Abstract
Biphenol-based ligands have proven their ability to bind titanium(IV) centers and generate sophisticated self-assembled structures in which auxiliary nitrogen ligands often complete the coordination sphere of the metal and improve stability. Here, a central 4,4'-bipyridine, which acts as both a spacer and a source of monodentate nitrogen to complete the coordination sphere of the Ti(IV) complex, was incorporated within two bis-2,2'-biphenol strands, 3H4 and 4H4. Both proligands possess structural features that are well adapted to form self-assembled structures built from titanium-oxygen-nitrogen units; however, their different degrees of torsional freedom strongly influenced the nuclearity of the complexes formed. The presence of a phenyl spacer between the bipyridine and the biphenol moieties of 3H4 provided enough flexibility for the ligand to wrap around one titanium(IV) center to form a mononuclear complex Ti(3)(DMF)2 in the presence of dimethylformamide (DMF). Assembly of the more rigid ligand 4H4 with Ti(OiPr)4 afforded a tetranuclear complex Ti4(4)2(4H)2(OEt)2 containing four stacked 4,4'-bipyridine units as shown by the X-ray structure of the complex. Density functional theory studies suggested that the assembly of this tetrametallic complex involves a dimetallic intermediate with TiO6 nodes that is converted to the thermodynamically stable tetranuclear complex with two TiO6 nodes and two TiO5N units with enhanced covalent character.

Abstract
As previously shown, alkali and alkaline earth metal iodides in nonaqueous, aprotic solvents behave like transition metal halides, forming cis- and trans-dihalides with various neutral O-donor ligands. These compounds can be used as precursors for the synthesis of new mixed alkali/alkaline earth metal aggregates. We show here that Ln2+ ions form isostructural cluster compounds. Thus, with LiOtBu, 50% of the initial iodide can be replaced in MI2, M=Ca, Sr, Ba, Eu, to generate the mixed-metal alkoxide aggregates [IM(OtBu)4{Li(thf)}4(OH)], for which the M--OH contacts were investigated by theoretical methods. With M'OPh (M'=Li, Na), a new mixed-metal aryloxide cluster type [MM'6(OPh)8(thf)6] is obtained for M=Ca, Sr, Ba, Sm, Eu. Their stability versus DME (DME=1,2-dimethoxyethane) as bidentate ligand is studied.

Abstract
The stoichiometric treatment of 2,6-dibenzylphenol (HOdbp) or 2,2"-dimethoxy-2,6-dibenzylphenol (HOdbpOMe) with n-butyllithium or sodium bis(trimethylsilyl)amide (the latter as a solution in THF) in Et2O or DME affords the dimeric alkali metal phenolates [{M(Odbp)(L)}2] (M = Li; L = Et2O (1), L = DME (2), M = Na; L = Et2O (5), L = DME (6)), [{Li(OdbpOMe)}2] (3) and [{M(OdbpOMe)(L)}2] (M = Li; L = DME (4), M = Na; L = THF (7), L = DME (8)). Complexes 3 and 7 exhibit -OdbpOMe methoxy coordination and all four sodium complexes (5-8) display pi-aryl contacts from one phenolate radial arm to each sodium centre. The attempted synthesis of {Na(odbp)}n by direct sodiation of HOdbp yields a small quantity of the 2-benzylphenolate [{Na(Ombp)(DME)}4] (9) (-Ombp = -OC6H4-2-CH2Ph), providing a rare example of benzyl C-C bond scission.
