Abstract
This study, which aims to identify atypical platforms for the reduction of dioxygen, describes the reaction of O2 with two distibines, namely, 4,5-bis(diphenylstibino)-2,7-di-tert-butyl-9,9-dimethylxanthene and 4,5-bis(diphenylstibino)-2,7-di-tert-butyl-9,9-dimethyldihydroacridine, in the presence of an ortho-quinone such as phenanthraquinone. The reaction proceeds by oxidation of the two antimony atoms to the + V state in concert with reductive cleavage of the O2 molecule. As confirmed by 18O labeling experiments, the two resulting oxo units combine with the ortho-quinone to form an α,α,β,β-tetraolate ligand that bridges the two antimony(V) centers. This process, which has been studied both experimentally and computationally, involves the formation of asymmetric, mixed-valent derivatives featuring a stibine as well as a catecholatostiborane formed by oxidative addition of the quinone to only one of the antimony centers. Under aerobic conditions, the catecholatostiborane moiety reacts with O2 to form a semiquinone/peroxoantimony intermediate, as supported by NMR spectroscopy in the case of the dimethyldihydroacridine derivative. These intermediates swiftly evolve into the symmetrical bis(antimony(V)) α,α,β,β-tetraolate complexes via low barrier processes. Finally, the controlled protonolysis and reduction of the bis(antimony(V)) α,α,β,β-tetraolate complex based on the 9,9-dimethylxanthene platform have been investigated and shown to regenerate the starting distibine and the ortho-quinone. More importantly, these last reactions also produce two equivalents of water as the product of O2 reduction.

Abstract
Salt elimination reactions between organopnictogen(III) dichlorides, RPnCl2 [R1 = 2,6-(Me2NCH2)2C6H3, Pn = Sb (1), Bi (2); R2 = 2,6-{MeN(CH2CH2)2NCH2}2C6H3, Pn = Sb (3), Bi (4); R3 = 2,6-{O(CH2CH2)2NCH2}2C6H3, Pn = Sb (5), Bi (6)] and 2 equivalents of KSC6H3Me2-2,6 afforded the isolation of a series of new NCN-chelated monoorganopnictogen(III) bis(arylthiolates), RPn(SC6H3Me2-2,6)2 [R1, Pn = Sb (7), Bi (8); R2, Pn = Sb (9), Bi (10); R3, Pn = Sb (11), Bi (12)]. Compounds 7 and 8 are unstable upon exposure to a dry O2 atmosphere and their aerobic decomposition yields the monoorganopnictogen(III) oxides, cyclo-[2,6-(Me2NCH2)2C6H3Pn(μ-O)]2 [Pn = Sb (13), Bi (14)] with concomitant formation of the corresponding disulfide, ArS-SAr (Ar = C6H3Me2-2,6). The oxidative addition of elemental sulfur or selenium to 7 undergoes a similar reaction path and gives stable heterocyclic species cyclo-[2,6-(Me2NCH2)2C6H3Sb(μ-E)]2 [E = S (15), Se (16)]. The reaction of 12 with I2 (1 : 1 molar ratio) gives the diiodide [2,6-{O(CH2CH2)2NCH2}2C6H3]BiI2 (17), along with the S-S oxidative coupling by-product, ArS-SAr. The use of an excess of iodine affords the crystallization of a 2 : 1 iodine adduct of 17 (17·0.5I2), built through halogen bonding. All new compounds were characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy and ESI-MS as well as single crystal X-ray diffraction (except compounds 9 and 10).

Abstract
The first trivalent and pentavalent tricarbabismatranes were synthesized by the reaction of N(CH2{2-LiC6H4})3 with BiCl3 and subsequent reaction with XeF2, respectively. The trivalent bismatrane was easily oxidized by air, while the pentavalent bismatrane difluoride was relatively stable to air. A similar pentavalent bismatrance dichloride was prone to C-Cl bond reductive elimination even at room temperature.

Abstract
The synthesis, transformation, and application in catalysis of triphenyllead hydroperoxide, the first dioxygen lead complex, are described. Triphenyllead hydroperoxide is characterized by 207Pb nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction, revealing the first one-dimensional (1D) coordination peroxo polymer. Photolytic isomorphous transformation of Ph3PbOOH yields a mixed hydroxo/superoxo crystalline structure, the first nonalkali superoxo crystalline metal salt, which is stable up to 100 °C. Upon further photolysis, another isomorphous transformation of the superoxide to hydroxide is observed. These are the first single-crystal-to-single-crystal hydroperoxide-to-superoxide and then to hydroxide transformations reported to date. Photolysis of triphenyllead hydroperoxide yields two forms of superoxide-doped crystalline structures that are distinguished by widely different characteristic relaxation times. The use of Ph3PbOOH as an easy-to-handle solid two-electron oxidant for the highly enantioselective epoxidation of olefins is described.

Abstract
The isolation of simple, fundamentally important, and highly reactive organometallic compounds remains among the most challenging tasks in synthetic chemistry. The detailed characterization of such compounds is key to the discovery of novel bonding scenarios and reactivity. The dimethylbismuth cation, [BiMe2 (SbF6 )] (1), has been isolated and characterized. Its reaction with BiMe3 gives access to an unprecedented dative bond, a Bi→Bi donor-acceptor interaction. The exchange of methyl groups (arguably the simplest hydrocarbon moiety) between different metal atoms is among the most principal types of reactions in organometallic chemistry. The reaction of 1 with BiMe3 enables an SE 2(back)-type methyl exchange, which is, for the first time, investigated in detail for isolable, (pseudo-)homoleptic main-group compounds.

Abstract
Two new bismuth(III) complexes, [BiL1Cl2] (1) and [BiL2Cl2] (2), in which L1 is (2-hydroxy-4-6-di-tert-butylbenzyl-2-pyridylmethyl)amine and L2 is 2,4-diiodo-6-((pyridine-2-ylmethylamino)methyl)phenol, were synthesized and characterized by elemental and conductivity analyses, atomic absorption spectrometry, infrared and 1H NMR spectroscopies. The molecular structure of 1 reveals that the NN'O ligand forms a 1:1 complex with bismuth through coordination via the nitrogen of the aliphatic amine, the nitrogen of the pyridine ring and the oxygen of the phenolate. The coordination sphere is completed with two chloride anions in a distorted square pyramidal geometry. Bismuth exhibits the same coordination mode in compound 2. The cytotoxic activity of 1 and 2 was investigated in a chronic myelogenous leukemia cell line. The complexes are approximately three times more potent than the corresponding free ligands, with the IC50 values 0.30 and 0.38 μM for complex 1 and 2, respectively. To address the cellular mechanisms underlying cell demise, apoptosis was quantified by flow cytometry analysis. From 0.1 μM, both complexes induce apoptosis and there is a remarkable concentration-dependent increase in the population of cells in apoptosis. The complexes were also evaluated against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Both inhibited the bacterial growth in a concentration-dependent way, with remarkable activity in some of the tested strains, for example, complex 2 was more active than its free ligand against all bacterial strains and approximately fourteen times more potent against S. dysenteriae and S. typhimurium.

Abstract
A new tripodal C-anionic ligand, 2-{bis(benzothiazolyl)(methoxy)methyl}phenyl (L), was stably generated by the reaction of the ligand precursor (L'), the corresponding bromide (2-BrC6H4)(MeO)C(C7H4NS)2 (C7H4NS = 2-benzothiazolyl), with nBuLi at -104 °C in the presence of TMEDA (N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine). The ligand lithium salt reacted with BiCl3 to give a 2 : 1 complex L2BiCl. A 1 : 1 complex LBiCl2 was obtained in good yield by the redistribution reaction between L2BiCl and BiCl3. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the ligand L coordinated in an expected κ3-C,N,N' coordination mode in LBiCl2, while it coordinated in κ3-C,N,O and κ2-C,O coordination modes in L2BiCl. The ligand precursor reacted with BiX3 (X = Cl, Br) to give 1 : 1 complexes L'BiX3 and was found to act as a neutral tripodal C(π),N,N-ligand.

Abstract
Naph2Sb21 was synthesized by a reaction of 1,8-dilithionaphthalene NaphLi2 with SbCl3 and its solid state structure is reported on. 1 shows intermolecular interactions in the solid state, which were studied by quantum chemical calculations with dispersion corrected density functional theory, supermolecular ab initio approaches and symmetry adapted perturbation theory. The same methods were employed to compare the solid state interactions in the crystal of 1 to those in real (for E = P) and hypothetical (for E = As and Bi) crystal structures of Naph2E2. Dispersion interactions were found to provide the most important stabilising contribution in all cases, seconded by electrostatic attraction between pnictogen atoms and π-systems of neighbouring naphthyl groups.

Abstract
Bis(amidodimethyl)disiloxane ligands derived from O{SiMe2N(H)R}2 (abbreviated as (NONR)H2) are a stable support for neutral and cationic bismuth compounds. Attempts to extend the series Bi(NONR)Cl (R = Ar = 2,6-iPr2C6H3; R = tBu) to include compounds where R = Ar' = 2,6-Me2C6H3 were complicated by concomitant formation of the bimetallic compound {Bi(NONAr')}2(μ-NONAr'). Compounds containing [Bi(NONR)]+ cations were obtained from reactions with group 13 chlorides MCl3 (M = Al, Ga). X-ray crystallographic analysis showed intermolecular interactions with the [MnCl(3n+1)] anion.

Abstract
A set of (3,3')-bis(1-Ph-2-R-1H-2,1-benzazaborole) compounds, in which R=tBu (Bab-tBu)2 , R=Dipp (Bab-Dipp)2 or R=tBu and Dipp (Bab-Dipp)(Bab-tBu), was synthesized and fully characterized using 1 H, 11 B, 13 C, and 15 N NMR spectroscopy as well as single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The central HC(sp3 )-C(sp3 )H bond with restricted rotation at the junction of both 1H-2,1-benzazaborole rings displayed an intriguing reactivity. It was demonstrated that this bond is easily mesolytically cleaved using alkali metals to form the respective aromatic 1Ph-2R-1H-2,1-benzazaborolyl anions M+ (THF)n (Bab-tBu)- (M=Li, Na, K) and K+ (THF)n (Bab-Dipp)- . Furthermore, the central HC(sp3 )-C(sp3 )H bond of bis(1H-2,1-benzazaborole)s is also homolytically cleaved either by heating or photochemical means, giving corresponding 1Ph-2R-1H-2,1-benzazaborolyl radicals (Bab-tBu). and (Bab-Dipp). , which rapidly self-terminate. Nevertheless, their formation was unambiguously established by NMR analysis of the reaction mixtures containing products of the self-termination of the radicals after heating or irradiation. (Bab-Dipp). radical was also characterized using EPR spectroscopy. Importantly, it turned out that the essentially non-polarized HC(sp3 )-C(sp3 )H bond in (Bab-tBu)2 is also cleaved heterolytically with 2 equiv of MeLi, giving the mixture of Li+ (SOL)n (Bab-tBu)- (SOL=THF or Et2 O) and lithium methyl-substituted borate complex Li+ (SOL)n (Bab-tBu-Me)- in a diastereoselective fashion.

Abstract
The reaction of N,C-intramolecularly coordinated organoantimony(iii) and organobismuth(iii) compounds LMCl2 (M = Sb () or Bi () and L = [o-(CH[double bond, length as m-dash]N-2,6-iPr2C6H3)C6H4]) with phenyllithium in a 1 : 1 or 1 : 2 molar ratio gave compounds LM(Ph)Cl (M = Sb () or Bi ()) and LMPh2 (M = Sb () or Bi ()) in moderate to good yields. Compound could also be prepared by the treatment of the lithium compound LLi with in situ prepared PhSbCl2. Oxidation of the antimony(iii) compounds , and with one equivalent of SO2Cl2 proceeded smoothly with formation of organoantimony(v) compounds LSbCl4 (), LSb(Ph)Cl3 () and LSbPh2Cl2 () in nearly quantitative yields. Compounds are yellowish solids that are stable for a long time even in the presence of air. In contrast, only organobismuth(iii) compounds and could be successfully oxidized using SO2Cl2 to give compounds LBi(Ph)Cl3 () and LBiPh2Cl2 (). Compound is stable, but compound readily decomposed in solution and could not be isolated and stored for a longer period. All attempts to prepare compound LBiCl4 by the oxidation of with SO2Cl2 failed and resulted only in a mixture of products. All studied compounds were characterized by electrospray ionization (ESI) mass spectrometry, and (1)H and (13)C NMR spectroscopy. The molecular structures of , and were unambiguously established using single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis.

Abstract
Reaction of [Cp(2)MoH(2)] with bismuth allyloxide, [Bi{OCH(CH(3))CH==CH(2)}(3)], gave rise to an extended octanuclear complex wherein two cyclic Mo(2)Bi(2) units composed of four Mo-Bi bonds are linked by a Bi-Bi bond. The fact that the construction of such an assembly could be accomplished only in the case of a monomethylation of the parent allyl residue demonstrates a subtle substituent effect.

Abstract
The reaction of RH (1) with Hg(OAc)(2), in EtOH, gave the acetate RHgOAc (2) [R = 2,6-[O(CH(2)CH(2))(2)NCH(2)](2)C(6)H(3)]. The corresponding RHgCl (3) was obtained from 2 and LiCl. The reaction of 3 with TeCl(4) (1:1 molar ratio), in anhydrous 1,4-dioxane, resulted in the transfer of the organic ligand from mercury to tellurium and the isolation of the unexpected ionic compounds [RTe](2)[Hg(2)Cl(6)] (4) and [RH(3)][HgCl(4)] (5). The molecular structures of 1-4 and 5·H(2)O were established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The acetate 2 and the chloride 3 are monomeric in solid state. In both mercury and tellurium organometallic compounds the organic group acts as an (N,C,N) "pincer" ligand. This coordination pattern provided stability for the rare [RTe](+) cation. Weak cation-anion interactions [Te···Cl 3.869(3) Å] are present between [RTe](+) and the dinuclear anion [Hg(2)Cl(6)](2-) in the crystal of 4. Theoretical calculations with DFT methods were performed for models of 3 and 4. The results show that in the cation of 4 the coordination of the nitrogen atoms play an important role for the stabilization of the structure found in the crystal whereas in 3 the coordination of the nitrogen atoms to the metal centre stabilizes to a less extent the structure found in solid state.
