Gondola-Shaped Luminescent Tetrarhenium Metallacycles with Crown-Ether-like Multiple Recognition Sites

Self-Assembly of Rhenium(I) Double-Stranded Helicate and Mesocate from Flexible Ditopic Benzimidazolyl/Naphthanoimidazolyl N-Donor and Rigid Bis-Chelating Hydroxyphenylbenzimidazolyl N∩OH-Donor Ligands: Synthesis, Characterization, and Photophysical and B-DNA Docking Studies

The self-assembly of three rheniumtricarbonyl core-based supramolecular coordination complexes (SCCs), fac-[Re(CO)3(μ-L)(μ-L')Re(CO)3] (1-3) was carried out using Re2(CO)10, rigid bis-chelating ligand (HO∩N-Ph-N∩OH (L1) (where HO∩N = 2-hydroxyphenylbenzimidazolyl), and flexible ditopic N-donor ligands (L2 = bis(3-((1H-benzoimidazol-1-yl)methyl)-2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)methane, L3 = bis(3-((1H-naphtho[2,3-d]imidazol-1-yl)methyl)-2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)methane, L4 = bis(4-(naphtho[2,3-d]imidazol-1-yl-methyl)phenyl)methane) via a one-pot solvothermal approach. In the solid state, the dinuclear SCCs adopt heteroleptic double-stranded helicate and meso-helicate architectures. The supramolecular structures of the complexes are retained in the solution based on the 1H NMR and electrospray ionization (ESI)-mass analysis. The spectral and photophysical properties of the complexes were studied both experimentally and using time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations. All of the supramolecules exhibited emission in both solution and solid states. Theoretical studies were conducted to determine the chemical reactivity parameters, molecular electrostatic potential surface plots, natural population, and Hirshfeld analysis for complexes 1-3. Additionally, molecular docking studies were carried out for complexes 1-3 with B-DNA.

Rhenium(I)-Based Heteroleptic Pentagonal Toroid-Shaped Metallocavitands: Self-Assembly and Molecular Recognition Studies

A family of neutral, heteroleptic, dinuclear M₂LL'-type pentagonal toroid-shaped metallomacrocycles (1-8) were synthesized using flexible ditopic N donors (Lⁿ = L¹-L²), rigid bis-chelating ligands (H₂-L' = H₂-E), and Re₂(CO)₁₀ in a one-pot solvothermal self-assembly approach. The ligands and the metallomacrocycles were characterized using ATR-IR, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance, ultraviolet-visible, and emission spectroscopy methods. The molecular structures of 1, 2, 4, 6, and 7 were confirmed by an X-ray diffraction study and are similar to those of calix[5]arene. The cyclic inner cavities of the metallomacrocycles accommodate toluene/mesitylene/acetone/chlorobenzene as guest molecules that are stabilized by cumulative C-H···π and π···π interactions with the cyclic framework of metallomacrocycle. The photophysical properties of the ligands and the metallomacrocycles were studied. The host-guest recognition properties of metallocavitands 1, 2, 7, and 8 as a model host with phenol and nitrobenzene derivatives as guest molecules were studied by emission spectroscopy methods.

Synthesis of tetranuclear rhenium(I) tricarbonyl metallacycles

Re(I) tricarbonyl complexes have received much attention due to their attractive photochemical, electrochemical, and biological properties. Beyond simple mononuclear complexes, multinuclear assemblies offer greater structural diversity and properties. Despite previous reports on the preparation of di-, tri-, or tetranuclear Re(I) tricarbonyl assemblies, the synthesis of these supramolecular structures remains challenging due to overall low yields or tedious purification protocols. Herein, the facile preparation and characterization of tetranuclear Re(I) tricarbonyl metallacycles with a square geometry is reported using a tetrazole-based ligand. The synthesis of the metallacycle was optimized using different metal precursors, solvents, temperatures, and reagent concentrations. Finally, the scope of suitable tetrazole-based ligands was explored to produce several tetranuclear Re(I) tricarbonyl-based metallacycles.

fac-Re(CO)3-based neutral heteroleptic tetrahedrons

Four new flexible ditopic nitrogen donors possessing a xylene spacer and 2-phenylbenzimidazolyl or its derivatives as a coordinating unit and one rigid bis-chelating ligand consisting of two 2-hydroxyphenylbenzimidazolyl motifs and a central phenylene spacer were synthesized and further used with Re₂(CO)₁₀ for making a new family of neutral, heteroleptic tetrahedral-shaped supramolecular coordination complexes via a one-pot approach. The new ligands and the complexes were characterized using various analytical and spectroscopic methods. The molecular structures of the complexes were determined using single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, which reveal that four rhenium cores are arranged in the vertices, and four ligands are at the edges of the tetrahedron.

Synthesis and crystal structures of two purpurin derivatives: 1,4-dihy-droxy-2-propoxyanthra-quinone and 2-but-oxy-1,4-di-hydroxy-anthra-quinone

The title compounds were obtained by deprotonation of 1,2,4-tri-hydroxy-anthra-quinone (purpurin) using sodium hydride followed by reaction with either 1-bromo-propane or 1-bromo-butane. 1,4-Dihy-droxy-2-propoxyanthra-quinone crystallizes as a 1:1 solvate from aceto-nitrile, C17H14O5·CH3CN. The anthra-quinone core of the mol-ecule is essentially planar and both hy-droxy groups participate in intra-molecular O-H⋯O (carbon-yl) hydrogen bonds. The propyl chain is angled slightly above the plane of the anthra-quinone moiety with a maximum deviation of 0.247 (2) Å above the plane for the terminal carbon atom. In contrast, 2-but-oxy-1,4-di-hydroxy-anthra-quinone, C18H16O5, crystallizes from nitro-methane with two independent mol-ecules in the asymmetric unit. The anthra-quinone core of each independent mol-ecule is essentially planar and both hy-droxy groups on both mol-ecules participate in intra-molecular O-H⋯O(carbon-yl) hydrogen bonds. The butyl chain in one mol-ecule is also angled slightly above the plane of the anthra-quinone moiety, with a maximum deviation of 0.833 (5) Å above the plane for the terminal carbon atom. In contrast, the butyl group on the second mol-ecule is twisted out of the plane of the anthra-quinone core with a torsion angle of 65.1 (3)°, resulting in a maximum deviation of 1.631 (5) Å above the plane for the terminal carbon atom.

Rhenium-Based Molecular Trap as an Evanescent Wave Infrared Chemical Sensing Medium for the Selective Determination of Amines in Air

An evanescent wave infrared chemical sensor was developed to selectively detect volatile amines with heterocyclic or phenyl ring. To achieve this goal, a rhenium-based metallacycle with a "molecular-trap" structure was designed and synthesized as host molecules to selectively trap amines with heterocyclic or phenyl ring through Re-amine and π-π interactions. To explore the trapping properties of the material, a synthesized Re-based molecular trap was treated on an IR sensing element, and wide varieties of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were examined to establish the selectivity for detection of amines. Based on the observed IR intensities, the Re-based molecular trap favors interaction with amines as evidenced by the variation of absorption bands of the Re molecular trap. With extra π-π interaction force, molecules, such as pyridine and benzylamine, could be detected. After optimization of the parameters for IR sensing, a rapid response in the detection of pyridine was observed, and the linear ranges were generally up to 10 mg/L with a detection limit around 5.7 μg/L. In the presence of other VOCs, the recoveries in detection of pyridine were all close to 100%.

Self-assembly of oxamidato bridged ester functionalised dirhenium metallastirrups: synthesis, characterisation and cytotoxicity studies

Hetero-topic self-assembly of Re₂(CO)₁₀ with oxamide ligands and ester-functionalised flexible ditopic-tectons afforded dinuclear metallacycles resembling a stirrup. The metallastirrups showed promising cytotoxic activity against few cancer cell lines in vitro.

One-step orthogonal-bonding approach to the self-assembly of neutral rhenium-based metallacycles: synthesis, structures, photophysics, and sensing applications

Self-assembled metallacycles offer structural diversity and interesting properties based on their unique frameworks and host-guest chemistry. As a result, the design and synthesis of these materials has attracted significant research interest. This Account describes our comprehensive investigations of an effective orthogonal-bonding approach for the self-assembly of neutral Re-based metallacycles. We discuss the various types of assemblies that can be created based on the nuclearity of the luminophore, including bimetallic materials, rectangles, cages, and calixarenes. This approach permits the preparation of a rectangular molecule, rather than two molecular squares, in excellent yields. We extended this strategy to the high yield synthesis of a series of Re-based metallacycles with different shapes. With the rich spectroscopic and luminescence properties, Re(I) metallacycles provide an excellent platform for studies of host-guest interactions. When possible, we also present potential applications of the luminescent Re-based metallosupramolecular assemblies. The orthogonal-bonding approach involves the simultaneous introduction of two ligands: a bis-chelating ligand to coordinate to two equatorial sites of two fac-(CO)(3)Re cores and a monotopic or ditopic nitrogen-donor ligand to the remaining orthogonal axial site. Furthermore, by the appropriate choice of the predesigned organic ligands with various backbones and connectivity information and fac-Re(CO)(3) metal centers, we could also design other novel functional metallacycles including rotors, gondolas, cages, triangles, and metallacalixarenes in high yields. The incorporation of flexible ligands into the Re(I) metallacycles allows us to introduce various conformation states and novel structures. As a result, these structures acquire new functions, such as adaptive recognition properties. For example, we assembled Re(I)-based metallacyclic rotors via a one-step process. These rotors, which contain a para-phenylene unit that rapidly rotates within the metallacycles, are prototypes of a neutral altitudinal rotor. Most of the metallacycles are luminescent. The ability to chemically modify the organic ligands offers opportunities to create structural diversity and to tune the photophysical properties of these Re(I) metallacycles efficiently. Several strategies for increasing emission quantum yields and excited-state lifetimes and tuning the colors in Re(I) metallacycles are available. The cyclometalated ligands in Re(I) metallacycles improve excited state lifetimes and quantum yields, and these C-H bond-activated metallacycles are considerably more emissive than their non-C-H bond-activated analogues. The introduction of crown-ether-like recognition sites into neutral gondola-shaped metallacycles that selectively recognize metal ions also enhanced emission. Rhenium-based rectangular boxes, synthesized via a simple one-step route, contain a large and tunable hydrophobic inner cavity, which selectively recognizes benzene molecules. Such structures were the best host for benzene reported to date. In addition, we designed and synthesized novel neutral metallacalixarenes with tunable size, cavity, color, and functionality. These structures are efficient hosts for the recognition of planar aromatic guests.

Self-assembly of a triangle-shaped, hexaplatinum-incorporated, supramolecular amphiphile in solution and at interfaces

The self-assembly and characterization of a novel supramolecular amphiphile built from a new 60 degree amphiphilic precursor that incorporates hydrophilic platinum(II) metals and hydrophobic dioctadecyloxy chains is reported. The amphiphilic macrocycle and its precursor compound have been characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, ESI-MS, and other standard techniques. The coacervate morphology of the amphiphile at the liquid-liquid interface has been studied by using confocal optical microscopy and in situ Raman spectroscopy. The self-assembly of the amphiphilic macrocycle at the air-water interface has been investigated through Langmuir-trough techniques. The study indicates the possible formation of surface micelle-like aggregates. The disparity between the experimental molecular areas and those derived from molecular models support the idea of aggregation. AFM images of the surface aggregates show the formation of a flat topology with arbitrary ridgelike patterns. Reasonable molecular-packing arrangements are proposed to explain the molecular organization within the observed structures.

Coordination-driven self-assembly of functionalized supramolecular metallacycles

Coordination-driven self-assembly that combines rigid ditopic Pt(II) metal acceptors and bis-pyridyl organic donors provides a facile means of synthesizing well-defined metallacycles of predetermined size and geometry. Functionalization of the component acceptor or donor building blocks allows for the preparation of multifunctional supramolecular materials wherein the stoichiometry and position of individual functional moieties can be precisely controlled. The design, self-assembly, and applications of polyfunctional supramolecules incorporating functional moieties with host-guest, photonic, materials, and self-organizational properties is discussed.
