Abstract
Hydrodefluorination selective to the ortho position to amides is accomplished under mild conditions using sodium borohydride and a nickel catalyst. The facile formation of a nickelacycle intermediate with a specific geometry ensures selectivity without the need for electronic directing groups, and fluorine atoms in other positions remain intact. This method avoids the use of stoichiometric silanes which are typical for most other defluorination reactions, resulting in virtually no organic waste byproducts.

Abstract
Agostic interactions are examples of σ-type interactions, typically resulting from interactions between C–H σ-bonds with empty transition metal d orbitals. Such interactions often reflect the first step in transition metal-catalysed C–H activation processes and thus are of critical importance in understanding and controlling σ bond activation chemistries. Herein, we report on the unusual electronic structure of linear electron-rich d9 Ni(i) complexes with symmetric bis(C–H) agostic interactions. A combination of Ni K edge and L edge XAS with supporting TD-DFT/DFT calculations reveals an unconventional covalent agostic interaction with limited contributions from the valence Ni 3d orbitals. The agostic interaction is driven via the empty Ni 4p orbitals. The surprisingly strong Ni 4p-derived agostic interaction is dominated by σ contributions with minor π contributions. The resulting ligand–metal donation occurs directly along the C–Ni bond axis, reflecting a novel mode of bis-agostic bonding. Symmetric Ni(i) agostic complexes reveal an unusual mode of bonding that is dominated by direct carbon-to-metal charge transfer.![]()

Abstract
We present a detailed DFT mechanistic study on the first Ni-catalyzed direct carbonyl-Heck coupling of aryl triflates and aldehydes to afford ketones. The precatalyst Ni(COD)2 is activated with the phosphine (phos) ligand, followed by coordination of the substrate PhOTf, to form [Ni(phos)(PhOTf)] for intramolecular PhOTf to Ni(0) oxidative addition. The ensuing phenyl-Ni(ii) triflate complex substitutes benzaldehyde for triflate by an interchange mechanism, leaving the triflate anion in the second coordination sphere held by Coulomb attraction. The Ni(ii) complex cation undergoes benzaldehyde C[double bond, length as m-dash]O insertion into the Ni-Ph bond, followed by β-hydride elimination, to produce Ni(ii)-bound benzophenone, which is released by interchange with triflate. The resulting neutral Ni(ii) hydride complex leads to regeneration of the active catalyst following base-mediated deprotonation/reduction. The benzaldehyde C[double bond, length as m-dash]O insertion is the rate-determining step. The triflate anion, while remaining in the second sphere, engages in electrostatic interactions with the first sphere, thereby stabilizing the intermediate/transition state and enabling the desired reactivity. This is the first time that such second-sphere interaction and its impact on cross-coupling reactivity has been elucidated. The new insights gained from this study can help better understand and improve Heck-type reactions.

Abstract
Terminal NiIII hydrides are proposed intermediates in proton reduction catalyzed by both molecular electrocatalysts and metalloenzymes, but well-defined examples of paramagnetic nickel hydride complexes are largely limited to bridging hydrides. Herein, we report the synthesis of an S = 1/2, terminally bound thiolate-NiIII-H complex. This species and its terminal hydride ligand in particular have been thoroughly characterized by vibrational and EPR techniques, including pulse EPR studies. Corresponding DFT calculations suggest appreciable spin leakage onto the thiolate ligand. The hyperfine coupling to the terminal hydride ligand of the thiolate-NiIII-H species is comparable to that of the hydride ligand proposed for the Ni-C hydrogenase intermediate (NiIII-H-FeII). Upon warming, the featured thiolate-NiIII-H species undergoes bimolecular reductive elimination of H2. Associated kinetic studies are discussed and compared with a structurally related FeIII-H species that has also recently been reported to undergo bimolecular H-H coupling.

Abstract
A Pd(ii) chloride complex supported by a Yamashita-Nozaki PBP pincer ligand, [C6H4-1,2-(NCH2PtBu2)2B]PdCl (1a), was synthesized. The structure, properties and catalytic activity of complex 1a were compared with those of the corresponding POCOP pincer complex [C6H3-2,6-(OPtBu2)2]PdCl (2a). It was found that the Pd centre in complex 1a is more electron rich and easier to be oxidized than that in complex 2a; complex 1a is a much better catalyst for Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions than complex 2a. Starting from complexes 1a and 2a, two series of Pd(ii) pincer complexes bearing a SH, BH4, N[combining low line]CS, N[combining low line]CSe or N3 covalent ligand, [C6H4-1,2-(NCH2PtBu2)2B]PdY (Y = SH, 1b; BH4; 1c; N[combining low line]CS, 1d; N[combining low line]CSe, 1e; and N3, 1f) and [C6H3-2,6-(OPtBu2)2]PdY (Y = SH, 2b; BH4, 2c; N[combining low line]CS, 2d; N[combining low line]CSe, 2e; and N3, 2f), were synthesized and fully characterized. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that the Pd centre is less tightly chelated in PBP pincer complexes. The strong σ-donor ability of the PBP pincer ligand has little influence on the structure of the covalent ligand possessing both σ-donor and π-acceptor properties. However, the stretching vibrational frequencies of N[combining low line]CS, N[combining low line]CSe and N3 ligands and the coordination mode of the BH4 ligand are significantly different in these two types of palladium pincer complexes.

Abstract
The recently published purely metallo-organic NiI salt [Ni(cod)2 ][Al(ORF )4 ] (1, cod=1,5-cyclooctadiene, RF =C(CF3 )3 ) provides a starting point for a new synthesis strategy leading to NiI phosphine complexes, replacing cod ligands by phosphines. Clearly visible colour changes indicate reactions within minutes, while quantum chemical calculations (PBE0-D3(BJ)/def2-TZVPP) approve exergonic reaction enthalpies in all performed ligand exchange reactions. Hence, [Ni(dppp)2 ][Al(ORF )4 ] (2, dppp=1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane), [Ni(dppe)2 ][Al(ORF )4 ] (3, dppe=1,3-bis(diphenyl-phosphino)ethane), three-coordinate [Ni(PPh3 )3 ][Al(ORF )4 ] (4) and a remarkable two-coordinate NiI phosphine complex [Ni(PtBu3 )2 ][Al(ORF )4 ] (5) were characterised by single crystal X-ray structure analysis. EPR studies were performed, confirming a nickel d9 -configuration in complexes 2, 4 and 5. This result is supported by additional magnetization measurements of 4 and 5. Further investigations by cyclic voltammetry indicate relatively high oxidation potentials for these NiI compounds between 0.7 and 1.7 V versus Fc/Fc+ . Screening reactions with O2 and CO gave first insights on the reaction behaviour of the NiI phosphine complexes towards small molecules with formation of mixed phosphine-CO-NiI complexes and oxidation processes yielding new NiI and/or NiII derivatives. Moreover, 4 reacted with CH2 Cl2 at RT to give a dimeric NiII ylide complex (4 c). As CH2 Cl2 is a rather stable alkyl halide with relatively high C-Cl bond energies, 4 appears to be a suitable reagent for more general C-Cl bond activation reactions.

Abstract
The 15e square-planar complexes [Co(PCPMe-iPr)Cl] (2a) and [Co(PCP-tBu)Cl] (2b), respectively, react readily with NaBH4 to afford complexes [Co(PCPMe-iPr)(η2-BH4)] (4a) and [Co(PCP-tBu)(η2-BH4)] (4b) in high yields, as confirmed by IR spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, and elemental analysis. The borohydride ligand is symmetrically bound to the cobalt center in η2-fashion. These compounds are paramagnetic with effective magnetic moments of 2.0(1) and 2.1(1) μB consistent with a d7 low-spin system corresponding to one unpaired electron. None of these complexes reacted with CO2 to give formate complexes. For structural and reactivity comparisons, we prepared the analogous Ni(II) borohydride complex [Ni(PCPMe-iPr)(η2-BH4)] (5) via two different synthetic routes. One utilizes [Ni(PCPMe-iPr)Cl] (3) and NaBH4, the second one makes use of the hydride complex [Ni(PCPMe-iPr)H] (6) and BH3·THF. In both cases, 5 is obtained in high yields. In contrast to 4a and 4b, the borohydride ligand is asymmetrically bound to the nickel center but still in an η2-mode. [Ni(PCPMe-iPr)(η2-BH4)] (5) loses readily BH3 at elevated temperatures in the presence of NEt3 to form 6. Complexes 5 and 6 are both diamagnetic and were characterized by a combination of 1H, 13C{1H}, and 31P{1H} NMR, IR spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. Additionally, the structure of these compounds was established by X-ray crystallography. Complexes 5 and 6 react with CO2 to give the formate complex [Ni(PCPMe-iPr)(OC(C=O)H] (7). The extrusion of BH3 from [Co(PCPMe-iPr)(η2-BH4)] (4a) and [Ni(PCPMe-iPr)(η2-BH4)] (5) with the aid of NH3 to yield the respective hydride complexes [Co(PCPMe-iPr)H] and [Ni(PCPMe-iPr)H] (6) and BH3NH3 was investigated by DFT calculations showing that formation of the Ni hydride is thermodynamically favorable, whereas the formation of the Co(II) hydride, in agreement with the experiment, is unfavorable. The electronic structures and the bonding of the borohydride ligand in [Co(PCPMe-iPr)(η2-BH4)] (4a) and [Ni(PCPMe-iPr)(η2-BH4)] (5) were established by DFT computations.

Abstract
Reaction of the pincer hydride complex ((tBu)PCP)Ni(H) [(tBu)PCP = 2,6-C(6)H(3)(CH(2)P(t)Bu(2))(2)] with BH(3)·thf in THF at 190 K generates the corresponding borohydride complex ((tBu)PCP)Ni(BH(4)). The kinetically stable (but thermodynamically unstable) species undergoes reversible borane loss. The related fluoride complex ((tBu)PCP)Ni(F) shows the same reactivity towards BF(3)·Et(2)O, producing ((tBu)PCP)Ni(BF(4)) as the main final product. The processes were followed through multinuclear NMR spectroscopy and DFT calculations, at the M06//6-31+G(d,p) level of theory.

Abstract
The effect of chelating phosphines was tested on the structure and pH-dependent stability of nickel-cysteine binding. (1,2-Bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane (dppe) and 1,1,1-tris[(diphenylphosphino)methyl]ethane (triphos) were used with three different cysteine derivatives (L-cysteine, Cys; L-cysteine ethyl ester, CysEt; cystamine, CysAm) to prepare complexes of the form (dppe)NiCysR(n+) and (triphos)NiCysR(n+) (n = 0 for Cys; n = 1 for CysEt and CysAm). Similar 31P {1H} NMR spectra for all (dppe)NiCysRn+ confirmed their square-planar P2NiSN coordination spheres. The structure of [(dppe)NiCysAm]PF6 was also confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods. The (triphos)NiCysAm+ and (triphos)NiCysEt+ complexes were fluxional at room temperature by 31P NMR. Upon cooling to -80 degrees C, all gave spectra consistent with a P2NiSN coordination sphere with the third phosphorus uncoordinated. Temperature-dependent 31P NMR spectra showed that a trans P-Ni-S pi interaction controlled the scrambling of the coordinated triphos. In aqueous media, (dppe)NiCys was protonated at pH approximately 4-5, leading to possible formation of a nickel-cysteinethiol and eventual cysteine loss at pH < 3. The importance of N-terminus cysteine in such complexes was demonstrated by preparing (dppe)NiCys-bead and trigonal-bipyramidal Tp*NiCys-bead complexes, where Cys-bead represents cysteine anchored to polystyrene synthesis beads and Tp*- = hydrotris(3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl)borate. Importantly, results with these heterogeneous systems demonstrated the selectivity of these nickel centers for cysteine over methionine and serine and most specifically for N-terminus cysteine. The role of Ni-S pi bonding in nickel-cysteine geometries will be discussed, including how these results suggest a mechanism for the movement of electron density from nickel onto the backbone of coordinated cysteine.

Abstract
The iron(II) hydride dimers [L(R)Fe(μ-H)(2)FeL(R)] (L(Me) = 2,4-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenylimino) pent-3-yl; L(tBu) = 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenylimino)hept-4-yl) abstract hydrocarbyl groups from BR'(3) (R' = Et, Ph) to give L(R)FeR' and L(R)Fe(μ-H)(2)BR'(2). Mechanistic studies with R = R' = Me are consistent with a process in which the hyride dimer opens one Fe-H bond, and subsequent B-H bond formation is concerted with dissociation of an Fe-H unit. Cleavage of boron-carbon bonds is likely to proceed at least in part from transient quaternary borate anions. In a separate bond-breaking reaction, L(Me)Fe(μ-H)(2)BEt(2) reacts with N(2)H(4) to eject H(2) from the bridging hydrides and cleave the N-N bond in the diaminoborate complex L(Me)Fe(μ-NH(2))(2)BEt(2). These novel bond-breaking reactions are facilitated by the low coordination number at the iron(II) center.
