Abstract
A new noncyclic pentadentate N5-donor Schiff-base ligand, HL2Etpyr (1,1'-(3,6-ditert-butyl-9H-carbazole-1,8-diyl)bis(N-(2-(pyridin-2-yl)ethyl)methanimine)), prepared from 1,8-diformyl-3,6-ditertbutyl-carbazole (HUtBu) and two equivalents of 2-(2-pyridyl)ethylamine, along with four tetrafluoroborate complexes, [MIIL2Etpyr](BF4), where M = Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn, and two [CoIIL2EtPyr]·1/2[CoIIX4] complexes where X = NCS or Cl, isolated as solvates, are reported. All six complexes were structurally characterized, revealing the cations to be isostructural, with M(II) in a trigonal bipyramidal N5-donor environment. Only the Zn(II) complex is fluorescent. Cyclic voltammograms of [MIIL2Etpyr](BF4) in MeCN reveal reversible redox processes at positive potentials: 0.61 (Zn), 0.62 (Cu), 0.57 (Ni), and 0.25 V (Co), and for the cobalt complex a second quasi-reversible process occurs at 0.92 V vs Fc+/Fc. EPR data for the first oxidation product clearly demonstrate that the Zn complex undergoes a ligand centered oxidation, and support this being the case for the Ni and Cu complexes, although this is not definitively shown. After both oxidations the EPR data shows that the Co complex is best described as a low spin Co(III)-ligand radical. In the presence of 80 mM acetic acid, controlled potential electrolysis carried out on [MIIL2Etpyr](BF4) at -1.68 V in MeCN shows some electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance in the order Ni(II) > Cu(II) > Co(II) - but the control, Ni(II) tetrafluoroborate, is more active than all three of the complexes.

Abstract
Previously reported carbazole-bis(tetrazole) (CzTR) ligands (where R = iPr and CH2-2,4,6-C6H2Me3) were used to synthesize air-stable, six-coordinate, octahedral bis-ligand Fe(II) complexes (CzTR)2Fe. The synthesis and characterization of these complexes using 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), X-ray crystallography, Mössbauer spectroscopy, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations are reported. Analysis of the magnetic properties revealed that the isopropyl derivative displays thermally induced spin crossover (SCO) over a temperature range of 150-350 K. This transition appears as an abrupt two-step transition in the solid state but simplifies to a smooth one-step transition in solution. The two-step transition in the solid state has been postulated to be due to lattice and solvation effects. In contrast, the slightly bulkier substituted CH2-2,4,6-C6H2Me3 (CH2Mes) Fe complex displays dramatically different magnetic behavior with no SCO and magnetic data suggesting low-spin Fe(II) with a possible TIP contribution. DFT calculations support the postulate that the change in magnetic behavior is primarily due to the nature of the ligand substituents.

Abstract
Four mononuclear penta coordinated copper(II) chelates, [CuLnBr2] nH2O, containing the tridentate neutral ligands, pyridine-2,6-diimine (Ln), were prepared via the template technique. Analytical and several physicochemical methods have been used to characterize the prepared metal chelates. Square-pyramidal stereochemistry was described to the current copper(II) complexes. DFT technique has been applied to optimize the structure of the running diimines and their corresponding copper-based compounds. Ligand substitution study performed to link the catalytic potency of the candidate oxidase mimics and their lability characters. Spectral investigations reveal that nature of substituents of the chelated ligands effectively tuning the Lewis acidity of copper(II) centers. Biomimetics of redox proteins specifically containing copper were examined towards the aerobic oxidation of polyphenol. Kinetic studies with the stopped-follow technique showed a close association between the Lewis acidity of the copper(II) nuclei of the prepared chelates and their oxidase-like activity. The catalytic activity of the natural enzyme (catechol oxidase from sweet potatoes) measured and compared with that for the present CuII chelates. The thermodynamic parameter drive force (ΔG° or λ) of the performed oxidation processes was determined from the values of redox potential of the chemical species involved in these catalytic reactions. The proposed catalytic reactions pathways have been discussed based on the outcomes of the kinetic investigations.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.

Abstract
The cobalt(II) chloride N,N,N-pincer complexes, [2-{(2,4-(C15H13)2-6-FC6H2)N=CMe}-6-(ArN=CMe)C5H3N]CoCl2 (Ar = 2,6-Me2C6H3) (Co1), 2,6-Et2C6H3 (Co2), 2,6-i-Pr2C6H3 (Co3), 2,4,6-Me3C6H2 (Co4), 2,6-Et2-4-MeC6H2 (Co5), and [2,6-{(2,4-(C15H13)2-6-FC6H2)N=CMe}2C5H3N]CoCl2 (Co6), each containing at least one N-2,4-bis(dibenzosuberyl)-6-fluorophenyl group, were synthesized in good yield from their corresponding unsymmetrical (L1–L5) and symmetrical bis(imino)pyridines (L6). The molecular structures of Co1 and Co2 spotlighted their distorted square pyramidal geometries (τ5 value range: 0.23–0.29) and variations in steric hindrance offered by the dissimilar N-aryl groups. On activation with either MAO or MMAO, Co1–Co6 all displayed high activities for ethylene polymerization, with levels falling in the order: Co1 > Co4 > Co5 > Co2 > Co3 > Co6. Indeed, the least sterically hindered 2,6-dimethyl Co1 in combination with MAO exhibited a very high activity of 1.15 × 107 g PE mol−1 (Co) h−1 at the operating temperature of 70 °C, which dropped by only 15% at 80 °C and 43% at 90 °C. Vinyl-terminated polyethylenes of high linearity and narrow dispersity were generated by all catalysts, with the most sterically hindered, Co3 and Co6, producing the highest molecular weight polymers [Mw range: 30.26–33.90 kg mol−1 (Co3) and 42.90–43.92 kg mol−1 (Co6)]. In comparison with structurally related cobalt catalysts, it was evident that the presence of the N-2,4-bis(dibenzosuberyl)-6-fluorophenyl groups had a limited effect on catalytic activity but a marked effect on thermal stability.

Electronic Tuning of Sterically Encumbered 2-(Arylimino)Pyridine-Nickel Ethylene Polymerization Catalysts by Para-Group Modification. Catalysts 2022. Abstract
A collection of five related 2-(arylimino)pyridines, 2-{(2,6-(CH(C6H4-p-F)2)2-4- RC6H2)N=CMe}C5H4N, each ortho-substituted with 4,4′-difluorobenzhydryl groups but distinct in the electronic properties of the para-R substituent (R = Me L1, Et L2, i-Pr L3, F L4, OCF3 L5), were prepared and combined with (DME)NiBr2 to form their corresponding LNiBr2 complexes, Ni1–Ni5, in high yields. All the complexes were characterized by FT-IR, 19F NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis, while Ni5 was additionally the subject of an X-ray determination, revealing a bromide-bridged dimer. The molecular structure of bis-ligated (L4)2NiBr2 (Ni4’) was also determined, the result of ligand reorganization having occurred during attempted crystallization of Ni4. On activation with either EtAlCl2 or MMAO, Ni1–Ni5 exhibited high catalytic activities (up to 4.28 × 106 g of PE (mol of Ni)−1 h−1 using EtAlCl2) and produced highly branched polyethylene exhibiting low molecular weight (Mw range: 2.50–6.18 kg·mol−1) and narrow dispersity (Mw/Mn range: 2.21–2.90). Notably, it was found that the type of para-R group impacted on catalytic performance with Ni5 > Ni4 > Ni3 > Ni1 > Ni2 for both co-catalysts, underlining the positive influence of electron withdrawing substituents. Analysis of the structural composition of the polyethylene by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy revealed the existence of vinyl-end groups (–CH=CH2) and high levels of internal unsaturation (–CH=CH–) (ratio of vinylene to vinyl, range: 3.1:1–10.3:1) along with various types of branch (Me, Et, Pr, Bu, 1,4-paired Me, 1,6-paired Me and LCBs). Furthermore, reaction temperature was shown to greatly affect the end group type, branching density, molecular weight and in turn the melting points of the resulting polyethylenes.

Abstract
A detailed investigation of the electronic structure of diazinediimine iron complexes and their comparison with the pyridine analogues reveals subtle but important differences, imparted by the supporting heterocycle. In the case of LFe(CO)2 complexes (L = pyrazine- and pyrimidinediimine), the characterization of three available redox states confirmed that whereas the nature of the electron-transfer processes is similar, the differences in π-acidity of the supporting heterocycle significantly affect the redox potentials. The reduction of LFe(CO)2 can yield either a ligand-centered radical (for L = pyrimidine) or a C-C-bonded dimer (for L = pyrazine), supported by a dearomatized core. In the latter case, the C-C bond can be reversibly cleaved oxidatively. Compared to the carbonyl analogues, employing weak-field N2 ligands triggers changes in electronic structure for the neutral and reduced LFe(N2) complexes (L = pyrimidinediimine). En route to the synthesis of the nitrogen complexes, the square-planar LFeCl (L = pyrimidinediimine) was isolated. The monoradical character of the supporting chelate triggers the asymmetric distribution of electron density around the heterocycle.

Abstract
We report on the convenient synthesis of a CNC pincer ligand composed of carbazole and two mesoionic carbenes, as well as the corresponding lithium- and magnesium complexes. Mono-deprotonation affords a rare "naked" amide anion. In contrast to the proligand and its mono-deprotonated form, tri-deprotonated s-block complexes show bright luminescence, and their photophysical properties were therefore investigated by absorption- and luminescence spectroscopy. They reveal a quantum yield of 16% in solution at ambient temperature. Detailed quantum-chemical calculations assist in rationalizing the emissive properties based on an Intra-Ligand-Charge-Transfer (ILCT) between the carbazolido- and mesoionic carbene ligands. (Earth-)alkali metals prevent the distortion of the ligand following excitation and, thus, by avoiding non-radiative deactivation support bright luminescence.

Abstract
By dealing CrCl3∙3THF with the corresponding ligands (L1-L5), an array of fluoro-substituted chromium (III) chlorides (Cr1-Cr5) bearing 2-[1-(2,4-dibenzhydryl-6-fluoro- phenylimino)ethyl]-6-[1-(arylimino)ethyl]pyridine (aryl = 2,6-Me2Ph Cr1, 2,6-Et2Ph Cr2, 2,6-iPr2Ph Cr3, 2,4,6-Me3Ph Cr4, 2,6-Et2-4-MePh Cr5) was synthesized in good yield and validated via Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and elemental analysis. Besides the routine characterizations, the single-crystal X-ray diffraction study revealed the solid-state structures of complexes Cr2 and Cr4 as the distorted-octahedral geometry around the chromium center. Activated by either methylaluminoxane (MAO) or modified methylaluminoxane (MMAO), all the chromium catalysts exhibited high activities toward ethylene polymerization with the MMAO-promoted polymerizations far more productive than with MAO (20.14 × 106 g (PE) mol-1 (Cr) h-1 vs. 10.03 × 106 g (PE) mol-1 (Cr) h-1). In both cases, the resultant polyethylenes were found as highly linear polyethylene waxes with low molecular weights around 1-2 kg mol-1 and narrow molecular weight distribution (MWD range: 1.68-2.25). In general, both the catalytic performance of the ortho-fluorinated chromium complexes and polymer properties have been the subject of a detailed investigation and proved to be highly dependent on the polymerization reaction parameters (including cocatalyst type and amount, reaction temperature, ethylene pressure and run time).

Abstract
A variety of carbazolyl-appended Schiff bases were readily synthesized from 1-formylcarbazoles and aniline derivatives. Boron complexation of the resulting ligands allowed for facile preparation of new carbazole-based BODIPY analogues showing solid-state fluorescence. Furthermore, some dyes were converted into chiral compounds through the Et2 AlCl-mediated incorporation of a binaphthyl unit. The chiral dyes showed aggregation-induced fluorescence and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) with the ΦF and glum of up to 0.22 and -3.5×10-3 , respectively, in the solid state. The solid-state fluorescence and CPL were well characterized by the crystal packing analyses and DFT calculations.

Abstract
Five examples of bis(arylimino)tetrahydrocyclohepta[b]pyridine dichloroiron(II) complex, [2-{(Ar)N=CMe}-9-{N(Ar)}C10H10N]FeCl2 (Ar = 2-(C5H9)-4,6-(CHPh2)2C6H2Fe1, 2-(C6H11)-4,6-(CHPh2)2C6H2Fe2, 2-(C8H15)-4,6-(CHPh2)2C6H2Fe3, 2-(C12H23)-4,6-(CHPh2)2C6H2Fe4, and 2,6-(C5H9)2-4-(CHPh2)C6H2Fe5), incorporating ortho-pairings based on either benzhydryl/cycloalkyl (ring sizes ranging from 5 to 12) or cyclopentyl/cyclopentyl groups, have been prepared in reasonable yield by employing a simple one-pot template strategy. Each complex was characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and for Fe3 and Fe5 by single crystal X-ray diffraction; pseudo-square pyramidal geometries are a feature of their coordination spheres. On treatment of Fe1–Fe5 with modified methylaluminoxane (MMAO) or methylaluminoxane (MAO), a range in catalytic activities for ethylene polymerization were observed with benzhydryl/cyclopentyl-containing Fe1/MMAO achieving the maximum level of 15.3 × 106 g PE mol−1 (Fe) h−1 at an operating temperature of 70 °C. As a key trend, the activity was found to drop as the ortho-cycloalkyl ring size increased: Fe1C5H9/CHPh2~Fe5C5H9/C5H9 > Fe2C6H11/CHPh2 > Fe3C8H15/CHPh2 > Fe4C12H23/CHPh2. Furthermore, strictly linear polyethylenes (Tm > 126 °C) were formed with molecular weights again dependent on the ortho-cycloalkyl ring size (up to 55.6 kg mol−1 for Fe1/MAO); narrow dispersities were a characteristic of all the polymers (Mw/Mn range: 2.3–4.7), highlighting the well-controlled nature of these polymerizations.

Abstract
The α,α'-bis(imino)-2,3:5,6-bis(pentamethylene)pyridyl-cobalt(ii) chlorides, [2,3:5,6-{C4H8C(N(2-R1-4-R3-6-R2C6H2))}2C5HN] CoCl2 (R1 = Me, R2 = R3 = CH(p-FPh)2Co1; R1 = Et, R2 = R3 = CH(p-FPh)2Co2; R1 = i-Pr, R2 = R3 = CH(p-FPh)2Co3; R1 = Cl, R2 = R3 = CH(p-FPh)2Co4; R1 = F, R2 = R3 = CH(p-FPh)2Co5; R1 = F, R2 = R3 = CHPh2Co5'', R1 = R2 = Me, R3 = CH(p-FPh)2Co6; R1 = R3 = Me, R2 = CH(p-FPh)2Co7), have been synthesized by a one-pot template reaction of α,α'-dioxo-2,3:5,6-bis(pentamethylene)pyridine, cobalt(ii) chloride and the respective aniline in n-butanol. By contrast, the mixed cobalt(ii) chloride/acetate complex, [2,3:5,6-{C4H8C(N(2-F-4,6-(CH(p-FPh)2)2C6H2))}2C5HN]CoCl(OAc) (Co5'), was isolated when the corresponding template reaction was carried out in acetic acid. Structural characterization of Co4, Co5 and Co5'' revealed distorted square pyramidal geometries while six-coordinate Co5', incorporating a chelating acetate ligand, exhibited a distorted octahedral geometry. On activation with either MAO or MMAO, 2-fluoride-4,6-bis{di(p-fluorophenyl)methyl}-substituted Co5 showed maximum catalytic activity for ethylene polymerization at a high operating temperature of 60 °C (up to 2.1 × 107 g (PE) mol-1 (Co) h-1), producing highly linear (Tms > 121 °C), low molecular weight polyethylene waxes (Mw range: 1.5-5.0 kg mol-1) with narrow dispersity (Mw/Mn range: 1.7-2.9). End-group analysis of the waxes reveals β-H elimination as the dominant chain transfer process.

Abstract
A one-pot template strategy has been utilized to synthesize sterically enhanced bis(imino)cyclohepta[b]pyridine-cobalt(ii) chlorides, [2-{(Ar)N[double bond, length as m-dash]CMe}-9-{N(Ar)}C10H10N]CoCl2 (Ar = 2-(C5H9)-4,6-(CHPh2)2C6H2Co1, 2-(C6H11)-4,6-(CHPh2)2C6H2Co2, 2-(C8H15)-4,6-(CHPh2)2C6H2Co3, 2-(C12H23)-4,6-(CHPh2)2C6H2Co4, 2,6-(C5H9)2-4-(CHPh2)C6H2Co5). All five complexes have been characterized by a combination of FT-IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The molecular structures of Co1, Co3 and Co5 highlight the substantial steric hindrance imparted by the 2-cycloalkyl-6-benzhydryl or 2,6-dicyclopentyl ortho-substitution pattern; distorted square pyramidal geometries are exhibited in each case. On activation with methylaluminoxane (MAO) or modified methylaluminoxane (MMAO), all the complexes (apart from Co4/MAO) were active ethylene polymerization catalysts (up to 3.70 × 106 g PE per mol (Co) per h for Co5/MMAO), operating effectively at temperatures between 50 °C and 60 °C, producing polyethylenes with high molecular weights (up to 589.5 kg mol-1 for Co3/MAO). Furthermore, all polymers were highly linear (Tm > 130 °C) with narrow dispersities (Mw/Mn range: 2.0-3.0). The coexistence of two chain termination pathways, β-H elimination and transfer to aluminum, has been demonstrated using 13C/1H NMR spectroscopy.

Abstract
The 4,4'-difluorobenzhydryl-modified bis(imino)pyridylferrous chlorides, [2-{CMeN(2,6-(4-FC6H4)2CH2-4-t-BuC6H2)}-6-(CMeNAr)C5H3N] FeCl2 (Ar = 2,6-Me2C6H3Fe1, 2,6-Et2C6H3Fe2, 2,6-i-Pr2C6H3Fe3, 2,4,6-Me3C6H2Fe4, 2,6-Et-4-MeC6H2Fe5 and 2,6-(4-FC6H4)2CH2-4-t-BuC6H2Fe6), were synthesized in good yields. All iron complexes were characterized by 1H/19F NMR and elemental analysis, and the molecular structures of representative complexes Fe1 and Fe6 were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction, which revealed a slightly distorted square pyramid around the iron center. Activated with either MAO or MMAO, Fe1-Fe5 exhibited very high activities (up to 17.2 × 106 g (PE) mol-1 (Fe) h-1 for Fe1/MMAO) toward ethylene polymerization, producing highly linear polyethylenes with narrow dispersities as required by industry and value added PEs. Importantly, the Fe1/MAO maintained an activity of 9.5 × 106 g (PE) mol-1 (Fe) h-1 at 100 °C of operating temperature, making the catalytic system suitable for practical application. Simulation quantitatively revealed the mechanism of the enhanced catalytic performance from the electronic and steric point of view.

Abstract
A novel carbazole-containing porphyrinoid 4H and its oligomers 6H and 7H were synthesized for the first time via the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction. The structures of 4H, 4Pd, 6H, and 6Zn were finally confirmed by X-ray analysis. The exciton coupling strength (628 cm-1) in 4Zn, 6Zn, and 7Zn was found to be larger than that of the directly-linked porphyrin arrays (570 cm-1), extending their absorption spectra to the NIR region as well as enhancing the extinction coefficients.

Activity and Thermal Stability of Cobalt(II)-Based Olefin Polymerization Catalysts Adorned with Sterically Hindered Dibenzocycloheptyl Groups. Molecules 2019; 24:molecules24102007. Abstract
Five examples of unsymmetrical 2-(2,4-bis(dibenzocycloheptyl)-6-methylphenyl- imino)ethyl)-6-(1-(arylyimino)ethyl)pyridine derivatives (aryl = 2,6-Me2C6H3 in L1; 2,6-Et2C6H3 in L2; 2,6-i-Pr2C6H3 in L3; 2,4,6-Me3C6H2 in L4 and 2,6-Et2-4-MeC6H2 in L5) were prepared and characterized. Treatment with CoCl2 offered the corresponding cobalt precatalysts Co1–Co5, which were characterized by FT-IR and NMR spectroscopy as well as elemental analysis. The molecular structures of Co3 and Co4 determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction revealed distorted square pyramidal geometries with τ5 values of 0.052–0.215. Activated with either MAO or MMAO, the precatalysts displayed high activities in ethylene polymerization, where Co1 with the least bulky substituents exhibited a peak activity of 1.00 × 107 g PE mol−1 (Co) h−1 at 60 °C. With MAO as a cocatalyst, the activity was reduced only by one order of magnitude at 90 °C, which implies thermally stable active sites. The polymerization product was highly linear polyethylene with vinyl end groups. Co3 with the most sterically hindered active sites was capable of generating polyethylene of high molecular weight, reaching 6.46 × 105 g mol−1. Furthermore, high melting point and unimodal molecular weight distribution were observed in the resulting polyethylene. It must be stressed that the thermal stability of the catalyst and the molecular weight of the obtained polyethylene attain the highest values reported for the unsymmetrical 2,6-bis(imino)pyridylcobalt (II) chloride precatalysts.

Improved Access to 1,8-Diformyl-carbazoles Leads to Metal-Free Carbazole-Based [2 + 2] Schiff Base Macrocycles with Strong Turn-On Fluorescence Sensing of Zinc(II) Ions. Abstract
Development of a new and high yielding synthetic route to 1,8-diformyl-carbazoles 3 (3a 3,6-di- tert-butyl substituted; 3b 3,6-unsubstituted) is reported. Use of a Heck coupling reaction, followed by ozonolysis, has greatly facilitated the preparation of these interesting head units in useful quantities. An initial foray into the new generations of Schiff base macrocycles that ready access to these head units (3) opens up, has led to the direct (i.e., metal-free) synthesis of two [2 + 2] macrocycles from 3a or 3b with 1,2-diaminoethane, H2LtBu (4a) and H2LH (4b), respectively, obtained as yellow powders in high yields (87-88%). The dizinc complex [Zn2LH(OAc)2] (5b) was isolated as a bright yellow solid in 83% yield, by 1:2:2 reaction of H2LH with zinc(II) acetate and triethylamine. Aldehydes 3a and 3b, macrocycle H2LH, and complex [Zn2LH(OAc)2] (5b) have been structurally characterized. The carbazole NH makes bifurcated hydrogen bonds with the pair of flanking 1,8-diformyl-moieties in 3, or 1,8-diimine-moieties in H2LH, leading to a flat, all- cis conformation. The stepped conformation of the metal-free macrocycle H2LH is retained in [Zn2LH(OAc)2], despite deprotonation and binding of two zinc(II) centers within the two tridentate pockets. The N3O2 coordination of the zinc ions is completed by one μ1,1- and one μ1,3- bridging acetate anion. Excitation of nanomolar [Zn2LH(OAc)2] in DMF at 335 nm results in clearly visible blue fluorescence (λmax = 460 nm). Further studies on the H2LH macrocycle revealed turn-on fluorescence, with selectivity (over Ca2+, Mg2+ and a range of 3d dications) and nanomolar sensitivity for zinc(II) ions, highlighting one of the many potential applications for these new carbazole-based Schiff base macrocycles.

Abstract
Four tridentate carbazole-based ligands, HLtBu/H {3,6-di(tert-butyl)-1,8-bis[5-(3-benzyl-1,2,3-triazole)]-9H-carbazole}, HLtBu/tBu {3,6-di(tert-butyl)-1,8-bis[5-(3-(4-tert-butyl)benzyl-1,2,3-triazole)]-9H-carbazole}, HLH/H {1,8-bis[5-(3-benzyl-1,2,3-triazole)]-9H-carbazole} and HLH/tBu {1,8-bis[5-(3-(4-tert-butyl)benzyl-1,2,3-triazole)]-9H-carbazole}, were prepared and complexed with cobalt(ii) tetrafluoroborate. In situ air oxidation resulted in cobalt(iii) complexes 1-4 with the general formula [CoIII(L)2]BF4·xH2O (1: L = LtBu/H, x = 2; 2: L = LtBu/tBu, x = 1; 3: L = LH/H, x = 0.5; 4: L = LH/tBu, x = 2). X-ray structural characterisation confirmed that the four complexes are isostructural, with two orthogonally coordinated deprotonated tridentate ligands providing an octahedral N6-donor set to the cobalt(iii) ion. 1H NMR studies show that this structure is maintained in CDCl3 and DMSO-d6 solution. Cyclic voltammetry on 1-4 in MeCN showed that all of the complexes exhibit two reversible, one-electron oxidation processes (probably due to ligand oxidations), and an irreversible or quasi-reversible reduction process (probably due to reduction of Co(iii) to Co(ii)). As expected, the oxidations move 120-140 mV to lower potentials on adding tert-butyl substituents to the 3 and 6 positions of the carbazole rings, and unsurprisingly the potentials are far less sensitive to the nature of the benzyl ring substituents.
