Novel Mixed-Valence Heteropolyoxometalates: A Molybdenum Diphosphonate Anion [MoV7MoVIO16(O3PPhPO3H)4]3- and Its One- and Two-Dimensional Assemblies

A High Nucleus Cu-Incorporated Giant Phosphotungstate with Photocatalytic Oxidation C-H of Toluene

Exploring a novel photocatalyst for catalytic oxidation of toluene is a sustainable strategy for energy conversion in times of an energy crisis. However, designing an effective photocatalyst for the conversion of toluene remains challenging. Herein, a novel organic monophosphonate-modified high nucleus Cu-incorporated polyoxotungstate, K8H33[{Cu0.5(H2O)4}{Cu2(O3PCH2COO)(1,4,9-α-P2W15O56)}]4·Cl·60H2O (1), has been intentionally synthesized by a self-assembly process utilizing conventional aqueous method. It reveals that 1 contains a polyanion of [{Cu0.5(H2O)}4{Cu2(O3PCH2COO)(1,4,9-α-P2W15O56)}]440- composed of four Dawson-type {1,4,9-α-P2W15} subunits, forming an oval-shaped structure and further connecting into a three-dimensional (3D) framework by lateral {Cu(H2O)4}2+. Interestingly, the trivacant {1,4,9-α-P2W15} subunits were observed in the organophosphonate acid-functionalized polyoxometalates for the first time. Notably, 1 exhibits a wonderful performance in catalytic oxidation of the recalcitrant C(sp3)-H bond of toluene to benzoic acid with a conversion as high as 97% under visible light utilizing O2 as an oxidant.

An Organodiphosphate-Containing Polyoxoniobate Ring and Its Assembly into a Three-Dimensional Framework through Hydrogen Bonding

In this work, a novel organodiphosphate-containing inorganic-organic hybrid polyoxoniobate (PONb) ring {(PO3CH2CH2PO3H)4Nb8O16}4- (Nb8P8) has been achieved by a one-pot hydrothermal method. The ring is constructed from a tetragonal {Nb8O36} motif and four {PO3CH2CH2PO3H} ligands. Interestingly, Nb8P8 can be joined together via K-H2O clusters {K2(H2O)4(OH)2} to form one-dimensional chains {[K2(H2O)4(OH)2]Nb8P8}n and further linked by {Cu(en)2}2+ (en = ethylenediamine) complexes, resulting in a three-dimensional supramolecular framework {[Cu(en)2]2[K2(H2O)4(OH)2]Nb8P8}·3en·H2O (1). 1 exhibits good chemical and thermal stability and has a high water vapor adsorption capacity of ≤224 cm3 g-1 (22.71 mol·mol-1) at 298 K, outperforming most of the known polyoxometalate-based materials. Impedance measurements prove that 1 can transfer protons with moderate conductivity. This study not only contributes to the structural diversity of organodiphosphate-containing PONbs and PONb rings but also provides a reference for the development of PONb-based materials with unique performance.

Organic-inorganic one-dimensional hybrid aggregates constructed from aromatic-bisphosphonate-functionalized polyoxomolybdates

Five novel lanthanide-substituted polyoxomolybdates (NH₄)₅Na₃H₂[{Ln(H₂O)₇}₂{Mo₅O₁₅(1,4-O₃PCH₂C₆H₄CH₂PO₃)}₄]·nH₂O [Ln = Tb³⁺ (1), Ho³⁺ (2), Er³⁺ (3), Tm³⁺ (4), Yb³⁺ (5); n = 33, 32, 41, 30, 47] have been prepared in a conventional aqueous solution reaction of ammonium molybdate with Ln³⁺ ions and p-xylyenediphosphonic acid. Crystal structure analyses reveal that 1-5 are isomorphic. The prominent architecture characteristic is that their structural units consist of a tetrameric cyclic-shaped [{Mo₅O₁₅(1,4-O₃PCH₂C₆H₄CH₂PO₃)}₄]^16- segment stabilized by two [Ln(H₂O)₇]³⁺ cations, which are connected to propagate one-dimensional chain by Ln³⁺ ions. As is known, compounds 1-5 stand for the first Ln-substituted aromatic-bisphosphonate-functionalized polyoxomolybdates. The solid-state photoluminescence measurement of 1 has been performed at ambient temperature, and it displayed the characteristic emissions of Tb ions based on its 4f-4f transitions. In addition, the magnetic properties of 1-5 compounds show that they all exhibit anti-ferromagnetic interactions.

Phosphonate Decomposition-Induced Polyoxomolybdate Dumbbell-Type Cluster Formation: Structural Analysis, Proton Conduction, and Catalytic Sulfoxide Reduction

The reaction of MoO₄^2- with a number of phosphonic acids [bis(phosphonomethyl)glycine, R,S-hydroxyphosphonoacetic acid, 1-hydroxyethane-1,1-diphosphonic acid, phenylphosphonic acid, aminotris(methylene phosphonic acid), and 1,2-ethylenediphosphonic acid] under oxidizing (H₂O₂) hydrothermal conditions at low pH leads to rupture of the P-C bond, release of orthophosphate ions, and generation of the octanuclear, phosphate-bridged, polyoxometalate molybdenum cluster (NH₄)₅[Mo₈(OH)₂O₂₄(μ₈-PO₄)](H₂O)₂ (POMPhos). This cluster has been fully characterized and its structure determined. It was studied as a proton conductor, giving moderate values of σ = 2.13 × 10^-5 S·cm^-1 (25 °C) and 1.17 × 10^-4 S·cm^-1 (80 °C) at 95% relative humidity, with E_a = 0.27 eV. The POMPhos cluster was then thermally treated at 310 °C, yielding (NH₄)_2.6(H₃O)_0.4(PO₄Mo₁₂O₃₆) together with an amorphous impurity containing phosphate and molybdenum oxide. This product was also studied for its proton conductivity properties, giving rise to an impressively high value of σ = 2.43 × 10^-3 S·cm^-1 (25 °C) and 6.67 × 10^-3 S·cm^-1 (80 °C) at 95% relative humidity, 2 orders of magnitude higher than those corresponding to the "as-synthesized" solid. The utilization of POMPhos in catalytic reduction of different sulfoxides was also evaluated. POMPhos acts as an efficient homogeneous catalyst for the reduction of diphenyl sulfoxide to diphenyl sulfide, as a model reaction. Pinacol was used as a low-cost, environmentally friendly, and highly efficient reducing agent. The effects of different reaction parameters were investigated, namely the type of solvent and reducing agent, presence of acid promoter, reaction time and temperature, loading of catalyst and pinacol, allowing to achieve up to 84-99% yields of sulfide products under optimized conditions. Substrate scope was tested on the examples of diaryl, alkylaryl, dibenzyl, and dialkyl sulfoxides and excellent product yields were obtained.

Molecular Structures of the Products of a Diphosphonate Ester Building Block with Lewis Bases

By treating a suitable Wittig reagent under acid conditions, the phosphonate ester 1,4-bimethylenebenzene phosphonate ethyl ester (H₂[BBPE], 1) was obtained. As a building block, compound 1 has been reacted with the Lewis-base N,N-dimethylpiperazine, ammonia and NaOH yielded compounds 2–4. The crystal structures show that a 1D chain forming a tubular channel is constructed through hydrogen bonds in 1; hydrogen bonds form two 1D chains with left-hand and right-hand helixes and form 3D networks in compound 2; 1D hydrogen-bond chains are further connected together to afford a 3D network architecture in compound 3; the phosphonate is coordinated by two Na atoms which present different coordination environments in compound 4. Additionally, the relationships between the structure and fluorescence of the four compounds in the solid state and in different solvents have also been studied at room temperature.

Grafting transition metal–organophosphonate fragments onto heteropolyoxomolybdate: activity in photocatalysis

Polyanion 1a can be seen as the structure decorated by three isolated {Ni(OOCCH₂NHCH₂PO₃)₂} based on the “Z-shaped” framework {Ni₃O₂(H₂O)₆(PMo₆O₂₄)₂(μ₃-O)₂(μ₂-O)₆}.

Two Mixed-Valence Vanadium(III,IV) Phosphonoacetates with 16-Ring Channels: H2(DABCO)[VIVO(H2O)VIII(OH)(O3PCH2CO2)2]·2.5H2O and H2(PIP)[VIVO(H2O)VIII(OH)(O3PCH2CO2)2]·2.5H2O

Two isostructural mixed-valence vanadium phosphonoacetates H2(DABCO)[V(IV)O(H2O)V(III)(OH)(O3PCH2CO2)2].2.5H2O (1) and H2(PIP)[V(IV)O(H2O)V(III)(OH)(O3PCH2CO2)2].2.5H2O (2) have been synthesized. They crystallize in the orthorhombic space group Pnna with a = 7.0479(10) A, b = 15.307(2) A, and c = 17.537(3) A for 1 and a = 7.0465(9) A, b = 15.646(2) A, and c = 17.396(2) A for 2. X-ray single-crystal diffraction reveals that 1 and 2 have a three-dimensional open framework featuring 16-ring ellipsoid channels that are filled with doubly protonated 1,4-diazabicyclo[2,2,2]octanium/piperazinium cations and water molecules. According to the classification in metal-organic frameworks, 1 and 2 contain infinite (-O-V-)(infinity) chains that are cross-linked by "metalloligand" [VO(H2O)(O3PCH2CO2)2](4-) into a 3-D net of the sra topology. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility of 1 shows that the chi(m)T value in the range of 60-320 K is constant of 1.105 cm3 K mol(-1)/V2 unit, and upon further cooling, the chi(m)T value rapidly increases to 1.81 cm3 K mol(-1) at 2 K. The corresponding effective magnetic moment (mu(eff))/V2 unit varies from 2.97 mu(B) at 320 K to 3.80 mu(B) at 2 K. The magnetic data in the range of 2-320 K follow the Curie-Weiss law with C = 1.074 cm3 K mol(-1) and Theta= -1.34 K.

Two New Hybrid Organic/Inorganic Copper(II)−Oxovanadate(V) Diphosphonates: [Cu2(phen)2(O3PCH2PO3)(V2O5)(H2O)]·H2O and [Cu2(phen)2(O3P(CH2)3PO3)(V2O5)]·C3H8. Synthesis, Structure, and Magnetic Properties

Two new hybrid organic/inorganic copper oxovanadium diphosphonates [Cu2(phen)2(O3PCH2PO3)(V2O5)(H2O)] x H2O (1) and [(Cu2(phen)2(O3P(CH2)3PO3)(V2O5)] x C3H8 (2) have been obtained by hydrothermal synthesis. The compounds are monoclinic, and they crystallize in the space group P2(1)/n with cell parameters of a = 11.788(2) A, b = 17.887(3) A, c = 14.158(2) A, and beta = 93.99(0) degrees and in the space group C2/c with cell parameters of a = 11.025(1) A, b = 18.664(2) A, c = 15.054(2) A, and beta = 90.06(0) degrees, respectively. Both compounds present two-dimensional frameworks built up from infinite chains of corner-sharing vanadium tetrahedra and diphosphonate groups connected by copper tetramers for (1) and copper dimers for (2). The remarkable feature of (2) is the encapsulation of propane molecules, stabilized by strong hydrogen bonding between the layers. The magnetic properties of the compounds have been investigated showing antiferromagnetic coupling with Tmax = 64 K for (1) and Curie-like paramagnetic behavior for (2).
