Abstract
A series of luminescent fac-[Re(CO)3(L)(NN)](+) complexes, where L is a pyridine or an imidazole and NN is the 1,10-phenanthroline subunit of mixed donor pentadentate thioether crowns have been synthesised and their luminescence properties have been analysed. Then, heterometallic Re(i)/Au(i) complexes, with the Au(i) fragment bonded directly to the imidazole ligand, and heterometallic Re(i)/Ag(i) complexes, with the silver fragment coordinating the S-donor thioether linker of the rings have also been prepared. Analysis of their luminescence properties showed a considerable blue shift of the emission maxima for the Re(i)/Ag(i) derivatives, upon coordination of the silver centre to the S-donor atoms of the aliphatic chain of the macrocyclic units.

Abstract
A novel luminescent Zn(2+) ions chemosensor, a cyclometalated platinum(II) bipyridyl acetylide complex, was designed. Of particular significance is that it shows a high sensitivity towards Zn(2+) ions without interference from other biologically important cations in acetonitrile. The tautomerization of amide favors detecting Zn(2+) ions among other HTM (heavy and transition metal) ions in aqueous systems.

Abstract
A number of platinum(II) complexes with ammine or 1R,2R-diaminocyclohexane as carrier ligands and 1-(methoxy-substituted benzyl) azetidine-3,3-dicarboxylate as leaving groups were synthesized and spectrally characterized. Biological evaluation in vitro showed that some of compounds showed positive antitumor activity. In particular, complex 3a, (1R,2R-diaminocyclohexane)[1-(3-methoxylbenzyl) azetidine-3,3-dicarboxylato)-O,O'] platinum(II), possessed a potent antitumor effect comparable to cisplatin and/or oxaliplatin, and very low toxicity in vivo. Preliminary antitumor mechanism of 3a has been investigated by cell apoptosis assays compared with cisplatin and oxaliplatin.

Abstract
A series of novel cisplatin-type platinum complexes, formulated as [PtA2(OCOCH2OR)2] (A2 = two monoamines or one diamine, R is an alkyl group), were designed, characteristic of alkoxyacetate as carboxylato ligands. The pertinent compounds were prepared and characterized by elementary analyses, IR, 1H NMR, and ESI-MS spectra. The cytotoxic activities of compound 1a in vitro toward HL-60 human leukemia and BEL-7402 human hepatocellular carcinoma cell lines were pioneeringly studied. Then, compounds 1b-3d were evaluated for their in vitro cytotoxicity against Ramos human lymphoma, 3AO human ovarian carcinoma, and A549 human non-small cell lung cancer cell lines. Most of them showed better cytotoxic activity than carboplatin against above selected cell lines.

Abstract
A new anionic ruthenium(II) complex, (Et4N)[Ru(tpyA18C6)(CN)3] (tpyA18C6=N-[4'-(2,2':6',2''-terpyridyl)]-1,4,7,10,13-pentaoxa-16-azacyclohexadodecane), has been synthesized and characterized. The complex was found to show pronounced solvatochromic behavior and, when dissolved in solution, changed its color from purple to yellow when the solvent system was varied from pure acetonitrile to pure water. Its absorption and emission energies in various solvents showed a linear dependence of the Gutman's acceptor number. The characteristic photoluminescence and electrochemiluminescence (ECL) of the complex were also found to be progressively quenched as the proportion of water in a water/acetonitrile mixture increased. Large changes in the chemical shifts of the 1H NMR and 13C NMR signals of [Ru(tpyA18C6)(CN)3]- in different solvents were observed. The complex has also been demonstrated to serve as a mobile-phase additive in high-performance liquid chromatography for separation of metal cations and amino acids. Comparison studies with the crown-free analogue, (Et4N)[Ru(tpy)(CN)3] (tpy = 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine), showed that other than the ion-pair effect, the allosteric host-guest interaction provided by the presence of the pendant crown was essential to the separation performance of the complex. Indirect detection of nonabsorbing analytes has been achieved by monitoring the absorbance changes of the eluent at the metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) absorption band maximum of the complex at 445 nm. The effects of pH, ionic strength, and polarity of the mobile phase as well as the complex concentration on the selectivity and resolution have also been studied.

Abstract
A series of palladium(II) complexes with 1,2-bis[di(benzo-15-crown-5)phosphino]ethane ligand (dbcpe), [Pd(dbcpe)X2] (X = Cl 1, Br 2 and I 3), have been successfully synthesised and characterised. The X-ray crystal structure of dbcpe has also been determined. The cation-binding properties of the complexes have been studied and the stability constants with alkali metal cations determined. The crown-free analogue of dbcpe, 1,2-bis[bis(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)phosphino]ethane (ddmppe), and the related complexes have also been prepared and comparison studies have been made.

Abstract
[Pt(tbtrpy)X]Y complexes (tbtrpy = 4,4',4' '-tBu3-2,2';6',2' '-terpyridine) exhibit charge-transfer absorption bands that can be drastically red-shifted to long-wavelength visible absorptions with arylthiolates as X. Further extension to the near-IR (NIR) region is achieved with 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ-) as Y-, resulting in black absorbers with continuous UV-vis-NIR absorptions and opening up potential applications in energy research.

Abstract
Eight new camphorato platinum complexes have been synthesized and evaluated for their in vitro cytotoxicity against HL-60 human leukemia, 3AO human ovarian carcinoma, BEL-7402 human hepatocarcinoma, and A549 human lung carcinoma cell lines. Most complexes showed good cytotoxic activity against the above-selected cell lines. Among the complexes, two compounds were assayed for their in vivo antitumor activity against LS-174T human colon carcinoma cells implanted in mice. One complex exhibited not only higher in vivo antitumor activity, but also less toxicity than oxaliplatin when it was administered intravenously at a dose of 6 mg/kg three times.

Abstract
A series of luminescent dinuclear gold(I) complexes with different crown ether pendants, [Au(2)(PwedgeP)(S-B15C5)(2)] [S-B15C5 = 4'-mercaptobenzo-15-crown-5, P(wedge)P = bis(dicyclohexylphosphino)methane (dcpm) (1), bis(diphenylphosphino)methane (dppm) (2)] and [Au(2)(P(wedge)P)(S-B18C6)(2)] [S-B18C6 = 4'-mercaptobenzo-18-crown-6, P(wedge)P = dcpm (3), dppm (4)], and their related crown-free complexes, [Au(2)(P(wedge)P)(SC(6)H(3)(OMe)(2)-3,4)(2)] [P(wedge)P = dcpm (5), dppm (6)], were synthesized. The low-energy emission of the mercaptocrown ether-containing gold(I) complexes are tentatively assigned as originated from states derived from a S --> Au ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) transition. The crown ether-containing gold(I) complexes showed specific binding abilities toward various metal cations according to the ring size of the crown pendants. Spectroscopic evidence was provided for the metal-ion-induced switching on of the gold...gold interactions upon the binding of particular metal ions in a sandwich binding mode.

Abstract
Luminescent Ln-Pt2 metallohairpin complexes have been developed, and their intercalative recognition with DNA has been demonstrated with linear dichroism spectroscopy. The heterotrimetallic complexes were formed in a one-step reaction, by assembly of an aminopolycarboxylate ligand, a platinum terpyridine unit, and the lanthanide salt. The metallohairpin complexes bear a neutral lanthanide moiety and two positively charged platinum-containing intercalating units. The Nd(III) analogues are luminescent in the near infrared, and this near-IR luminescence is retained upon binding to DNA. The DNA recognition was demonstrated by linear dichroism spectroscopy. The linear dichroism spectra suggested that the complexes bind perpendicular to the DNA helical axis, confirming intercalative recognition accompanied by dramatic stiffening of DNA, which suggests bis-intercalation of the complex.
