Alkynyldiphenylphosphine d8 (Pt, Rh, Ir) Complexes: Contrasting Behavior toward cis-[Pt(C6F5)2(THF)2]

Immobilizing a π-Conjugated Catecholato Framework on Surfaces of SiO2 Insulator Films via a One-Atom Anchor of a Platinum Metal Center to Modulate Organic Transistor Performance

Chemical modification of insulating material surfaces is an important methodology to improve the performance of organic field-effect transistors (OFETs). However, few redox-active self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) have been constructed on gate insulator film surfaces, in contrast to the numerous SAMs formed on many types of conducting electrodes. In this study, we report a new approach to introduce a π-conjugated organic fragment in close proximity to an insulating material surface via a transition metal center acting as a one-atom anchor. On the basis of the reported coordination chemistry of a catecholato complex of Pt(II) in solution, we demonstrate that ligand exchange can occur on an insulating material surface, affording SAMs on the SiO₂ surface derived from a newly synthesized Pt(II) complex containing a benzothienobenzothiophene (BTBT) framework in the catecholato ligand. The resultant SAMs were characterized in detail by water contact angle measurements, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. The SAMs served as good scaffolds of π-conjugated pillars for forming thin films of a well-known organic semiconductor C8-BTBT (2,7-dioctyl[1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophene), accompanied by the engagements of the C8-BTBT molecules with the SAMs containing the common BTBT framework at the first layer on SiO₂. OFETs containing the SAMs displayed improved performance in terms of hole mobility and onset voltage, presumably because of the unique interfacial structure between the organic semiconducting and inorganic insulating layers. These findings provide important insight into creating new elaborate interfaces through installing coordination chemistry in solution to solid surfaces, as well as OFET design by considering the compatibility between SAMs and organic semiconductors.

Bis(acetylacetonato)ruthenium(ii) complexes containing alkynyldiphenylphosphines. Formation and redox behaviour of [Ru(acac)2(Ph2PCCR)2] (R = H, Me, Ph) complexes and the binuclear complex cis-[{Ru(acac)2}2(µ-Ph2PCCPPh2)}2]

Two equivalents of Ph(2)PC triple bond CR (R=H, Me, Ph) react with thf solutions of cis-[Ru(acac)(2)(eta(2)-alkene)(2)] (acac=acetylacetonato; alkene=C(2)H(4), 1; C(8)H(14), 2) at room temperature to yield the orange, air-stable compounds trans-[Ru(acac)(2)(Ph(2)PC triple bond CR)(2)] (R=H, trans-3; Me=trans-4; Ph, trans-5) in isolated yields of 60-98%. In refluxing chlorobenzene, trans-4 and trans-5 are converted into the yellow, air-stable compounds cis-[Ru(acac)(2)(Ph(2)PC triple bond CR)(2)] (R=Me, cis-4; Ph, cis-5), isolated in yields of ca. 65%. From the reaction of two equivalents of Ph(2)PC triple bond CPPh(2) with a thf solution of 2 an almost insoluble orange solid is formed, which is believed to be trans-[Ru(acac)(2)(micro-Ph(2)PC triple bond CPPh(2))](n) (trans-6). In refluxing chlorobenzene, the latter forms the air-stable, yellow, binuclear compound cis-[{Ru(acac)(2)(micro-Ph(2)PC triple bond CPPh(2))}(2)] (cis-6). Electrochemical studies indicate that cis-4 and cis-5 are harder to oxidise by ca. 300 mV than the corresponding trans-isomers and harder to oxidise by 80-120 mV than cis-[Ru(acac)(2)L(2)] (L=PPh(3), PPh(2)Me). Electrochemical studies of cis-6 show two reversible Ru(II/III) oxidation processes separated by 300 mV, the estimated comproportionation constant (K(c)) for the equilibrium cis-6(2+) + cis6 <=> 2(cis-6(+)) being ca. 10(5). However, UV-Vis spectra of cis-6(+) and cis-6(2+), generated electrochemically at -50 degrees C, indicate that cis-6(+) is a Robin-Day Class II mixed-valence system. Addition of one equivalent of AgPF(6) to trans-3 and trans-4 forms the green air-stable complexes trans-3 x PF(6) and trans-4 x PF(6), respectively, almost quantitatively. The structures of trans-4, cis-4, trans-4 x PF(6) and cis-6 have been confirmed by X-ray crystallography.

Cyclodiphosphazanes with Hemilabile Ponytails: Synthesis, Transition Metal Chemistry (Ru(II), Rh(I), Pd(II), Pt(II)), and Crystal and Molecular Structures of Mononuclear (Pd(II), Rh(I)) and Bi- and Tetranuclear Rhodium(I) Complexes

Cyclodiphosphazanes having hemilabile ponytails such as cis-[(t)()BuNP(OC(6)H(4)OMe-o)](2) (2), cis-[(t)()BuNP(OCH(2)CH(2)OMe)](2) (3), cis-[(t)BuNP(OCH(2)CH(2)SMe)](2) (4), and cis-[(t)BuNP(OCH(2)CH(2)NMe(2))](2) (5) were synthesized by reacting cis-[(t)()BuNPCl](2) (1) with corresponding nucleophiles. The reaction of 2 with [M(COD)Cl(2)] afforded cis-[MCl(2)(2)(2)] derivatives (M = Pd (6), Pt (7)), whereas, with [Pd(NCPh)(2)Cl(2)], trans-[MCl(2)(2)(2)] (8) was obtained. The reaction of 2 with [Pd(PEt(3))Cl(2)](2), [{Ru(eta(6)-p-cymene)Cl(2)](2), and [M(COD)Cl](2) (M = Rh, Ir) afforded mononuclear complexes of Pd(II) (9), Ru(II) (11), Rh(I) (12), and Ir(I) (13) irrespective of the stoichiometry of the reactants and the reaction condition. In the above complexes the cyclodiphosphazane acts as a monodentate ligand. The reaction of 2 with [PdCl(eta(3)-C(3)H(5))](2) afforded binuclear complex [(PdCl(eta(3)-C(3)H(5)))(2){((t)BuNP(OC(6)H(4)OMe-o))(2)-kappaP}] (10). The reaction of ligand 3 with [Rh(CO)(2)Cl](2) in 1:1 ratio in CH(3)CN under reflux condition afforded tetranuclear rhodium(I) metallamacrocycle (14), whereas the ligands 4 and 5 afforded bischelated binuclear complexes 15 and 16, respectively. The crystal structures of 8, 9, 12, 14, and 16 are reported.

Unprecedented reversible coupling of alkynyl and phosphide ligands on a dinuclear platinum framework

The reductive coupling of the bridging phosphide and the adjacent [sigma]-alkynyl moieties in [Pt2(mu-P(t)Bu2){mu,eta1:eta2-C(Ph)CH2}(C[triple bond]C-Ph)(CO)(P(t)Bu2H)(Br)] is promoted by bromide abstraction and is reversed by adding N(n)Bu4Br.
