Abstract
The problem of searching for low-dimensional magnetic systems has been a topical subject and has attracted attention of the chemistry and physics community for the last decade. In low-dimensional magnetic systems, magnetic ions are distributed anisotopically and form different groups such as dimers, chains, ladders, or planes. In 3D frameworks, the distances between magnetic ions are equal in all directions while in low-dimensional systems the distances within groups are different from those between groups. The main approach of searching for desired systems is a priori crystal chemical design expecting the needed distribution of transition metal ions in the resulting structure. One of the main concepts of this structural design is the incorporation of the p-element ions with stereochemically active electron pairs and ions acting as spacers in the composition. Transition metal selenite halides, substances that combine SeO32− groups and halide ions in the structure, seem to be a promising object of investigation. Up to now, there are 33 compounds that are structurally described, magnetically characterized, and empirically tested on different levels. The presented review will summarize structural peculiarities and observed magnetic properties of the known transition metal selenite halides. In addition, the known compounds will be analyzed as possible low-dimensional magnetic systems.

Abstract
Phase identification and structure characterization are important in synthetic and materials science. It is difficult to characterize the individual phases from multiphase crystalline powder samples, especially if some of the phases are unknown. This problem can be solved by combining rotation electron diffraction (RED) and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD). Four phases were identified on the same transmission electron microscopy grid from a multiphase sample in the Ni–Se–O–Cl system, and their structures were solved from the RED data. Phase 1 (NiSeO3) was found in the Inorganic Crystal Structure Database using the information from RED. Phase 2 (Ni3Se4O10Cl2) is an unknown compound, but it is isostructural to Co3Se4O10Cl2, which was recently solved by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Phase 3 (Ni5Se6O16Cl4H2) and Phase 4 (Ni5Se4O12Cl2) are new compounds. The fact that there are at least four different compounds in the as-synthesized material explains why the phase identification and structure determination could not be done by PXRD alone. The RED method makes phase identification from such multiphase powder samples much easier than would be the case using powder X-ray diffraction. The RED method also makes structure determination of submicrometre-sized crystals from multiphase samples possible.

Abstract
We report the synthesis and characterization of the new bismuth iron selenite oxochloride Bi2Fe(SeO3)2OCl3. The main feature of its crystal structure is the presence of a reasonably isolated set of spin S = 5/2 zigzag chains of corner-sharing FeO6 octahedra decorated with BiO4Cl3, BiO3Cl3, and SeO3 groups. When the temperature is lowered, the magnetization passes through a broad maximum at Tmax ≈ 130 K, which indicates the formation of a magnetic short-range correlation regime. The same behavior is demonstrated by the integral electron spin resonance intensity. The absorption is characterized by the isotropic effective factor g ≈ 2 typical for high-spin Fe(3+) ions. The broadening of ESR absorption lines at low temperatures with the critical exponent β = 7/4 is consistent with the divergence of the temperature-dependent correlation length expected for the quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnetic spin chain upon approaching the long-range ordering transition from above. At TN = 13 K, Bi2Fe(SeO3)2OCl3 exhibits a transition into an antiferromagnetically ordered state, evidenced in the magnetization, specific heat, and Mössbauer spectra. At T < TN, the (57)Fe Mössbauer spectra reveal a low saturated value of the hyperfine field Hhf ≈ 44 T, which indicates a quantum spin reduction of spin-only magnetic moment ΔS/S ≈ 20%. The determination of exchange interaction parameters using first-principles calculations validates the quasi-one-dimensional nature of magnetism in this compound.

Abstract
A new nickel tellurite oxohalide, Ni(15)Te(12)O(34)Cl(10), has been prepared by chemical vapour transport reactions and the crystal structure was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The compound crystallizes in the triclinic space group P1[combining macron] with the pseudomonoclinic cell parameters a = 10.3248(6) Å, b = 10.3249(6) Å, c = 11.6460(8) Å, α = 73.782(6)°, β = 73.782(6)°, γ = 63.51(2)°, Z = 1, R(1) = 0.0264. The Ni(2+) ions have octahedral [NiO(6)] and [NiO(4)Cl(2)] coordinations, the Te(4+) ions have one-sided [TeO(3)] and [TeO(4)] coordinations. The crystal structure can be described as consisting of nickel oxide ribbons extending along (001) that are connected by corner sharing [TeO(3)] and [TeO(4)] groups to build the open framework structure. The chlorine atoms and the Te-lone pairs are facing voids in the oxide framework. The new compound undergoes two successive antiferromagnetic ordering transitions at ∼50 K and ∼10 K. The Curie-Weiss temperature obtained from detailed evaluation of the high-temperature magnetic susceptibilities is positive indicating predominant ferromagnetic superexchange interactions between the Ni magnetic moments.

Abstract
Two new nickel(II) molybdenum(VI) selenium(IV) and tellurium(IV) oxides generally formulated as Ni3(Mo2O8)(XO3) (X = Se, Te) have been synthesized by solid-state reactions of NiO, MoO3, and SeO2 (or TeO2). Both compounds feature 3D network structures built of [Mo4O16]8- tetranuclear cluster units and 2D nickel(II) selenite or tellurite layers. The nickel(II) selenite layer in Ni3(Mo2O8)(SeO3) is formed by [Ni6O22]32- hexanuclear clusters interconnected by selenite groups whereas the thick nickel(II) tellurite layer in Ni3(Mo2O8)(TeO3) is constructed by corrugated nickel(II) oxide chains bridged by the tellurite groups. The results of magnetic property measurements indicate that there are considerable ferromagnetic interactions between nickel(II) centers in both compounds. Their optical properties and band structures have been also studied.
