Abstract
Molecular-level understanding of the acid/base properties of heterogeneous catalysts requires the development of selective spectroscopic probes to establish structure-activity relationships. In this work we show that substituting the surface protons in oxide supports by isolobal N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) Ag cations and measuring their 109Ag nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) signatures enables to probe the speciation and to evaluate the corresponding Brønsted acidity of the substituted OH surface sites. Specifically, a series of silver N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) Ag(i) complexes of general formula [(NHC)AgX] are synthesized and characterized, showing that the 109Ag NMR chemical shift of the series correlates with the Brønsted acidity of the conjugate acid of X- (i.e., HX), thus establishing an acidity scale based on 109Ag NMR chemical shift. The methodology is then used to evaluate the Brønsted acidity of the OH sites of representative oxide materials using Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP-)enhanced solid-state NMR spectroscopy.

Abstract
Derivatization of (NHC)M-Cl (M = Ag, Au) with selected sulfur donors from the family of dialkyldithiophosphates and bis(2-mercapto-1-methylimidazolyl)borate ligands gave a series of heteroleptic mononuclear complexes. In single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, Ag(I) complexes adopted a trigonal planar geometry, while Au(I) complexes are near-linear. TD-DFT and hole-electron analyses of the selected complexes gave insight into the electronic features of the metal complexes. In vitro cellular tests were conducted on the human cancerous breast cell line MCF-7 using 2 and 8. The antibacterial activities of complexes 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, and IPr-Ag-Cl were also screened against Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus PTCC 1112) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli PTCC 1330) bacteria. Antityrosinase and hemolytic effects of the selected compounds were also determined.

Abstract
The ongoing SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has caused a high demand for novel innovative antiviral drug candidates. Despite promising results, metal complexes have been relatively unexplored as antiviral agents in general and in particular against SARS-CoV-2. Here we report on silver NHC complexes with chloride or iodide counter ligands that are potent inhibitors of the SARS-CoV-2 papain-like protease (PLpro) but inactive against 3C-like protease (3CLpro) as another SARS-CoV-2 protease. Mechanistic studies on a selected complex confirmed zinc removal from a zinc binding domain of PLpro as relevant factor of their activity. In addition, enzyme kinetic experiments revealed that the complex is an uncompetitive inhibitor and with this rare type of inhibition it offers great pharmacological advantages in terms selectivity. The silver NHC complexes with iodide ligands showed very low or absent host cell toxicity and triggered strong effects on viral replication in cells infected with SARS-CoV-2, making them promising future antiviral drug candidates.

Abstract
Silver-NHC (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene) complexes play a special role in the field of transition-metal complexes due to (1) their prominent biological activity, and (2) their critical role as transfer reagents for the synthesis of metal-NHC complexes by transmetalation. However, the application of silver-NHCs in catalysis is underdeveloped, particularly when compared to their group 11 counterparts, gold-NHCs (Au-NHC) and copper-NHCs (Cu-NHC). In this Special Issue on Featured Reviews in Organometallic Chemistry, we present a comprehensive overview of the application of silver-NHC complexes in the p-activation of alkynes. The functionalization of alkynes is one of the most important processes in chemistry, and it is at the bedrock of organic synthesis. Recent studies show the significant promise of silver-NHC complexes as unique and highly selective catalysts in this class of reactions. The review covers p-activation reactions catalyzed by Ag-NHCs since 2005 (the first example of p-activation in catalysis by Ag-NHCs) through December 2022. The review focuses on the structure of NHC ligands and p-functionalization methods, covering the following broadly defined topics: (1) intramolecular cyclizations; (2) CO2 fixation; and (3) hydrofunctionalization reactions. By discussing the role of Ag-NHC complexes in the p-functionalization of alkynes, the reader is provided with an overview of this important area of research and the role of Ag-NHCs to promote reactions that are beyond other group 11 metal-NHC complexes.

Abstract
An N-heterocyclic carbene ligand precursor bearing a π-extended phenanthridine (3,4-benzoquinoline) unit is presented. The proligand was isolated as the imidazolium salt of chloride (1•HCl), bromide (1•HBr), or hexafluorophosphate (1•HPF6) counterions. These salts can be deprotonated and the carbene installed on silver centres using Ag2O as both a base and a source of metal ion. The resulting Ag(I) complex (1)AgCl can be used in a transmetalation reaction to generate a Pd(II) coordination complex (1)Pd(CH3CN)Cl2. The characterization and photophysical properties of these complexes is presented, along with a demonstration of the utility of (1)Pd(CH3CN)Cl2 in mediating a catalytic C-N cross-coupling reaction for the preparation of the pharmaceutical Piribedil.

Abstract
Starting from 2,4-dichloropyrimidine, 4-(2-dialkylamino)pyrimidinyl functionalized mesitylimidazolium chlorides are accessible in a five-step reaction sequence. Two routes leading to palladium NHC complexes derived from these ligands have been worked out: By transmetalation with the corresponding NHC-AgCl complexes, C,N-coordinated palladium(II) complexes can be obtained. Treatment of palladium dichloride with the imidazolium salts in pyridine and in the presence of K2 CO3 gives cyclometalated and thus C,C-coordinated compounds. The reactivities of all these compounds were investigated in detail as well as their performance in the catalytic Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction. It turned out that the C,C-coordinated derivatives exhibit high catalytic activities in the coupling of arylboronic acids with aryl chlorides, which is consistent with the generally accepted mechanistic ideas on substrate activation.

Abstract
The synthesis and co-ordination chemistry of a new 'bulky yet flexible' N-heterocyclic carbene ("IPaul") is reported. This carbene has spatially-defined steric impact; steric maps show that two quadrants are very bulky while the other two are quite open. The electronic properties of this carbene are very similar to those of other 1,3-diarylimidazol-2-ylidenes. Copper, silver, iridium, and nickel complexes of the new ligand have been prepared. In solution, the ligand adopts two different conformations, while X-ray crystallographic analyses of the transition metal complexes suggest that the syn-conformer is preferred in the solid state due to intermolecular interactions. The copper(i) chloride complex of this new ligand has been shown to be highly-active in the hydrosilylation of carbonyl compounds, when compared to the analogous IPr, IMes, IPr* and IPr*(OMe) complexes.

Abstract
In silver complexes, indirect detection of (109) Ag resonances via (1) H,(109) Ag-HMQC frequently suffers from small or absent JHAg couplings or rapid ligand dissociation. In these cases, it would be favourable to employ H(X)Ag triple resonance spectroscopy that uses the large one-bond JXAg coupling (where the donor atom of the ligand X is the relay nucleus). We have applied an HMQC-based version of the H(C)Ag experiment to a labile silver-NHC complex (NHC=N-heterocyclic carbene) at natural (13) C isotopic abundance and variable temperature. In agreement with simulations, H(C)Ag detection became superior to (1) H,(109) Ag-HMQC detection above -20 °C.

Abstract
Synthesizing stable Au and Ag nanocrystals of narrow size distribution from metal-N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes remains a challenge, particularly in the case of Ag and when NHC ligands with no surfactant-like properties are used. The formation of nanocrystals by one-phase reduction of metal-NHCs (metal = Au, Ag) bearing common NHC ligands, namely 1,3-diethylbenzimidazol-2-ylidene (L(1)), 1,3-bis(mesityl)imidazol-2-ylidene (L(2)), and 1,3-bis(2,6-(i)Pr2C6H3)imidazol-2-ylidene (L(3)), is presented herein. We show that both Au and Ag nanocrystals displaying narrow size distribution can be formed by reduction with amine-boranes. The efficiency of the process and the average size and size distribution of the nanocrystals markedly depend on the nature of the metal and NHC ligand, on the sequence in the reactant addition (i.e., presence or absence of thiol during the reduction step), and on the presence or absence of oxygen. Dodecanethiol was introduced to produce stable nanocrystals associated with narrow size distributions. A specific reaction is observed with Ag-NHCs in the presence of thiols whereas Au-NHCs remain unchanged. Therefore, different organometallic species are involved in the reduction step to produce the seeds. This can be correlated to the lack of effect of NHCs on Ag nanocrystal size. In contrast, alteration of Au nanocrystal average size can be achieved with a NHC ligand of great steric bulk (L(3)). This demonstrates that a well-defined route for a given metal cannot be extended to another metal.

Abstract
Quantification and variation of characteristic properties of different ligand classes is an exciting and rewarding research field. N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) are of special interest since their electron richness and structure provide a unique class of ligands and organocatalysts. Consequently, they have found widespread application as ligands in transition-metal catalysis and organometallic chemistry, and as organocatalysts in their own right. Herein we provide an overview on physicochemical data (electronics, sterics, bond strength) of NHCs that are essential for the design, application, and mechanistic understanding of NHCs in catalysis.
