Bridging Fluorides and Hard/Soft Mismatch in d6 and d8 Complexes: The Case of [Tl(μ-F)3Ru(PPh3)3]

Thallium-Fluorides Revisited: Crystal Chemistry of TlHF2, Tl2[MF6]·2TlF, and Tl2[MF6]·TlCl (M = Si and Ge)

Although the formation of thallium hydrogen fluorides TlHxFx+1 (x = 1, 1.5, 2, 3, 5, 6.5, and 7) from TlF and HF was reported in the 1970s, little is known about the corresponding crystal structures. To shed light on the crystal chemistry of the thallium fluorides, we reinvestigated the structure of α-TlHF2, which was obtained by crystallization of TlF from 50% HF at room temperature. We disclose that β-TlHF2 is isostructural with α-MHF2 (M = K, Rb, and Cs), γ-TlHF2 is isostructural with β-MHF2 (M = K and Rb), whereas α-TlHF2 crystallizes in an unusual structure type. During the reaction of TlHF2 with the glass of the microscope slide, crystals of the previously unknown compound Tl2[SiF6]·2TlF were formed. We disclose that the related Tl2[GeF6]·2TlF can be obtained by the crystallization of stoichiometric amounts of Tl2[GeF6] with TlF from water at room temperature. The crystal structures of α-TlHF2, Tl2[SiF6]·2TlF, Tl2[SiF6]·TlCl, Tl2[GeF6]·2TlF, Tl2[GeF6]·TlCl, and Tl2[GeF6] were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The crystal structures of α-TlF and Tl2[SiF6]·xTlF (x = 0, 1) were redetermined at low temperatures.

Coinage Metal Hydrides: Synthesis, Characterization, and Reactivity

Hydride complexes of copper, silver, and gold encompass a broad array of structures, and their distinctive reactivity has enabled dramatic recent advances in synthesis and catalysis. This Review summarizes the synthesis, characterization, and key stoichiometric reactions of isolable or observable coinage metal hydrides. It discusses catalytic processes in which coinage metal hydrides are known or probable intermediates, and presents mechanistic studies of selected catalytic reactions. The purpose of this Review is to convey how developments in coinage metal hydride chemistry have led to new organic transformations, and how developments in catalysis have in turn inspired the synthesis of reactive new complexes.

Fluoride, bifluoride and trifluoromethyl complexes of iridium(i) and rhodium(i)

New methods for the preparation of a range of NHC-based Ir(i) and Rh(i) fluoride, bifluoride and trifluoromethyl complexes are reported.

Asymmetric Diels-Alder and Ficini reactions with alkylidene β-ketoesters catalyzed by chiral ruthenium PNNP complexes: mechanistic insight

Hydride abstraction from the β-position of the enolato ligand of the previously reported complex [Ru(3a-H)(PNNP)]PF(6) (5a; 3a-H is the enolate of 2-tert-butoxycarbonylcyclopentanone) with (Ph(3)C)PF(6) gives the dicationic complex [Ru(6a)(PNNP)](2+) (7a) as a single diastereoisomer, which contains the unsaturated β-ketoester 2-tert-butoxycarbonyl-2-cyclopenten-1-one (6a) as a chelating ligand. The methyl analogue 2-methoxycarbonylcyclopentanone (3b) gives [Ru(3b-H)(PNNP)]PF(6) as a mixture of noninterconverting diastereoisomers (ester group of 3b trans to P, 5b; or to N, 5c), which were separated by column chromatography. Hydride abstraction from 5b (or 5c) yields diastereomerically pure [Ru(6b)(PNNP)](2+) (7b or 7c). Complexes 7b and 7c do not interconvert at room temperature in CD(2)Cl(2) and form opposite enantiomers of the Diels-Alder adduct upon reaction with Dane's diene (1 equiv). X-ray studies of 7a, 5b, and 5c give insight into the origin of enantioselection and the sense of asymmetric induction in the previously reported asymmetric Diels-Alder and Ficini cycloaddition reactions with 2,3-disubstituted butadienes and ynamides, respectively. Stoichiometric reactions (substrate coordination, cycloaddition, and product displacement) between [Ru(OEt(2))(2)(PNNP)](2+) (2), 6b (or 6a), and Dane's diene (15, to give estrone derivatives) or N-benzyl-N-(cyclohexylethynyl)-4-methylbenzenesulfonamide (17, to give cyclobutenamides) suggest that product displacement from the catalyst is turnover limiting.

Synthesis of Pd3Tl and Pd6Tl2 complexes based on a trinuclear aryl-palladium(II) complex acting as a metallaligand toward thallium(I) through Tl-arene and Tl-I bonds

The metallaligand [(PdIL(2))(3)(C(6)Me(3)-1,3,5)] (L(2) = 4,4'-di-tert-butyl-2-2'-bipyridine = tbbpy) reacts with TlOTf to afford the complex [{(PdIL(2))(3)C(6)Me(3)-1,3,5}Tl]OTf, which exists in the solid state as a 2:1 mixture of monomer and dimer, both showing Tl(I)-I and Tl(I)-η(6)-mesitylene bonds. In solution, only the monomer is observed. Heating of toluene solutions of [(PdIL(2))(3)(C(6)Me(3)-1,3,5)] affords the dinuclear complex [(PdIL(2))(2)(C(6)HMe(3)-1,3,5)].

Mechanism of C-F reductive elimination from palladium(IV) fluorides

The first systematic mechanism study of C-F reductive elimination from a transition metal complex is described. C-F bond formation from three different Pd(IV) fluoride complexes was mechanistically evaluated. The experimental data suggest that reductive elimination occurs from cationic Pd(IV) fluoride complexes via a dissociative mechanism. The ancillary pyridyl-sulfonamide ligand plays a crucial role for C-F reductive elimination, likely due to a kappa(3) coordination mode, in which an oxygen atom of the sulfonyl group coordinates to Pd. The pyridyl-sulfonamide can support Pd(IV) and has the appropriate geometry and electronic structure to induce reductive elimination.

The First Open-Paddlewheel Structures in Diruthenium Chemistry: Examples of Intermediate Magnetic Behaviour between Low and High Spin in Ru25+ Species

The reaction of [Ru(2)Cl(O(2)CMe)(DPhF)(3)] (DPhF=N,N'-diphenylformamidinate) with aqueous HCl leads to the substitution of the acetate ligand to give the complex [Ru(2)Cl(2)(DPhF)(3)] (1). Similar reaction of [Ru(2)(O(2)CMe)(DPhF)(3)(H(2)O)]BF(4) with aqueous HBr or HI produces [Ru(2)Br(2)(DPhF)(3)] (2), and [Ru(2)I(2)(DPhF)(3)] (3), respectively. The reaction of 1 with AgBF(4) to form the highly unsaturated unit [Ru(2)(DPhF)(3)](2+), which is isolated as [Ru(2)(BF(4))(DPhF)(3)(H(2)O)]BF(4) (4), and [Ru(2)(MeCN)(2)(DPhF)(3)](BF(4))(2) (5), is also reported. The use of AgNO(3) instead of AgBF(4) leads to [Ru(2)(NO(3))(2)(DPhF)(3)] (6). The magnetic behaviour of complexes 1-4 and 6 is intermediate between high- and low-spin configurations. A relationship between the magnetic behaviour and the visible-near-infrared (Vis-NIR) spectra is apparent. In addition, the crystal structure determinations of 2, 4.THF, and 6, have been carried out. Complexes 1-3, 5 and 6 are the first examples of open-paddlewheel structures in diruthenium chemistry. The BF(4) (-) bridging the metal centres in 4THF is activated and forms very short Ru-F bonds.

Fluoride-selective optical sensor based on aluminum(III)-octaethylporphyrin in thin polymeric film: further characterization and practical application

More detailed analytical studies of a new fluoride-selective optical sensor based on the use of aluminum(III)-octaethylporphyrin and a lipophilic pH indicator (4',5'-dibromofluorescein octadecyl ester; ETH-7075) within a thin plasticized poly(vinyl chloride) film are reported. The sensor exhibits extraordinary optical selectivity for fluoride over a wide range of other anions, including anions with far more positive free energies of hydration (e.g., perchlorate, thiocyanate, nitrate, etc.). UV-visible spectrophotometric studies of the sensing films indicate that fluoride interacts with the Al(III) center of the porphyrin structure, yielding both a change in the Soret band lambda(max) of the porphyrin and a change in the protonation state of the pH indicator within the film. The same change in spectral properties of the metalloporphyrin occurs in the absence of added pH indicator or with added tetraphenylborate derivative anionic sites, but optical responses to fluoride in these cases are shown to be irreversible. The presence of the pH indicator and the simultaneous fluoride/proton coextraction equilibrium chemistry is shown to greatly enhance the reversibility of fluoride binding to the Al(III) porphyrin. Optical response toward fluoride can be observed in the range of 0.1 microM-1.6 mM. Optical selectivity coefficients of <10(-6) for common anions (e.g., sulfate, chloride, nitrate, etc.) and <10(-4) for perchlorate and thiocyanate are obtained. Measurements of fluoride in drinking water via the new optical sensor are shown to correlate well with values obtained for the same samples using a classical LaF3-based fluoride ion-selective electrode method.

Synthesis and Reactivity of Dimeric Ar‘TlTlAr‘ and Trimeric (Ar‘ ‘Tl)3(Ar‘, Ar‘ ‘ = Bulky Terphenyl Group) Thallium(I) Derivatives: Tl(I)−Tl(I) Bonding in Species Ligated by Monodentate Ligands

The synthesis and characterization of three new organothallium(I) compounds are reported. Reaction of (Ar'Li)(2) (Ar' = C(6)H(3)-2,6-(C(6)H(3)-2,6-Pr(i)(2))(2)) and Ar"Li (Ar" = C(6)H(3)-2,6-(C(6)H(3)-2,6-Me(2))(2)) with TlCl in Et(2)O afforded (Ar'Tl)(2) (1) and (Ar' 'Tl)(3) (2). The "dithallene" 1 is the heaviest group 13 dimetallene and features a planar, trans-bent structure with Ar'Tl-Tl = 119.74(14) degrees and Tl-Tl = 3.0936(8) A. Compound 2 is the first structurally characterized neutral, three-membered ring species of formula c-(MR)(3) (M = Al-Tl; R = organo group). The Tl(3) ring has Tl-Tl distances in the range ca. 3.21-3.37 A as well as pyramidal Tl geometries. The Tl-Tl bonds in 1 and 2 are outside the range (2.88-2.97 A) of Tl-Tl single bonds in R(2)TlTlR(2) compounds. The weak Tl-Tl bonding in 1 and 2 leads to their dissociation into Ar'Tl and Ar' 'Tl monomers in hexane. The Ar'Tl monomer behaves as a Lewis base and readily forms a 1:1 donor-acceptor complex with B(C(6)F(5))(3) to give Ar'TlB(C(6)F(5))(3), 3. Adduct 3 features an almost linear thallium C(ipso)-Tl-B angle of 174.358(7) degrees and a Tl-B distance of 2.311(2) A, which indicates strong association. Treatment of 1 with a variety of reagents resulted in no reactions. The lower reactivity of 1 is in accord with the reluctance of Tl(I) to undergo oxidation to Tl(III) due to the unreactive character of the 6s(2) electrons.

Difluoro Complexes of Platinum(II) and -(IV) with Monodentate Phosphine Ligands: An Exceptional Stability of d6Octahedral Organometallic Fluorides

Complexes (R3P)2PtF2 were prepared by reaction of the corresponding diiodo precursors with AgF in dichloromethane. The intermediate formation of trans- and cis-(R3P)2Pt(I)F was also observed. All fluoro complexes demonstrate a strong preference for the cis-configuration (R = Ph or Et) unless a bulky phosphine ligand is used (R = i-Pr), in which case the trans complex was observed. The Pt(IV) difluoro compounds (R3P)2Ar2PtF2 were obtained by reacting the Pt(II) diaryl precursors with XeF2. The fluoro ligands are located in the trans-position relative to the aryl groups in the overall octahedral environment. The representative Pt(II) and Pt(IV) difluoro complexes were characterized by X-ray crystallography. All fluoro compounds react rapidly with chlorotrimethylsilane to give the corresponding chloro complexes. The Pt(IV) difluorides are remarkably stable in the C-C reductive elimination reaction, relative to their dichloro analogs which reductively eliminate diaryl within several hours at 45 degrees C in N-methylpyrrolidone. It was found that phosphine dissociation from the octahedral Pt(IV) complex is essential for the reductive elimination reaction to take place, the difluoro complex being kinetically stable even at 60 degrees C.

Routes to unique palladium A-frame complexes with a bridging fluoro-ligand

Treatment of a toluene solution of [PdMe(2)(Cy(2)PCH(2)PCy(2))](1) with pentafluoropyridine in the presence of traces of water affords the generation of the A-frame complexes [(PdMe)(2){mu-kappa(2)(P,P)Cy(2)PCH(2)PCy(2)}(2)(mu-F)][SiMeF(4)]() and [(PdMe)(2){mu-kappa(2)(P,P)Cy(2)PCH(2)PCy(2)}(2)(mu-F)][OC(5)NF(4)](2b). If the reaction is performed in an NMR tube equipped with a PFA inliner, complex 2b is produced, only. Treatment of 1 with pentafluoropyridine in the presence of an excess water yields the pyridyloxy complex [PdMe(OC(5)NF(4))(Cy(2)PCH(2)PCy(2))](3). Compound [(PdMe)(2){mu-kappa(2)(P,P)Cy(2)PCH(2)PCy(2)}(2)(mu-F)][FHF](2c) bearing a bifluoride anion instead of SiMeF(4)(-) or OC(5)NF(4)(-) can be generated by reaction of 1 with substoichiometric amounts of Et(3)N.3HF. The analogous complex [(PdMe)(2){mu-kappa(2)(P,P)Ph(2)PCH(2)PPh(2)}(2)(mu-F)][FHF] (5c) has been synthesized by addition of Ph(2)PCH(2)PPh(2) to a solution of [PdMe(2)(Me(2)NCH(2)CH(2)NMe(2))](4) in THF and subsequent treatment of the reaction mixture with Et(3)N.3HF. The structure of the A-frame complex 5c has been determined by X-ray crystallography.
