Base-Induced Dismutation of POCl3 and POBr3: Synthesis and Structure of Ligand-Stabilized Dioxophosphonium Cations

Stabilized Molecular Diphosphorus Pentoxide, P2O5L2 (L = N-Donor Base), in the Synthesis of Condensed Phosphate-Organic Molecule Conjugates

Commercial phosphorus pentoxide reacts with some N-donor bases to give the adducts P₂O₅L₂ and P₄O₁₀L₃ (L = DABCO, pyridine, 4-tert-butylpyridine). The DABCO adducts were structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. It is proposed that P₂O₅L₂ and P₄O₁₀L₃ undergo interconversion through a "phosphate-walk" mechanism, which was evaluated using DFT calculations. P₂O₅(pyridine)₂ (1) efficiently transfers monomeric diphosphorus pentoxide to phosphorus oxyanion nucleophiles, yielding substituted trimetaphosphates and cyclo-phosphonate-diphosphates (P₃O₈R)^2- (R¹ = nucleosidyl, phosphoryl, alkyl, aryl, vinyl, alkynyl, H, F). Hydrolytic ring-opening of these compounds forms linear derivatives [R¹(PO₃)₂PO₃H]^3-, and nucleophilic ring-opening gives linear disubstituted [R¹(PO₃)₂PO₂R²]^3- compounds.

Carbodiphosphorane-Stabilized Parent Dioxophosphorane: A Valuable Synthetic HO2P Source

Introducing a small phosphorus-based fragment into other molecular entities via, for example, phosphorylation/phosphonylation is an important process in synthetic chemistry. One of the approaches to achieve this is by trapping and subsequently releasing extremely reactive phosphorus-based molecules such as dioxophosphoranes. In this work, electron-rich hexaphenylcarbodiphosphorane (CDP) was used to stabilize the least thermodynamically favorable isomer of HO₂P to yield monomeric CDP·PHO₂. The title compound was observed to be a quite versatile phosphonylating agent; that is, it showed a great ability to transfer, for the first time, the HPO₂ fragment to a number of substrates such as alcohols, amines, carboxylic acids, and water. Several phosphorous-based compounds that were generated using this synthetic approach were also isolated and characterized for the first time. According to the initial computational studies, the addition-elimination pathway was significantly more favorable than the corresponding elimination-addition route for "delivering" the HO₂P unit in these reactions.

Direct conversion of white phosphorus to versatile phosphorus transfer reagents via oxidative onioation

The main feedstock for the value-added phosphorus chemicals used in industry and research is white phosphorus (P₄), from which the key intermediate for forming P(III) compounds is PCl₃. Owing to its high reactivity, syntheses based on PCl₃ are often accompanied by product mixtures and laborious work-up procedures, so an alternative process to form a viable P(III) transfer reagent is desirable. Our concept of oxidative onioation, where white phosphorus is selectively converted into triflate salts of versatile P₁ transfer reagents such as [P(L_N)₃][OTf]₃ (L_N is a cationic, N-based substituent; that is, 4-dimethylaminopyridinio), provides a convenient alternative for the implementation of P-O, P-N and P-C bonds while circumventing the use of PCl₃. We use p-block element compounds of type R_nE (for example, Ph₃As or PhI) to access weak adducts between nitrogen Lewis bases L_N and the corresponding dications [R_nEL_N]²⁺. The proposed equilibrium between [R_nEL_N]²⁺ + L_N and [R_nE(L_N)₂]²⁺ allows for the complete oxidative onioation of all six P-P bonds in P₄ to yield highly reactive and versatile trications [P(L_N)₃]³⁺.

The Metaphosphite (PO2 - ) Anion as a Ligand

The utilization of monomeric, lower phosphorous oxides and oxoanions, such as metaphosphite (PO2 - ), which is the heavier homologue of the common nitrite anion but previously only observed in the gas phase and by matrix isolation, requires new synthetic strategies. Herein, a series of rhenium(I-III) complexes with PO2 - as ligand is reported. Synthetic access was enabled by selective oxygenation of a terminal phosphide complex. Spectroscopic and computational examination revealed slightly stronger σ-donor and comparable π-acceptor properties of PO2 - compared to homologous NO2 - , which is one of the archetypal ligands in coordination chemistry.

Base-Stabilized [PO]+ /[PO2 ]+ Cations

The salts [(BAC)₂ PO][BF₄ ] (5) and [(BAC)₂ PO₂ ][BF₄ ] (4) (BAC=bis(diisopropylamino) cyclopropenylidene), consisting of the PO⁺ and PO₂ ⁺ cations, respectively, coordinated to the singlet carbenes, have been prepared. Computational investigations reveal that the electronic structure of the PO⁺ cation is a hybrid between the charge-localized and charge-delocalized resonance forms, resulting in ambiphilic reactivity. Compound 5 reacts as a donor with the transition-metal complex K₂ PtCl₄ to furnish [[(BAC)₂ PO]₂ PtCl₂ ][BF₄ ]₂ (6) and KCl. Remarkably, both 5 and 4 have shown to act as electrophiles undergoing reactions with fluoride anion, leading to [OPF₂ ]^- and (BAC)PO₂ F, respectively.

Tetra-cationic imidazoliumyl-substituted phosphorus–sulfur heterocycles from a cationic organophosphorus sulfide

The formation of novel tetracationic cyclo-P₄S₄ derivatives [LPS]₄⁴⁺via oligomerization of [LPS]⁺ is presented. Subsequent deoligomerization- and dismutation reactions induced by 4-dimethylaminopyridine are discussed herein.

Coordination Complexes of the Dimethylthiophosphonium Cation and Ligand Exchange

The quantitative exchange of a 4-(dimethylamino)pyridine ligand on the dimethyl-thio-phosphonium cation by Me3P demonstrates the coordinative nature of the N-P and P-P bond and diversifies a fundamentally important new direction in the coordination chemistry of phosphorus as an acceptor.

Electron affinities of heavier phosphoryl and thiophosphoryl halides APX3 (A = O, S and X = Br, I)

We carried out computational studies of OPX3 and SPX3 (X = Br and I) molecules and their corresponding anions using density functional theory, Møller-Plesset, and CCSD(T) methods with newly developed model core potentials (MCP). Reliabilities of the MCP were demonstrated by comparing experimental and calculated results. We computed the geometric structure, electron affinities, and electrostatic moments using systematic sequences of the dzp-, tzp-, and qzp-quality basis sets. Both C3v and Cs symmetries were assumed to ascertain that minima on the potential energy surface were found. Infrared and Raman frequencies were calculated and compared with available experimental data. Natural population analyses were performed and used to determine distribution of the extra electron in anions.

The nature of the chemical bond in linear three-body systems: from i3- to mixed chalcogen/halogen and trichalcogen moieties

The 3 centre-4 electrons (3c-4e) and the donor/acceptor or charge-transfer models for the description of the chemical bond in linear three-body systems, such as I(3) (-) and related electron-rich (22 shell electrons) systems, are comparatively discussed on the grounds of structural data from a search of the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD). Both models account for a total bond order of 1 in these systems, and while the former fits better symmetric systems, the latter describes better strongly asymmetric situations. The 3c-4e MO scheme shows that any linear system formed by three aligned closed-shell species (24 shell electrons overall) has reason to exist provided that two electrons are removed from it to afford a 22 shell electrons three-body system: all combinations of three closed-shell halides and/or chalcogenides are considered here. A survey of the literature shows that most of these three-body systems exist. With some exceptions, their structural features vary continuously from the symmetric situation showing two equal bonds to very asymmetric situations in which one bond approaches to the value corresponding to a single bond and the second one to the sum of the van der Waals radii of the involved atoms. This indicates that the potential energy surface of these three-body systems is fairly flat, and that the chemical surrounding of the chalcogen/halogen atoms can play an important role in freezing different structural situations; this is well documented for the I(3) (-) anion. The existence of correlations between the two bond distances and more importantly the linearity observed for all these systems, independently on the degree of their asymmetry, support the state of hypervalency of the central atom.
