Kinetic evaluation of removal of odorous contaminants in a three-stage biological air filter

Impact of p-cresol on hydrogen sulfide and ammonia treatment by biotrickling filter and the production of nitrous oxide

Biotrickling filter (BTF) is often used for purification of waste gas from swine houses, with vital information still needed regarding interaction effects among multiple gas pollutants removal and also the formation of byproducts especially nitrous oxide (N2O, a strong greenhouse gas) due to the relative high NH3 concentration level compared to other gases. In this study, gas removal and N2O production were compared between two BTFs, where the inlet gas of BTF-1 contained NH3 and H2S while p-cresol was additionally supplied to BTF-2. At inlet load (IL) between 3.67 and 18.91 g m-3 h-1, removal efficiencies of NH3 exceeded 95% for both BTFs. As alternative strategy, adding thiosulfate improved H2S removal. Interestingly, presence of p-cresol to some extent promoted H2S removal at IL of 0.56 g m-3 h-1possibly due to effect on pH value of circulating solution. Similar to NH3, removal efficiencies of p-cresol were higher than 95% at an average IL of 2.98 g m-3 h-1. Gas residence time, pH of circulating solution and inlet loading were identified as key factors affecting BTF performance, but the response of individual gas compound to these factors was not consistent. Overall, p-cresol enhanced N2O generation although the effects were not always significant. High-throughput sequencing results showed that Proteobacteria accounted for the largest proportion of relative abundance and BTF-2 had much richer microbial diversity compared to BTF-1. Thermomonas, Comamonas, Rhodanobacter and other bacterial genus capable of denitrification were detected in both BTFs, and their corresponding abundances in BTF-2 (10.9%, 8.7% and 5.2%) were all greater than those in BTF-1 (0.4%, 0.3% and 2.0%), indicating that more denitrification may occur within BTF-2 and higher N2O could have been generated. This study provided evidence that organic gas components, served as carbon source, may increase the N2O production from BTF when treating waste gases containing NH3.

Mitigation Strategies of Air Pollutants for Mechanical Ventilated Livestock and Poultry Housing—A Review

The fast development of large-scale intensive animal husbandry has led to an increased proportion of atmospheric pollution arising from livestock and poultry housing. Atmospheric pollutants, including particulate matter (PM), ammonia (NH3), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), and greenhouse gases (GHG), as well as other hazardous materials (e.g., gases, bacteria, fungi and viruses), have significant influences upon the local atmospheric environment and the health of animals and nearby residents. Therefore, it is imperative to develop livestock and poultry housing mitigation strategies targeting atmospheric pollution, to reduce its negative effects on the ambient atmosphere and to promote sustainable agricultural production. In this paper, we summarize the various strategies applied for reducing outlet air pollutants and purifying inlet air from mechanical ventilated livestock and poultry housing. This review highlights the current state of knowledge on the removal of various atmospheric pollutants and their relative performance. The potential optimization of processes and operational design, material selection, and other technologies, such as electrostatic spinning, are discussed in detail. The study provides a timely critical analysis to fill the main research gaps or needs in this domain by using practical and stakeholder-oriented evaluation criteria.

Interactions and microbial variations in a biotrickling filter treating low concentrations of hydrogen sulfide and ammonia

A lab-scale biotrickling filter (BTF) packed with porcelain Rasching ring and ceramsite was applied for co-treating of low concentrations of hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) and ammonia (NH₃), as major pollutants typically found in e.g., intensive livestock production facilities. In this study, the outlet gas concentrations of H₂S and NH₃ were used for indicators if the treated gas reached odor-free condition. Overall, excellent removal efficiencies were obtained for both H₂S and NH₃ in the BTF during Stage I (H₂S alone) and Stage II (H₂S and NH₃). Specifically, the H₂S outlet concentration was below the detection limit (∼3.6 ppbv) and the NH₃ outlet concentration was less than 0.4 ppmv when the inlet concentrations of H₂S and NH₃ were around 1.8 ppmv and 35.3 ppmv, respectively. In this case, the running empty bed residence time was 10.2 s. During Stage II, the outlet H₂S concentration was decreased significantly when the inlet NH₃ concentration was increased, likely due to the influence by pH. Meanwhile, the outlet nitrous oxide (N₂O) concentration was kept low (<2% NH₃) during the experiment, suggesting a proper operation of the BTF. After the inlet gas shifted from H₂S alone at Stage I to H₂S and NH₃ at Stage II, the main sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (SOB) species in the BTF switched from Acidithiobacillus to Thiobacillus.

Evaluation of clay aggregate biotrickling filters for treatment of gaseous emissions from intensive pig production

Treatment of ventilation air from livestock production by biological airfiltration has emerged as a cost-effective technology for reduction of emissions of odorants and ammonia. Volatile sulfur compounds from livestock production include H2S and methanethiol, which have been identified as potentially important odorants that are not removed sufficiently by biological air filters. Light-expanded clay aggregates (Leca(®)) is a biotrickling filter material that contains iron oxides, which can oxidize H2S and methanethiol, and thus potentially may help to remove these two compounds in biological air filters. This study used on-line PTR-MS measurements to investigate the performances of two Leca(®) biotrickling filters (abraded Leca(®) filter and untreated Leca(®) filter) for removal of odorants and ammonia emitted from an experimental pig house. The results indicated that the abraded Leca(®) filter had a similar or slightly better capability for removing odorants than the untreated Leca(®) filter. This may be due to the enlargement of the surface area by the friction process. The volatile sulfur compounds, however, were not removed efficiently by either of the two Leca(®) filters. Kinetic analysis of a ventilation controlled experiment during the first period indicated that Grau second-order kinetics could be applied to analyze the removal of sulfur compounds and other odorants, whereas the Stover-Kincannon model could only be applied to analyze the removal of odorants other than sulfur compounds, partly due to the limitation of mass transfer of these compounds in the biotrickling filters. In the last measurement period, a production of dimethyl disulfide and dimethyltrisulfide coinciding with strongly enhanced removal of methanethiol was observed for the untreated filter. This was assumed to be enhanced by an incidence of low local air velocity in the filter and indicated involvement of iron-catalyzed reactions in the removal of sulfur compounds.
