Synthesis and Characterization of Low-Coordinate Divalent Aryl Transition-Metal Halide Analogues of Grignard Reagents: Precursors for Reduction to Metal−Metal-Bonded Complexes

Bimetallic H2 Addition and Intramolecular Caryl-H Activation Mediated by an Iron-Zinc Hydride

Heteronuclear Fe(μ-H)Zn hydride Cp*Fe(1,2-Cy2PC6H4)HZnEt (3) undergoes reversible intramolecular Caryl-H reductive elimination through coupling of the cyclometalated phosphinoaryl ligand and the hydride, giving rise to a formal Fe(0)-Zn(II) species. Addition of CO intercepts this equilibrium, affording Cp*(Cy2PPh)(CO)Fe-ZnEt that features a dative Fe-Zn bond. Significantly, this system achieves bimetallic H2 addition, as demonstrated by the transformation of the monohydride Fe(μ-H)Zn to a deuterated dihydride Fe-(μ-D)2-Zn upon reaction with D2.

Tandem Mn-I Exchange and Homocoupling Processes Mediated by a Synergistically Operative Lithium Manganate

Pairing lithium and manganese(II) to form lithium manganate [Li₂ Mn(CH₂ SiMe₃ )₄ ] enables the efficient direct Mn-I exchange of aryliodides, affording transient (aryl)lithium manganate intermediates which in turn undergo spontaneous C-C homocoupling at room temperature to furnish symmetrical (bis)aryls in good yields under mild reaction conditions. The combination of EPR with X-ray crystallographic studies has revealed the mixed Li/Mn constitution of the organometallic intermediates involved in these reactions, including the homocoupling step which had previously been thought to occur via a single-metal Mn aryl species. These studies show Li and Mn working together in a synergistic manner to facilitate both the Mn-I exchange and the C-C bond-forming steps. Both steps are carefully synchronized, with the concomitant generation of the alkyliodide ICH₂ SiMe₃ during the Mn-I exchange being essential to the aryl homocoupling process, wherein it serves as an in situ generated oxidant.

Four-Coordinate Iron(II) Diaryl Compounds with Monodentate N-Heterocyclic Carbene Ligation: Synthesis, Characterization, and Their Tetrahedral-Square Planar Isomerization in Solution

The salt elimination reactions of (IPr2Me2)2FeCl2 (IPr2Me2 = 1,3-diisopropyl-4,5-dimethylimidazol-2-ylidene) with the corresponding aryl Grignard reagents afford [(IPr2Me2)2FeAr2] (Ar = Ph, 3; C6H4-p-Me, 4; C6H4-p-(t)Bu, 5; C6H3-3,5-(CF3)2, 6) in good yields. X-ray crystallographic studies revealed the presence of both tetrahedral and trans square planar isomers for 3 and 6 and the tetrahedral structures for 4 and 5. Magnetic susceptibility and (57)Fe Mössbauer spectrum measurements on the solid samples indicated the high-spin (S = 2) and intermediate-spin (S = 1) nature of the tetrahedral and square planar structures, respectively. Solution property studies, including solution magnetic susceptibility measurement, variable-temperature (1)H and (19)F NMR, and absorption spectroscopy, on 3-6, as well as an (57)Fe Mössbauer spectrum study on a frozen tetrahydrofuran solution of tetrahedral [(IPr2Me2)2(57)FePh2] suggest the coexistence of tetrahedral and trans square planar structures in solution phase. Density functional theory calculations on (IPr2Me2)2FePh2 disclosed that the tetrahedral and trans square planar isomers are close in energy and that the geometry isomerization can occur by spin-change-coupled geometric transformation on four-coordinate iron(II) center.

Isolation of a hexanuclear chromium cluster with a tetrahedral hydridic core and its catalytic behavior for ethylene oligomerization

A chromium complex [2-(NHCH2PPh2)C5H4N]CrCl3·THF2 (1) of the ligand PyNHCH2PPh2 has been synthesized, characterized, and examined for its catalytic behavior toward ethylene oligomerization. When complex 1 was treated with (i-Bu)3Al, an unprecedented divalent polyhydride chromium cluster μ,κ(1),κ(2),κ(3)-N,N,P-{[2-(NCH2PPh2)C5H4N]Cr(μ-H)}4[(μ-Cl)Cr(μ-Cl)Al(i-Bu)2Cl]2 (2) was obtained. The complex contains a Cr4H4 core, which is expected to be diamagnetic, and which remains coordinated to two additional divalent high-spin Cr atoms via bridging interactions. Two aluminate residues remain bonded to the peripheral chromium atoms. The structure, magnetism, and electronic configuration are herein discussed.

Reactions of Ar'CrCrAr' with N2O or N3(1-Ad): complete cleavage of the Cr-Cr quintuple interaction

Reaction of Ar'CrCrAr' (Ar' = C(6)H(3)-2,6-(C(6)H(3)-2,6-Pr(i)(2))(2)) with heterocumulene reagents N(2)O or N(3)(1-Ad) resulted in Ar'Cr(micro-O)(2)Cr(O)Ar' or Ar'Cr(micro(2):eta(1),eta(3)-N(3)(1-Ad))CrAr' which have no metal-metal bonding.

Substituent effects in formally quintuple-bonded ArCrCrAr compounds (Ar = terphenyl) and related species

The effects of different terphenyl ligand substituents on the quintuple Cr-Cr bonding in arylchromium(I) dimers stabilized by bulky terphenyl ligands (Ar) were investigated. A series of complexes, ArCrCrAr (1-4; Ar = C6H2-2,6-(C6H3-2,6-iPr2)2-4-X, where X = H, SiMe3, OMe, and F), was synthesized and structurally characterized. Their X-ray crystal structures display similar trans-bent C(ipso)CrCrC(ipso) cores with short Cr-Cr distances that range from 1.8077(7) to 1.8351(4) A. There also weaker Cr-C interactions [2.294(1)-2.322(2) A] involving an C(ipso) of one of the flanking aryl rings. The data show that the changes induced in the Cr-Cr bond length by the different substituents X in the para positions of the central aryl ring of the terphenyl ligand are probably a result of packing rather than electronic effects. This is in agreement with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which predict that the model compounds (4-XC6H4)CrCr(C6H4-4-X) (X = H, SiMe3, OMe, and F) have similar geometries in the gas phase. Magnetic measurements in the temperature range of 2-300 K revealed temperature-independent paramagnetism in 1-4. UV-visible and NMR spectroscopic data indicated that the metal-metal-bonded solid-state structures of 1-4 are retained in solution. Reduction of (4-F3CAr')CrCl (4-F3CAr' = C6H2-2,6-(C6H3-2,6-iPr2)2-4-CF3) with KC8 gave non-Cr-Cr-bonded fluorine-bridged dimer {(4-F3CAr')Cr(mu-F)(THF)}2 (5) as a result of activation of the CF3 moiety. The monomeric, two-coordinate complexes [(3,5-iPr2Ar*)Cr(L)] (6, L = THF; 7, L = PMe3; 3,5-iPr2Ar* = C6H1-2,6-(C6H-2,4,6-iPr3)2-3,5-iPr2) were obtained with use of the larger 3,5-Pri2-Ar* ligand, which prevents Cr-Cr bond formation. Their structures contain almost linearly coordinated CrI atoms, with high-spin 3d5 configurations. The addition of toluene to a mixture of (3,5-iPr2Ar*)CrCl and KC8 gave the unusual dinuclear benzyl complex [(3,5-iPr2Ar*)Cr(eta3:eta6-CH2Ph)Cr(Ar*-1-H-3,5-iPr2)] (8), in which a C-H bond from a toluene methyl group was activated. The electronic structures of 5-8 have been analyzed with the aid of DFT calculations.
