Gas-phase properties and fragmentation behavior of cationic, dinuclear iron chloride clusters Fe(2)Cl(n)()(+) (n = 1-6)

Reduction from copper(II) to copper(I) upon collisional activation of (pyridine)(2) CuCl(+)

Electrospray ionization of dilute aqueous solutions of copper(II) chloride-containing traces of pyridine (py) as well as ammonia permits the generation of the gaseous ions (py)(2) Cu(+) and (py)(2) CuCl(+) , of which the latter is a formal copper(II) compound, whereas the former contains copper(I). Collision-induced dissociation of the mass-selected ions in an ion-trap mass spectrometer (IT-MS) leads to a loss of pyridine from (py)(2) Cu(+) , whereas an expulsion of atomic chlorine largely prevails for (py)(2) CuCl(+) . Theoretical studies using density functional theory predict a bond dissociation energy (BDE) of BDE[(py)(2) Cu(+) -Cl] = 125 kJ mol(-1) , whereas the pyridine ligand is bound significantly stronger, i.e. BDE[(py)CuCl(+) -py] = 194 kJ mol(-1) and BDE[(py)Cu(+) -py] = 242 kJ mol(-1) . The results are discussed with regard to the influence of the solvation on the stability of the Cu(I) /Cu(II) redox couple.

Complexation of transition metals by 3-azidopropionitrile. An electrospray ionization mass spectrometry study

Most complexes of azides and transition metals involve the N(3)(-) azide anion as a ligand other than an organic azide. Complexes of organic azides with metals are involved in biological applications and in the deposition of nitrenes on metal surfaces, producing nitride layers for semi-conductors preparation; this makes the study of these interactions an important issue. This work describes a study of the complexation of nickel and cobalt by 3-azidopropionitrile by means of electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). Complexes were obtained from solutions of NiCl(2) and CoCl(2) in methanol/water. In the case of nickel, other NiX(2) salts were investigated (where X = Br or NO(3)) and other solvents were also studied (notably ethanol/water). All complexes detected were single positively charged, with various stoichiometries, some resulted from the fragmentation of the ligand, the loss of N(2), and HCN being quite common. The most abundant cations observed were [Ni(II)AzAzX](+), where X = Cl, Br, NO(3). Some of the complexes showed solvation with methanol/ethanol/water. Metal reduction was observed in complexes where a radical was lost, resulting from the homolytic cleavage of a metal-nitrogen bond. Collision induced dissociation (CID) experiments followed by tandem mass spectrometry (MS-MS) analysis were not absolutely conclusive about the coordination site. However, terminal ions observed from the fragmentation routes were explained by a proposed gas-phase mechanism. Density functional theory calculations were carried out and provided structures for some complexes, pointing to the possibility of 3-azidopropionitrile acting as a mono- or a bidentate ligand.

Mass Spectrometric and Quantum Chemical Studies of the Thermodynamics and Bonding of Neutral and Ionized LnCl, LnCl2, and LnCl3 Species (Ln = Ce, Lu)

The mass spectral patterns of CeCl3(g) and LuCl3(g) and appearance energies for the identified ions were measured using a Nier-type mass spectrometer coupled with a Knudsen cell. The molecular ion CeCl3+ was found to be considerably less stable in comparison to LuCl3+. Partial pressures and sublimation enthalpies of LnCl3(s) to monomeric LnCl3(g) and dimeric Ln2Cl6(g) species were obtained in the ranges of 882-1028 (Ln = Ce) and 850-1004 K (Ln = Lu). The contribution of dimeric Ce2Cl6(g) species to equilibrium vapors of CeCl3(s) is considerably smaller than the Lu2Cl6(g) contribution in LuCl3(s) vapors. The measurements were supplemented by quantum chemical ab initio studies of structures, energetics, and vibrational frequencies of neutral and singly ionized LnCl, LnCl2, and LnCl3 species (Ln = Ce, Lu). The theoretical appearance energies of different ions, calculated from the energies of the gaseous species, are in good agreement with experimental data. The fragmentation energies of LnCl, LnCl2, and LnCl3 were also computed and compared with the mass spectral patterns of respective vapor species. The Mulliken and natural bond orbital electron population methods were applied for the systematic analysis of the bonding scheme in molecules and cations.

High-Level ab Initio Thermochemical Data for Halides of Chromium, Manganese, and Iron

The thermochemistry of the transition-metal fluorides and chlorides MF(n)() and MCl(n)() (M = Cr, Mn, Fe; n = 1, 2) has been characterized by high-level ab initio electronic structure methods. Geometries and harmonic vibrational frequencies were computed at the B3LYP level of theory using triple-zeta basis sets including diffuse and polarization functions. Heats of formation were computed from isogyric reaction energies at the CCSD(T) level using high-quality basis sets, including corrections for core-valence correlation and scalar relativistic effects. To investigate the possible linearity of the ground states of CrCl(2) and CrF(2), we performed geometry optimizations for these species at the CCSD(T) level using large basis sets. In both cases, a bent ((5)B(2)) minimum structure was located, but the bent structure is only slightly below the linear form, which was found to be a transition state. For all of the investigated halides, polynomial fits were carried out for the heat capacity and the standard enthalpy and entropy in the 300-3000 K temperature range.

Bond dissociation energies and structures of CuNO(+) and Cu(NO)(2)(+)

The bond dissociation energies of CuNO(+), Cu(NO)(2)(+), and CuAr(+) are determined by means of guided ion beam mass spectrometry and quantum chemical calculations. From the experiment, the values D(0)(Cu(+)-NO) = 1.13 +/- 0.05, D(0)(ONCu(+)-NO) = 1.12 +/- 0.06, D(0)(Cu(+)-Ar) = 0.50 +/- 0.07, and D(0)(Cu(+)-Xe) = 1.02 +/- 0.06 eV are obtained. The computational approaches corroborate these results and provide additional structural data. The relative values of D(0)(Cu(+)-NO) and D(0)(Cu(+)-Xe) are consistent with the approximately thermoneutral formation of CuXe(+) upon interacting CuNO(+) with xenon. The sequential bond dissociation energies of Cu(NO)(2)(+) exhibit a trend similar to those of other Cu(I) complexes described in the literature. Although metathesis of nitric oxide to N(2) and O(2) is of considerable interest, no evidence for N-N- or O-O-bond formations in Cu(NO)(n)(+) ions (with n up to 3) is obtained within the energy range studied experimentally.

Experimental and theoretical studies of diatomic gold halides

The diatomic gold halides AuX are studied by means of Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectroscopy and ab initio theory at a quasi-relativistic CCSD(T) level of theory. A thermokinetic approach is used to determine the bond-dissociation energies of neutral AuCl, AuBr, and AuI as well as cationic AuI+, i.e., D(0)(Au-Cl) = 66 +/- 3 kcal/mol, D(0)(Au-Br) = 50 +/- 5 kcal/mol, as well as the brackets 52 kcal/mol < D(0)(Au-I) < 64 kcal/mol and 54 kcal/mol < D(0)(Au+-I) < 66 kcal/mol at 0 K. These values allow an evaluation of previous experimental and theoretical data concerning diatomic gold halides.
