The Backbone of Success of P,N-Hybrid Ligands: Some Recent Developments

Organophosphorus ligands are an invaluable family of compounds that continue to underpin important roles in disciplines such as coordination chemistry and catalysis. Their success can routinely be traced back to facile tuneability thus enabling a high degree of control over, for example, electronic and steric properties. Diphosphines, phosphorus compounds bearing two separated P^III donor atoms, are also highly valued and impart their own unique features, for example excellent chelating properties upon metal complexation. In many classical ligands of this type, the backbone connectivity has been based on all carbon spacers only but there is growing interest in embedding other donor atoms such as additional nitrogen (–NH–, –NR–) sites. This review will collate some important examples of ligands in this field, illustrate their role as ligands in coordination chemistry and highlight some of their reactivities and applications. It will be shown that incorporation of a nitrogen-based group can impart unusual reactivities and important catalytic applications.

N-Centered Tripodal Phosphine Re(V) and Tc(V) Oxo Complexes: Revisiting a [3 + 2] Mixed-Ligand Approach

N-Triphos derivatives (NP₃^R, R = alkyl, aryl) and asymmetric variants (NP₂^RX^R′, R′ = alkyl, aryl, X = OH, NR₂, NRR′) are an underexplored class of tuneable, tripodal ligands in relation to the coordination chemistry of Re and Tc for biomedical applications. Mixed-ligand approaches are a flexible synthetic route to obtain Tc complexes of differing core structures and physicochemical properties. Reaction of the NP₃^Ph ligand with the Re(V) oxo precursor [ReOCl₃(PPh₃)₂] generated the bidentate complex [ReOCl₃(κ²-NP₂^PhOH^Ar)], which possesses an unusual AA’BB’XX’ spin system with a characteristic second-order NMR lineshape that is sensitive to the bi- or tridentate nature of the coordinating diphosphine unit. The use of the asymmetric NP₂^PhOH^Ar ligand resulted in the formation of both bidentate and tridentate products depending on the presence of base. The tridentate Re(V) complex [ReOCl₂(κ³-NP₂^PhO^Ar)] has provided the basis of a new reactive “metal-fragment” for further functionalization in [3 + 2] mixed-ligand complexes. The synthesis of [3 + 2] complexes with catechol-based π-donors could also be achieved under one-pot, single-step conditions from Re(V) oxo precursors. Analogous complexes can also be synthesized from suitable ⁹⁹Tc(V) precursors, and these complexes have been shown to exhibit highly similar structural properties through spectroscopic and chromatographic analysis. However, a tendency for the {M^VO}³⁺ core to undergo hydrolysis to the {M^VO₂}⁺ core has been observed both in the case of M = Re and markedly for M = ⁹⁹Tc complexes. It is likely that controlling this pathway will be critical to the generation of further stable Tc(V) derivatives.

An N-centered tripodal heterofunctionalized phosphine ligand was used to generate a reactive “metal-fragment” based on the {M^VO}³⁺ (M = Re, ⁹⁹Tc) core for the formation of mixed-ligand [3 + 2] complexes. Characteristic lineshapes arising from an AA’BB’XX’ spin system are diagnostic of bidentate vs tridentate coordination modes of the ligand.

Low-Dimensional Architectures in Isomeric cis-PtCl2{Ph2PCH2N(Ar)CH2PPh2} Complexes Using Regioselective-N(Aryl)-Group Manipulation

The solid-state behaviour of two series of isomeric, phenol-substituted, aminomethylphosphines, as the free ligands and bound to Pt^II, have been extensively studied using single crystal X-ray crystallography. In the first library, isomeric diphosphines of the type Ph₂PCH₂N(Ar)CH₂PPh₂ [1a–e; Ar = C₆H₃(Me)(OH)] and, in the second library, amide-functionalised, isomeric ligands Ph₂PCH₂N{CH₂C(O)NH(Ar)}CH₂PPh₂ [2a–e; Ar = C₆H₃(Me)(OH)], were synthesised by reaction of Ph₂PCH₂OH and the appropriate amine in CH₃OH, and isolated as colourless solids or oils in good yield. The non-methyl, substituted diphosphines Ph₂PCH₂N{CH₂C(O)NH(Ar)}CH₂PPh₂ [2f, Ar = 3-C₆H₄(OH); 2g, Ar = 4-C₆H₄(OH)] and Ph₂PCH₂N(Ar)CH₂PPh₂ [3, Ar = 3-C₆H₄(OH)] were also prepared for comparative purposes. Reactions of 1a–e, 2a–g, or 3 with PtCl₂(η⁴-cod) afforded the corresponding square-planar complexes 4a–e, 5a–g, and 6 in good to high isolated yields. All new compounds were characterised using a range of spectroscopic (¹H, ³¹P{¹H}, FT–IR) and analytical techniques. Single crystal X-ray structures have been determined for 1a, 1b∙CH₃OH, 2f∙CH₃OH, 2g, 3, 4b∙(CH₃)₂SO, 4c∙CHCl₃, 4d∙½Et₂O, 4e∙½CHCl₃∙½CH₃OH, 5a∙½Et₂O, 5b, 5c∙¼H₂O, 5d∙Et₂O, and 6∙(CH₃)₂SO. The free phenolic group in 1b∙CH₃OH, 2f∙CH₃OH_,2g, 4b∙(CH₃)₂SO, 5a∙½Et₂O, 5c∙¼H₂O, and 6∙(CH₃)₂SO exhibits various intra- or intermolecular O–H∙∙∙X (X = O, N, P, Cl) hydrogen contacts leading to different packing arrangements.

Synthesis of platinum, palladium and rhodium complexes of α-aminophosphine ligands

α-Aminophosphine-type ligands are of interest as building blocks of transition metal complexes. This review focuses on the utilization of α-aminophosphines as monodentate and bidentate ligands in platinum, palladium and rhodium complexes. Besides the linear derivatives, the applications of cyclic α-aminophosphines as ligands are also summarized. Various aspects, such as synthesis, structure and applications, as well as the catalytic activity of these complexes are discussed.

A versatile diphosphine ligand: cis and trans chelation or bridging, with self association through hydrogen bonding

The diphosphine ligand, N,N'-bis(2-diphenylphosphinoethyl)isophthalamide, dpipa, contains two amide groups and can form cis or trans chelate complexes or cis,cis or trans,trans bridged complexes. The amide groups are likely to be involved in intramolecular or intermolecular hydrogen bonding. This combination of properties of the ligand dpipa leads to very unusual structural properties of its complexes, which often exist as mixtures of monomers and dimers in solution. In the complex [Au2(μ-dpipa)2]Cl2, the ligands adopt the trans,trans bridging mode, with linear gold(I) centers, and the amide groups hydrogen bond to the chloride anions. In [Pt2Cl4(μ-dpipa)2], the ligands adopt the cis,cis bridging mode, with square planar platinum(II) centers, and the amide groups form intermolecular hydrogen bonds to the chloride ligands to form a supramolecular one-dimensional polymer. Both the monomeric and dimeric complexes [PtMe2(dpipa)] and [Pt2Me4(μ-dpipa)2] have cis-PtMe2 units with cis chelating or cis,cis bridging dpipa ligands respectively; each forms a supramolecular dimer through hydrogen bonding between amide groups and each contains an unusual NH···Pt interaction. An attempted oxidative addition reaction with methyl iodide gave the complex [PtIMe(dpipa)], which contains trans chelating dpipa, while a reaction with bromine gave a disordered complex with approximate composition [Pt2Me3Br5(μ-dpipa)2], which contains trans,trans bridging dpipa ligands.

Tungsten coordination chemistry of 1,4-bisdiphenylphosphinobutadiyne — Synthesis of coordination macrocycles and factors controlling diyne cycloaddition

The 1:1 reaction of [W(CO)4(2-picoline)2] (1) with Ph2PCtriple bondC-Ctriple bondCPPh2 (2) led to {[cis-W(CO)4]2(µ-Ph2PC4PPh2)2} (3), in which two bis(diphenylphosphino)butadiyne ligands bridge two tetracarbonyltungsten centres. Reaction of 1 with excess 2 led to [cis-W(CO)4(Ph2PC4PPh2-κ1-P)2] (4), in which two dangling bis-phosphines are coordinated to one metal centre, and reaction of 2 with two equivalents of 1 led to {[W(2-picoline)(CO)4]2(µ-Ph2PC4PPh2)} (5), in which one ligand bridges two tungsten centres. Combination of 4 and 5 led to the trimeric complex {[cis-W(CO)4]3(µ-Ph2PC4PPh2)3} (6), in which three tetracarbonyltungsten centres are bridged by three bisdiphenylphosphinobutadiyne ligands. The dimeric complex 3 showed no reactivity towards alkyne cycloaddition; however, the trimeric complex 6 undergoes cycloaddition at moderate temperatures to form {[W(CO)4]3[µ3-C12(Ph2P)6]} (8), which contains a cyclododecatrienetriyene ring. Comparison of structural data for the template complexes 3 and 6, as well that of previously described platinum template complexes, suggests that alkyne cycloaddition reactions are favoured by proximity of the alkynyl carbons α to phosphorus in adjacent ligands.Key words: coordination chemistry, diyne, cycloaddition, templated reaction, tungsten.
