Formation of Mono(dithiolene)−Thiocarboxamido Complexes in Reactions of Thio(dithiocarbamato)−Mo/W Complexes and Dimethyl Acetylenedicarboxylate

Comparative studies on the contribution of NHS hydrogen bonds in tungsten and molybdenum benzenedithiolate complexes

A series of monooxotungsten(iv) and dioxotungsten(vi) benzenedithiolates, (NEt₄)₂[W^IVO(1,2-S₂-3-RCONHC₆H₃)₂] (1-W; R = CH₃ (a), t-Bu (b), or CF₃ (c)) and (NEt₄)₂[W^VIO₂(1,2-S₂-3-RCONHC₆H₃)₂] (2-W), were synthesized and compared with the corresponding molybdenum analogues. Single crystals of trans-1b-W were successfully obtained, and the crystal structure was determined by X-ray analysis although 1b-Mo could not be crystallized. The NHS hydrogen bonds shifted the potential of the W(iv/v) redox couple to more positive values, and the strength of the hydrogen bond and the positive shift value were strongly correlated. The hydrogen bonds in both 1-W and 2-W were weaker than those in the corresponding molybdenum analogues; however, the effect of the hydrogen bonds on the redox potential was greater in 1-W.

Significant differences of monooxotungsten(IV) and dioxotungsten(VI) benzenedithiolates containing two intramolecular NHS hydrogen bonds from molybdenum analogues

A monooxotungsten(iv) benzenedithiolate complex containing two intramolecular NHS hydrogen bonds, (NEt4)2[W(IV)O(1,2-S2-3-t-BuNHCOC6H3)2] (1-W), was synthesized via a ligand-exchange reaction between a new starting complex, (NEt4)2[W(IV)O(SC6F5)4], and a partially deprotonated dithiol. When dithiol was used in solution, the oxo ligand was protonated and removed to afford (NEt4)2[W(IV)(1,2-S2-3-t-BuNHCOC6H3)3]. The trans isomer, trans-1-W, was crystallized, and the molecular structure was determined via X-ray analysis. Trans-1-W was gradually isomerized by heating it in solution and it eventually achieved an approximately 1 : 1 mixture of trans/cis isomers after 48 days. However, a slightly excess amount of trans isomer remained, so the isomerization rate was considerably slower than that of the molybdenum analogue. In the presence of NEt4BH4, deuteration of the NH protons was observed in acetonitrile-d3. The oxidation of both trans- and cis-1-W by Me3NO afforded the corresponding dioxotungsten(vi) complex, (NEt4)2[W(VI)O2(1,2-S2-3-t-BuNHCOC6H3)2] (2-W), as a single isomer. The contributions of the NHS hydrogen bonds to the bond distances, vibrational data, and electrochemical properties are described via comparisons with their molybdenum analogues. The results of this comparative study yielded insights into both tungsten and molybdenum enzymes.

Bis(carbonyl-κC)(N,N-dimethyl-thio-carbamoyl-κC,S)(pyridine-2-thiol-ato-κN,S)(triphenyl-phosphine-κP)molybdenum(II)

There are two independent mol­ecules with similar configurations in the title complex, [Mo(C₃H₆NS)(C₅H₄NS)(C₁₈H₁₅P)(CO)₂]. The geometry around the metal atom is that of a capped octa­hedron. The thio­cabamoyl and pyridine-2-thiol­ate ligands coordinate to the molybdenum metal center through the C and S atoms, and N and S atoms, respectively. NMR, IR and MS analyses are in agreement with the structure of the title compound.

Facets of early transition metal–sulfur chemistry: Metal–sulfur ligand redox, induced internal electron transfer, and the reactions of metal–sulfur complexes with alkynes

Metal-sulfur ligand redox interplay, induced internal electron transfer reactions, and the generation of dithiolene and organosulfur ligands in the reactions of metal-sulfur compounds with alkynes are important and useful facets of early transition metal-sulfur chemistry. This review focuses on developments in these areas over the past 30 years.

Synthesis, characterization, and spectroscopy of model molybdopterin complexes

The preparation and characterization of new model complexes for the molybdenum cofactor are reported. The new models are distinctive for the inclusion of pterin-substituted dithiolene chelates and have the formulation Tp(*)MoX(pterin-R-dithiolene) (Tp(*)=tris(3,5,-dimethylpyrazolyl)borate), X=O, S, R=aryl. Syntheses of Mo(4+) and (5+) complexes of two pterin-dithiolene derivatives as both oxo and sulfido compounds, and improved syntheses for pterinyl alkynes and [Et(4)N][Tp(*)Mo(IV)(S)S(4)] reagents are described. Characterization methods include electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, electrochemistry, infrared spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance and magnetic circular dichroism. Cyclic voltammetry reveals that the Mo(5+/4+) reduction potential is intermediate between that for dithiolenes with electron-withdrawing substituents and simple dithiolates chelates. Electron paramagnetic resonance and magnetic circular dichroism of Mo(5+) complexes where X=O, R=aryl indicates that the molybdenum environment in the new models is electronically similar to that in Tp(*)MoO(benzenedithiolate).

O-atom-transfer oxidation of [molybdenum(IV) oxo{3,6-(acylamino)2- 1,2-benzenedithiolato}2]2- promoted by intramolecular NH...S hydrogen bonds

Novel molybdenum dithiolene compounds having neighboring amide groups as models for molybdoenzymes, (NEt(4))(2)[Mo(IV)O{1,2-S(2)-3,6-(RCONH)(2)C(6)H(2)}(2)] (R = CH(3), CF(3), t-Bu, Ph(3)C), were designed and synthesized. The contributions of the NH...S hydrogen bond to the electrochemical properties of the metal ion and the reactivity of the O-atom-transfer reaction were investigated by a comparison with [Mo(IV)O(1,2-S(2)C(6)H(4))(2)](2)(-). The MoOS(4) core of [Mo(IV)O{1,2-S(2)-3,6-(CH(3)CONH)(2)C(6)H(2)}(2)](2)(-) shows no significant geometrical difference from that of [Mo(IV)O(1,2-S(2)C(6)H(4))(2)](2)(-) in the crystal. The hydrogen bonds positively shifted the Mo(IV/V) redox potential and accelerated the reduction of Me(3)NO.

Synthesis and characterisation of second-generation metallodithiolene complexes of the type [Tp*ME(dithiolene)](M = Mo, W; E = O, S) and a novel ‘organoscorpionate’ complex of tungsten

Paramagnetic, chalcogenido-M(v) dithiolene complexes, [Tp*ME{S2C2(CO2Me)2}][M=Mo, E=O, S; M=W, E=O, S; Tp*=hydrotris(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)borate] are generated in the reactions of dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate (DMAC) and the sulfur-rich complexes NEt4[Tp*MoS(S4)] and NEt4[Tp*WS3]; the oxo complexes result from hydrolysis of the initial sulfido products. As well, a novel 'organoscorpionate' complex, [W{S2C2(CO2Me)2}{SC2(CO2Me)2-Tp*}], has been isolated from the reactions of NEt4[Tp*WS3] with excess DMAC. Complexes , and have been isolated and characterised by microanalytical, mass spectrometric, spectroscopic and (for and) X-ray crystallographic techniques. Complexes and have been partially characterised by mass spectrometry and IR and EPR spectroscopy. Six-coordinate, distorted-octahedral contains a terminal sulfido ligand (W=S=2.108(3)A), a bidentate dithiolene ligand (S-Cav=1.758 A, C=C=1.332(10)A) and a fac-tridentate Tp* ligand. Seven-coordinate contains a planar, bidentate dithiolene ligand (S-Cav=1.746 A, C=C=1.359(5)A) and a novel pentadentate 'organoscorpionate' ligand formed by the melding of DMAC, sulfido and trispyrazolylborate units. The latter is coordinated through two pyrazolyl N atoms (kappa2-N,N') and a tridentate kappa3-S,C,C' unit appended to N-beta of the third (uncoordinated) pyrazolyl group. The second-generation [Tp*ME(dithiolene)] complexes represent a refinement on first-generation [Tp*ME(arene-1,2-dithiolate)] complexes and their synthesis affords an opportunity to compare and contrast the electronic structures of true vs. pseudo-dithiolene ligands in otherwise analogous complexes.
