Abstract
Using ferrocene-based ligand systems, a series of heterobimetallic architectures of the general formula [PdmLn]x+ were designed with the aim of installing an opening and closing mechanism that would allow the release and binding of guest molecules. Palladium complex formation was achieved through coordination to pyridyl groups, and using 2-, 3-, and 4-pyridyl derivatives provided access to defined PdL, PdL2, and Pd2L4 structures, respectively. The supramolecular complexes were characterized using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and infrared spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and elemental analysis, and for some examples density functional theory calculations and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. 1H NMR spectroscopy was used to investigate disassembly and reassembly of the metallosupramolecular structures. The former was induced by cleavage of the relatively labile Pd-Npyridyl bonds with the introduction of the competing ligands N,N'-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) and Cl- (using tetrabutylammonium chloride) to yield [Pd(DMAP)4]2+ and [PdCl4]2-, respectively. The process was found to be reversible for several of the heterodimetallic compounds, with the addition of H+ or Ag+ triggering complex reassembly. Guest binding studies with several architectures revealed interactions with the anionic guests p-toluenesulfonate and octyl sulfate, but not with neutral molecules. Furthermore, the release of guests was reversibly induced with Cl- ions as a stimulus.

Abstract
Thermodynamically favored simultaneous coordination of Pt(ii) corners with aza- and carboxylate ligands yields tricomponent coordination complexes with sophisticated structures and functions, which require careful structural characterization to paint accurate depiction of their structure-function relationships. Previous reports claimed that heteroleptic coordination of cis-(Et3P)2PtII with tetrapyridyl porphyrins (M'TPP, M' = Zn or H2) and dicarboxylate ligands (XDC) yielded 3D tetragonal prisms containing two horizontal M'TPP faces and four vertical XDC pillars connected by eight Pt(ii) corners, even though such structures were not supported by their 1H NMR data. Through extensive X-ray crystallographic and NMR studies, herein, we demonstrate that self-assembly of cis-(Et3P)2PtII, M'TPP, and four different XDC linkers having varied lengths and rigidities actually yields bow-tie (⋈)-shaped 2D [{cis-(Et3P)2Pt}4(M'TPP) (XDC)2]4+ complexes featuring a M'TPP core and two parallel XDC linkers connected by four heteroleptic PtII corners instead of 3D prisms. This happened because (i) irrespective of their length (∼7-11 Å) and rigidity, the XDC linkers intramolecularly bridged two adjacent pyridyl-N atoms of a M'TPP core via PtII corners instead of connecting two cofacial M'TPP ligands and (ii) bow-tie complexes are entropically favored over prisms. The electron-rich ZnTPP core of a representative bow-tie complex selectively formed a charge-transfer complex with highly π-acidic 1,4,5,8,9,12-hexaazatriphenylene-2,3,6,7,10,11-heaxacarbonitrile but not with a π-donor such as pyrene. Thus, this work not only produced novel M'TPP-based bow-tie complexes and demonstrated their selective π-acid recognition capability, but also underscored the importance of proper structural characterization of supramolecular assemblies to ensure accurate depiction of their structure-property relationships.

Abstract
Copper phosphate metalloligands [Cu(X-dipp)(Pyterpy)]2 [X = H (1), Br (2)], exemplifying expanded 4,4'-bipyridine type molecules, have been synthesized by reacting 4'-(4-pyridyl)-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine (Pyterpy) and para substituted 2,6-diisopropylphenyl phosphate (X-dippH2) with copper acetate. The pendant N,N-ends of dimeric copper phosphates 1 and 2 have been forced to engage in further coordination by limiting the concentration of Pyterpy in the reaction mixture to yield rare Pyterpy bridged corner-shared polymeric copper phosphates [Cu2(X-dippH)(X-dipp)(Pyterpy)(H2O)]n [X = Cl (3), Br (4), I (5)]. The formation of 1-5 is supported by spectroscopic and analytical data. The solid state structures of these compounds have further been confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Soluble dimeric complexes 1 and 2 have been assessed for their in vitro anti-tumour properties against human breast and colorectal cancer cell lines. The DNA cleavage, protein cleaving and cytotoxicity assays revealed that these compounds are effective in cleaving DNA, while the activity of 1 as an anti-tumor agent is better than 2.

Abstract
The ITO/active material/Au sandwiched devices of a cobalt(ii) bis-terpyridine complex decorated with two triphenylamine motifs display appealing flash-type resistive switching with a large ON/OFF ratio (>103) and low operating voltages (<±3 V). In contrast, devices with the triphenylamine-appended terpyridine ligand show WORM-type memory behaviour.

Abstract
Self-assembly is a powerful synthetic tool that has led to the development of one-, two- and three-dimensional architectures. From MOFs to molecular flasks, self-assembled materials have proven to be of great interest to the scientific community. Here we describe a strategy for the construction and de-construction of a supramolecular structure through unprecedented photo-induced assembly and dis-assembly. The combination of two approaches, a [n×1]-directional bonding strategy and a ligand photo-dissociation strategy, allows the photo-induced assembly of a polypyridyl RuII precursor into a discrete molecular square. Diffusion-ordered NMR spectroscopy confirmed the synthesis of a higher volume species, while the identity of the species was established by high-resolution mass spectrometry and single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The self-assembled square is not obtained by classical thermal techniques in similar conditions, but is obtained only by light-irradiation. The tetraruthenium square has an excited-state lifetime (135 ns), 40 times that of its mononuclear precursor and its luminescence quantum yield (1.0 %) is three orders of magnitude higher. These remarkable luminescence properties are closely related to the relatively rigid square structure of the tetraruthenium assembly, as suggested by slow radiationless decay and transient absorption spectroscopy. The results described herein are a rare example of photo-induced assembly and dis-assembly processes, and can open the way to a new avenue in supramolecular chemistry, leading to the preparation of structurally organized supermolecules by photochemical techniques.

Abstract
Extensive studies of various families of conjugated molecules in metal|molecule|metal junctions suggest that the mechanism of conductance is usually tunnelling for molecular lengths < ca. 4 nm, and that for longer molecules, coherence is lost as a hopping element becomes more significant. In this work we present evidence that, for a family of conjugated, redox-active metal complexes, hopping may be a significant factor for even the shortest molecule studied (ca. 1 nm between contact atoms). The length dependence of conductance for two series of such complexes which differ essentially in the number of conjugated 1,4-C6H4- rings in the structures has been studied, and it is found that the junction conductances vary linearly with molecular length, consistent with a hopping mechanism, whereas there is significant deviation from linearity in plots of log(conductance) vs. length that would be characteristic of tunnelling, and the slopes of the log(conductance)–length plots are much smaller than expected for an oligophenyl system. Moreover, the conductances of molecular junctions involving the redox–active molecules, [M(pyterpy)2]2+/3+ (M = Co, Fe) have been studied as a function of electrochemical potential in ionic liquid electrolyte, and the conductance–overpotential relationship is found to fit well with the Kuznetsov–Ulstrup relationship, which is essentially a hopping description.

Recently, the construction of discrete multiferrocenyl organometallic structures via coordination-driven self-assembly has attracted considerable attention because of their interesting electrochemical properties and wide range of applications in the areas of organometallic chemistry, electrochemistry, and materials science. Coordination-driven self-assembly has proven to be a simple yet highly efficient approach for the preparation of various multiferrocenyl metallacycles and metallacages with predetermined shapes and sizes as well as the distribution and total number of ferrocenes. This review focuses on the recent progress in the construction of a variety of discrete multiferrocenyl metallacycles and metallacages via coordination-driven self-assembly. The characterization, the structure-related electrochemical properties, and the applications of these multiferrocenyl supramolecular architectures are also discussed.

Abstract
Iron(ii) and zinc(ii) complexes of bis[2,6-di(pyrazol-1-yl)pyrid-4-yl]disulfide assemble into tetranuclear metallacycles according to ES-MS, DOSY NMR and conductivity data. The iron complex exhibits a thermal spin-state equilibrium in solution, which the iron centres appear to undergo independently of each other.

Abstract
A number of novel ruthenium(II) polypyridine complexes have been designed and synthesized for use as photosensitizers in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) due to their rich photophysical properties such as intense absorption, long-lived lifetimes, high emission quantum yields and unique redox characteristics. Many of these complexes exhibit photophysical behavior that can be readily controlled through a careful choice of ligands and/or substituents. With this perspective, we review the design and general synthetic methods of some polypyridine ligands based on bipyridine, phenanthroline, terpyridine and quaterpyridine with/without anchoring groups with a view to correlate functionality of ligand structures with the observed photophysical, electroredox and power conversion efficiency of some examples of Ru(II) polypyridyl complexes that have been reported and particularly used in the DSSCs applications. The main interest, however, is focused on showing the development of new polypyridine ligand materials containing long-range electron transfer motifs such as the alkenyl, alkynyl and polyaromatic donor functionalities.

Abstract
Two self-assembled redox-active cages are presented. They are obtained by coordination-driven self-assembly of a tetra-pyridile tetrathiafulvalene ligand with cis-M(dppf)(OTf)2 (M = Pd or Pt; dppf = 1,1′-bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene; OTf = trifluoromethane-sulfonate) complexes. Both species are fully characterized and are constituted of 12 electro-active subunits that can be reversibly oxidized.

Abstract
The title compound, [Yb(C5HF6O2)2(C20H14N4)(H2O)]Cl·CH3OH·H2O, adopts an eight-coordinated geometry around the YbIII atom consisting of a 4′-(4-pyridyl)-2,2′:6′,2′′-terpyridine (pytpy) ligand, two 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoroacetylacetonate (hfac) anions and an aqua ligand. In the solid state, the compound forms supramolecular chains running along the b-axis via intermolecular hydrogen bonds between the Yb—OH2 unit and the N-atom donor of the 4-pyridyl pendant of pytpy, with an O⋯N distance of 2.686 (4) Å. A chloride counter-anion and lattice methanol and water solvent molecules occupy a hydrophilic columnar space along the coordination chains. O—H⋯Cl hydrogen bonds occur. The two water molecules and the four trifluoromethyl groups are disordered over two sets of sites, each with different occupancy ratios.

Abstract
The synthesis of three endofunctionalized two-dimensional supramolecular metallacycles including two [2 + 2] rhomboids (5 and 6) and a [3 + 3] hexagon (7) is reported. The resulting self-assembled supramolecular structures, containing several nitrobenzyl moieties at their interior surface, have been fully characterized by multinuclear NMR ((31)P and (1)H) and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. A significant C-H...O hydrogen bonding between the nitrobenzyl acceptor and the edge molecules of the supramolecular architecture is observed in the small rhomboid 5 and this interaction gradually decreases upon the enlargement of the resulting polygonal structures from a small rhomboid 5 through a large rhomboid 6 to a hexagon 7. Molecular modeling with the MMFF force field gives a possible conformation of each self-assembly in different solvents and shows that the hydrophilic nitrobenzyl moiety prefers to be buried in the cavity of the resulting polygonal structures in nonpolar solvents, thus forming hydrogen bonds with the peripheral component building units.

Abstract
Coordination-driven self-assembly that combines rigid ditopic Pt(II) metal acceptors and bis-pyridyl organic donors provides a facile means of synthesizing well-defined metallacycles of predetermined size and geometry. Functionalization of the component acceptor or donor building blocks allows for the preparation of multifunctional supramolecular materials wherein the stoichiometry and position of individual functional moieties can be precisely controlled. The design, self-assembly, and applications of polyfunctional supramolecules incorporating functional moieties with host-guest, photonic, materials, and self-organizational properties is discussed.
