Abstract
8-Hydroxyquinoline and its derivatives, which belong to a well-known class of quinoline based drugs with varied biological activities, have been extensively explored for the treatments of cancer, Alzheimer's disease, neurodegenerative diseases and other life-threatening diseases. In virtue of the existence of bicyclic heterocyclic scaffold, their bidentate chelators can further bind to metal ions via O- and N-donors from 8-hydroxylquinolinol skeletons to yield a variety of metal 8-hydroxylquinolinol complexes appealing as the anticancer drugs with low toxicity, due to their better biological effects and higher anticancer activities than free 8-hydroxylquinolinol ligands and cis-diammine-dichloro-platinum. The present review summarizes the recent developments in the syntheses, crystal structures, and anticancer activities of metal 8-hydroxylquinolinol complexes, attempting to discover a correlation between their structures and anticancer activities, and to provide an evidence for their potential application perspectives. It means to offer the helpful and meaningful guidance for the researchers in the future syntheses of new and highly efficient anticancer metal 8-hydroxylquinolinol complexes based drugs.

Abstract
Though urgently needed, high-performance near-infrared organic light-emitting diodes (NIR-OLEDs) are still rare. NIR-OLEDs based on conventional NIR fluorescent materials usually suffer from low external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) because of the intrinsic obstacles according to the spin-statistics limit and energy-gap law. Herein, we realized high-efficiency and low efficiency roll-off fluorescent NIR-OLEDs through efficient triplet fusion of a bipolar host doped with a special naphthoselenadiazole emitter (4,9-bis(4-(2,2-diphenylvinyl)phenyl)-naphtho[2,3-c][1,2,5]selenadiazole, NSeD). Unlike typical NIR organic donor-acceptor (D-A) chromophores, NSeD features a non-D-A structure and a very large HOMO/LUMO overlap and displays a strong deep-red to NIR fluorescence and unique ambipolar character. The corresponding photoluminescence quantum efficiency of NSeD reaches 52% in solution and retains 17% in the blend film. The optimized NIR-OLEDs demonstrated a strong emission at 700 nm, a high maximum EQE of 2.1% (vs. the predicted theoretical maximum efficiency of 1.3%) and the EQE remained at around 2% over a wide range of current densities from 18 to 200 mA cm-2, which is amongst the highest performance for NIR-OLEDs based on organic fluorescent materials.

Abstract
Novel mononuclear Zn(II) and Al(III) complexes were synthesized from the reactions of Zn(OAc)(2).2H(2)O and anhydrous AlCl(3) with neutral N2O2 donor tetradentate Schiff bases; N,N'bis(salicylaldehyde)4,5-dimethyl-1,2-phenylenediamine (H(2)L(1)) and N,N'bis(salicylaldehyde)4,5-dichloro-1,2-phenylenediamine (H(2)L(2)). The new complexes were fully characterized by using micro analyses (CHN), FT-IR, (1)H NMR, UV-Vis spectra and thermal analysis. The analytical data have been showed that, the stoichiometry of the complexes is 1:1. Spectroscopic data suggested tetrahedral and square pyramidal geometries for Zn(II) and Al(III) complexes, respectively. The synthesized Zn(II), and Al(III) complexes exhibited intense fluorescence emission in the visible region upon UV-excitation in methylene chloride solution at ambient temperature. This high fluorescence emission was assigned to the strong coordination of the ligands to the small and the highly charged Zn(II) and Al(III) ions. Such strong coordination seems to extend the π-conjugation of the complexes. Thermal analysis measurements indicated that the complexes have good thermal stability. As a potential application the biological activity (e.g., antimicrobial action) of the prepared ligands and complexes was assessed by in-vitro testing of their effect on the growth of various strains of bacteria and fungi.

Abstract
Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) have attracted great attention because of their potential applications in full-color displays and solid-state lights. In the continual effort to search for ideal materials for OLEDs, small molecules with bipolar transporting character are extremely attractive as they offer the possibility to achieve efficient and stable OLEDs even in a simple single-layer device. In this Research News, we review the two design strategies of bipolar materials for OLEDs: molecules with or without donor-acceptor structures. The correlation between the experimental results and theoretical calculations of some of the materials is also discussed.

Abstract
Two Ga(III) complexes with main ligand, 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)benzothiazole (HL'), namely mixed-ligand ML2X-type [GaL'2X'] (1) (HX'=acetic acid, as ancillary ligand) and the meridianal tris-chelate [GaL'3] (2) have been investigated by the density functional theory (DFT/TDDFT) level calculations. Both 1 and 2 can be presented as a similar "mixed-ligand ML2X-type" species. The molecular geometries, electronic structures, metal-ligand bonding property of Ga-O (N) (main ligand), Ga-O (N) (ancillary ligand) interactions, and the ancillary ligand effect on their HOMO-LUMO gap, their absorption/emission property, and their absorption/emission wavelengths/colors for them have been discussed in detail based on the orbital interactions, the partial density of states (PDOS), and so on. The current investigation also indicates that it is quite probable that by introduction of different ancillary ligands, a series of new mixed-ligand ML2X-type complexes for group 13 metals can be designed with their absorption/emission property and the absorption/emission wavelengths and colors being tuned.

Abstract
As part of our interest into the bioinorganic chemistry of gallium, gallium(III) complexes of the azole ligands 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (btd), 1,2,3-benzotriazole (btaH), and 1-methyl-4,5-diphenylimidazole (L) have been isolated. Reaction of btaH or btd with GaBr3 or GaCl3 resulted in the mononuclear complexes [GaBr3(btaH)2] (1) and [GaCl3(btd)2] (2), respectively, while treatment of GaCl3 with L resulted in the anionic complex (LH)2[GaCl4] (3). All three complexes were characterized by single-crystal X-ray crystallography and IR spectroscopy, while their antiproliferative activities were investigated against a series of human and mouse cancer cell lines.

Abstract
The Schiff-base ligand aluminum complex, [AlLMe2] [L = ortho-C6H4(NC6H3Me2-2,6)(CH=NC6H3Me2-2,6)], has been synthesised and characterised; its electroluminescent properties are reported. Electroluminescent devices were fabricated by doping [AlLMe2] in a polymer host of poly (vinylcarbazole) (PVK) and 2-tert-butylphenyl-5-biphenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazole (PBD) using a simple solution spin-coating technique. The single-layer polymer organic light-emitter devices exhibited green emission, showed maximum current efficiency of 1.4 cd/A and maximum luminance of near 1000 cd/m2.

Abstract
Detailed theoretical and experimental investigations have been presented on a novel binuclear gallium complex Ga2(saph)2q2, a potentially active and novel material for organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). The density-functional theory has been employed to shed light on the reason why this complex exhibits bipolar character. Theoretical results, such as ionization potential and electron affinity, and optimized geometries are in good agreement with what we have obtained experimentally. Our theoretical analysis provides new insight into the origin of bipolar features. Such character enables the gallium complex to become a prosperous hole and electron transporter used to fabricate single-layer OLEDs, which exhibit better electroluminescence compared with those originated from the previously well-adopted tri(8-hydroxyquinoline)aluminum (Alq3). An OLED device of single Ga2(saph)2q2 layer exhibiting desirable performances has been fabricated, which is in good agreement with the theoretical analysis.

Abstract
A binuclear aluminium(III) chelate with rigid and flexible mixed ligands has been synthesized and structurally characterized, which exhibits polymer-like molecular packing and solution-processiblity, as well as high photoluminescence quantum yield for organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs); with this new compound as the emissive and host layer, the multi-layer OLEDs prepared via low-cost spin-coating showed encouraging performance.
