV compared to 0.579 eV), the correlation diminishes substantially (R(2) = 0.961 to 0.862). Two very recently introduced charge transfer (CT) indices, q(CT) and d(CT), and electron density difference (EDD) plots demonstrate that CT does not play a significant role for most of the BODIPYs examined and, thus, cannot be the source of error in TD-DFT. To assess TD-DFT methods, vertical excitation energies are determined utilizing TD-HF, configuration interaction CIS and CIS(D), equation of motion EOM-CCSD, SAC-CI, and Laplace-transform based local coupled-cluster singles and approximate doubles LCC2* methods. Moreover, multireference CASSCF and CASPT2 vertical excitation energies were also obtained for all species (except CASPT2 was not feasible for the four largest systems). The SAC-CI/cc-pVDZ, LCC2*/cc-pVDZ, and CASPT2/cc-pVDZ approaches are shown to have the smallest mean AEs of 0.154, 0.109, and 0.100 eV, respectively; the utility of the LCC2* approach is demonstrated for eight extended BODIPYs and aza-BODIPYs. We found that the problems with TD-DFT arise from difficulties in dealing with the differential electron correlation (as assessed by comparing CCS, CC2, LR-CCSD, CCSDR(T), and CCSDR(3) vertical excitation energies for five compounds) and from contributions of multireference character and double excitations (from analysis of the CASSCF wave functions).

Abstract
The 0-0 energies of 80 medium and large molecules have been computed with a large panel of theoretical formalisms. We have used an approach computationally tractable for large molecules, that is, the structural and vibrational parameters are obtained with TD-DFT, the solvent effects are accounted for with the PCM model, whereas the total and transition energies have been determined with TD-DFT and with five wave function approaches accounting for contributions from double excitations, namely, CIS(D), ADC(2), CC2, SCS-CC2, and SOS-CC2, as well as Green's function based BSE/GW approach. Atomic basis sets including diffuse functions have been systematically applied, and several variations of the PCM have been evaluated. Using solvent corrections obtained with corrected linear-response approach, we found that three schemes, namely, ADC(2), CC2, and BSE/GW allow one to reach a mean absolute deviation smaller than 0.15 eV compared to the measurements, the two former yielding slightly better correlation with experiments than the latter. CIS(D), SCS-CC2, and SOS-CC2 provide significantly larger deviations, though the latter approach delivers highly consistent transition energies. In addition, we show that (i) ADC(2) and CC2 values are extremely close to each other but for systems absorbing at low energies; (ii) the linear-response PCM scheme tends to overestimate solvation effects; and that (iii) the average impact of nonequilibrium correction on 0-0 energies is negligible.

Abstract
Dual emissive luminescence properties of solid-state difluoroboron β-diketonate-poly(lactic acid) (BF2bdk-PLA) materials have been utilized as biological oxygen sensors. Dyes with red-shifted absorption and emission are important for multiplexing and in vivo imaging, thus hydroxyl-functionalized dinaphthoylmethane initiators and dye-PLA conjugates BF2dnm(X)PLA (X = H, Br, I) with extended conjugation were synthesized. The luminescent materials show red-shifted absorbance (~435 nm) and fluorescence tunability by molecular weight. Fluorescence colors range from yellow (~530 nm) in 10 - 12 kDa polymers to green (~490 nm) in 20 - 30 kDa polymers. Room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) are present under a nitrogen atmosphere. For the iodine-substituted derivative, BF2dnm(I)PLA, clearly distinguishable fluorescence (green) and phosphorescence (orange) peaks are present, making it ideal for ratiometric oxygen-sensing and imaging. Bromide and hydrogen analogues with weaker relative phosphorescence intensities and longer phosphorescence lifetimes can be used as highly sensitive, concentration independent, lifetime-based oxygen sensors or for gated emission detection. BF2dnm(I)PLA nanoparticles were taken up by T41 mouse mammary cells and successfully demonstrated differences in vitro ratiometric measurement of oxygen.

Abstract
First-principle simulations aimed at accurately reproducing the excited state properties of a large series of ladder-type π-conjugated organic molecules containing heteroatoms (Si, S, B, O, and N) have been performed. In particular, time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations relying on several global and range-separated hybrid functionals have been carried out in conjunction with three variations of the polarizable continuum model (PCM), namely, the linear-response (LR), corrected linear-response (cLR), and state-specific (SS) approaches. For this series of molecules, similar to many borate derivatives, the cLR-PCM-TD-M06-2X approach can be used to reproduce the auxochromic effects that tune the 0-0 energies. However, TD-DFT yields rather large absolute deviations with respect to the experimental 0-0 energies. These systematic errors can be reduced by more than 0.1 eV when scaled opposite spin-configuration interaction singles with a double correction [SOS-CIS(D)] vertical calculations are combined to the PCM-TD-DFT results. This study demonstrates that such a "hybrid" scheme, where the geometrical and vibrational parameters, as well as the solvation effects, are determined with PCM-TD-DFT, whereas the transition energies are obtained with a wavefunction-based method, offers a useful compromise between accuracy and computational cost.
