Abstract
For decades, ligands such as phosphanes or cyclopentadienyl ring derivatives have dominated Coordination and Organometallic Chemistry. At the same time, alternative compounds have emerged that could compete either for a more practical and accessible synthesis or for greater control of steric and electronic properties. Guanidines, nitrogen-rich compounds, appear as one such potential alternatives as ligands or proligands. In addition to occurring in a plethora of natural compounds, and thus in compounds of pharmacological use, guanidines allow a wide variety of coordination modes to different metal centers along the periodic table, with their monoanionic chelate derivatives being the most common. In this review, we focused on the organometallic chemistry of guanidinato compounds, discussing selected examples of coordination modes, reactivity and uses in catalysis or materials science. We believe that these amazing ligands offer a new promise in Organometallic Chemistry.

Abstract
![]()
Complexes featuring lanthanide (Ln)–Si
bonds represent a highly neglected research area. Herein, we report
a series of open-shell LnII+ and LnIII+ complexes
bearing σ-bonded silyl and base-stabilized N-heterocyclic silylene
(NHSi) ligands. The reactions of the LnIII+ complexes Cp3Ln (Ln = Tm, Ho, Tb, Gd; Cp = cyclopentadienide) with the
18-crown-6 (18-cr-6)-stabilized 1,4-oligosilanyl dianion [(18-cr-6)KSi(SiMe3)2SiMe2SiMe2Si(SiMe3)2K(18-cr-6)] (1) selectively afford the
corresponding metallacyclopentasilane salts [Cp2Ln({Si(SiMe3)2SiMe2}2)]−[K2(18-cr-6)2Cp]+ [Ln = Tm (2a), Ho (2b), Tb (2c), Gd (2d)]. Complexes 2a–2d represent
the first examples of structurally characterized Tm, Ho, Tb, and Gd
complexes featuring Ln–Si bonds. Strikingly, the analogous
reaction of 1 with the lighter element analogue Cp3Ce affords the acyclic product [Cp3CeSi(SiMe3)2SiMe2SiMe2Si(SiMe3)2-Cp3Ce]2–2[K(18-cr-6)]+ (3) as the first example of a complex featuring
a Ce–Si bond. In an alternative synthetic approach, the aryloxy-functionalized
benzamidinato NHSi ligand Si(OC6H4-2-tBu){(NtBu)2CPh} (4a) and the alkoxy analogue Si(OtBu){(NtBu)2CPh} (4b) were reacted with Cp*2Sm(OEt2), affording, by OEt2 elimination, the
corresponding silylene complexes, both featuring SmII+ centers:
Cp*2Sm ← :Si(O–C6H4-2-tBu){(NtBu)2CPh}
(6) and Cp*2Sm ← :Si(OtBu){(NtBu)2CPh} (5). Complexes 5 and 6 are the first four-coordinate silylene
complexes of any f-block element to date. All complexes were fully
characterized by spectroscopic means and by single-crystal X-ray diffraction
analysis. In the series 2a–2d, a
linear correlation was observed between the Ln–Si bond lengths
and the covalent radii of the corresponding Ln metals. Moreover, in
complexes 5 and 6, notably long Sm–Si
bonds are observed, in accordance with a donor–acceptor interaction
between Si and Sm [5, 3.4396(15) Å; 6, 3.3142(18) Å]. Density functional theory calculations were
carried out for complexes 2a–2d, 5, and 6 to elucidate the bonding situation between
the LnII+ or LnIII+ centers and Si. In particular,
a decrease in the Mayer bond order (MBO) of the Ln–Si bond
is observed in the series 2a–2d in
moving from the lighter to the heavier lanthanides (Tm = 0.53, Ho
= 0.62, Tb = 0.65, and Gd = 0.75), which might indicate decreasing
covalency in the Ln–Si bond. In accordance with the long bond
lengths observed experimentally in complexes 5 and 6, comparatively low MBOs were determined for both silylene
complexes (5, 0.24; 6, 0.25) . A series of open-shell LnII+ and LnIII+ complexes
bearing σ-bonded silyl and base-stabilized N-heterocyclic silylene
(NHSi) ligands are reported. By reactions of Cp3Ln (Ln
= Tm, Ho, Tb, Gd) with a 1,4-oligosilanyl dianion, the metallacyclopentasilane
salts [Cp2Ln({Si(SiMe3)2SiMe2}2)]−[K2(18-cr-6)2Cp]+ were obtained. Alternatively, two NHSi ligands
were reacted with Cp*2Sm(OEt2), affording the
corresponding silylene complexes, both featuring SmII+ centers.
Density functional theory calculations were conducted for all complexes
to study the bonding situation.

Abstract
A series of neutral and anionic bis(phenolate) lanthanide amides were synthesized by general metathesis reactions, and their reactivity was explored. Protolytic ligand exchange reactions of MBMPH2 (MBMP = 2,2'-methylene bis(6-tert-butyl-4-methyl-phenolate)) with [Ln{N(TMS)2}2(mu-Cl)(THF)]2 (TMS = SiMe3) afforded the desired bridged bis(phenolate) lanthanide chlorides [(MBMP)Ln(mu-Cl)(THF)2]2 [Ln = Nd (1), Yb (2)] in high isolated yields. These lanthanide chlorides were found to be useful precursors for the synthesis of the corresponding lanthanide derivatives. Reactions of 1 and 2 with 2 equiv of NaN(TMS)2 in THF produced the expected neutral bis(phenolate) lanthanide amido complexes (MBMP)Ln[N(TMS)2](THF)2 [Ln = Nd (3), Yb (4)] in high yields. Whereas the reactions of 1 and 2 with LiN(TMS)2 in a 1:4 molar ratio gave the anionic bis(phenolate) lanthanide amides as discrete ion-pair complexes [Li(THF)4][(MBMP)Ln{N(TMS)2}2] [Ln = Nd (5), Yb (6)] in high isolated yields. Further study revealed that 5 and 6 can also be conveniently synthesized in high yields by the direct reactions of MBMPH2 with [Ln{N(TMS)2}2(mu-Cl)(THF)]2 in a 2:1 molar ratio, and then with 4 equiv of nBuLi. The reactivity of the neutral and anionic bis(phenolate) lanthanide amides was comparatively investigated. It was found that the insertion reactions of carbodiimide into the Ln-N bond of neutral lanthanide amido complexes 3 and 4 gave the anticipated bis(phenolate) lanthanide guanidinate complexes [(mu-O-MBMP)Nd{(iPrN)2CN(TMS)2}]2 (7) and (MBMP)Yb[(iPrN)2CN(TMS)2] (8), respectively, in high yields, whereas the similar reaction of carbodiimide with anionic amido complex 5 provided the unexpected ligand-redistributed products, and the homoleptic ion-pair bis(phenolate) neodymium complex [Li(DME)2(THF)][(MBMP)2Nd(THF)2] (9) was finally isolated as one of the products. Furthermore, the anionic bis(phenolate) lanthanide amides showed higher catalytic activity for the polymerization of epsilon-caprolactone than the neutral ones. All of the complexes were characterized with elemental analysis and IR spectra, and the definitive molecular structures of 1-3 and 5-9 were provided by single-crystal X-ray analyses.

Abstract
The dinuclear ytterbium pyridyl diamido complexes [Cp(2)Yb(THF)](2)[mu-eta(1):eta(2)-(NH)(2)(C(5)H(3)N-2,6)] (1a) and [Cp(2)Yb(THF)](2)[mu-eta(1):eta(2)-(NH)(2)(C(5)H(3)N-2,3)] (1b) are easily prepared by protonolysis of Cp(3)Yb with 0.5 equiv of the corresponding diaminopyridine in accepted yields, respectively. Treatment of 1a with 2 equiv of dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (CyN=C=NCy) in THF at low temperature leads to the isolation of the formal double N-H addition product (Cp(2)Yb)(2)[mu-eta(2):eta(2)-(CyN(CyNH)CN)(2)(C(5)H(3)N-2,6)] (2) in 42% yield. Compound 2 is unstable to heat and slowly isomerized to the mixed neutral/dianionic diguanidinate complex (Cp(2)Yb)(2)[mu-eta(2):eta(2)-(CyNH)(2)CN(C(5)H(3)N-2,6)NC(NCy)(2)](THF) (3) at room temperature. Similarly, treatment of 1b with 2 equiv of CyN=C=NCy gives the addition/ isomerization product (Cp(2)Yb)(2)[mu-eta(2):eta(2):eta(1)-(CyNH)(2)CN(C(5)H(3)N-2,3)NC(NCy)(2)] (4). Moreover, the reaction of various ytterbium aryl diamido complexes (prepared in situ from [Cp(2)YbMe](2) and aryldiamine, respectively) with CyN=C=NCy affords the corresponding addition products (Cp(2)Yb)(2)[mu-eta(2):eta(2)-{CyN(CyNH)CN}(2)(C(6)H(4)-1,4)] (5), (Cp(2)Yb)(2)[mu-eta(2):eta(2)-{CyN(CyNH)CN}(2)(C(6)H(4)-1,3)](6), and (Cp(2)Yb)(2)[mu-eta(2):eta(2)-{CyN(CyNH)CN}(2)(C(13)H(8)-2,7)] (7), respectively. In contrast to pyridyl-bridged bis(guanidinate monoanion) complexes, aryl-bridged bis(guanidinate monoanion) complexes 5-7 are stable even with prolonged heating at 110 degrees C. All the results not only demonstrate that the presence of the pyridyl bridge can impart the diamido complexes with a unique reactivity and initiate the unexpected reaction sequence but also indicate evidently that the number and distribution of negative charges of the diguanidinate ligand is tunable from double monoanionic units to mixed neutral/dianionic isomers. All the complexes are characterized by elemental analysis and IR spectroscopies. The structures of complexes 1a, 3, 5, 6, and 7 are also determined through X-ray single-crystal diffraction analysis.

Abstract
Reaction of [Ln(CH(2)SiMe(3))(3)(thf)(2)] (Ln=Y, Yb, and Lu) with one equivalent of Me(2)Si(C(5)Me(4)H)NHR' (R'=Ph, 2,4,6-Me(3)C(6)H(2), tBu) affords straightforwardly the corresponding half-sandwich rare-earth metal alkyl complexes [{Me(2)Si(C(5)Me(4))(NR')}Ln(CH(2)SiMe(3))(thf)(n)] (1: Ln = Y, R' = Ph, n=2; 2: Ln = Y, R' = C(6)H(2)Me(3)-2,4,6, n=1; 3: Ln = Y, R' = tBu, n=1; 4: Ln = Yb, R' = Ph, n=2; 5: Ln = Lu, R' = Ph, n=2) in high yields. These complexes, especially the yttrium complexes 1-3, serve as excellent catalyst precursors for the catalytic addition of various primary and secondary amines to carbodiimides, efficiently yielding a series of guanidine derivatives with a wide range of substituents on the nitrogen atoms. Functional groups such as C[triple chemical bond]N, C[triple chemical bond]CH, and aromatic C--X (X: F, Cl, Br, I) bonds can survive the catalytic reaction conditions. A primary amino group can be distinguished from a secondary one by the catalyst system, and therefore, the reaction of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-5-aminoisoquinoline with iPrN==C==NiPr can be achieved stepwise first at the primary amino group to selectively give the monoguanidine 38, and then at the cyclic secondary amino unit to give the biguanidine 39. Some key reaction intermediates or true catalyst species, such as the amido complexes [{Me(2)Si(C(5)Me(4))(NPh)}Y(NEt(2))(thf)(2)] (40) and [{Me(2)Si(C(5)Me(4))(NPh)}Y(NHC(6)H(4)Br-4)(thf)(2)] (42), and the guanidinate complexes [{Me(2)Si(C(5)Me(4))(NPh)}Y{iPrNC(NEt(2))(NiPr)}(thf)] (41) and [{Me(2)Si(C(5)Me(4))(NPh)}Y{iPrN}C(NC(6)H(4)Br-4)(NHiPr)}(thf)] (44) have been isolated and structurally characterized. Reactivity studies on these complexes suggest that the present catalytic formation of a guanidine compound proceeds mechanistically through nucleophilic addition of an amido species, formed by acid-base reaction between a rare-earth metal alkyl bond and an amine N--H bond, to a carbodiimide, followed by amine protonolysis of the resultant guanidinate species.

Abstract
The reactivity of lanthanocene derivatives containing the p-aminothiophenolate ligand towards carbodiimide was examined. Reaction of Cp2Ln(p-SC6H4NH2)(THF) with RN=C=NR in THF at room temperature gave four novel organolanthanide guanidinate complexes [Cp2Ln(p-SC6H4N(H)C(NHR)=NR)]4 (R = iPr, Ln = Yb (1a), Er (2a); R = Cy, Ln = Yb (2a), Er (2b)), formed by the addition of the C[double bond, length as m-dash]N double bonds of the carbodiimide molecule to the para-position amino group. Their unique square-planar macrocycle structures have been determined through X-ray single-crystal diffraction analysis. This result provides a potential method for the construction of organolanthanide macrocycles.

Abstract
Four novel tri- or tetranuclear organolanthanide metallomacrocycles [Cp2Ln(mu-Im)(THF)3 (Cp = C5H5, Ln = Yb (1), Er (2)], [Cp2Dy(mu-Im)]4(THF)]3 x 2THF (3), and [Cp'2Yb(mu-eta1:eta2-Tz)]4 x 2THF (Cp' = CH3C5H4) (4) have been synthesized through protolysis of Cp3Ln or Cp'3Yb with imidazole or triazole, indicating that both the bridge-ligand size and the lanthanide-ion radii can be applied in the modulation of the metallomacrocycles. Further investigations on the reactivity of complexes 1, 3, and 4 toward phenyl isocyanate reveal that PhNCO inserts readily into the simple bridge Ln-N bonds of 1 and 3 to yield the corresponding insertion products [Cp2Ln(mu-eta1:eta2-OC(Im)NPh)]3 (Ln = Yb (5), Dy (6)) but cannot insert into the Ln-N bond with a mu-eta1:eta2-bonding mode in 4. The novel bridge ligand [OC(Im)NPh] can expand the numbers of the ring members from 12 to 18 in 5 or 16 to 18 in 6. The number of metal atoms in the metallacycles with the ligand [OC(Im)NPh] is independent of the lanthanide-ion size; both trinuclear lanthanide macrocycles are observed in 5 and 6. All of these new complexes have been characterized by elemental analysis and spectroscopic properties, and their structures have also been determined through X-ray single-crystal diffraction analysis.

Abstract
(C5H5)2Ln[OC(PzMe2)=NPh](THF) (Ln = Dy (1a), Er (1b), Yb (1c), Y (1d)) were prepared in good yields by the PhNCO insertion into the Ln-N bond of (C(5)H(5))(2)Ln(PzMe(2))(THF) (PzMe(2) = 3,5-dimethylpyrazolate) in THF at room temperature. Treatment of with p-aminothiophenol in THF at room temperature gives unusual ligand-based substitution derivatives {(C5H5)2Ln[mu-eta1:eta3-OC(p-H2NC6H4S)NPh]}2.2THF (Ln = Dy (2a), Er (2b), Yb (2c), Y (2d)), while reaction of 1c with o-aminothiophenol instead of p-aminothiophenol allows the occurrence of a tandem substitution/cyclization/elimination to form unexpected benzothiazole-2-oxide complex [(C5H5)2Yb(mu-eta1:eta3-OSNC7H4)]2 (3c), representing a novel modification method for non-cyclopentadienyl ligands of lanthanocene derivatives. However, complex does not react with benzyl thiol, indicating that the nature of thiols has a profound influence on the substitution reaction. All complexes were characterized by elemental analysis and spectroscopic properties. The X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that and are solvated monomeric structures, while and are centrosymmetric dimeric ones with an unusual intermolecular hydrogen bond interaction involving THF.
