Activation of Bis(guanidinate)lanthanide Alkyl and Aryl Complexes on Elemental Sulfur: Synthesis and Characterization of Bis(guanidinate)lanthanide Thiolates and Disulfides

Dinuclear ytterbium(III) benzamidinate complexes with bridging S32-, Se22- and Te22- ligands: synthesis, structure and magnetic properties

Treatment of Yb(II) complex [L2Yb(THF)2] (L = PhC(NSiMe3)2) with elemental sulfur, selenium or tellurium resulted in the isolation of a series of dinuclear Yb(III) complexes featuring side-on bound S32- (1), Se22- (2) or Te22- (3) moieties, respectively. Magnetic study on these complexes revealed that 3 is a rare lanthanide telluride single-molecule magnet (SMM).

Dipolar Coupling as a Mechanism for Fine Control of Magnetic States in ErCOT-Alkyl Molecular Magnets

The design of molecular magnets has progressed greatly by taking advantage of the ability to impart successive perturbations and control vibronic transitions in 4fn systems through the careful manipulation of the crystal field. Herein, we control the orientation and rigidity of two dinuclear ErCOT-based molecular magnets: the inversion-symmetric bridged [ErCOT(μ-Me)(THF)]2 (2) and the nearly linear Li[(ErCOT)2(μ-Me)3] (3). The conserved anisotropy of the ErCOT synthetic unit facilitates the direction of the arrangement of its magnetic anisotropy for the purposes of generating controlled internal magnetic fields, improving control of the energetics and transition probabilities of the electronic angular momentum states with exchange biasing via dipolar coupling. This control is evidenced through the introduction of a second thermal barrier to relaxation operant at low temperatures that is twice as large in 3 as in 2. This barrier acts to suppress through-barrier relaxation by protecting the ground state from interacting with stray local fields while operating at an energy scale an order of magnitude smaller than the crystal field term. These properties are highlighted when contrasted against the mononuclear structure ErCOT(Bn)(THF)2 (1), in which quantum tunneling of the magnetization processes dominate, as demonstrated by magnetometry and ab initio computational methods. Furthermore, far-infrared magnetospectroscopy measurements reveal that the increased rigidity imparted by successive removal of solvent ligands when adding bridging methyl groups, along with the increased excited state purity, severely limits local spin-vibrational interactions that facilitate magnetic relaxation, manifesting as longer relaxation times in 3 relative to those in 2 as temperature is increased.

Guanidinates as Alternative Ligands for Organometallic Complexes

For decades, ligands such as phosphanes or cyclopentadienyl ring derivatives have dominated Coordination and Organometallic Chemistry. At the same time, alternative compounds have emerged that could compete either for a more practical and accessible synthesis or for greater control of steric and electronic properties. Guanidines, nitrogen-rich compounds, appear as one such potential alternatives as ligands or proligands. In addition to occurring in a plethora of natural compounds, and thus in compounds of pharmacological use, guanidines allow a wide variety of coordination modes to different metal centers along the periodic table, with their monoanionic chelate derivatives being the most common. In this review, we focused on the organometallic chemistry of guanidinato compounds, discussing selected examples of coordination modes, reactivity and uses in catalysis or materials science. We believe that these amazing ligands offer a new promise in Organometallic Chemistry.

Heteroleptic Samarium(III) Chalcogenide Complexes: Opportunities for Giant Exchange Coupling in Bridging σ- and π-Radical Lanthanide Dichalcogenides

The introduction of (N2)3-• radicals into multinuclear lanthanide molecular magnets raised hysteresis temperatures by stimulating strong exchange coupling between spin centers. Radical ligands with larger donor atoms could promote more efficient magnetic coupling between lanthanides to provide superior magnetic properties. Here, we show that heavy chalcogens (S, Se, Te) are primed to fulfill these criteria. The moderately reducing Sm(II) complex, [Sm(N††)2], where N†† is the bulky bis(triisopropylsilyl)amide ligand, can be oxidized (i) by diphenyldichalcogenides E2Ph2 (E = S, Se, Te) to form the mononuclear series [Sm(N††)2(EPh)] (E = S, 1-S; Se, 1-Se, Te, 1-Te); (ii) S8 or Se8 to give dinuclear [{Sm(N††)2}2(μ-η2:η2-E2)] (E = S, 2-S2; Se, 2-Se2); or (iii) with Te═PEt3 to yield [{Sm(N††)2}(μ-Te)] (3). These complexes have been characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, multinuclear NMR, FTIR, and electronic spectroscopy; the steric bulk of N†† dictates the formation of mononuclear complexes with chalcogenate ligands and dinuclear species with the chalcogenides. The Lα1 fluorescence-detected X-ray absorption spectra at the Sm L3-edge yielded resolved pre-edge and white-line peaks for 1-S and 2-E2, which served to calibrate our computational protocol in the successful reproduction of the spectral features. This method was employed to elucidate the ground state electronic structures for proposed oxidized and reduced variants of 2-E2. Reactivity is ligand-based, forming species with bridging superchalcogenide (E2)-• and subchalcogenide (E2)3-• radical ligands. The extraordinarily large exchange couplings provided by these dichalcogenide radicals reveal their suitability as potential successors to the benchmark (N2)3-• complexes in molecular magnets.

Lanthanocene and Cerocene Alkyl Complexes: Synthesis, Structure, and Reactivity Studies

Lanthanocene and cerocene alkyl complexes [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃C)₂C₅H₃]₂Ln(CH₂C₆H₄-o-NMe₂) (Ln = La 3 and Ce 4) were obtained from the salt metathesis of {[η⁵-1,3-(Me₃C)₂C₅H₃]₂Ln(μ₃-κ³-O₃SCF₃)₂K(THF)₂}₂·THF (Ln = La 1·THF and Ce 2·THF) with LiCH₂C₆H₄-o-NMe₂. Reactivity of 3 and 4 toward various small molecules provides access to a series of lanthanide derivatives. For example, reactions of 3 and 4 with elemental chalcogens (sulfur and selenium) in 1:1 molar ratio give the lanthanide thiolates {[η⁵-1,3-(Me₃C)₂C₅H₃]₂Ln(μ-SCH₂C₆H₄-o-NMe₂)}₂ (Ln = La 5 and Ce 6) and selenolates {[η⁵-1,3-(Me₃C)₂C₅H₃]₂Ln(μ-SeCH₂C₆H₄-o-NMe₂)}₂ (Ln = La 7 and Ce 8). The compounds 3 and 4 react with two equivalents of elemental chalcogens (sulfur and selenium) to afford the lanthanide disulfides {[η⁵-1,3-(Me₃C)₂C₅H₃]₂Ln}₂(μ-η²:η²-S₂) (Ln = La 9 and Ce 10) and diselenides {[η⁵-1,3-(Me₃C)₂C₅H₃]₂Ln}₂(μ-η²:η²-Se₂) (Ln = La 11 and Ce 12). The lanthanide disulfides (9 and 10) or diselenides (11 and 12) can also be readily obtained through oxidation of the corresponding lanthanide thiolates (5 and 6) or selenolates (7 and 8) by elemental chalcogens concomitant with the (Me₂N-o-C₆H₄CH₂)₂E₂ (E = S or Se) release. Treatment of 3 and 4 with one equivalent or two equivalents of benzonitrile produces the serendipitous lanthanum and cerium-1-azaallyl complexes [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃C)₂C₅H₃]₂Ln[N(H)C(Ph)═CHC₆H₄-o-NMe₂] (Ln = La 13 and Ce 14) or amidine complexes [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃C)₂C₅H₃]₂Ln[N(H)C(Ph)NC(Ph)═CHC₆H₄-o-NMe₂]·C₇H₈ (Ln = La 15·C₇H₈ and Ce 16·C₇H₈), respectively. The compound 15 or 16 can also be readily synthesized by further insertion of one benzonitrile molecule into the 1-azaallyl complex 13 or 14. Insertion of N,N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide or phenyl isothiocyanate into Ln-C bonds within 3 and 4 results in the formation of the amidine complexes [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃C)₂C₅H₃]₂Ln[CyNC(CH₂C₆H₄-o-NMe₂)NCy] (Cy = cyclohexyl, Ln = La 17 and Ce 18) or thioamidato complexes [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃C)₂C₅H₃]₂Ln[SC(CH₂C₆H₄-o-NMe₂)NPh] (Ln = La 19 and Ce 20). All of the new compounds were characterized by various spectroscopic methods, and their solid-state structures were further confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses.

LMCT facilitated room temperature phosphorescence and energy transfer in substituted thiophenolates of Gd and Yb

To obtain luminescent lanthanide complexes with a low energy LMCT state the 2-(2'-mercaptophenyl)benzothiazolates, Ln(SSN)₃, and 2-(2'-mercaptophenyl)benzoxazolates, Ln₂(OSN)₆ (Ln = Gd, Yb), were synthesized by the reaction of amides Ln[N(SiMe₃)₂]₃ with respective thiophenols. Ytterbium complexes were structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis. Cyclic voltammetry revealed that the deprotonated mercaptophenyl ligands have significantly lower oxidation potentials than their phenoxy analogues and some β-diketones. The photophysical properties of Gd and Yb compounds were studied both in solution and in the solid state. The fluorescence spectra of the compounds in solution display the bands of the keto and enol forms of the ligands. No energy transfer from the organic part to Yb³⁺ has been detected in solutions of both Yb complexes, whereas in solids an intense metal-centered emission in the near infrared region was observed. The solid Gd compounds exhibited room temperature phosphorescence caused by unusually efficient intersystem crossing facilitated by the essentially reducing properties of OSN and SSN ligands. To explain the sensitization process occurring in solids Yb₂(OSN)₆ and Yb(SSN)₃ a specific non-resonant energy transfer mechanism via a ligand to metal charge transfer state has been proposed. Based on the Yb derivatives, NIR-emitting OLEDs with 860 μW cm^-2 maximal irradiance were obtained. Their Gd counterparts showed bright electrophosphorescence (up to 1350 cd m^-2) in the devices containing doped emission layers.

Synthesis, structure and reactivity of guanidinate rare earth metal bis(o-aminobenzyl) complexes

A series of guanidinate rare-earth dialkyl complexes were synthesized. Their reactivity towards small molecules has been disclosed.

Stabilization of molecular lanthanide polysulfides by bulky scorpionate ligands

Well-defined lanthanide polysulfide complexes containing S4(2-) and S5(2-) ligands, the samarium(iii) pentasulfide complex Sm(Tp(iPr2))(κ(1)-3,5-(i)Pr2Hpz)(S5) and the tetrasulfide-bridged binuclear ytterbium(iii) complex (μ-S4)[Yb(Tp(iPr2))(κ(1)-3,5-(i)Pr2Hpz)(κ(2)-3,5-(i)Pr2pz)]2 (Tp(iPr2) = hydro-tris(3,5-diisopropylpyrazolyl)borate), have been synthesized and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

Ln3I5(S2N2)(S2)(THF)10 - a new type of molecular compounds

Unprecedented complexes of the composition Ln3I5(S2N2)(S2)(THF)10 were obtained in the reactions of neodymium and dysprosium iodide-nitrides with sulfur. The inorganic core of the molecules contains the cyclic fragments Ln(μ-S2)Ln, LnSNSN and LnSN. Ten of the fourteen atoms of the core are coplanar, the remaining four S2 and I2 atoms lie in the other two orthogonal planes. The dysprosium complex upon excitation with UV light exhibits the metal-centered luminescence characteristic of the Dy(3+) ion. Geometric parameters of the molecules, computational data, electron spectroscopy and fluorescence suggest the existence of some conjugation in the mentioned heterocycles.

Microwave-assisted expeditious and efficient synthesis of novel quinolin-4-ylmethoxychromen-2- and -4-ones catalyzed by YbCl3 under a solvent free one-pot three component domino reaction and their antimicrobial activity

MW assisted multicomponent A³ synthesis was developed for the synthesis of quinolin-4-ylmethoxychromen-2- and -4-ones in high yields with YbCl₃ and reused efficiently for four times.
