Abstract
Compared to 3D perovskites, 2D perovskites exhibit excellent stability, structural diversity, and tunable bandgaps, making them highly promising for applications in solar cells, light-emitting diodes, and photodetectors. However, the trade-off for worse charge transport is a critical issue that needs to be addressed. This comprehensive review first discusses the structure of 3D and 2D metal halide perovskites, then summarizes the significant factors influencing charge transport in detail and provides a brief overview of the testing methods. Subsequently, various strategies to improve the charge transport are presented, including tuning A'-site organic spacer cations, A-site cations, B-site metal cations, and X-site halide ions. Finally, an outlook on the future development of improving the 2D perovskites' charge transport is discussed.

Abstract
Two-dimensional organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites (2D HOIPs) have been widely used for various optoelectronics applications owing to their excellent photoelectric properties. However, the selection of organic spacer cations is mostly qualitative without quantitative guidance. Meanwhile, the fundamental mechanism of the carrier transport across the organic spacer layer is still unclear. Here, by using the first-principles nonadiabatic molecular dynamics (NAMD) method, we have studied the transport process of excited carriers between 2D HOIPs separated by a spacer cation layer in real time at atomic levels. We find that the excited electrons and holes can transfer from single-inorganic-layer 2D HOIP to bi-inorganic-layer 2D HOIP on a subpicosecond to picosecond scale. Moreover, we have developed a new method to capture the electron-hole interaction in the frame of NAMD. This work provides a promising direction to design new materials toward high-performance optoelectronics.

Abstract
Movement of energy within light-harvesting assemblies is typically carried out with separately synthesized donor and acceptor species, which are then brought together to induce an interaction. Recently, two-dimensional (2D) lead halide perovskites have gained interest for their ability to accommodate and assemble chromophoric molecules within their lattice, creating hybrid organic-inorganic compositions. Using a combination of steady-state and time-resolved absorption and emission spectroscopy, we have now succeeded in establishing the competition between energy transfer and charge trapping in 2D halide perovskite colloids containing naphthalene-derived cations (i.e., NEA2PbX4, where NEA = naphthylethylamine). The presence of room-temperature triplet emission from the naphthalene moiety depends on the ratio of bromide to iodide in the lead halide sublattice (i.e., x in NEA2Pb(Br1-xIx)4), with only bromide-rich compositions showing sensitized emission. Photoluminescence lifetime measurements of the sensitized naphthalene reveal the formation of the naphthalene triplet excimer at room temperature. From transient absorption measurements, we find the rate constant of triplet energy transfer (kEnT) to be on the order of ∼109 s-1. At low temperatures (77 K) a new broad emission feature arising from trap states is observed in all samples ranging from pure bromide to pure iodide composition. These results reveal the interplay between sensitized triplet energy transfer and charge trapping in 2D lead halide perovskites, highlighting the need to carefully parse contributions from competing de-excitation pathways for optoelectronic applications.

Abstract
Halide perovskites have attracted a great amount of attention owing to their unique materials chemistry, excellent electronic properties, and low-cost manufacturing. Two-dimensional (2D) halide perovskites, originating from three-dimensional (3D) perovskite structures, are structurally more diverse and therefore create functional possibilities beyond 3D perovskites. The much less restrictive size constraints on the organic component of these hybrid materials particularly provide an exciting platform for designing unprecedented materials and functionalities at the molecular level. In this Perspective, we discuss the concept and recent development of a sub-class of 2D perovskites, namely, organic semiconductor-incorporated perovskites (OSiPs). OSiPs combine the electronic functionality of organic semiconductors with the soft and dynamic halide perovskite lattice, offering opportunities for tailoring the energy landscape, lattice and carrier dynamics, and electron/ion transport properties for various fundamental studies, as well as device applications. Specifically, we summarize recent advances in the design, synthesis, and structural analysis of OSiPs with various organic conjugated moieties as well as the application of OSiPs in photovoltaics, light-emitting devices, and transistors. Lastly, challenges and further opportunities for OSiPs in molecular design, integration of novel functionality, film quality, and stability issues are addressed.

Abstract
In this work, a structural and electronic properties of a novel organic arsenate template by 4-aminopyridine, with the general formula (C5H7N2)(C5H8N2)[AsO4]·H2O ((4-APH)(4-APH2)[AsO4]·H2O) have been presented. The density functional theory (DFT) along with B3LYP hybrid functional is employed. The optimized structure was found to be in well consistent with the X-ray diffraction geometry. The examination of the vibrational spectrum was correlated by DFT calculation using the unit cell parameters obtained from the experiment data. Besides, the thermodynamic functions (heat capacity, entropy, enthalpy) from spectroscopic data by statistical methods were obtained for the range of temperature 100–1000 K. In addition, the molecular orbital calculations such as Natural Bond Orbitals (NBOs), AIM approach, HOMO–LUMO energy gap, NLO characteristic and Hirshfeld surface analysis were also performed with the same level of DFT. Electronic stability of the compound arising from hyper conjugative interactions and charge delocalization were also investigated based on the natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis. Molecular docking studies were also conducted as part of this study. The theoretical results showed an excellent agreement with the experimental values.

Abstract
1,3,5-Trimethyltriazacyclohexane, Me3tach, readily adds to bismuth triiodide to form a variety of new coordination compounds depending on the stoichiometry, solvent, and crystallization conditions. X-ray crystallographic evidence has been obtained for both 2:1 and 1:1 Me3tach:Bi complexes with formulas of [(Me3tach)2BiI2][(Me3tach)BiI4], [(Me3tach)2BiI2]3[Bi2I9][I][HMe3tach]·THF, and (Me3tach)BiI3(py)2. The related chloride structure (Me3tach)BiCl3(py)2 forms from BiCl3. The structure of (Me3tacn)BiI3 with the larger chelate, 1,4,7-trimethyltriazacyclononane, Me3tacn, was obtained for comparison, and the polymeric structure of BiI3 in THF was defined as [BiI(THF)(μ-I)2]n.

Abstract
A selenophene-containing conjugated organic ligand, 2-(4'-methyl-5'-(5-(3-methylthiophen-2-yl)selenophen-2-yl)-[2,2'-bithiophen]-5-yl)ethan-1-aminium (STm), was synthesized and incorporated into a Sn(II)-based two-dimensional perovskite, (STm)2SnI4. The band offset between the perovskite and ligand can be fine-tuned by introducing the STm ligand. Both field-effect transistor and light-emitting diode devices based on (STm)2SnI4 films exhibit high performance and enhanced operational stability.

Abstract
Low-dimensional organic-inorganic halide perovskites have attracted interest for their properties in exciton dynamics, broad-band emission, magnetic spin selectivity. However, there is no quantitative model for predicting the structure-directing effect of organic cations on the dimensionality of these low-dimensional perovskites. Here, we report a machine learning (ML)-assisted approach to predict the dimensionality of lead iodide-based perovskites. A literature review reveals 86 reported amines that are classified into "2D"-forming and "non-2D"-forming based on the dimensionality of their perovskites. Machining learning models were trained and tested based on the classification and descriptor features of these ammonium cations. Four structural features, including steric effect index, eccentricity, largest ring size, and hydrogen-bond donor, have been identified as the key controlling factors. On the basis of these features, a quantified equation is created to calculate the probability of forming 2D perovskite for a selected amine. To further illustrate its predicting capability, the built model is applied to several untested amines, and the predicted dimensionality is verified by growing single crystals of perovskites from these amines. This work represents a step toward predicting the crystal structures of low dimensional hybrid halide perovskites using ML as a tool.

Abstract
We present a comprehensive review of the structural chemistry of hybrid lead halides of stoichiometry APbX 4, A 2PbX4 or A A'PbX 4, where A and A' are organic ammonium cations and X = Cl, Br or I. These compounds may be considered as layered perovskites, containing isolated, infinite layers of corner-sharing PbX 4 octahedra separated by the organic species. First, over 250 crystal structures were extracted from the CCDC and classified in terms of unit-cell metrics and crystal symmetry. Symmetry mode analysis was then used to identify the nature of key structural distortions of the [PbX 4]∞ layers. Two generic types of distortion are prevalent in this family: tilting of the octahedral units and shifts of the inorganic layers relative to each other. Although the octahedral tilting modes are well known in the crystallography of purely inorganic perovskites, the additional layer-shift modes are shown to enormously enrich the structural options available in layered hybrid perovskites. Some examples and trends are discussed in more detail in order to show how the nature of the interlayer organic species can influence the overall structural architecture; although the main aim of the paper is to encourage workers in the field to make use of the systematic crystallographic methods used here to further understand and rationalize their own compounds, and perhaps to be able to design-in particular structural features in future work.

Abstract
This contribution is focused on bismuth species in the coordination sphere of transition metals. In molecular transition metal complexes, three types of Bi-M bonding are considered, namely dative Bi→M interactions (with Bi acting as a donor), dative Bi←M interactions (with Bi acting as an acceptor) and covalent Bi-M interactions (M = transition metal). Synthetic routes to all three classes of compounds are outlined, the Bi-M bonding situation is discussed, trends in the geometric parameters and in the coordination chemistry of the compounds are addressed, and common spectroscopic properties are summarized. As an important part of this contribution, the reactivity of bismuth species in the coordination sphere of transition metal complexes in stoichiometric and catalytic reactions is highlighted.

Abstract
Here we provide a comprehensive review of a newly developed lighting technology based on metal halide perovskites (i.e. perovskite light-emitting diodes) encompassing the research endeavours into materials, photophysics and device engineering. At the outset we survey the basic perovskite structures and their various dimensions (namely three-, two- and zero-dimensional perovskites), and demonstrate how the compositional engineering of these structures affects the perovskite light-emitting properties. Next, we turn to the physics underpinning photo- and electroluminescence in these materials through their connection to the fundamental excited states, energy/charge transport processes and radiative and non-radiative decay mechanisms. In the remainder of the review, we focus on the engineering of perovskite light-emitting diodes, including the history of their development as well as an extensive analysis of contemporary strategies for boosting device performance. Key concepts include balancing the electron/hole injection, suppression of parasitic carrier losses, improvement of the photoluminescence quantum yield and enhancement of the light extraction. Overall, this review reflects the current paradigm for perovskite lighting, and is intended to serve as a foundation to materials and device scientists newly working in this field.

Due to these properties, there is a potential for development of various innovative technologies and applications within the life sciences. In this study, experimental and theoretical results on the absorption and emission (steady state and time-resolved) properties of the hybrid ZnCl2(QO)2 complex formed between ZnCl2 and quinoline N-oxide, have been reported. Single crystal X-ray analysis revealed the tetragonal cell (Z = 4) with P41212 space group and a slight crystal distortion. Interestingly, experiments in aprotic solvents show that both absorption and emission spectra peak in the ultraviolet (UV) region suggesting a weak CT character of the emissive S1 state, confirmed by a middle Stokes shift values. The results of the nanosecond time-resolved emission spectroscopy suggest two different structures of the complex described by the two different lifetimes and variable amplitudes dependent on the polarity of the medium. In the solid state, a relatively strong, bright blue luminescence appears at 413 nm (τ = 2.26 ns). Theoretical calculations (DFT and TD DFT) confirm experimental studies and reveal the solvent-dependent chameleon properties of ZnCl2(QO)2 by two different structures in two solvents of a contrast polarity. In apolar cyclohexane (CHX, μ = 5.612 D), the planes of both lateral quinoline N-oxide (QO) rings show to be nearly parallel each to another, resembling the crystal structure, while in a strongly polar acetonitrile (AN, μ = 9.328 D) they are nearly perpendicular. Such parallel arrangement of quinoline rings of ZnCl2(QO)2 complex in weakly polar methylcyclohexane can hinder the process of Photoinduced Electron Transfer, resulting in a stronger emission and significant quantum yield in comparison to more polar media.

Abstract
As part of our interest in halogenobismuthate(iii) organic-inorganic hybrid materials, a novel compound named bis(4,4'-diammoniumdiphenylsulfone) hexadecaiodotetrabismuthate(III) tetrahydrate with the chemical formula (C12H14N2O2S)2[Bi4I16]·4H2O, abbreviated as (H2DDS)[Bi4I16], has been prepared by a slow evaporation method at room temperature. This compound was characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD), spectroscopic measurements, thermal study and antimicrobial activity. The examination of the molecular arrangement shows that the crystal packing can be described as made of layers of organic [C12H14N2O2S]2+ entities and H2O molecules, between which tetranuclear [Bi4I16]4- units, isolated from each other, are inserted. The cohesion among the different molecules is assured by N-H⋯I, N-H⋯O and O-H⋯I hydrogen bonding interactions, forming a three-dimensional network. Room temperature IR, Raman spectroscopy of the title compound were recorded and analyzed. The optical properties were also investigated by both UV-vis and photoluminescence spectroscopy. Moreover, the synthesized compound was also screened for in vitro antimicrobial (Gram-positive and Gram-negative) and antioxidant activities (scavenging effect on DPPH free radicals, reducing power and total antioxidant capacity).

Abstract
Crystallization from solutions containing 2,2'-[naphthalene-1,8:4,5-bis(dicarboximide)-N,N'-diyl]-bis(ethylammonium) diiodide ((NDIC2)I2) and PbI2 has been investigated. Eight different materials are obtained, either by variation of crystallization conditions or by subsequent thermal or solvent-induced transformations. Crystal structures have been determined for five materials. [(NDIC2)2Pb5I14(DMF)2]·4DMF (DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide) (1), [(NDIC2)Pb4I10]·4DMF (3), [(NDIC2)Pb2I6]·4NMP (NMP = N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone) (4), and [(NDIC2)Pb2I6]·2H2O (5) form 1-dimensional (1D) chains consisting of PbI6 (and, in the case of 1, PbI5(DMF)) octahedra, either solely face-sharing or a mixture of face-sharing and vertex-sharing. The structure of [(NDIC2)3Pb5I16]·6NMP (2) contains 0D clusters; these consist of three PbI6 octahedra and two unusually coordinated lead centers that exhibit three relatively short Pb-I bonds, two very long Pb-I contacts, and η2-coordination of an aromatic ring of NDIC2 to the lead. Close contacts between iodide ions and the imide rings of NDIC2 in four of the structures suggest that an iodide-to-NDIC2 charge-transfer interaction may be responsible for the observed red coloration of the materials. The optical and electrical properties of 1 have been studied; its onset of absorption is at 2.0 eV, and its conductivity was measured as 5.4 × 10-5 ± 1.1 × 10-5 S m-1.

Abstract
For the prototypical two-dimensional hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (2D HOIPs) (AE4T)PbX4 (X = Cl, Br, and I), we demonstrate that the Frenkel-Holstein Hamiltonian (FHH) can be applied to describe the absorption spectrum arising from the organic component. We first model the spectra using only the four nearest neighbor couplings between translationally inequivalent molecules in the organic herringbone lattice as fitting parameters in the FHH. We next use linear-response time-dependent density functional theory (LR-TDDFT) to calculate molecular transition densities, from which extended excitonic couplings are evaluated based on the atomic positions within the 2D HOIPs. We find that both approaches reproduce the experimentally observed spectra, including changes in their shape and peak positions. The spectral changes are correlated with a decrease in excitonic coupling from X = Cl to X = I. Importantly, the LR-TDDFT-based approach with extended excitonic couplings not only gives better agreement with the experimental absorption line shape than the approach using a restricted set of fitted parameters but also allows us to relate the changes in excitonic coupling to the underlying geometry. We accordingly find that the decrease in excitonic coupling from X = Cl to Br to I is due to an increase in molecular separation, which in turn can be related to the increasing Pb-X bond length from Cl to I. Our research opens up a potential pathway to predicting optoelectronic properties of new 2D HOIPs from ab initio calculations and to gain insight into structural relations from 2D HOIP absorption spectra.

Abstract
Two iodobismuthate-based organic-inorganic hybrids, [M(DMSO)8][Bi2I9] (M = La (1), Bi (2)), have been successfully designed and synthesized by using solvated metal cations as structure-directing agents (SDAs). 1 displays transient high-temperature thermochromism, which is similar to that of the characteristic low-temperature thermochromic properties of bulk bismuth iodide and iodobismuthate hybrids. In contrast, 2 exhibits distinguishing non-transient thermochromic properties stimulated by the different temperature ranges of the thermal treatments. More importantly, a comparison of the optical inertness of 1 and 2 also reveals novel photochromic behavior. The completely different thermo-/photo-responsive properties of 1 and 2 are mainly ascribed to the different binding abilities of the central metal cations with DMSO molecules, which cause a distinct transformation of the inorganic moiety and consequent modulation of band gaps.

Abstract
Hybrid halide perovskites are now superstar materials leading the field of low-cost thin film photovoltaics technologies. Following the surge for more efficient and stable 3D bulk alloys, multilayered halide perovskites and colloidal perovskite nanostructures appeared in 2016 as viable alternative solutions to this challenge, largely exceeding the original proof of concept made in 2009 and 2014, respectively. This triggered renewed interest in lower-dimensional hybrid halide perovskites and at the same time increasingly more numerous and differentiated applications. The present paper is a review of the past and present literature on both colloidal nanostructures and multilayered compounds, emphasizing that availability of accurate structural information is of dramatic importance to reach a fair understanding of quantum and dielectric confinement effects. Layered halide perovskites occupy a special place in the history of halide perovskites, with a large number of seminal papers in the 1980s and 1990s. In recent years, the rationalization of structure-properties relationship has greatly benefited from new theoretical approaches dedicated to their electronic structures and optoelectronic properties, as well as a growing number of contributions based on modern experimental techniques. This is a necessary step to provide in-depth tools to decipher their extensive chemical engineering possibilities which surpass the ones of their 3D bulk counterparts. Comparisons to classical semiconductor nanostructures and 2D van der Waals heterostructures are also stressed. Since 2015, colloidal nanostructures have undergone a quick development for applications based on light emission. Although intensively studied in the last two years by various spectroscopy techniques, the description of quantum and dielectric confinement effects on their optoelectronic properties is still in its infancy.

Abstract
Hybrid halide perovskites have become the "next big thing" in emerging semiconductor materials, as the past decade witnessed their successful application in high-performance photovoltaics. This resurgence has encompassed enormous and widespread development of the three-dimensional (3D) perovskites, spearheaded by CH3NH3PbI3. The next generation of halide perovskites, however, is characterized by reduced dimensionality perovskites, emphasizing the two-dimensional (2D) perovskite derivatives which expand the field into a more diverse subgroup of semiconducting hybrids that possesses even higher tunability and excellent photophysical properties. In this Perspective, we begin with a historical flashback to early reports before the "perovskite fever", and we follow this original work to its fruition in the present day, where 2D halide perovskites are in the spotlight of current research, offering characteristics desirable in high-performance optoelectronics. We approach the evolution of 2D halide perovskites from a structural perspective, providing a way to classify the diverse structure types of the materials, which largely dictate the unusual physical properties observed. We sort the 2D hybrid halide perovskites on the basis of two key components: the inorganic layers and their modification, and the organic cation diversity. As these two heterogeneous components blend, either by synthetic manipulation (shuffling the organic cations or inorganic elements) or by application of external stimuli (temperature and pressure), the modular perovskite structure evolves to construct crystallographically defined quantum wells (QWs). The complex electronic structure that arises is sensitive to the structural features that could be in turn used as a knob to control the dielectric and optical properties the QWs. We conclude this Perspective with the most notable achievements in optoelectronic devices that have been demonstrated to date, with an eye toward future material discovery and potential technological developments.

Abstract
For a class of 2D hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite semiconductors based on π-conjugated organic cations, we predict quantitatively how varying the organic and inorganic component allows control over the nature, energy, and localization of carrier states in a quantum-well-like fashion. Our first-principles predictions, based on large-scale hybrid density-functional theory with spin-orbit coupling, show that the interface between the organic and inorganic parts within a single hybrid can be modulated systematically, enabling us to select between different type-I and type-II energy level alignments. Energy levels, recombination properties, and transport behavior of electrons and holes thus become tunable by choosing specific organic functionalizations and juxtaposing them with suitable inorganic components.

Abstract
Bismuth-based hybrid perovskites are regarded as promising photo-active semiconductors for environment-friendly and air-stable solar cell applications. However, poor surface morphologies and relatively high bandgap energies have limited their potential. Silver-bismuth-iodine (Ag-Bi-I) is a promising semiconductor for optoelectronic devices. Therefore, we demonstrate the fabrication of Ag-Bi-I ternary thin films using material solution processing. The resulting thin films exhibit controlled surface morphologies and optical bandgaps according to their thermal annealing temperatures. In addition, it has been reported that Ag-Bi-I ternary systems crystallize to AgBi2I7, Ag2BiI5, etc. according to the ratio of the precursor chemicals. The solution-processed AgBi2I7 thin films exhibit a cubic-phase crystal structure, dense, pinhole-free surface morphologies with grains ranging in size from 200 to 800 nm, and an indirect bandgap of 1.87 eV. The resultant AgBi2I7 thin films show good air stability and energy band diagrams, as well as surface morphologies and optical bandgaps suitable for lead-free and air-stable single-junction solar cells. Very recently, a solar cell with 4.3% power conversion efficiency was obtained by optimizing the Ag-Bi-I crystal compositions and solar cell device architectures.

Abstract
We report novel two-dimensional lead halide perovskite structures templated by a unique conjugated aromatic dication, N,N-dimethylphenylene-p-diammonium (DPDA). The asymmetrically substituted primary and tertiary ammoniums in DPDA facilitate the formation of two-dimensional network (2DN) perovskite structures incorporating a conjugated dication between the PbX42- (X = Br, I) layers. These 2DN structures of (DPDA)PbI4 and (DPDA)PbBr4 were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, showing uniquely low distortions in the Pb-X-Pb bond angle for 2D perovskites. The Pb-I-Pb bond angle is very close to ideal (180°) for a 2DN lead iodide perovskite, which can be attributed to the ability of the rigid diammonium DPDA to insert into the PbX62- octahedral pockets. Optical characterization of (DPDA)PbI4 shows an excitonic absorption peak at 2.29 eV (541 nm), which is red-shifted in comparison to similar 2DN lead iodide structures. Temperature-dependent photoluminescence of both compounds reveals both a self-trapped exciton and free exciton emission feature. The reduced exciton absorption energy and emission properties are attributed to the dication-induced structural order of the inorganic PbX42- layers. DFT calculation results suggest mixing of the conjugated organic orbital component in the valence band of these 2DN perovskites. These results demonstrate a rational new strategy to incorporate conjugated organic dications into hybrid perovskites and will spur spectroscopic investigations of these compounds as well as optoelectronic applications.
