Abstract
A series of trianion assemblies of hexaazatriphenylenehexacarbonitrile {HAT(CN)6} and hexaazatrinaphthylenehexacarbonitrile {HATNA(CN)6} with three Fe(II) or Co(II) ions: {cryptand(K+)}3·{HATNA(CN)6·(FeIII2)3}3-·2C6H4Cl2 (1), {cryptand(K+)}3·{HATNA(CN)6·(CoIII2)3}3-·2C6H4Cl2 (2), and (CV+)3·{HAT(CN)6·(CoIICl2)3}3-·0.5(CVCl)·2.5C6H4Cl2 (3) are synthesized (CVCl = crystal violet). Salt 1 has a χMT value of 9.80 emu K mol-1 at 300 K, indicating a contribution of three high-spin FeII (S = 2) and one S = 1/2 of HATNA(CN)6˙3-. The χMT value increases with cooling up to 12.92 emu K mol-1 at 28 K, providing a positive Weiss temperature of +20 K. Such behavior is described using a strong antiferromagnetic coupling between S = 2 and S = 1/2 with J1 = -82.1 cm-1 and a weaker FeII-FeII antiferromagnetic coupling with J2 = -7.0 cm-1. As a result, the spins of three Fe(II) ions (S = 2) align parallel to each other forming a high-spin S = 11/2 system. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations support a high-spin state of CoII (S = 3/2) for 2 and 3. However, the χMT value of 2 and 3 is 2.25 emu K mol-1 at 300 K, which is smaller than 6 emu K mol-1 calculated for the system with three independent S = 3/2 and one S = 1/2 spins. In contrast to 1, the χMT values decrease with cooling to 0.13-0.36 emu K mol-1 at 1.9 K, indicating that spins of cobalt atoms align antiparallel to each other. Data fitting using PHI software for the model consisting of three high-spin Co(II) ions and an S = 1/2 radical ligand shows very large CoII-L˙3- coupling for 2 and 3 with J1 values of -442 and -349 cm-1. The CoII-CoII coupling via the ligand (J2) is also large, being -100 and -84 cm-1, respectively, which is more than 10 times larger than that of 1. One of the reasons for the J2 increase may be the shortening of the Co-N(L) bonds in 3 and 2 to 2.02(2) and 1.993(12) Å. DFT calculations support the population of the quartet state for the Co3 system, whereas the high-spin decet (S = 9/2) state is positioned higher by 680 cm-1 and is not populated at 300 K. This is explained by the large CoII-CoII coupling. Thus, a balance between J1 and J2 couplings provides parallel or antiparallel alignment of the FeII and CoII spins, leading to high- or low-spin ground states of {L·[MII(Hal)2]3}3-.

Abstract
Many biologically important paramagnetic metal ions are characterized by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy to use as spin probes to investigate the structure and function of biomolecules. Though nickel(II) ions are an essential trace element and part of many biomolecules, the EPR properties are least understood. Herein, the EPR and optical absorption spectra measured at 300 K for Ni(II) ions diluted in two different diamagnetic hosts are investigated and reported. The EPR spectrum of a polycrystalline Ni/Mg(3-methylpyrazole)6 (ClO4 )2 [Ni/MMPC] shows two transitions at X-band frequency (~9.5 GHz), suggesting the zero-field splitting parameter (D) is larger than the resonance field of the free electron (Ho ). This incomplete and complex spectrum is successfully analyzed to obtain EPR parameters. The EPR spectrum of the polycrystalline Ni/Zn(pyrazole)6 (NO3 )2 [Ni/ZPN] shows a triplet spectrum indicating D < Ho . A detailed analysis of single-crystal EPR data yielded the spin Hamiltonian parameters. The optical absorption spectra are deconvoluted to understand the symmetry of the coordination environment in the complex.

Abstract
The control of the redox reactivity, magnetic and optical properties of the different redox states of complexes with redox‐active ligands permits their rational use in catalysis and materials science. The redox‐chemistry of octahedrally coordinated high‐spin CoII complexes (three unpaired electrons) with one redox‐active bisguanidine ligand and two acetylacetonato (acac) co‐ligands is completely changed by replacing the acac by hexafluoro‐acetylacetonato (hfacac) co‐ligands. The first one‐electron oxidation is metal‐centered in the case of the complexes with acac co‐ligands, giving diamagnetic CoIII complexes. By contrast, in the case of the less Lewis‐basic hfacac co‐ligands, the first one‐electron oxidation becomes ligand‐centered, leading to high‐spin CoII complexes with a radical monocationic guanidine ligand unit (four unpaired electrons). Ferromagnetic coupling between the spins on the metal and the organic radical in solution is evidenced by temperature‐dependent paramagnetic NMR studies, allowing to estimate the isotropic exchange coupling constant in solution. Second one‐electron oxidation leads to high‐spin CoII complexes with dicationic guanidine ligand units (three unpaired electrons) in the presence of hfacac co‐ligands, but to low‐spin CoIII complexes with radical monocationic, peralkylated guanidine ligand (one unpaired electron) in the presence of acac co‐ligands. The analysis of the electronic structures is complemented by quantum‐chemical calculations on the spin density distributions and relative energies of the possible redox isomers.

Abstract
Octahedrally coordinated cobalt(II) complexes with a redox‐active bisguanidine ligand and acac co‐ligands were synthesized and their redox chemistry analysed in detail. The N−H functions in a bisguanidine ligand with partially alkylated guanidino groups form N−H⋅⋅⋅O hydrogen bonds with the acac co‐ligands, thereby massively influencing the redox chemistry. For all complexes, the first one‐electron oxidation is metal‐centred, leading to CoIII complexes with neutral bisguanidine ligand units. Further one‐electron oxidation is ligand‐centred in the case of Co–bisguanidine complexes with fully alkylated guanidino groups, giving CoIII complexes with radical monocationic bisguanidine ligands. On the other hand, the hydrogen‐bond strengthening upon oxidation of the Co–bisguanidine complex with partially alkylated guanidino groups initiates metal reduction (CoIII→CoII) and two‐electron oxidation of the guanidine ligand, providing the first example for the stimulation of redox‐induced electron transfer by interligand hydrogen bonding.

Abstract
A new four-coordinated high-spin Co(II) complex was synthesized through the reactions of Co(NSC)2 with bathocuproine, by the diffusion method, resulting in an infinite one-dimension chain. Both static and dynamic magnetic properties were measured. The magnetic properties investigation shows that the single CoII ion properties dominate the magnetic behavior in the complex. Despite the presence of a four-coordinated single CoII ion, no SMM properties were exhibited by the complex.

Abstract
Two CoII-based coordination polymers, namely poly[(μ4-biphenyl-2,2',5,5'-tetracarboxylato){μ2-1,3-bis[(1H-imidazol-1-yl)methyl]benzene}dicobalt(II)], [Co2(C16H6O8)(C14H14N4)2]n or [Co2(o,m-bpta)(1,3-bimb)2]n (I), and poly[[aqua(μ4-biphenyl-2,2',5,5'-tetracarboxylato){1,4-bis[(1H-imidazol-1-yl)methyl]benzene}dicobalt(II)] dihydrate], {[Co2(C16H6O8)(C14H14N4)2(H2O)2]·4H2O}n or {[Co2(o,m-bpta)(1,4-bimb)2(H2O)2]·4H2O}n (II), were synthesized from a mixture of biphenyl-2,2',5,5'-tetracarboxylic acid, i.e. [H4(o,m-bpta)], CoCl2·6H2O and N-donor ligands under solvothermal conditions. The complexes were characterized by IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, single-crystal X-ray diffraction and powder X-ray diffraction analysis. The bridging (o,m-bpta)4- ligands combine with CoII ions in different μ4-coordination modes, leading to the formation of one-dimensional chains. The central CoII atoms display tetrahedral [CoN2O2] and octahedral [CoN2O4] geometries in I and II, respectively. The bis[(1H-imidazol-1-yl)methyl]benzene (bimb) ligands adopt trans or cis conformations to connect CoII ions, thus forming two three-dimensional (3D) networks. Complex I shows a (2,4)-connected 3D network with left- and right-handed helical chains constructed by (o,m-bpta)4- ligands. Complex II is a (4,4)-connected 3D novel network with ribbon-like chains formed by (o,m-bpta)4- linkers. Magnetic studies indicate an orbital contribution to the magnetic moment of I and II due to the longer Co...Co distances. An attempt has been made to fit the χMT results to the magnetic formulae for mononuclear CoII complexes, the fitting indicating the presence of weak antiferromagnetic interactions between the CoII ions.

Abstract
The reaction of Co(CH3COO)2·4H2O with the Schiff base ligand LH4 derived from o-vanillin and tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane produces the dinuclear mixed-valence complex [CoIICoIII(LH2)2(CH3COO)(H2O)](H2O)3 (1), which has been investigated using IR spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, HFEPR spectroscopy, and ac susceptibility measurements at various frequencies, temperatures, and external magnetic fields. The structure of 1 consists of neutral molecules in which two cobalt ions with distorted octahedral geometries, CoIIO6 and CoIIIN2O4, are bridged by two deprotonated -CH2O- groups of the two LH22- ligands. 1 completes a series with Cl, Br, NO3, and NCS anions published before by different authors. Low-temperature HFEPR measurements reveal that the ground electronic state of the Co(II) center in 1 is a highly anisotropic Kramers doublet; the effective g values of 7.18, 2.97, and 1.96 are frequency-independent over the frequency ranges 200-630, 200-406, and 200-300 GHz for the highest, intermediate, and lowest geff values, respectively. The two lower values were not seen at higher frequencies because the magnetic field was not high enough. Temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility and field-dependent magnetization data confirm high magnetic anisotropy of the easy axis type. Complex 1 behaves as a single-ion magnet under a small applied external field and demonstrates two relaxation modes that strongly depend on the applied static dc field. The observation of multiple relaxation pathways clearly distinguishes 1 from the Cl and Br analogues.

Abstract
Doubly end-on azido-bridged mixed-valence trinuclear cobalt complex, [Co3(L)2(N3)6(CH3OH)2] (1) is afforded by employing a potential monoanionic tetradentate-N2O2 Schiff base precursor (2-[{[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl]imino}methyl]-6-methoxyphenol; HL). Single crystal X-ray structure reveals that in 1, the adjacent Co(II) and Co(III) ions are linked by double end-on azido bridges and thus the full molecule is generated by the site symmetry of a crystallographic twofold rotation axis. Complex 1 is subjected on different spectral analysis such as IR, UV-vis, emission and EPR spectroscopy. On variable temperature magnetic study, we observe that during cooling, the χMT values decrease smoothly until 15K and then reaches to the value 1.56 cm(3) K mol(-1) at 2 K. Complex 1 inhibits the cell growth on human lung carcinoma (A549 cells), human colorectal (COLO 205 and HT-29 cells), and human heptacellular (PLC5 cells) carcinoma cells. Complex 1 exhibits anti-mycobacterial activity and considerable efficacy on Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv ATCC 27294 and H37Ra ATCC 25177 strains.

Abstract
Reactions of 2-(1-imidazole)-1-hydroxyl-1,1'-ethylidenediphosphonic acid (ImhedpH4) and cobalt or nickel salts under hydrothermal conditions lead to four new metal phosphonates with two types of structures: M3(ImhedpH)2(H2O)(4).2H2O [M=Co(II) (1) and Ni(II) (2)] and M(ImhedpH3)2(H2O)2 [M=Co(II) (3) and Ni(II) (4)]. Compounds 1 and 2 are isostructural and show a layered structure made up of M3(ImhedpH)2(H2O)4 trimer units. These trimers are connected by edge-sharing of the {Co(2)O6} octahedra, forming an undulating chain. The adjacent chains are fused through the coordination of the phosphonate oxygen atom from one chain to the Co(2) atom of the other, thus generating a two-dimensional layer containing 4-, 8-, and 16-membered rings. The imidazole groups are grafted on the two sides of the layer. Compounds 3 and 4 are also isostructural and show a mononuclear structure with extensive hydrogen bond interactions. Magnetic measurements reveal that both 1 and 2 exhibit canted antiferromagnetism at 2.6 and 5.0 K, respectively. Below these temperatures, slow relaxation is observed from the ac susceptibility measurements corresponding to the spin-glass-like behaviors.

Abstract
A series of metal-organic hybrid compounds were synthesized using two new phosphonic acids, pyridyl-4-phosphonic acid and p-xylylenediphosphonic acid (H(2)O(3)PCH(2)C(6)H(4)CH(2)PO(3)H(2)). The phosphonic acid ligands have been synthesized from their corresponding bromides following two different types of reactions. The reaction of pyridyl-4-phosphonic acid with three different divalent metal salts results in the formation of molecular structures of different dimensionality. The reaction of Cu(II) with the phosphonic acid under hydrothermal conditions yields a three-dimensional (3D) open framework structure having the molecular formula [Cu(4)(NC(5)H(4)-PO(3))(4)(H(2)O)(10)] (1). The reactions with Mn(II) and Zn(II) salts with the same phosphonic acid resulted in a two-dimensional layered and a dinuclear compound with molecular formulas [Mn(3)(NC(5)H(4)-PO(3))(4)(H(2)O)(6)(ClO(4))(2)] (2) and [Zn(2)(NHC(5)H(4)-PO(3)H)(2)Cl(4)] (3), respectively. Compound 1 crystallizes in the triclinic crystal system having space group P with structural parameters a = 7.4564(15) Angstrom, b = 9.1845(19) Angstrom, c = 11.582(2) Angstrom, alpha = 100.842(3) degrees, beta = 104.303(3) degrees, gamma = 94.774(3) degrees, and Z = 1. Compound 2 crystallizes in the triclinic crystal system, space group P, with structural parameters a = 7.6871(14) Angstrom, b = 10.576(2) Angstrom, c = 14.470(3)Angstrom, alpha = 81.340(3) degrees, beta = 81.561(3) degrees, gamma = 68.757(3) degrees, and Z = 2, whereas compound 3 crystallizes in a monoclinic crystal system with space group P2(1)/n. The structural parameters are as follows: a = 8.4969 (5) Angstrom, b = 9.3911 (5) Angstrom, c = 12.3779 (6) Angstrom, beta = 90.860(17) degrees, and Z = 4. The pyridylphosphonate ligand shows different ligation behavior toward the three divalent metal ions. On the other hand, p-xylylenediphosphonic acid on reaction with Co(II) formed a 3D compound [Co(2)(O(3)PCH(2)C(6)H(4)CH(2)PO(3))(2)(H(2)O)(2)] (4) with a layered and pillared structure. Compound 4 crystallizes in an orthorhombic crystal system with space group Pnma. The structural parameters are a = 21.744(4) Angstrom, b = 5.6744(10) Angstrom, c = 4.7927(9) Angstrom, and Z = 4.

Abstract
A three-dimensional homometallic complex [Co(5)(mu(3)-OH)(2)(btec)(2)(bpp)](n) is built from the mixed hydroxide/carboxylate bridged cobalt(ii) chains linked by the 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylate (btec(4-)) anion and 1,3-bis(4-pyridyl)-propane molecule (bpp). Within each chain, two mu(3)-OH-bridged metal triangles connect to each other by sharing a common vertex to give rise to a bow-tie type Co(5)(mu(3)-OH)(2) subunit, which is joined to adjacent subunits by four mu(1,1)-carboxylate bridges to form a step-like metal-oxygen backbone. The magnetic studies revealed that the coexistence of ferromagnetic and antiferrimagnetic interactions resulted in a ferrimagnetic-like behavior of the homometallic chains. Below a critical temperature (T(N) = 12.5 K), bulk antiferromagnetic ordering was observed at low field due to the weak interchain antiferromagnetic interactions. A metamagnetic transition occurred at a magnetic field of ca. 5 kOe at 2 K.

Abstract
Two isostructural mixed-valence vanadium phosphonoacetates H2(DABCO)[V(IV)O(H2O)V(III)(OH)(O3PCH2CO2)2].2.5H2O (1) and H2(PIP)[V(IV)O(H2O)V(III)(OH)(O3PCH2CO2)2].2.5H2O (2) have been synthesized. They crystallize in the orthorhombic space group Pnna with a = 7.0479(10) A, b = 15.307(2) A, and c = 17.537(3) A for 1 and a = 7.0465(9) A, b = 15.646(2) A, and c = 17.396(2) A for 2. X-ray single-crystal diffraction reveals that 1 and 2 have a three-dimensional open framework featuring 16-ring ellipsoid channels that are filled with doubly protonated 1,4-diazabicyclo[2,2,2]octanium/piperazinium cations and water molecules. According to the classification in metal-organic frameworks, 1 and 2 contain infinite (-O-V-)(infinity) chains that are cross-linked by "metalloligand" [VO(H2O)(O3PCH2CO2)2](4-) into a 3-D net of the sra topology. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility of 1 shows that the chi(m)T value in the range of 60-320 K is constant of 1.105 cm3 K mol(-1)/V2 unit, and upon further cooling, the chi(m)T value rapidly increases to 1.81 cm3 K mol(-1) at 2 K. The corresponding effective magnetic moment (mu(eff))/V2 unit varies from 2.97 mu(B) at 320 K to 3.80 mu(B) at 2 K. The magnetic data in the range of 2-320 K follow the Curie-Weiss law with C = 1.074 cm3 K mol(-1) and Theta= -1.34 K.

Abstract
Following the strategy of using polyfunctional phosphonic acids for the synthesis of open-framework metal phosphonates, the phosphonocarboxylic acid (H2O3PCH2)2NCH2C6H4COOH was used in the hydrothermal synthesis of new Ba phosphonates. Its decomposition led to the first open-framework barium phosphonate [Ba3(O3PCH2NH2CH2PO3)2(H2O)4].3H2O. The synthesis was also successfully performed using iminobis(methylphosphonic acid), (H2O3PCH2)2NH, as a starting material, and the synthesis was optimized to obtain as a pure material. The reaction setup as well as the pH are the dominant parameters, and only a diffusion-controlled reaction led to the desired compound. The crystal structure was solved from single-crystal data: monoclinic; C2/c; a=2328.7(2), b=1359.95(7), and c=718.62(6) pm; beta=98.732(10) degrees ; V=2249.5(3)x10(6) pm3; Z=4; R1=0.036; and wR2=0.072 (all data). The structure of [Ba3(O3PCH2NH2CH2PO3)2(H2O)4].3H2O is built up from BaO8 and BaO10 polyhedra forming BaO chains and layers, respectively. These are connected to a three-dimensional metal-oxygen-metal framework with the iminobis(methylphosphonic acid) formally coating the inner walls of the pores. The one-dimensional pores (3.6x4 A) are filled with H2O molecules that can be thermally removed. Thermogravimetric investigations and temperature-dependent X-ray powder diffraction demonstrate the stability of the crystal structure up to 240 degrees C. The uptake of N,N-dimethylformamide and H2O by dehydrated samples is demonstrated. Furthermore, IR, Raman, and 31P magic-angle-spinning NMR data are also presented.

Abstract
The syntheses and crystal structures of the first copper(I) phosphonate, Cu2(H3L)(bipy)(2).2H2O 1 (H5L = C4HO3N(CH2PO3H2)2), which is also the first example of metal phosphonates formed by a type of organic reaction, and a novel luminescent Mn(II) squarate diphosphonate, {Mn[NH(CH2PO3H)2](H2O)2}2{Mn(C4O4)(H2O)4}.(C4H2O4) 2, have been reported. The structure of 1 features a layer architecture in which the Cu(I) centers are three coordinated, and the newly formed ligand acts as a bidentate metal linker. Compound 2 is composed of 1D chains of Mn[NH(CH2PO3H)2](H2O)2, 1D chains of {Mn(C4O4)(H2O)4}, as well as the neutral squaric acid molecules. These three types of building units are interconnected via hydrogen bonding.
