Triimidosulfonic acid and organometallic triimidosulfonates: S(+)-N(-) versus S=N bonding

Imidosulfonate scorpionate ligands in lanthanide single-molecule magnet design: slow magnetic relaxation and butterfly hysteresis in [ClDy{Ph2PCH2S(NtBu)3}2]

Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) harbour vast opportunities for potential pioneering applications upon optimization like big data storage and quantum computing. Lanthanides were found to be highly suitable candidates in the design of such molecules, as they intrinsically hold a large unquenched orbital momentum and a strong spin-orbit coupling, warranting a high magnetic anisotropy. An indispensable element in successfully tailoring SMMs is the ligand design. Polyimido sulfur ligands offer a promising choice because the polar S⁺-N^--bond facilitates both electronic and geometric adaptability to various f-metals. In particular, the acute N-Ln-N bite angle generates advantageous magnetic properties. The [Ph₂PCH₂S(NtBu)₃]^- anion, introduced from [(thf)₃K{Ph₂PCH₂S(NtBu)₃}] (2) to a series of complexes [ClLn{Ph₂PCH₂S(NtBu)₃}₂] with Ln = Tb (3a), Dy (3b), Er (3c), Ho (3d), and Lu (3e), provides tripodal shielding of the metal's hemisphere as well as a side-arm donation of a soft phosphorus atom. For the Tb and Er complexes 3a and 3d, slow magnetic relaxation (U_eff = 235 and 34.5 cm^-1, respectively) was only observed under an applied dc field. The dysprosium congener 3b, however, is a true SMM with relaxation at zero field (U_eff = 66 cm^-1) and showing a butterfly hysteresis close to 3.5 K. Upon magnetic dilution with the diamagnetic and isostructural lutetium complex 3e or application of a magnetic field, the energy barrier to spin reversal is increased to 74 cm^-1.

Slow Magnetic Relaxation in Mono- and Bimetallic Lanthanide Tetraimido-Sulfate S(NtBu)4 2- Complexes

Lanthanide ions are particularly well-suited for the design of single-molecule magnets owing to their large unquenched orbital angular momentum and strong spin-orbit coupling that gives rise to high magnetic anisotropy. Such nanoscopic bar magnets can potentially revolutionize high-density information storage and processing technologies, if blocking temperatures can be increased substantially. Exploring non-classical ligand scaffolds with the aim to boost the barriers to spin-relaxation are prerequisite. Here, the synthesis, crystallographic and magnetic characterization of a series of each isomorphous mono- and dinuclear lanthanide (Ln=Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er) complexes comprising tetraimido sulfate ligands are presented. The dinuclear Dy complex [{(thf)2 Li(NtBu)2 S(tBuN)2 DyCl2 }2  ⋅ ClLi(thf)2 ] (1c) shows true signatures of single-molecule magnet behavior in the absence of a dc field. In addition, the mononuclear Dy and Tb complexes [{(thf)2 Li(NtBu)2 S(tBuN)2 LnCl2 (thf)2 ] (2b,c) show slow magnetic relaxation under applied dc fields.

Exchange Coupling in Binuclear Manganese and Cobalt Complexes with the Tetraimido Sulfate Anion [S(NtBu)4]2

The (hetero)bimetallic complexes [Cl₂Mn(NtBu)₂S(tBuN)₂Mn{ClLi(THF)₃}₂] (1), [(acac)Co(NtBu)₂S(tBuN)₂Co(acac)] (2), and [(acac)Co(NtBu)₂S(tBuN)₂Li(THF)₂] (3), with THF = tetrahydrofuran and acac = acetylacetonate [H₂C(C(O)Me)₂], were synthesized and investigated for their magnetic properties. While the two different Mn^II sites in 1 gave a weak coupling of J = -1.00 cm^-1, we could observe an appreciable antiferromagnetic coupling of J = -6.08 cm^-1 between the two Co^II cations in 2, proving the tetraimido sulfate anion to be a challenging but promising linker to enhance magnetic communication between paramagnetic centers. The heterobimetallic complex 3 seems a versatile platform for magnetically interesting d/d, f/d, or f/f mixed-metal complexes.

Additions to N-Sulfinylamines as an Approach for the Metal-free Synthesis of Sulfonimidamides: O-Benzotriazolyl Sulfonimidates as Activated Intermediates

Sulfonimidamides are obtained in moderate to very good yields from the key intermediates O-benzotriazolyl sulfonimidates, which are formed by reacting aryldiazonium tetrafluoroborates, N-tritylsulfinylamine, and N-hydroxybenzotriazole hydrate in a process mediated by a tertiary amine. The formation of the sulfonimidate proceeds in inexpensive and environmentally benign dimethyl carbonate as the solvent, it does not require anhydrous conditions, and the product yields generally exceed 70 %. The substrate scope is broad, and a wide range of sensitive organic functionalities is well tolerated. The reactions probably proceed via aryl radicals formed from diazonium cations with assistance from both the tertiary amine and the sulfinylamine.

Synthesis, structure and reactivity study of magnesium amidinato complexes derived from carbodiimides and N,N'-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-1,4-diaza-butadiene ligands

We report an amidinato ligand-supported series of magnesium complexes obtained from the insertion of a magnesium-carbon bond into a carbon-nitrogen double bond of different carbodiimides and α-diimine ligands. The magnesium complexes [Mg(CH2Ph){CyN[double bond, length as m-dash]C(CH2Ph)NCy}]2 (), [Mg(CH2Ph){(i)PrN[double bond, length as m-dash]C(CH2Ph)N(i)Pr}]2 () and the homoleptic [Mg{(t)BuN[double bond, length as m-dash]C(CH2Ph)N(t)Bu}2] () (Cy = cyclohexyl, (i)Pr = isopropyl, (t)Bu = tert-butyl) were prepared by the reaction of dibenzyl magnesium [Mg(CH2Ph)2(Et2O)2] with the respective carbodiimides either in 1 : 1 or 1 : 2 molar ratio in toluene. The analogous reaction of [Mg(CH2Ph)2(Et2O)2] with the N,N'-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-1,4-diaza-1,3-butadiene (Dipp2DAD) ligand afforded the corresponding homoleptic magnesium complex [Mg{DippN[double bond, length as m-dash]C(CH2Ph)CH2NDipp}2] () (Dipp = 2,6 diisopropylphenyl) in good yield. The solid-state structures of magnesium complexes were confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. It was observed that in each case, a magnesium-carbon bond was inserted into the carbon-nitrogen double bond of either carbodiimides or Dipp2DAD resulting in a monoanionic amido-imino ligand. In a further reaction between and N-aryliminopyrrolyl ligand 2-(2,6-(i)Pr2C6H3N[double bond, length as m-dash]CH)C4H3NH (ImpDipp-H) in 1 : 2 molar ratio, a new magnesium complex [Mg(ImpDipp)2{CyN[double bond, length as m-dash]C(CH2Ph)NHCy}] (), with one amidinato and two aryliminopyrrolyl ligands in the coordination sphere, was obtained in good yield. In contrast, the homoleptic magnesium complex reacted with one equivalent of N-aryliminopyrrolyl ligand (ImpDipp-H) to produce another mixed ligated magnesium complex [Mg{DippN[double bond, length as m-dash]C(CH2Ph)CH2NDipp}(ImpDipp)] (), with a benzylated DAD ligand and aryliminopyrrolyl ligands in the coordination sphere. Further reaction of complex with benzyl alcohol (PhCH2OH) afforded the third mixed ligated magnesium complex [Mg{DippN[double bond, length as m-dash]C(CH2Ph)CH2NDipp}(OCH2Ph)2] () in very good yield. The magnesium complexes were characterised using standard analytical/spectroscopic techniques and their solid-state structures were established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis.

Transition metal complexes containing the S(NtBu)42− tetraimidosulfate dianion

Three novel metal complexes [(acac)₂Cu₂(NtBu)₄S] (3), [Li(thf)₄]₂[I₄Cd₂(NtBu)₄S] (4) and [(thf)₂Li{(SiMe₃)₂N}Zn(NtBu)₄S] (5) are prepared from the intended transmetalation of the dilithium complex of N,N′,N′′,N′′′-tetrakis(tert-butyl)tetraimidosulfate [(thf)₄Li₂(NtBu)₄S] (1).

Imino Sulfinamidines: Synthesis and Coordination Chemistry of a Novel Class of Chiral Bidentate Ligands

The new imino sulfinamidine ligand PhS(NHt-Bu)=NC(Me)=N(C6H3-2,6-iPr2), LH (11) was synthesized from N-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)acetamidine (9) and N-tert-butyl phenylsulfinimidoyl chloride (10). Reaction of LH (11) with ZnEt2 or AlMe3 gave the complexes LZnEt (12) and LAlMe2 (13), respectively. The structures of 12 and 13 were determined by X-ray diffraction and were shown to contain L as a kappa2-N1,N5 bidentate ligand in a six-membered chelate. Formation of the magnesium complex (LMgN(TMS)2 x L2Mg) (14) from 11, MgI2, and KN(SiMe3)2 highlighted a secondary coordination mode of L, binding through the sulfinamidine nitrogens in a four-membered chelate.

S=N versus S+-N-: an experimental and theoretical charge density study

To elucidate the bonding situation in the widely discussed hypervalent sulfur nitrogen species, the charge density distributions rho(r) and related properties of four representative compounds, methyl(diimido)sulfinic acid H(NtBu)(2)SMe (1), methylene-bis(triimido)sulfonic acid H(2)C[S(NtBu)(2) (NHtBu)](2) (2), sulfurdiimide S(NtBu)(2) (3), and sulfurtriimide S(NtBu)(3) (4), were determined experimentally by high-resolution low-temperature X-ray diffraction experiments (T = 100 K). This set of molecules represents an ideal frame of reference for the comparison of SN bonding modes, because they contain short formal S=N double bonds as well as long S-N single bonds, some of them influenced by inter- or intramolecular hydrogen bonds. For comparison, the gas-phase ab initio calculations of the four model compounds, H(NMe)(2)SMe, H(2)C[S(NMe)(2)(NHMe)](2), S(NMe)(2), and S(NMe)(3), were performed. The topological features were found to be not particularly sensitive with respect to different substituents R (R = H, Me, tBu). In this paper, it is documented that theory and experiment differ in the eigenvalues of the Hessian matrix because of systematically differing positions of the bond critical points but agree very well concerning the spatial Laplacian distribution and the distinct polarization of all investigated sulfur-nitrogen bonds. Both recommend the S(+)-N(-) formulation of sulfur nitrogen bonds in 1 and 2 since all nitrogen atoms are found to be sp(3) hybridized. The planar SNx (x = 2, 3) units in the diimide 3 and the triimide 4 reveal characteristics of m-center-n-electron systems. For none of the investigated S-N bonds, a classical double bond formulation can be supported. This is further substantiated by the NBO/NRT approach. Valence expansion to more than eight electrons at the sulfur atom can definitely be excluded to explain the bonding.

Synthesis and Characterization of Binucleating Bis(amidinate) Ligands and Their Dialuminum Complexes

Two general routes to binucleating bis(amidinate) ligands based on dibenzofuran and 9,9-dimethylxanthene backbones are reported. The free-base form of one of the ligands, (Ph,Mes)L(DBF)H(2), forms a 1:1 adduct with acetone. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction of this adduct reveals bidentate H-bonding of the bis(amidine) to the ketone oxygen. Bond lengths suggest that the individual H-bonds are relatively weak, yet IR spectroscopy shows a significant -26 cm(-1) shift for the carbonyl stretch relative to free acetone. Additionally, the new dialuminum complexes (i)(Pr)L(DBF)Al(2)Me(4) (3), (i)(Pr)L(Xan)Al(2)Me(4) (4), (t)(Bu,Et)L(DBF)Al(2)Me(4) (5), and (t)(Bu,Et)L(Xan)Al(2)Me(4) (6) are prepared by reaction of Al(2)Me(6) with the bis(amidines) in toluene solution. (1)H NMR spectroscopic studies indicate that 3 and 4 interact weakly with certain Lewis bases (DMSO, DMF, pyridine) to effect the exchange of the Al-bound Me groups. Other bases, such as THF and TMEDA, fail to interact. Solid-state structures for 3 and 4 are reported.

From the tetra(amino) phosphonium cation, [P(NHPh)4]+, to the tetra(imino) phosphate trianion, [P(NPh)4]3−, two-faced ligands that bind anions and cations

The tetraanilino phosphonium cation, [P(N(H)Ph)4]+, 1+, is sequentially deprotonated by Bu(n)Li in thf. The deprotonation reaction of the chloride derivative, Cl, was monitored by (31)P NMR, which revealed the successive formation of the neutral [P(N(H)Ph)3(NPh)], 2, the monoanionic [P(N(H)Ph)2(NPh)2]-, 3-, the dianionic [P(N(H)Ph)(NPh)3]2-, 4(2-), and finally the trianionic species [P(NPh)(4)](3-), (3-). Considering the isoelectronic relationship of oxo, =O, and imino groups, =NR, as well as hydroxy, -OH, and amino groups, -N(H)R, the neutral complex corresponds to phosphoric acid, H3PO4, whereas the anions 3-, 4(2-) and 5(3-) are analogues of dihydrogen phosphate, H2PO4-, monohydrogenphosphate, HPO4(2-), and orthophosphate ions, PO4(3-), respectively. Solid state structures were obtained of 1Cl, 2LiCl(thf)(2), 3Li(thf)(3.5), 3Li(2)Cl(thf)(4.25), 3Li(2)Cl(thf)(6) and 5Li(4)Cl(thf)(4). All systems provide two separate N-P-N chelation sites at opposite ligand faces, either consisting of the di(amino) arrangement P(NH)(2), acting as a double H-bond donor, the di(imino) arrangement PN(2), donating two electron pairs, or the mixed amino imino arrangement P(N)(NH), which supplies both electron pair and H-donor site. Interesting in this aspect is the mixed amino imino derivative 3- which has the ability to chelate a Lewis acid, such as a metal ion, at one face and a Lewis base, such as an anionic or neutral donor at the opposite ligand face. The formation of 1-D aggregates and the entrapment of lithium chloride are key characteristics of the supramolecular structures of the discussed complexes.
