Structural Consequences of the Prohibition of Hydrogen Bonding in Copper−Guanidine Systems

Twisted and Disconnected Chains: Flexible Linear Tetracuprous Arrays and a Decanuclear CuI Cluster as Blue- and Green/Yellow-Light Emitters

Defined arrays of transition metal ions embedded in tailored polydentate ligand scaffolds allow for a systematic design of their physical properties. Such molecular strings of closed-shell transition metal centers are particularly interesting for Group 11 metal ions in the oxidation state +1 if they undergo metallophilic d10···d10 contact interactions since these clusters are oftentimes efficient photoluminescence (PL) emitters. Copper is particularly attractive as a sustainable earth-abundant coinage metal source and because of the ability of several CuI complexes to serve as powerful thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters in molecular/organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs). Our combined synthetic, crystallographic, photophysical, and computational study describes a straight tetracuprous array possessing a centrally disconnected CuI2···CuI2 chain and a continuous helically bent CuI4 complex. This molecular helix undergoes a facile rearrangement in diethyl ether solution, yielding an unprecedented nanosized CuI10 cluster (2.9 × 2.0 nm) upon crystallization. All three clusters show either bright blue phosphorescence, TADF, or green/yellow multiband phosphorescence with quantum yields between 6.5 and 67%, which is persistent under hydrostatic pressure up to 30 kbar. Temperature-dependent PL investigations in combination with time-dependent density-functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations and void space analyses of the crystal packings complement a comprehensive correlation between the molecular structures and photoluminescence properties.

Linear Copper Complex Arrays as Versatile Molecular Strings: Syntheses, Structures, Luminescence, and Magnetism

The defined linear arrangement of metal atoms in discrete coordination complexes or polymers is still one of the most intriguing challenges in synthetic chemistry. These chain arrangements are of fundamental importance, because of their potential applications as molecular wires and single molecule magnets (SMM) in microelectronic devices on a molecular scale. Oligonuclear Group 11 metal complexes with suitable bridging ligands, specifically those that are based on copper as the first choice of a cheap precursor coinage metal, are of particular interest in this regard. This is due to the superior luminescence properties of these linear clusters that often show d¹⁰ ⋅⋅⋅d¹⁰ interactions in their molecular structures. The combination of Cu^I with heavier coinage metal ions results in tunable emissive arrays that are also stimuli-responsive. Thus, both linear multinuclear Cu^I and linear heteropolymetallic Cu^I /Ag^I as well as Cu^I /Au^I clusters are excellent candidates for applications in molecular/organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs). Alternatively, paramagnetic multinuclear cupric arrays are prominent as potential molecular wires with enhanced magnetic properties through multiple coupled d⁹ centers. This Review covers the whole range of linear multinuclear assemblies of cuprous and cupric ions in complexes and coordination polymers, their syntheses, photophysical behavior, and magnetic properties. Moreover, recent advances in the rapidly progressing field of hetero-Cu^I /Ag^I and Cu^I /Au^I molecular strings are also discussed.

Copper(I) iodide ribbons coordinated with thiourea derivatives

Two products of the reactions of CuI with 1-benzoyl-3-(4-bromophenyl)thiourea and with 1-benzoyl-3-(2-iodophenyl)thiourea have been obtained and characterized, namely poly[[[1-benzoyl-3-(4-bromophenyl)thiourea-κS]-μ₃-iodido-copper(I)] acetone hemisolvate], {[CuI(C₁₄H₁₁BrN₂OS)]·0.5C₃H₆O}_n, and poly[μ₄-iodido-μ₃-iodido-[N-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)benzamide-κN]dicopper(I)], [Cu₂I₂(C₁₄H₁₀N₂OS)]_n. Their structures, determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, exhibit different stoichiometries and molecular organizations; however, both compounds are polymeric and possess close Cu...Cu contacts. The first product contains a (CuI)_n double chain supported by the thiourea derivative coordinated via the S atom. In the second case, the ligand undergoes dehalogenation and cyclization to form N-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)benzamide that serves as the N-donor ligand which is connected to both sides of a (CuI)_n quadruple chain. In both hybrid inorganic chains, I atoms bridge three or four Cu atoms. The coordination centres adopt more or less distorted tetrahedral geometries. The structures of the (CuI)_n kernels of the ribbons are similar to fragments of the layers in high-pressure phase V copper(I) iodide. Only weak S...O, C-H...O, C-H...I and π-π interactions hold the ribbons together, allowing the formation of crystals.

Versatile Coordination Modes of Triphospha-1,4-pentadiene-2,4-diamine

1,3,5-Triphospha-1,4-pentadiene-2,4-diamine reacts with [M(CO)₄L] (M = Mo, L = nbd (norbornadiene); M = W, L = 2 CH₃CN) to give the chelate complexes [M(CO)₄(PMes{C(NHCy)PMes}₂-κ P¹ ,P³)]. In contrast, an unusual intramolecular rearrangement occurred with [Cu(CH₃CN)₄]PF₆ leading to the dimeric copper(I) complex [Cu(CNCy){PHMesPMesC(NHCy)PMes-κ P¹ ,P³}]₂(PF₆)₂. The mechanism of the rearrangement was supported by quantum-mechanical calculations. The transition-metal complexes were characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray crystallography.

Structural and theoretical investigation of 2-iminoimidazolines ? carbene analogues of iminophosphoranes

The preparation of 2-iminoimidazolines - has been accomplished by the Staudinger reaction of the carbenes 1,3-di-tert-butylimidazolin-2-ylidene (), 1,3-diisopropyl-4,5-dimethylimidazolin-2-ylidene (), 1,3-diisopropylimidazolin-2-ylidene (), 1,3-bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)imidazolin-2-ylidene (), 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenylimidazolin-2-ylidene () and 1,3,4,5-tetramethylimidazolin-2-ylidene () with trimethylsilyl azide (Me3SiN3) followed by desilylation of the resulting 2-trimethylsilyliminoimidazolines -. The X-ray crystal structures of and have been established, revealing C1-N1-Si1 angles that are more obtuse than the corresponding P-N-Si angles observed in related trimethylsilyl iminophosphoranes. Together with , the disilylated side product 1,3-diisopropyl-2-(trimethylsilylimino)-4-trimethylsilylimidazoline () has been isolated and structurally characterized. Cleavage of the N-Si bonds in and formation of is easily achieved by stirring in methanol. The molecular structures of the 2-iminoimidazolines are reported, indicating that the structural parameters are best described by non-ylidic resonance structures and that electron delocalization within the imidazole heterocycle does not play a crucial role in these imine systems. Compound forms a head-to-head dimer in the solid state via weak intermolecular N-H...N contacts, which have additionally been characterized by means of compliance constants. To further analyze the electronic structure of these imines in comparison to related guanidine ligands, the proton affinities (PAs) of the model compounds 2-imino-1,3-dimethylimidazoline (), 2-imino-1,3-dimethylimidazolidine () and tetramethylguanidine () have been calculated by means of density functional theory. Finally, the charge distribution in - and the relative contribution of relevant resonance structures have been determined using natural bond orbitals (NBO) and natural resonance theory (NRT).

Synthesis and reactivity of copper(i) complexes containing a bis(imidazolin-2-imine) pincer ligand

The new pincer ligand 2,6-bis[(1,3-di-tert-butylimidazolin-2-imino)methyl]pyridine (TL(tBu)) has been prepared in high yield from 2,6-bis(hydroxymethyl)pyridine (1) and 1,3-di-tert-butylimidazolin-2-imine (3). Reaction of TL(tBu) with [Cu(MeCN)4]PF6 affords the highly reactive copper(I) complex [(TL(tBu))Cu]PF6, [5]PF6, which forms the stable copper(I) isocyanide complexes [6a]PF6 (nu(CN) = 2179 cm(-1)) and [6b]PF6 (nu(CN) = 2140 cm(-1)) upon addition of tert-butyl or 2,6-dimethylphenyl isocyanide, respectively. For the cations 6a and 6b, DFT calculations reveal ground-state electronic structures of the type [(TL(tBu)-kappaN(1):kappaN(2))Cu(CNR)] with tricoordinate geometries around the copper atoms. Exposure of [5]PF6 to the air readily leads to trapping of atmospheric CO2 to form the square-planar complex [(TL(tBu))Cu(HCO3-kappaO)]PF6, [7]PF6, with the bicarbonate ligand adopting a rarely observed monodentate coordination mode. In chlorinated solvents such as dichloromethane or chloroform, [5]PF(6) rapidly abstracts chloride by reductive dechlorination of the solvent to yield [(TL(tBu))CuCl]PF6, [8]PF6 quantitatively. Reaction of TL(tBu) with copper(I) bromide or chloride affords complexes 9a and 9b, respectively, for which X-ray diffraction analysis, low-temperature NMR experiments and DFT calculations reveal the presence of a kappa(2)-coordinated ligand of the type [(TL(tBu)-kappaN(1):kappaN(2))CuX]. In solution, complex 9b undergoes slow disproportionation forming the mixed-valence copper(II)/copper(I) system [(TL(tBu))CuCl][CuCl2], [8]CuCl2 with a linear dichlorocuprate(I) counterion.

Synthesis and structural characterization of lanthanide complexes with the di- or tri-anionic diguanidinate ligand: new insight into the flexibility and distinct reactivity of the linked diguanidinate ligand

Unprecedented disproportionation and deprotonation of the linked diguanidinate ligand have been established, demonstrating, for the first time, that the number and distribution of negative charges on the diguanidinate ligand are tunable, and representing a new and efficient method for synthesis of linked diguanidinate di- and tri-anion complexes.

Application of neutral amidines and guanidines in coordination chemistry

The aim of this perspective is to highlight the continued development and application of amidines and guanidines as neutral, N-based donor ligands in coordination chemistry. From a sporadic interest dating back to the 1980s, work on these two closely related classes of compounds has steadily grown, with examples of evermore sophisticated substitution about the common ligand framework being developed to address specific problems in a number of fields of chemistry. These compounds have shown varied coordination modes at metals from across the periodic table, and examples of their application in a number of catalytic processes are emerging as the field matures.
