Abstract
We report the synthesis, crystal structure, and characterisation of a dinuclear Co(II) compound with thiodiacetate (tda) and phenanthroline (phen) as ligands (1), and of a series of metal complexes isomorphous to 1 with different Co : Zn ratios (2, 4 : 1; 3, 1 : 1; 4, 1 : 4; 5, 1 : 10). General characterisation methodologies and X-ray data showed that all the synthesised complexes are isomorphous to Zn(II) and Cu(II) analogues (CSD codes: DUHXEL and BEBQII). 1 consists of centrosymmetric Co(II) ion dimers in which the ions are 3.214 Å apart, linked by two μ-O bridges. Each cobalt atom is in a distorted octahedral environment of the N2O3S type. UV-vis spectra of 1 and 5 are in line with high spin (S = 3/2) Co(II) ions in octahedral coordination and indicate that the electronic structure of both Co(II) ions in the dinuclear unit does not significantly change relative to that of the magnetically isolated Co(II) ion. EPR spectra of powder samples of 5 (Co : Zn ratio of 1 : 10) together with spectral simulation indicated high spin Co(II) ions with high rhombic distortion of the zfs [E/D = 0.31(1), D > 0]. DC magnetic susceptibility experiments on 1 and analysis of the data constraining the E/D value obtained by EPR yielded g = 2.595(7), |D| = 61(1) cm-1, and an intradimer ferromagnetic exchange coupling of J = 1.39(4) cm-1. EPR spectra as a function of Co : Zn ratio for both powder and single crystal samples confirmed that they result from two effective S' = 1/2 spins that interact through dipolar and isotropic exchange interactions to yield magnetically isolated S' = 1 centres and that interdimeric exchange interactions, putatively mediated by hydrophobic interactions between phen moieties, are negligible. The latter observation contrasts with that observed in the Cu(II) analogue, where a transition from S = 1 to S' = 1/2 was observed. Computational calculations indicated that the absence of the interdimeric exchange interaction in 1 is due to a lower Co(II) ion spin density delocalisation towards the metal ligands.

Abstract
Ester hydrates, as the intermediates of the esterification between acid and alcohol, are very short-lived and challenging to be trapped. Therefore, the crystal structures of ester hydrates have rarely been characterized. Herein, we present that the mono-deprotonated ester hydrates [CH3OSO2(OH)2]-, serving as the template for the self-assembly of a π-stacked boat-shaped macrocycle (CH3OSO2(OH)2)0.67(CH3OSO3)1.33@{[ClLCoII]6}·Cl4·13CH3OH·9H2O (1) (L = tris(2-benzimidazolylmethyl) amine), can be trapped in the host by multiple NH···O hydrogen bonds. In the solution of CoCl2, L, and H2SO4 in MeOH, HSO4- reacts with MeOH, producing [CH3OSO3]- via the ester hydrate intermediate of [CH3OSO3(OH)2]-. Both the product and the intermediate serve as the template directing the self-assembly of the π-stacked macrocycle, in which the short-lived ester hydrate is firmly trapped and stabilized, as revealed by single-crystal analysis.

Abstract
Single-crystal-to-single-crystal metalation of organic ligands represents a novel method to prepare metal-organic complexes, but remains challenging. Herein, a hierarchical self-assembly {(H12L8)·([N(C2H5)4]+)3·(ClO4-)15·(H2O)32} (1) (L = tris(2-benzimidazolylmethyl) amine) consisting of π-stacked cubes which are assembled from eight partially protonated L ligands is obtained. By soaking the crystals of compound 1 in the aqueous solution of Co(SCN)2, the ligands coordinate with Co2+ ions stoichiometrically and ClO4- exchange with SCN- via single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation, leading to {([CoSCNL]+)8·([NC8H20]+)3·(SCN)11·(H2O)13} (2).

Slow Magnetic Relaxation in {[CoCxAPy)] 2.15 H 2O} n MOF Built from Ladder-Structured 2D Layers with Dimeric SMM Rungs. Molecules 2021; 26:5626. Abstract
We present the magnetic properties of the metal-organic framework {[CoCxAPy]·2.15 H2O}n (Cx = bis(carboxypropyl)tetramethyldisiloxane; APy = 4,4`-azopyridine) (1) that builds up from the stacking of 2D coordination polymers. The 2D-coordination polymer in the bc plane is formed by the adjacent bonding of [CoCxAPy] 1D two-leg ladders with Co dimer rungs, running parallel to the c-axis. The crystal packing of 2D layers shows the presence of infinite channels running along the c crystallographic axis, which accommodate the disordered solvate molecules. The Co(II) is six-coordinated in a distorted octahedral geometry, where the equatorial plane is occupied by four carboxylate oxygen atoms. Two nitrogen atoms from APy ligands are coordinated in apical positions. The single-ion magnetic anisotropy has been determined by low temperature EPR and magnetization measurements on an isostructural compound {[Zn0.8Co0.2CxAPy]·1.5 CH3OH}n (2). The results show that the Co(II) ion has orthorhombic anisotropy with the hard-axis direction in the C2V main axis, lying the easy axis in the distorted octahedron equatorial plane, as predicted by the ab initio calculations of the g-tensor. Magnetic and heat capacity properties at very low temperatures are rationalized within a S* = 1/2 magnetic dimer model with anisotropic antiferromagnetic interaction. The magnetic dimer exhibits slow relaxation of the magnetization (SMM) below 6 K in applied field, with a tlf ≈ 2 s direct process at low frequencies, and an Orbach process at higher frequencies with U/kB = 6.7 ± 0.5 K. This compound represents a singular SMM MOF built-up of Co-dimers with an anisotropic exchange interaction.

Abstract
Synthetic metal complexes can be used as paramagnetic probes for the study of proteins and protein complexes. Herein, two transition metal NMR probes (TraNPs) are reported. TraNPs are attached through two arms to a protein to generate a pseudocontact shift (PCS) using cobalt(II), or paramagnetic relaxation enhancement (PRE) with manganese(II). The PCS analysis of TraNPs attached to three different proteins shows that the size of the anisotropic component of the magnetic susceptibility depends on the probe surroundings at the surface of the protein, contrary to what is observed for lanthanoid‐based probes. The observed PCS are relatively small, making cobalt‐based probes suitable for localized studies, such as of an active site. The obtained PREs are stronger than those obtained with nitroxide spin labels and the possibility to generate both PCS and PRE offers advantages. The properties of TraNPs in comparison with other cobalt‐based probes are discussed.

Abstract
A high-spin Co(II) cluster with a rare pentagonal molecular structure and formula [Co(5)(CO(3))(2)(bpp)(5)]ClO(4) (1; Hbpp is 2,6-bis(phenyliminomethyl)-4-methylphenolate) has been synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. This topology arises from fusing five [Co(2)(bpp)] moieties in a cyclic manner around two CO(3)(2-) central ligands, resulting in propeller-like configuration. The irregular coordination of the carbonate ions to the metal centers results in a combination of coordination numbers (CNs) of the Co(II) ions of five and six. The bulk magnetization of this complicated magnetically exchanged system has been modeled successfully by employing a matrix diagonalization technique. For this, the combination of S=3/2 ions (CN=5) with ions exhibiting strong spin-orbit coupling (CN=6) has been considered and a perturbative approach to handle the data in the whole studied range of temperatures (2-300 K) yielding parameters of g and D (for the five-coordinate Co(II) ions), of A, κ, λ, and Δ (for the metals with spin-orbit coupling) and of the exchange constants J. The agreement with results from DFT calculations, also presented here, is remarkable.

Abstract
The purpose of this critical review is to give a representative and comprehensive overview of the arising developments in the field of magnetic metal-organic frameworks, in particular those containing cobalt(II). We examine the diversity of magnetic exchange interactions between nearest-neighbour moment carriers, covering from dimers to oligomers and discuss their implications in infinite chains, layers and networks, having a variety of topologies. We progress to the different forms of short-range magnetic ordering, giving rise to single-molecule-magnets and single-chain-magnets, to long-range ordering of two- and three-dimensional networks (323 references).

Abstract
Polymeric networks, {[Co(dpyo)(ox)]}(n) (1), {[Co(dpyo)(fum)(H(2)O)(2)]}(n) (1) and {[Co(dpyo)(tp)(H(2)O)(2)] x [Co(H(2)O)(6)] x (tp) x (H(2)O)}(n) (3) [ox = oxalate dianion, fum = fumarate dianion, tp = terephthalate dianion and dpyo = 4,4'-dipyridyl N,N'-dioxide] have been synthesized and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. The structural determination reveals 1 and 2 are covalent bonded 2D networks of 4,4 topology and of these, complex 2 undergoes a H-bonding scheme resulting in a 3D supramolecular architecture. Complex 3 is a 1D coordination polymer built up by almost collinear hexacoordinated Co(ii), doubly bridged by a tp carboxylate group and a dpyo oxygen, which in combination with lattice [Co(H(2)O)(6)](2+), tp and water molecules shows an unprecedented 3D supramolecular network through H-bonding. In the polymer the dpyo shows novel mu-4,4 bridging mode towards the cobalt ion. Low temperature magnetic interaction reveals antiferromagnetic coupling in all of the complexes.

Abstract
The reactivity of cobalt(II) salts towards H(3)L (2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-1,3-bis[4-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-3-azabut-3-enyl]-1,3-imidazolidine) was studied in different reaction conditions. Accordingly, the interaction of cobalt(II) acetate with H(3)L in methanol gives rise to the discrete complex [Co(III)(2)L(OAc)(2)(OMe)]*1.5H(2)O.MeOH, 1. Reaction of cobalt(II) acetylacetonate with H(3)L in the presence of dicarboxylic acids was also investigated. Thus, when cobalt(II) acetylacetonate and H(3)L are mixed with terephthalic or malonic acid in 4 : 2 : 1 molar ratios, the mixed valent [Co(II/III)(2)L(acac)(p-O(2)CC(6)H(4)CO(2)H)][Co(II/III)(2)L(acac)(OH)]*2H(2)O*2MeOH, 2 and [Co(II/III)(2)L(acac)(O(2)CCH(2)CO(2)H)][Co(II/III)(2)L(acac)(OH)]*7H(2)O, complexes are isolated. Decreasing the pH of the medium, by addition of a second mol of dicarboxylic acid, leads to [Co(II/III)(2)L(O(2)CCH(2)CO(2))(MeOH)]*2MeOH, 4, while the reaction with terephthalic acid does not proceed. 1, 2 and 4 were crystallographically characterised and all the complexes are dinuclear, with hydrogen bonds that expand the initial nodes. The magnetic characterisation, as well as the NMR spectroscopy, indicates a diamagnetic nature for 1, in agreement with the presence of Co(III), showing the aerial oxidation suffered by the cobalt(II) ions. Nevertheless, are paramagnetic. Temperature variable magnetic measurements were recorded for the crystallographically characterised complexes 2 and 4 and these studies confirm the mixed valence Co(II)/Co(III) nature of the compounds. The best fits of the magnetic data give an axial distortion parameter Delta = 628.7 cm(-1) for 2 and 698.8 cm(-1) for 4, and spin-orbit coupling constant lambda = -117.8 cm(-1) for 2 and -107.0 cm(-1) for 4. Therefore, this study shows that the oxidation degree of the initial cobalt(ii) salt by atmospheric oxygen can be controlled according to the pH of the medium.
