Abstract
The synthesis, characterisation and reactivity of new phosphine-functionalised tris(pyrazolyl)methane ligands (TpmPR2, 2a-c, with R = Ph, nBu, iPr) are presented. The reaction of 2a-c with [Rh(CO)2Cl]2 furnished N,P-heterochelate carbonyl complexes (3a-c), which were used to quantify the donor abilities of the ligands via IR spectroscopy. The coordination flexibility was demonstrated by treating representative members of this new ligand class with [CpRu(acn)3][PF6] (acn = acetonitrile), [(tht)AuCl] (tht = tetrahydrothiophene) and [Pd(allyl)Cl]2 providing either a N,N,P-heteroscorpionate complex (4) or the P-coordinated complexes (5,6) without any involvement of the pyrazolyl entities. With 2a and [Pd(cod)Cl2], another P,N-heterochelate complex (7) was obtained, which served as a precursor for a heterobimetallic complex containing palladium and copper (8). Detailed NMR spectroscopic and X-ray crystallographic investigations have been performed on all new complexes.

Abstract
Tetravalent zirconium complexes supported by tridentate bis-phenolate imidazolidin-2-ylidene (L1), imidazol-2-ylidene (L2) and benzimidazol-2-ylidene (L3) NHC ligands were synthesized and evaluated as precursors for the copolymerization of cyclohexene oxide (CHO) with CO2. While the reactivity of the imidazolidinium [H3L1] chloride salt with Zr(OiPr)4(HOiPr), and subsequent ligand exchanges with either (CH3)3SiCl or LiOiPr lead to a series of heteroleptic compounds (κ3-O,C,O-L1)Zr(X)2(THF) (X = Cl, OiPr), both imidazolium [H3L2] and benzimidazolium [H3L3] chloride salts give a mixture of homoleptic (κ3-O,C,O-NHC)2Zr and zwitterionic (κ2-O,O-HL)ZrCl2(OiPr) compounds along with traces or the absence of the heteroleptic intermediate (κ3-O,C,O-NHC)Zr(Cl)(OiPr)(THF). Such dissimilar reactivity between the unsaturated and saturated NHC ligands is predominantly ascribed to the increased acidity of azolium salts along with the π-donor strength of the Ccarbene in L2 and L3-Zr moieties. The reactivity with the more acidic azolium salts (H3L2/3) and the destabilized Zr-Xtrans to NHCcarbene bond results in a significant increase in the amount of homoleptic compounds generating HCl. The released HCl reacts preferentially with the heteroleptic intermediates having non-planar NHC ligands (i.e. L2/3) promoting the formation of zwitterionic complexes. The in situ deprotonation of the isolated zwitterionic (κ2-O,O-HL3)ZrCl2(OiPr) compound by using Ag2O gives the homoleptic complex as the major component along with a bimetallic hydroxo-bridged [(κ3-O,C,O-L3)Zr(μ-OH)(OiPr)]2 compound. Of particular interest is that only the heteroleptic NHC-Zr(iv) complexes were identified to be active and highly selective towards the copolymerization of CHO with CO2 independently of the co-catalysts used (both anionic and neutral) under mild conditions (PCO2 < 1 bar, T = 60 °C), and gave atactic and completely alternating copolymers in a controlled manner (Mw/Mn ≈ 1.3-1.8). In contrast, the isolated homoleptic, zwitterionic and bimetallic zirconium species were found to be inactive under similar reaction conditions. Although the activity found for NHC-Zr(iv) complexes is nearly of the same order of magnitude as that of the NHC-Ti(iv) analogues, these results are the first examples of tetravalent zirconium complexes achieving high selectivity (99% in PCHC) in the catalyzed copolymerization of CHO with CO2.

Abstract
The structural identification in solution of the Zr(iv) complexes involving two 2,2-biphenol-based proligands is reported. The proligand L(1)H2 contains one 2,2-biphenol unit whereas L(2)H4 incorporates two 2,2-biphenol units linked by a para-phenylene bridge. Diffusion Ordered Spectroscopy (DOSY) combined with electrospray mass spectrometry analysis and density functional theory (DFT) allowed for determining the molecular structures of such Zr(iv)-based architectures. It is proposed that [Zr(OPr(i))4(HOPr(i))] in the presence of L(1)H2 generates an octahedral complex formulated as [ZrL(1)3H2]. Concerning the self-assembled architecture incorporating the L(2) ligand, the analytical data highlight the formation of an unprecedented neutral Zr(iv) triple-stranded helicate ([Zr2L(2)3H4]). Insight into the geometry of these complexes is obtained via DFT calculations. Remarkably, the helicate structure characterized in solution strongly contrasts with the triple-stranded structure of the complex that crystallizes.

Abstract
Complex formation and the coordination of zirconium with acetic acid were investigated with Zr K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (EXAFS) and single-crystal diffraction. Zr K-edge EXAFS spectra show that a stepwise increase of acetic acid in aqueous solution with 0.1 M Zr(IV) leads to a structural rearrangement from initial tetranuclear hydrolysis species [Zr4(OH)8(OH2)16]8+ to a hexanuclear acetate species Zr6(O)4(OH)4(CH3COO)12. The solution species Zr6(O)4(OH)4(CH3COO)12 was preserved in crystals by slow evaporation of the aqueous solution. Single-crystal diffraction reveals an uncharged hexanuclear cluster in solid Zr6(μ3-O)4(μ3-OH)4(CH3COO)12·8.5H2O. EXAFS measurements show that the structures of the hexanuclear zirconium acetate cluster in solution and the solid state are identical.

Abstract
The ongoing study of zirconium- and hafnium-porphyrinic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) led to the discovery of isostructural MOFs based on Zr8 and Hf8 clusters, which are unknown in both cluster and MOF chemistry. The Zr8O6 cluster features an idealized Zr8 cube, in which each Zr atom resides on one vertex and each face of the cube is capped by one μ4-oxygen atom. On each edge of the cube, a carboxylate from a porphyrinic ligand bridges two Zr atoms to afford a 3D MOF with a very rare (4,12)-connected ftw topology, in which two types of polyhedral cages with diameters of ∼1.1 and ∼2.0 nm and a cage opening of ∼0.8 nm are found. The isostructural Zr- and Hf-MOFs exhibit high surface areas, gas uptakes, and catalytic selectivity for cyclohexane oxidation.

Abstract
The heteroscorpionate ligand bis(3,5-di-tert-butylpyrazol-1-yl)dithioacetate (bdtbpzdta) has been synthesized by reacting bis(3,5-di-tert-butylpyrazol-1-yl)methane with n-BuLi and CS2. The ligand was isolated as [bis(3,5-di-tert-butylpyrazol-1-yl)dithioacetato](tetrahydrofuran)lithium(I) tetrahydrofuran monosolvate, [Li(C24H39N4S2)(C4H8O)]·C4H8O or [Li(bdtbpzdta)(THF)]·THF, in which the lithium cation is bound by the κ(3)N,N',S-coordinated heteroscorpionate ligand. A similar coordination mode is observed for a zinc chloride complex bearing the bdtbpzdta ligand, namely [bis(3,5-di-tert-butylpyrazol-1-yl)dithioacetato]chloridozinc(II), [Zn(C24H39N4S2)Cl] or [Zn(bdtbpzdta)Cl], which exhibits κ(3)N,N',S-coordination and resembles the active site of zinc-containing peptide deformylases (PDFs).

Abstract
Neutral Zr(IV) and Hf(IV) dimethyl complexes stabilized by unsymmetrical dianionic {N,C,N'} pincer ligands have been prepared from their corresponding bis-amido complexes upon treatment with AlMe3. Their structure consists of a central σ-bonded aryl donor group (C) capable of forming robust M-C bonds with the metal center, enforced by the synergic effect of both the coordination of peripheral donor groups (N) and the chelating rigid structure of the {N,C,N} ligand framework. Such a combination translates into systems having a unique balance between stability and reactivity. These Zr(IV) and Hf(IV) dimethyl complexes were converted in situ into cationic species [M(IV){N(-),C(-),N}Me][B(C6F5)4] which are active catalysts for the room temperature (r.t.) intramolecular hydroamination/cyclization of primary and secondary aminoalkenes as well as for the high temperature ethylene-1-octene copolymerizations.

Abstract
Neutral Zr(IV) and Hf(IV) diamido complexes stabilized by unsymmetrical dianionic N,C,N' pincer ligands have been prepared through the simplest and convenient direct metal-induced Caryl-H bond activation. Simple ligand modification has contributed to highlight the non-innocent role played by the donor atom set in the control of the cyclometallation kinetics. The as-prepared bis-amido catalysts were found to be good candidates for the intramolecular hydroamination/cyclization of primary aminoalkenes. The ability of these compounds to promote such a catalytic transformation efficiently (by providing, in some cases, fast and complete substrate conversion at room temperature) constitutes a remarkable step forward toward catalytic systems that can operate at relatively low catalyst loading and under milder reaction conditions. Kinetic studies and substrate-scope investigations, in conjunction with preliminary DFT calculations on the real systems, were used to elucidate the effects of the substrate substitution on the catalyst performance and to support the most reliable mechanistic path operative in the hydroamination reaction.

Synthesis and structural characterization of a family of modified hafnium tert-butoxide for use as precursors to hafnia nanoparticles. Inorg Chem 2012; 51:12075-92. Abstract
A series of modified, hafnium tert-butoxide ([Hf(OBu(t))4]) compounds (1-26) were crystallographically characterized, and representative species were then used to produce HfO2nanoparticles. This systematically varied family of [Hf(OR)4] compounds was developed from the reaction of [Hf(OBu(t))4] with a series of (i) Lewis basic solvents, tetrahydrofuran, pyridine, or 1-methylimidazole; (ii) simple phenols, HOC6H4(R)-2 or HOC6H3(R)2-2,6 where R = CH3, CH(CH3)2, or C(CH3)3; and (iii) complex polydentate alcohols, tetrahydrofuran methanol (H-OTHF), pyridinecarbinol (H-OPy), and tris(hydroxymethylethane) (THME-H3). The solvent-modified products were crystallographically characterized as [Hf(OBu(t))4(solv)n] (1-3). The phenoxide (OAr)-exchanged [Hf(OBu(t))4] products isolated from toluene were characterized as dimeric [Hf(OAr)n(OBu(t))4-n]2 (4 and 5) or [Hf(μ-OH)(OAr)3(HOBu(t))]2 (6 and 7) for the less sterically demanding OAr ligands and [Hf(OAr)n(OBu(t))4-n(HOBu(t))] (8 and 9) monomers for the larger OAr ligands. When Lewis basic solvents were employed, solvated monomers of varied OAr substitutions were observed as [Hf(OAr)n(OBu(t))4-n(solv)x], where solv = THF (10, 11, and 13-15) and py (16 and 19-21). The nuclearities of the remaining complex polydentate alcohol derivatives ranged from monomers (24, OPy) to dimers (22, OTHF; 23, OPy) to tetramers (25 and 26, THME). On the basis of their nuclearities, select members of this family of [Hf(OR)4] compounds (monomer, [Hf(OBu(t))4], 8; dimer, 19a, 22; tetramer, 25) were used to determine the validity of using [Hf(OR)4] precursors for the production of hafnia (HfO2) nanoparticles under solvothermal (oleylamine/oleic acid) conditions. After a 650 °C thermal treatment, the resulting powder X-ray diffraction pattern for each powder was found to be consistent with HfO2 (PDF 00-040-1173), and after a 1000 °C treatment, larger particles of HfO2 (PDF 00-043-1017) were reported. Transmission electron microscopy images confirmed that nanomaterials had formed. Because identical processing conditions had been employed for each HfO2 nanomaterial, the morphological variations observed in this study may be attributed to the individual precursors ("precursor structure affect").

Abstract
Three different zirconium thio and oxothio clusters, characterized by different coordination modes of dithioacetate and/or monothioacetate ligands, were obtained by the reaction of monothioacetic acid with zirconium n-butoxide, Zr(O(n)Bu)4, in different experimental conditions. In particular, we isolated the three polynuclear Zr3(μ3-SSSCCH3)2(SSCCH3)6·2(n)BuOH (Zr3), Zr4(μ3-O)2(μ-η(1)-SOCCH3)2(SOCCH3)8(O(n)Bu)2 (Zr4), and Zr6(μ3-O)5(μ-SOCCH3)2(μ-OOCCH3)(SOCCH3)11((n)BuOH) (Zr6) derivatives, presenting some peculiar characteristics. Zr6 has an unusual star-shaped structure. Only sulfur-based ligands, viz., chelating dithioacetate monoanions and an unusual ethane-1,1,1-trithiolate group μ3 coordinating the Zr ions, were observed in the case of Zr3. 1D and 2D NMR analyses confirmed the presence of differently coordinated ligands. Raman spectroscopy was further used to characterize the new polynuclear complexes. Time-resolved extended X-ray absorption fine structure measurements, devoted to unraveling the cluster formation mechanisms, evidenced a fast coordination of sulfur ligands and subsequent relatively rapid rearrangements.

Abstract
The dinuclear dimethylamido-tris(3,5-dimethylpyrazolato)-zirconium(IV) complex [Zr(3,5-Me2Pz)3(NMe2)]2 1 is prepared by treatment of [Zr(NMe2)4] with 3 equivalents of 3,5-dimethylpyrazole (3,5-Me2PzH) with elimination of dimethylamine. When [Zr(NMe2)4] reacted with 2 equivalents of 3,5-Me2PzH, the bis(dimethylamido)-bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazolato)zirconium(IV) compound [Zr(3,5-Me2Pz)2(NMe2)2]2 2 is obtained. Hydrolysis of [Zr(3,5-Me2Pz)3(NMe2)]2 in wet toluene affords the tetranuclear oxo compound [Zr4(eta2-3,5-Me2Pz)4(NMe2)2(mu3-O)2(mu2-3,5-Me2Pz)4(mu2-NMe2)2] . All synthesised compounds are characterised by NMR spectroscopic and analytical methods. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis has established the molecular structures of 1 and 4.

Abstract
A novel dinuclear zirconium sandwich-type silicotungstate cluster of [(gamma-SiW(10)O(36))(2)Zr(2)(mu-OH)(2)](10-) (1) was synthesized by the reaction of a divacant lacunary gamma-Keggin silicotungstate [gamma-SiW(10)O(36)](8-) with ZrOCl(2).8H(2)O. The anion consisted of two [gamma-SiW(10)O(36)](8-) units sandwiching a diamond Zr(2)(mu-OH)(2) core, and each zirconium atom in 1 was six-coordinated to two mu-OH ligands and four oxygen atoms of two [gamma-SiW(10)O(36)](8-) units. The Zr(2)(mu-OH)(2) core in 1 reacted with methanol to give the corresponding monomethoxo derivative [(gamma-SiW(10)O(36))(2)Zr(2)(mu-OH)(mu-OCH(3))](10-) (2).

Abstract
The lithium salt (L)Li(THF) (L- = bis(3,5-di-tertbutylpyrazol-1-yl)-1-CH2NAr, Ar = 2,6-iPr2C6H3) can be readily prepared from lithium bis(3,5-di-tertbutylpyrazol-1-yl)methide and the N-methyleneaniline H2C=NAr. This N,N,N'-heteroscorpionate lithium reagent can be transmetalated with Tl(OTf), FeCl2(THF)(1.5), and CoCl2 to yield the (L)Tl, (L)FeCl, and (L)CoCl complexes, respectively. Single crystal structural data for compounds (L)Li(THF), (L)Tl, (L)FeCl, and (L)CoCl reveal in each case the hapticity of the sterically demanding, monoanionic L- ligand to be kappa3-N3.

Abstract
Reaction of the dimeric zirconium imido compound [Zr2(mu-NAr)2Cl4(THF)4] with tris(3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl)methyl silane very selectively gave [Zr{(Me2pz)2Si(Me)NAr}Cl3] (1), a highly active pre-catalyst for ethylene polymerisation; a more general and versatile route to N3 donor heteroscorpionate compounds was achieved via the protio ligand (Me2pz)2CHSi(Me)2N(H)iPr for which neutral and cationic organometallic Group 3 and 4 derivatives are reported (Ar = 2,6-C6H(3)iPr2).

Abstract
Scorpionates represent one of the most versatile types of tridentate ligand that can coordinate to a wide variety of elements, e.g. from early to late transition metals, and the coordination chemistry of these systems has developed greatly in recent years. This Perspective gives an account of studies on the following aspects: (1) the preparative methods for a new class of heteroscorpionate [RR'C(pz)2] ligand derived from bis(pyrazol-1-yl)methane and (2) the description of metal complexes containing these ligands, examples of which incorporate a range of different metals from the Periodic Table.

Abstract
The reaction of [Ti(NR)Cl(2)(py)(3)](R = (t)Bu, p-tolyl, 2,6-C(6)H(3)(i)Pr(2)) with [{Li(bdmpza)(H(2)O)}(4)][bdmpza = bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)acetate] and [{Li(bdmpzdta)(H(2)O)}(4)][bdmpzdta = bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)dithioacetate] affords the corresponding complexes [Ti(NR)Cl(kappa(3)-bdmpzx)(py)](x = a, R = (t)Bu 1, p-tolyl 2, 2,6-C(6)H(3)(i)Pr(2) 3; x = dta, R =(t)Bu 4, p-tolyl , 2,6-C(6)H(3)(i)Pr(2) 6), which are the first examples of imido Group 4 complexes stabilized by heteroscorpionate ligands. The solid-state X-ray crystal structure of 1 has been determined. The titanium centre is six-coordinate with three fac-sites occupied by the heteroscorpionate ligand and the remainder of the coordination sphere being completed by chloride, imido and pyridine ligands. The complexes are 1-6 fluxional at room temperature. The pyridine ortho- and meta-proton resonances show evidence of dynamic behaviour for this ligand and variable-temperature NMR studies were carried out in order to study their dynamic behaviour in solution. The complexes [Nb(NR)Cl(3)(py)(2)](R = (t)Bu, p-tolyl, 2,6-C(6)H(3)(i)Pr(2)) reacted with [{Li(bdmpza)(H(2)O)}(4)] and (Hbdmpze)[bdmpze = 2,2-bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)ethoxide], the latter with prior addition of (n)BuLi, to give the complexes [Nb(NR)Cl(2)(kappa(3)-bdmpzx)](x = a, R =(t)Bu 7, p-tolyl 8, 2,6-C(6)H(3)(i)Pr(2) 9; x = e, R = (t)Bu 10, p-tolyl 11, 2,6-C(6)H(3)(i)Pr(2)) 12 and these are the first examples of imido Group 5 complexes with heteroscorpionate ligands. The structures of these complexes have been determined by spectroscopic methods.
