Complex-Forming Properties of Ceftazidime with Fe(III) Ions in an Aqueous Solution

In the present study, the complexing properties of ceftazidime with Fe(III) ions in aqueous solutions were characterized by UV-vis spectrophotometric and potentiometric methods. Using the UV-vis spectrophotometric method, the absorbance values for Fe(III) ions, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic (ceftazidime), and the Fe(III)-ceftazidime system were determined. Based on pH-metric studies, the value of the stability constant for the Fe(III)-ceftazidime complex was calculated.

Metal Coordination Properties of a Chromophoric Desferrioxamine (DFO) Derivative: Insight on the Coordination Stoichiometry and Thermodynamic Stability of Zr4+ Complexes

Desferrioxamine (DFO) is the current "gold standard" chelator for ⁸⁹Zr⁴⁺, which is used to label monoclonal antibodies for applications in immunopositron emission tomography. Recently, controversial data have been reported regarding the speciation and the stability of the complexes formed by DFO with Zr⁴⁺ in solution. To shed some light on this point, we studied the coordination properties in solution ofa chromophoric DFO derivative bearing a substituted pyrimidine residue (DFO-Pm) toward several metal ions (Zr⁴⁺, Cu²⁺, Zn²⁺, Mg²⁺, Ca²⁺, Na⁺, K⁺). Potentiometric titrations showed that DFO-Pm and pristine DFO form complexes with very similar stoichiometry and stability. DFO-Pm, which can consequently be taken as a model system for DFO, provides a photochemical response to metal coordination that can be used to further define the complexes formed. In the critical case of Zr⁴⁺, spectrophotometric measurements allowed the verification of the formation of 1:1 and 2:3 complexes that, together with 2:2 complexes form the coordination model that was obtained through the use of our potentiometric measurements. Additionally, mass spectrometry measurements verified the formation of 1:1 and 2:3 complexes and showed that 1:2 species can be easily generated through the fragmentation of the 2:3 species. In conclusion, the results obtained with DFO-Pm validate the complexation model of Zr⁴⁺/DFO composed of 1:1, 2:2, and 2:3 metal-to-ligand complexes. Convergences and conflicts with other works are addressed.

Gelatin-Derived 1D Carbon Nanofiber Architecture with Simultaneous Decoration of Single Fe-Nx Sites and Fe/Fe3 C Nanoparticles for Efficient Oxygen Reduction

Exploring high-performance non-precious-metal electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is critical. Herein, a scalable and cost-effective strategy is reported for the construction of one-dimensional carbon nanofiber architectures with simultaneous decoration of single Fe-N_x sites and highly dispersed Fe/Fe₃ C nanoparticles for efficient ORR, through the Fe^III -complex-assisted electrospinning of gelatin nanofibers with subsequent pre-oxidation and carbonization. Results show that the presence of a Fe^III complex enables the 1D gelatin nanofibers to be well retained during the pre-oxidation process. Owing to the distinct 1D nanofiber structure and the synergistic effect of Fe/Fe₃ C and Fe-N_x sites, the resulting electrocatalyst is highly active for ORR with a half-wave potential of 0.885 V (outperforming commercial Pt/C) and a superior electrochemical stability in alkaline electrolytes. Similarly, it also shows a high power density (144.7 mW cm^-2 ) and a superior stability in Zn-air batteries. This work opens a path for the design and synthesis of 1D carbon electrocatalyst for efficient ORR catalysis.

Profiling the oxidative activation of DMSO-F6 by pulse radiolysis and translational potential for radical C-H trifluoromethylation

The oxidative activation of the perfluorinated analogue of dimethyl sulfoxide, DMSO-F₆, by hydroxyl radicals efficiently produces trifluoromethyl radicals based on pulse radiolysis, laboratory scale experiments, and comparison of rates of reaction for analogous radical systems. In comparison to commercially available precursors, DMSO-F₆ proved to be more stable, easier to handle and overall more convenient than leading F₃C-reagents and may therefore be an ideal surrogate to study F₃C radicals for time-resolved kinetics studies. In addition, we present an improved protocol for the preparation of this largely unexplored reagent.

The solution thermodynamic stability of desferrioxamine B (DFO) with Zr(IV)

Desferrioxamine B (DFO, [H₄L]⁺, ligand) is currently the preferred chelator for ⁸⁹Zr(IV), however the biological studies suggest that it releases the metal ion in vivo. Herein, we present the solution thermodynamics of complexes formed between Zr(IV) and this hexadentate chelating agent, the data surprisingly not yet available in the literature. Several techniques including electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), potentiometry, UV-Vis spectroscopy and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) were used to determine the stoichiometry and thermodynamic stability of complexes formed in solution over pH range 1-11, overcoming all the difficulties with the characterisation of the aqueous solution chemistry of Zr(IV) complexes, like strong hydrolysis and lack of spectral information. A model containing only mononuclear complexes, i.e. [ZrHL]²⁺ [ZrL]⁺, [ZrLH_-1] throughout the entire measured pH range is proposed. The stability constants and pM (Zr(IV)) value determined for Zr(IV)-DFO system, place DFO among good Zr(IV) chelators, however the formation of 6-coordinate unsaturated complexes (i.e. with coordination sphere of 8-coordinate Zr(IV) completed by water molecules), together with the susceptibility of coordinated water molecule to deprotonation, are suggested to be the reason of in vivo instability of ⁸⁹Zr(IV)-DFO complexes.

Resolving early stages of homogeneous iron(III) oxyhydroxide formation from iron(III) nitrate solutions at pH 3 using time-resolved SAXS

Small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) measurements coupled to a stopped-flow device has permitted the observation of the kinetics of Fe(III) oxyhydroxide (FeOx) formation and transformation from around 1 s to 30 min after initiation under environmentally relevant conditions at pH 3. The Unified Model approach was used to determine the evolution of multiple key parameters (particle scattering mass, mean particle volume, particle concentration, particle dimensionality, and particle size) for two separate structural levels as a function of time, with the results obtained enabling clarification of the mechanisms underlying FeOx formation and transformation under these conditions. Colloidal primary particles (radius of gyration 2-10 nm) that were observable by SAXS formed within 1 s of stopping the flow and subsequently grew over several minutes, first by cluster-cluster addition and then by a monomer-addition mechanism. Aggregation of these primary particles via a secondary cluster-cluster addition mechanism simultaneously resulted in a distinct population of larger (25-40 nm radius of gyration) secondary particles. The primary particles evolved into compact spheroidal forms with fractally rough surfaces, while the secondary particles were relatively open mass fractal structures. Comparison of the observed rates of these processes with those predicted for Fe polymerization indicates that kinetics of primary particle formation were likely controlled initially by rates of exchange between water molecules coordinated with Fe and those in the bulk solution. These findings provide new insights into the mechanisms underlying FeOx formation and transformation, and the kinetics of these mechanisms, at pH 3.

Bioinspired gradient materials via blending of polymer electrolytes and applying electric forces

Free-standing and supported films with a lateral gradient in composition were prepared using blends of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA)/sodium salt and its copolymers with acrylamide (AAm) in an applied electric field. The gradients were stabilized by complexation of carboxylate groups with metal species. To find the favorable conditions and components for successful blending and interaction with Fe and Ce species, we studied blending of the two PAA samples with molecular weights of 2000 and 15 000 Da with two copolymers of AA and AAm (with 10 and 70 wt % of AA units) and interaction of these blends with Fe(III) and Ce(IV) ions. The structure of the hybrid (blend) films was studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV-vis spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and optical microscopy. To ensure blend miscibility and efficient interaction with metal ions, the copolymer containing 70 wt % AA units has been used. The surface enrichment with metal species was observed at all experimental conditions studied in this work. For lateral gradient film formation, 15 000 Da PAA has been used to avoid uneven distribution of the homopolymer in the film, observed for 2000 Da PAA. The gradient films were characterized by XPS. The lateral gradient of functionality such as COONa group or Fe content has been obtained at different strengths of electric field applied during film formation. The use of lower voltage allows one to prevent NaOH formation and creates more favorable conditions for development of a gradient polymer film. The Ce content gradient was not observed due to formation of large Ce oxide particles (> or = 750 nm), masking the gradient of functionality. For the first time, free-standing films with a lateral gradient in composition were prepared using an applied electric field.

Iron (III) hydrolysis and solubility at 25 degrees C

UV-vis spectrophotometric measurements, potentiometric titrations, and solubility measurements were performed to evaluate the hydrolysis constants for aqueous Fe(III) and the solubility of 2-line ferrihydrite over a wide concentration range (0-3 M NaClO4 and p[H+] 1.54-11.23). From these measurements, Fe3+ was found to hydrolyze to form FeOH2+, Fe2(OH)24+, Fe(OH)2+, Fe(OH)3(0), and Fe(OH)4-. The hydrolysis and solubility constants of these species were determined together with their dependence on ionic strength. The iron (III) hydrolysis constants at infinity dilution were (logbeta(1,1) to logbeta(1,4) and logbeta(2,2))-2.19 +/- 0.02, -5.76 +/- 0.06, -14.30 +/- 0.32, -21.71 +/- 0.24, and -2.92 +/- 0.02, respectively. The solubility product for 2-line ferrihydrite was (logK(s,0)) +3.50 +/- 0.20. The results have been compared with literature values.

Electrocatalysis of Peroxide Reduction by Au-Stabilized, Fe-Containing Poly(vinylpyridine) Films

We show that poly(vinylpyridine) (PVP) coated glassy carbon surfaces containing Fe(CN)6(3-) exhibit catalytic activity toward electroreduction of H2O2. While Fe(CN)6(3-) is catalytically inactive in solution phase, it exhibits catalytic activity upon incorporation into the PVP film, because film incorporation leads to an open coordination site in the otherwise inert Fe(CN)6(3-) molecule. However, this catalytic activity is quickly lost during H2O2 electroreduction due to leaching of the Fe species from the PVP film. The Fe catalyst in the PVP film could be stabilized by 1 order of magnitude in time by electrodeposition of small Au particles. Characterization of the film using scanning electron microscopy, secondary ion mass spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy shows that covalent attachment between the Au particle and the Fe-based catalyst is a likely mechanism for catalyst stabilization.
