Metal-Induced Coordination Inversion and Carbon−Nitrogen Bond Rearrangement. Structurally Characterized Phenyl Isocyanate Inserted into Aluminum Methyl Compounds and O- and N-Bound Aluminum Compounds

A Highly Strained Al-Al σ-Bond in Dianionic Aluminum Analog of Oxirane for Molecule Activation

Since aluminum is the most electropositive element among the p-block elements, the construction of molecules bearing a dianionic Al-Al σ-bond is inherently highly challenging. Herein, we report the first synthesis of a dianionic dialane(6) 2 based on the Al₂O three-membered ring scaffold, namely, an aluminum analog of oxirane. The structure of 2 has been unambiguously ascertained by spectroscopic analysis as well as X-ray crystallography, and computational studies revealed that 2 bears a highly strained Al-Al σ-bond. 2 readily reacts with the unsaturated substrates such as isocyanide, ethylene, and ketone, concomitant with the cleavage of the Al-Al σ-bond under mild conditions, leading to the four- and five-membered heterocycles 3-5. Furthermore, the reaction of 2 with two molecules of benzonitrile (PhCN) furnishes a seven-membered heterocycle 6, resulting from the C-C coupling reaction of PhCN. We further delineate that 2 selectively activates an arene ring C-C bond of biphenylene, rendering a di-Al-substituted benzo[8]annulene derivative 7. Preliminary computational studies propose that the stepwise reaction mechanism involves the Al-Al σ-bond cleavage, dearomative Al-C bond formation, subsequent sigmatropic [1,3]shifts, and a pericyclic reaction.

Potassium complexes containing bidentate pyrrole ligands: synthesis, structures, and catalytic activity for the cyclotrimerization of isocyanates

Bidentate pyrrolyl ligands, 2-(t-butyliminomethyl)pyrrole and 2-(t-butylaminomethyl)pyrrole, reacted with KH to give complexes [C₄H₃N(2-CH[double bond, length as m-dash]N^tBu)K(THF)]_n (1) and [C₄H₃N(2-CH₂NH^tBu)K]_n (2), respectively. Each has been characterized by C, H and N microanalysis, NMR spectroscopy, and single crystal X-ray structural analysis. The X-ray structure of complex 1 (n≥ 1) demonstrated that it exists as a 1D zig-zag coordination polymer in the solid state. Conversely, the structure of complex 2 (n≥ 1) showed that it is a 2D supramolecular network. They proved to be an effective class of catalysts for cyclotrimerization of isocyanate in excellent yield under mild conditions.

Aluminum complexes incorporating symmetrical and asymmetrical tridentate pincer type pyrrolyl ligands: synthesis, characterization and reactivity study

A series of aluminum complexes incorporating substituted symmetrical and asymmetrical tridentate pyrrolyl ligands are synthesized conveniently and the treatment of the derivatives with small organic molecules are analyzed. The reaction of lithiated [C4H2NH(2-CH2NH(t)Bu)(5-CH2NR1R2)], where for 1, R1 = R2 = Me; 2, R1 = H, R2 = (t)Bu, with AlCl3 in diethyl ether affords Al[C4H2N(2-CH2NH(t)Bu)(5-CH2NMe2)]Cl2 (3) and Al[C4H2N(2,5-CH2NH(t)Bu)2]Cl2 (4), respectively, in high yields. Furthermore, subjecting 3 and 4 to reaction with one equiv. of LiNMePh in diethyl ether generates Al[C4H2N(2-CH2NH(t)Bu)(5-CH2NMe2)][NMePh]Cl (5) and Al[C4H2N(2,5-CH2NH(t)Bu)2][NMePh]Cl (6), respectively, while eliminating one equiv. of LiCl. The reaction between compound 4 with two equiv. of LiO-Ph-4-Me in diethyl ether yields the aluminum di-phenoxide compound Al[C4H2N(2,5-CH2NH(t)Bu)2](O-Ph-4-Me)2 (7) whereas the combination of 3 and two equiv. of LiNH(t)Bu, produces Al[C4H2N(2-CH2N(t)Bu)(5-CH2NMe2)](NH(t)Bu)(NH2(t)Bu) (8). Additionally, the mixing of 1 and one equiv. of AlMe3 renders Al[C4H2N(2-CH2NH(t)Bu)(5-CH2NMe2)]Me2 (9). Adding one more equiv. of AlMe3 with 9 affords {Al[C4H2N(2-CH2NH(t)Bu)(5-CH2NMe2)AlMe3]Me2} (10), which can also be obtained by treating 1 with two equiv. of AlMe3 directly. The treatment of 9 with one equiv. of 2,6-dimethylphenol in diethyl ether gives the aluminum alkoxide derivative, Al[C4H2N(2-CH2NH(t)Bu)(5-CH2NMe2)](O-C6H3-2,6-Me2)Me (11). Furthermore, the reaction between 9 and one equiv. of 1-ethyl-1-phenyl ketene, initiates the aluminum dimethyl complex Al{C4H2N[2-CH2CEtPh-C(=O)-NH(t)Bu](5-CH2NMe2)}Me2 (12) with a C-N bond breakage and a C-C bond formation. All the Al-derivatives are characterized by (1)H and (13)C NMR spectroscopy and the molecular structures are determined by single crystal X-ray diffractometry in solid state.

Ring-opening polymerization by lithium catalysts: an overview

This critical review summarizes recent developments in the preparation and application of lithium catalysts/initiators such as, alkyl lithium, alkoxy lithium and bimetallic lithium compounds for ring-opening polymerization (ROP). The ROP of cyclic esters, cyclic carbonates, cyclo-silazanes, cyclo-silanes, cyclo-siloxanes, cyclo-carboxylate, cyclic phosphirene and quinodimethanes are covered in this review. The present paper emphasizes the polymerization kinetics and the control exhibited by the different types of lithium initiators/catalysts. For the cases where useful properties, such as high molecular weight, narrow PDI, or stereocontrol, have been observed, a more detailed examination of the mechanistic studies of the catalysts/initiators are provided. Furthermore, this review also focuses on the synthesis of block copolymers and graft copolymers by ROP principle. The topics covered in this review regarding lithium compounds toward ROP will be of interest to inorganic, organic and organometallic chemists, material, polymer and catalytic scientists due to its unique mode of activation as compared to transition and inner transition-metals. In addition, use of these compounds in catalysis is steadily growing, because of the complementary reactivity toward ROP as compared to other metals. Finally, some aspects and opportunities which may be of interest in the future are suggested (143 references).

Insertion, Reduction, and Carbon–Carbon Coupling Induced by Monomeric Aluminum Hydride Compounds Bearing Substituted Pyrrolyl Ligands

A monomeric aluminum hydride complex bearing substituted pyrrolyl ligands, AlH[C(4)H(3)N(CH(2)NMe(2))-2](2) (1), was synthesized and structurally characterized. To further confirm the presence of Al--H bonds, the compound AlD[C(4)H(3)N(CH(2)NMe(2))-2](2) ([D]1) was synthesized by reacting LiAlD(4) with [C(4)H(4)N(CH(2)NMe(2))-2]. Compound 1 and [D]1 react with phenyl isothiocyanate yielding Al[C(4)H(3)N(CH(2)NMe(2))-2](2)[eta(3)-SCHNPh] (2) and Al[C(4)H(3)N(CH(2)NMe(2))-2](2)[eta(3)-SCDNPh] ([D]2) by insertion. The reactions of 1 with 9-fluorenone and benzophenone generated the unusual aluminum alkoxide complexes 3 and 4, respectively, through intramolecular proton abstraction and C-C coupling. A mechanistic study shows that 9-fluorenone coordinates to [D]1 and releases one equivalent of HD followed by C-C coupling and hydride transfer to yield the final product. Reduction of benzil with 1 affords aluminum enediolate complex 5 in moderate yield. Mechanistic studies also showed that the benzil was inserted into the aluminum hydride bond of [D]1 through hydroalumination followed by proton transfer to generate the final product [D]5. All new complexes have been characterized by (1)H and (13)C NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography.
