Spectroscopic and computational studies of a series of high-spin Ni(II) thiolate complexes

Ethereal Hydroperoxides: Powerful Reagents for S-Oxygenation of Bridging Thiophenolate Functions

S-Oxygenation of thiophenolate bridges by ethereal hydroperoxides was studied. [Ni^II₂L^S(PhCO₂)]⁺ (1), where L^S = macrocyclic aminethiolate supporting ligand, is S-oxygenated readily in a mixed methanol/acetonitrile solution with ether/dioxygen at room temperature in the presence of daylight. The reactions were found to depend strongly on the choice of the ether. Uptake of two O atoms occurs in dioxane to give a mixed thiolate/sulfinate complex [Ni^II₂L^SO₂(PhCO₂)]⁺ (2) containing the rare five-membered Ni(μ_1,1-S)(μ_1,2-OS)Ni core. In tetrahydrofuran, four O atoms are taken up by 1 to generate the bis(sulfinate) species [Ni^II₂L^SO₄(PhCO₂)]⁺ (3). A mono-S-oxygenated sulfenate intermediate can be detected by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. The oxygenation reactions proceed in high yields without complex disintegration and invariably provide μ_1,2-bridging sulfinates as established by spectroscopy (IR and UV/vis), X-ray crystallography, and accompanying density functional theory calculations. The oxygenation of the S atoms has a strong impact on the electronic structures of the nickel complexes. The monosulfinate complex 2 has an S = 2 ground state resulting from moderate ferromagnetic exchange coupling interactions (J = +15.7 cm^-1; H = -2JS₁S₂), while an antiferromagnetic exchange interaction in 3 shows the presence of a ground state with spin S = 0 (J = -0.56 cm^-1).

Iron(II)-alkoxide and -aryloxide complexes of a tris(thioether)borate ligand: synthesis, molecular structures, and implications on the origin of instability of their iron(II)-catecholate counterpart

The phenyltris[(tert-butylthio)methyl]borate ligand, [PhTt^tBu], has been studied extensively as a platform for coordination, organometallic, and bioinorganic chemistry, especially with 3d metals. While [PhTt^tBu]Co(3,5-DBCatH) (3,5-DBCatH is 3,5-di-tert-butylcatecholate), a Co^II-monoanionic catecholate complex, was successfully isolated to model the active site of cobalt(II)-substituted homoprotocatechuate 2,3-dioxygenase (Co-HPCD) [Wang et al. (2019). Inorg. Chim. Acta, 488, 49-55], its iron(II) counterpart, [PhTt^tBu]Fe(3,5-DBCatH), was not accessible via similar synthetic routes. Switching the nucleophile from catecholate to alkoxide or aryloxide, however, led to the successful isolation of three highly air-sensitive Fe^II-alkoxide and -aryloxide complexes, namely, (triphenylmethoxo){tris[(tert-butylsulfanyl)methyl]phenylborato-κ³S,S',S''}iron(II), [Fe(C₂₁H₃₈BS₃)(C₁₉H₁₅O)], (2), (2,6-dimethylphenolato){tris[(tert-butylsulfanyl)methyl]phenylborato-κ³S,S',S''}iron(II), [Fe(C₂₁H₃₈BS₃)(C₈H₉O)], (3), and bis{μ-tris[(tert-butylsulfanyl)methyl]phenylborato-κ³S,S':S''}bis[(phenolato-κO)iron(II)] toluene disolvate, [Fe₂(C₂₁H₃₈BS₃)₂(C₆H₅O)₂]·2C₇H₈, (4). In the solid state, compounds (2) and (3) are monomeric, with [PhTt^tBu] acting as a tridentate ligand. In contrast, compound (4) crystallizes as a dimeric complex, wherein each [PhTt^tBu] ligand binds to an iron centre with two thioethers and binds to the other iron centre with the third thioether. The molecular structures of (2)-(4) demonstrate a diversity in the binding modes of [PhTt^tBu] and highlight its potential use for assembling multinuclear complexes. In addition, the successful isolation of (2)-(4), as well as the structural information of a [PhTt^tBu] modification product, namely, bis{μ-tris[(tert-butylsulfanyl)methyl](2-oxidophenolato)borato-κO,O',S,S':O'}dicobalt(II), [Co₂(C₂₁H₃₇BO₂S₃)₂], (5), obtained from the reaction of [PhTt^tBu]CoCl with potassium monoanionic catecholate, shed light on the origin of the instability of [PhTt^tBu]Fe(3,5-DBCatH).

Experimental and DFT Investigations Reveal the Influence of the Outer Coordination Sphere on the Vibrational Spectra of Nickel-Substituted Rubredoxin, a Model Hydrogenase Enzyme

Nickel-substituted rubredoxin (NiRd) is a functional enzyme mimic of hydrogenase, highly active for electrocatalytic and solution-phase hydrogen generation. Spectroscopic methods can provide valuable insight into the catalytic mechanism, provided the appropriate technique is used. In this study, we have employed multiwavelength resonance Raman spectroscopy coupled with DFT calculations on an extended active-site model of NiRd to probe the electronic and geometric structures of the resting state of this system. Excellent agreement between experiment and theory is observed, allowing normal mode assignments to be made on the basis of frequency and intensity analyses. Both metal-ligand and ligand-centered vibrational modes are enhanced in the resonance Raman spectra. The latter provide information about the hydrogen bonding network and structural distortions due to perturbations in the secondary coordination sphere. To reproduce the resonance enhancement patterns seen for high-frequency vibrational modes, the secondary coordination sphere must be included in the computational model. The structure and reduction potential of the Ni^IIIRd state have also been investigated both experimentally and computationally. This work begins to establish a foundation for computational resonance Raman spectroscopy to serve in a predictive fashion for investigating catalytic intermediates of NiRd.

Electrophilic alkylation of pseudotetrahedral nickel(II) arylthiolate complexes

A kinetic study is reported for reactions of pseudotetrahedral nickel(II) arylthiolate complexes [(Tp(R,Me))Ni-SAr] (Tp(R,Me) = hydrotris{3-R-5-methyl-1-pyrazolyl}borate, R = Me, Ph, and Ar = C6H5, C6H4-4-Cl, C6H4-4-Me, C6H4-4-OMe, 2,4,6-Me3C6H2, 2,4,6-(i)Pr3C6H2) with organic electrophiles R'X (i.e., MeI, EtI, BzBr) in low-polarity organic solvents (toluene, THF, chloroform, dichloromethane, or 1,2-dichloroethane), yielding a pseudotetrahedral halide complex [(Tp(R,Me))Ni-X] (X = Cl, Br, I) and the corresponding organosulfide R'SAr. Competitive reactions with halogenated solvents and adventitious air were also examined. Akin to reactions of analogous and biomimetic zinc complexes, a pertinent mechanistic question is the nature of the reactive nucleophile, either an intact thiolate complex or a free arylthiolate resulting from a dissociative pre-equilibrium. The observed kinetics conformed to a second-order rate law, first order with respect to the complex and electrophile, and no intermediate complexes were observed. In the absence of a mechanistically diagnostic rate law, a variety of mechanistic probes were examined, including kinetic effects of varying the metal, solvent, electrophile, and temperature, as well as the 3-pyrazolyl and arylthiolate substituents. Compared to zinc analogues, the effect of Ni-SAr covalency is also of interest herein. The results are broadly interpreted with respect to the disparate mechanistic pathways.

Steric and electronic effects on arylthiolate coordination in the pseudotetrahedral complexes [(Tp(Ph,Me))Ni-SAr] (Tp(Ph,Me) = hydrotris{3-phenyl-5-methyl-1-pyrazolyl}borate)

Synthesis and characterization of several new pseudotetrahedral arylthiolate complexes [(Tp(Ph,Me))Ni-SAr] (Tp(Ph,Me) = hydrotris{3-phenyl-5-methyl-1-pyrazolyl}borate; Ar = Ph, 2,4,6-(i)Pr3C6H2, C6H4-4-Cl, C6H4-4-Me, C6H4-4-OMe) are reported, including X-ray crystal structures of the first two complexes. With prior results, two series of complexes are spanned, [(Tp(Ph,Me))Ni-S-2,4,6-RC6H2] (R'' = H, Me, (i)Pr) plus the xylyl analogue [(Tp(Ph,Me))Ni-S-2,6-Me2C6H3], as well as [(Tp(Ph,Me))Ni-S-C6H4-4-Y] (Y = Cl, H, Me, OMe), intended to elucidate steric and/or electronic effects on arylthiolate coordination. In contrast to [(Tp(Me,Me))Ni-SAr] analogues that adopt a sawhorse conformation, the ortho-disubstituted complexes show enhanced trigonal and Ni-S-Ar bending, reflecting the size of the 3-pyrazole substituents. Moreover, weakened scorpionate ligation is implied by spectroscopic data. Little spectroscopic effect is observed in the series of para-substituted complexes, suggesting the observed effects are primarily steric in origin. The relatively electron-rich and encumbered complex [(Tp(Ph,Me))Ni-S-2,4,6-(i)Pr3C6H2] behaves uniquely when dissolved in CH3CN, forming a square planar solvent adduct with a bidentate scorpionate ligand, [(κ(2)-Tp(Ph,Me))Ni(NCMe)(S-2,4,6-(i)Pr3C6H2)]. This adduct was isolated and characterized by X-ray crystallography. Single-point DFT and TD-DFT calculations on a simplified [(κ(2)-Tp)Ni(NCMe)(SPh)] model were used to clarify the electronic spectrum of the adduct, and to elucidate differences between Ni-SAr bonding and spectroscopy between pseudotetrahedral and square planar geometries.
