Abstract
Structural variations in zinc phosphate cluster chemistry have been achieved through a careful selection of phosphate ligand, ancillary ligand, and solvent medium. The use of 4-haloaryl phosphates (X-dippH2) as phosphate source in conjunction with 2-hydroxypyridine (hpy) ancillary ligand in acetonitrile solvent resulted in the isolation of the first examples of octameric zinc phosphates [Zn8(X-dipp)8(hpy)4(CH3CN)2(H2O)2]·4H2O (X = Cl 2, Br 3) and not the expected tetranuclear D4R cubane clusters. Use of 2,3-dihydroxypyridine (dhpy) as ancillary ligand, under otherwise similar reaction conditions with the same set of phosphate ligands and solvent, resulted in isolation of another type of octanuclear zinc phosphate clusters {[(Zn8(X-dipp)4(X-dippH)4(dhpyH)4(dhpyH2)2(H2O)2]·2solvent} (X = Cl, solvent = MeCN 4; Br, solvent = H2O 5), as the only isolated products. X-ray crystal diffraction studies reveal that 2 and 3 are octanuclear clusters that are essentially formed by edge fusion of two D4R zinc phosphates. Although 4 and 5 are also octanuclear clusters, they exhibit a completely different cluster architecture and have been presumably formed by the ability of 2,3-dihydroxypyridine to bridge zinc centers in addition to the X-dipp ligands. Dissolution of both types of octanuclear clusters in DMSO followed by crystallization yields D4R cubanes [Zn(X-dipp)(DMSO)]4 (X = Cl 6, Br 7), in which the ancillary ligands such as hpy, H2O, and CH3CN originally present on the zinc centers of 2-5 have been replaced by DMSO. DFT calculations carried out to understand the preference of Zn8 versus Zn4 clusters in different solvent media reveal that use of CH3CN as solvent favors the formation of fused cubanes of the type 2 and 3, whereas use of DMSO as the solvent medium promotes the formation of D4R structures of the type 6 and 7. The calculations also reveal that the vacant exocluster coordination sites on the zinc centers at the bridgehead positions prefer coordination by water to hpy or CH3CN. Interestingly, the initially inaccessible D4R cubanes [Zn(X-dipp)(hpy)]4·2MeCN (X = Cl 8, Br 9) could be isolated as the sole products from the corresponding DMSO-decorated cubanes 6 and 7 by combining them with hpy in CH3CN.

Abstract
Haloaryl phosphates (X-dippH2, X = Cl, Br, I) react with zinc acetate in the presence of collidine or 2-aminopyridine (2-apy) to yield zinc phosphate clusters [Zn(X-dipp)(collidine)]4 (X = Cl (1), Br (2), I (3)) and [Zn(X-dipp)(2-apy)]4·2MeOH (X = Cl (4), Br (5), I (6)), respectively. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies reveal that collidine and 2-apy capped zinc phosphates 1-6 exist as discrete tetrameric zinc phosphate molecules, exhibiting a cubane-shaped D4R core. In contrast, when the same reaction has been carried out in the presence of 4-cyanopyridine (4-CNpy), polymeric zinc phosphates {[Zn4(X-dipp)4(4-CNpy)2(MeOH)2]·2H2O}n (X = Cl (7), Br (8), I (9)) have been isolated. Compounds 7-9 are square-wave-shaped, one-dimensional polymers composed of fused S4R repeating units. The common structural motif found both in D4R cubanes 1-6 and polymers 7-9 is the S4R building block, which presumably undergoes further fusion because of the coordinative unsaturation at zinc and the simultaneous presence of free P═O. The closed shell cubanes 1-6 are obviously formed by a face-to-face dimerization involving two S4R units in which the two P═O groups are in cis-configuration. On the other hand, the one-dimensional (1-D) square-wave polymers 7-9 are formed from a face-to-face association of S4R building units in which the two P═O groups are in a trans-configuration. In order to stabilize these elusive S4R zinc phosphates, the reaction between Cl-dippH2 and zinc acetate was carried out in the presence of excess imidazole as an ancillary ligand (1:1:4), although only an imidazole decorated cubane cluster [Zn(Cl-dipp)(imz)]4.2MeOH (10) was isolated. The chelating N,N'-donor 1,10-phenanthroline ligand was used to eventually isolate cyclic S4R phosphate [Zn(μ2-Cl-dipp)(1,10-phen)(OH2)]2·MeOH·H2O (11). The change of Zn(2+) source to zinc nitrate and the phosphate source to 2,6-dimethylphenyl phosphate (dmppH2) led to the isolation of another polymeric phosphate [Zn(dmpp)(MeOH)]n (12), with a zigzag backbone, formed through an edge-to-edge to polymerization of S4R building units with P═O groups in trans-configuration. The isolation of four different structural types of zinc phosphates A-D in the present study can be rationalized in terms of fusion of S4R rings in a variety of ways to either produce discrete clusters or 1-D polymers.

Abstract
In this contribution, the latest developments in solid state NMR are presented in the field of organic-inorganic (O/I) materials (or hybrid materials). Such materials involve mineral and organic (including polymeric and biological) components, and can exhibit complex O/I interfaces. Hybrids are currently a major topic of research in nanoscience, and solid state NMR is obviously a pertinent spectroscopic tool of investigation. Its versatility allows the detailed description of the structure and texture of such complex materials. The article is divided in two main parts: in the first one, recent NMR methodological/instrumental developments are presented in connection with hybrid materials. In the second part, an exhaustive overview of the major classes of O/I materials and their NMR characterization is presented.

Abstract
The design and preparation of wound dressings that redress the protease imbalance in chronic wounds is an important goal of wound healing and medical materials science. Chronic wounds contain high levels of tissue and cytokine-destroying proteases including matrix metalloprotease and neutrophil elastase. Thus, the lowering of excessive protease levels in the wound environment by wound dressing sequestration prevents the breakdown of extracellular matrix proteins and growth factors necessary for wound healing. Phosphorylated cotton wound dressings were prepared to target sequestration of proteases from chronic wound exudate through a cationic uptake binding mechanism involving salt bridge formation of the positively charged amino acid side chains of proteases with the phosphate counterions of the wound dressing fiber. Dressings were prepared by applying sodium hexametaphosphate and diammonium phosphate in separate formulations to cotton gauze by pad/dry/cure methods. Phosphorylated cotton dressings were assessed for their ability to lower elastase and collagenase activity. The phosphorylated cotton dressings lowered elastase and collagenase activity 40-80% more effectively than the untreated cotton wound dressings under conditions that mimic chronic wound exudate. Efficacy of the phosphorylated cotton was found to be related to the level of phosphorylation and a lower pH due to protonated phosphate at the surface of the dressing. The capacity of the modified gauze to sequester continued elastase secretions similar to that found in a chronic wound over a 24-h period was retained within a 80% retention of elastase sequestration and was dose-dependent.

Six new zinc phosphates [C18H20N4][Zn4(HPO4)4(H2PO4)2(C18H18N4)3].2H2O (1), [Zn4(HPO4)4(C18H18N4)3].4H2O (2), [Zn3(HPO4)3(H2PO4)(C22H22N8)0.5(C22H24N8)0.5] (3), [Zn2(HPO4)2(C18H16N4)] (4), [Zn(HPO4)(C18H14N2)] (5), and [Zn2(HPO4)2(C12H10N4)] (6) have been synthesized under mild hydrothermal conditions in the presence of 1,4-bis(N-benzimidazolyl)butane (L1), 1,2,4,5-tetrakis(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene (L2), 1,4-bis(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)naphthalene (L3), 9-(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)anthracene (L4), and 1,4-bis(1-imidazolyl)benzene (L5), respectively, and their structures were determined by X-ray crystallography. Compound 1 exhibits a unique inorganic motif of isolated 8-rings interconnected by L1. Compound 2, also formed from L1, contains a previously unobserved chain structure composed of edge-sharing 4-rings and 8-rings. Compound 3, prepared from L2, possesses an unusual one-dimensional framework, which is composed of vertex-sharing 4-rings and triple fused 4-rings. The inorganic portions of 4, 5, and 6 each adopt a layer structure. The sheets in 4 and 5 have a 4.8(2) topology, and in 6, a 6(3) topology is observed. The zinc atoms in compounds 1-6 are all tetrahedrally coordinated by a combination of phosphate groups and organic ligands. Potential relationships between the inorganic motifs reported in the present study are identified. These are indicative of a possible pattern of self-assembly of zinc and phosphorus tetrahedra and indicative of the role of the organic ligands in the formation of hybrid structures.

The syntheses and structures of five new zinc phosphites [Zn(HPO(3))(C(4)H(6)N(2))] (1), [Zn(2)(HPO(3))(2)(C(10)H(10)N(2))(2)](2) (2), [Zn(HPO(3))(C(14)H(14)N(4))(0.5)] (3), [Zn(2)(HPO(3))(2)(C(14)H(14)N(4))].0.4H(2)O (4), and [Zn(2)(HPO(3))(2)(C(14)H(14)N(4))] (5) are reported. In compounds 1-3, the zinc atoms are ligated by 1-methylimidazole, 1-benzylimidazole, and 1,4-bis(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene, respectively, while compounds 4 and 5 are synthesized in the presence of the same bifunctional ligand, 1,3-bis(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene. The inorganic framework of compound 1 is composed of vertex-shared ZnO(3)N and HPO(3) tetrahedra that form 4-rings, which, in turn, are linked to generate a one-dimensional ladder structure. In 2, the inorganic framework is composed of 4-rings and 8-rings to form the well-known 4.8(2) 2D network. This is connected via C-H...pi interactions between 1-benzylimidazole ligand to generate a pseudo-pillared-layer structure. In 3, the inorganic framework again has the 4.8(2) topology pillared by the bis(imidazole) ligand, 1,3-bis(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene. In 4, a new layer pattern is observed. Specifically, three edge-sharing 4-rings form triple-fused 4-rings. These tertiary building units are further connected to form 12-rings. The alternating triple 4-rings and 12-rings form a previously unknown 2D inorganic sheet. The sheets are joined together by the bis(imidazole) ligand, 1,3-bis(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene, to generate a 3D pillared-layer structure. In 4, benzene rings and imidazole rings stack in a zigzag pattern in the interlayer space. A significant role for the triple 4-ring tertiary building unit in the formation of hybrid inorganic/organic metal phosphite structures is proposed for 4 and 5. In 5, the triple 4-rings fuse to give a 1D stair-step structure. Calculations show that the triple 4-ring pattern observed in the linear ladder structure of 1 is more stable than that in the stair step pattern of 5.

Abstract
Four new zinc phosphates [Zn(HPO4)(C6H9N3O2)] (1), [Zn(HPO4)(C4H6N2)].H2O (2), [Zn2(HPO4)2(C14H14N4)].2H2O (3), and [Zn(HPO4)(C14H14N4)] (4) were synthesized in the presence of d-histidine, 1-methylimidazole, 1,4-bis(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene (L1), and 1,2-bis(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene (L2), respectively, and their structures were determined by X-ray crystallography. The inorganic framework of compounds 1, 2, and 3 is composed of vertex-shared ZnO3N and HPO4 tetrahedra that form four rings, which, in turn, are linked to generate a one-dimensional ladder structure. In 1 and 2 the organic groups (monoimidazole ligand) are located at each side of the ladders, while in 3 the bisimidazole ligand, 1,4-bis(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene, links the ladders together to form a novel 2D structure. Compound 1 is the first zinc phosphate framework to be templated by an N-bonded chiral amino acid. In 4 the zero-dimensional four rings are joined together by the linear bridging ligand, 1,2-bis(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene, to generate a one-dimensional framework with a new face-to-face structural motif. The 3D structure of compound 4 is stabilized by hydrogen-bonding, pi-pi interactions, and C-H...pi interactions. The approach of incorporating multifunctional ligands into zinc phosphate frameworks and linking the inorganic zinc phosphates subunits by an organic ligand provides opportunities for the design of new inorganic-organic open frameworks.

Abstract
The synthesis and structure of two yttrium benzene dicarboxylates, 1 is proportional to [[Y2(C12N2H8)2(C8H4O4)3].H2O], I and 3 is proportional to [[Y2(C12N2H8)2(C8H4O4)3]], II with one- and three-dimensional structure has been accomplished employing hydrothermal methods in the presence of 1,10-phenanthroline. While I is formed with phthalic aid (1,2-BDC), II is formed using isophthalic acid (1,3-BDC). Both the structures appear to have comparable building units, an eight-membered ring and a paddle-wheel arrangement, connected through the carboxylic acid. The 1,10-phenanthroline, connected to Y as a secondary ligand, occupies the inter-chain spaces in I, and projects into the channels in II. The channels in II are inter-connected. Photoluminescence studies indicate that both I and II exhibit a bathochromic shift with respect to the acids (1,2-BDC and 1,3-BDC) and a hypsochromic shift with respect to 1,10-phenanthroline. Both the compounds exhibit reasonable pi...pi interactions.
