Abstract
The self-assembly of d8 transition metal complexes is essential for the development of optoelectronic and sensing materials with superior photofunctional properties. However, detailed insight into the electronic delocalization of excited states across multiple molecules, particularly in comparing 5d8 (Pt(ii)) and 4d8 (Pd(ii)) systems, remains ambiguous but important. In this study, we have successfully evaluated the differences in the excited-state delocalization and thermal responses of self-assembled Pt(ii) and Pd(ii) complexes. Although the complexes presented herein, K[M(CN)2(dFppy)]·H2O (M = Pt or Pd, dFppy = 2-(4,6-difluorophenyl)pyridinate), are crystallographically isomorphous with similarly short metal⋯metal contacts, only the Pt(ii) complex exhibited thermal equilibria between delocalized excited states, resulting in a drastic thermochromic luminescence with a red-shift of greater than 100 nm. In contrast, the dimeric localized emission from the Pd(ii) complex showed a significant increase in the quantum yield upon cooling, approaching almost unity.

Abstract
Porous molecular crystals (PMCs) have gained significant importance as next-generation functional porous materials. However, the selective crystallisation of the PMC phase remains a challenge. Herein, we have systematically controlled the stability of the luminescent PMC phase prepared using the luminescent Pt(II) complex [Pt(pbim)(N^O)] (pbim = 2-phenylbenzimidazolate, N^O = N-heteroaryl carboxylate) with Pt⋯Pt electronic interactions. The PMC phase formation varied significantly among the complexes depending on the heteroaryl group of the ancillary N^O ligand; the oxazolyl-bearing complex did not form a PMC phase, whereas the pyrazyl- and 5-fluoropyridyl-bearing complexes spontaneously formed a porous structure. This difference was rationalised by the π-stacking capability of the heteroaryl group of the ancillary ligand. Furthermore, owing to the presence of the one-dimensional Pt⋯Pt chains in this PMC phase, the photophysical properties of PMCs resulting from the Pt⋯Pt interactions were also significantly changed by the ancillary ligands.

Abstract
A series of nine new soft salts based on two platinum(II) complexes, namely ([Pt(C^N)(CN)2]-[Pt(C^N)(en)]+) (en = ethane-1,2-diamine), has been developed and synthesized. Their photophysical properties in both solution and the solid state were described. All soft salt complexes exhibit phosphorescence emission with PLQY in the solid state up to 0.36. Most of these materials displayed aggregation-induced emission (AIE) or aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) in water/DMSO solutions as the water ratio increased. Structure-property relationships were analyzed in relation to emission properties. The presence of the free nitrogen atoms in soft salt complexes with a C^N pyrimidine-based ligand allowed for reversible sensitivity to acidic vapors, resulting in the quenching of phosphorescence emission. Additionally, for selected soft salts, we described reversible vapochromism behaviour, making these new materials interesting for multi-detection purposes in anti-counterfeiting applications.

Abstract
Platinum(II) complexes of square-planar geometry are interesting from a crystal engineering viewpoint because they exhibit strong luminescence based on the self-assembly of molecular units. The luminescence color changes in response to gentle stimuli, such as vapor exposure or weak mechanical forces. Both the molecular and the crystal designs for soft crystals are critical to effectively generate the chromic luminescence phenomenon of Pt(II) complexes. In this topical review, strategies for fabricating chromic luminescent Pt(II) complexes are described from a crystal design perspective, focusing on the structural regulation of Pt(II) complexes that exhibit assembly-induced luminescence via metal-metal interactions and structural control of anionic Pt(II) complexes using cations. The research progress on the evolution of various chromic luminescence properties of Pt(II) complexes, including the studies conducted by our group, are presented here along with the latest research outcomes, and an overview of the frontiers and future potential of this research field is provided.

Abstract
Square-planar NiII complexes are interesting as cheaper and more sustainable alternatives to PtII luminophores widely used in lighting and photocatalysis. We investigated the excited-state behavior of two NiII complexes, which are isostructural with two luminescent PtII complexes. The initially excited singlet metal-to-ligand charge transfer (1 MLCT) excited states in the NiII complexes decay to metal-centered (3 MC) excited states within less than 1 picosecond, followed by non-radiative relaxation of the 3 MC states to the electronic ground state within 9-21 ps. This contrasts with the population of an emissive triplet ligand-centered (3 LC) excited state upon excitation of the PtII analogues. Structural distortions of the NiII complexes are responsible for this discrepant behavior and lead to dark 3 MC states far lower in energy than the luminescent 3 LC states of PtII compounds. Our findings suggest that if these structural distortions could be restricted by more rigid coordination environments and stronger ligand fields, the excited-state relaxation in four-coordinate NiII complexes could be decelerated such that luminescent 3 LC or 3 MLCT excited states become accessible. These insights are relevant to make NiII fit for photophysical and photochemical applications that relied on PtII until now.

Abstract
Controlled self-assembly of PtII complexes is key to the development of optical and stimuli-responsive materials, but designing and precisely controlling them is still difficult owing to weak intermolecular interactions. Herein, we report the successful water-vapor-induced assembly of an anionic PtII complex [Pt(CN)2 (ppy)]- (Hppy=2-phenylpyridine) electrostatically loaded onto cationically charged layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanoparticles consisting of Mg2+ and Al3+ ions. When the PtII complexes were densely loaded onto the LDH nanoparticles, the assembly was maintained, even in dilute aqueous media. In the case of sparse loading, the PtII complexes were loaded discretely in the dry state; however, when water vapor was adsorbed, the increased mobility of the PtII complexes led to their assembly on the LDH nanoparticles. The presence of water vapor led to a drastic change in luminescence from green to orange.

Abstract
We present the synthesis and characterization of two series of mononuclear heteroleptic anionic cycloplatinated(II) complexes featuring terminal cyanide ligand Q+[Pt(C^N)(p-MeC6H4)(CN)]- [C^N = benzoquinolate (bzq), Q+ = K+ 1 and NBu4+ 4; 2-phenylpyridinate (ppy), Q+ = K+ 2 and NBu4+ 5 and 2-(2,4- difluorophenyl)pyridinate (dfppy), Q+ = K+ 3 and NBu4+ 6] and a series of symmetrical binuclear complexes (NBu4)[Pt2(C^N)2(p-MeC6H4)2(μ-CN)] (C^N = bzq 7, ppy 8, dfppy 9). Compounds 5, 6, and 7-9 were further determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. There are no apparent intermolecular Pt···Pt interactions owing to the presence of bulky NBu4+ counterion. Slow crystallization of K[Pt(ppy)(p-MeC6H4)(CN)] 2 in acetone/hexane evolves with formation of yellow crystals, which were identified by single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods as the salt complex {[Pt(ppy)(p-MeC6H4)(CN)]2K3(OCMe2)4(μ-OCMe2)2}[Pt(ppy)(p-MeC6H4)(μ-CN)Pt(ppy)(p-MeC6H4)]·2acetone (10), featuring the binuclear anionic unit 8- neutralized by an hybrid inorganic-organometallic coordination polymer {[Pt(ppy)(p-MeC6H4)(CN)]2K3(OCMe2)4(μ-OCMe2)2}+. The photophysical properties of all compounds were recorded in powder, polystyrene film, and solution states with a quantum yield up to 21% for 9 in the solid state. All complexes displayed bright emission in rigid media, and for the interpretation of their absorption and emission properties, density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT calculations were applied.

Abstract
Two anhydrous polymorphs of cadmium cyanoplatinate Cd[Pt(CN)4] coordination polymers have been synthesized and thermally, spectroscopically, and structurally characterized. α-Cd[Pt(CN)4] and β-Cd[Pt(CN)4] are densely packed, highly emissive 3-D solids, with quantum yields of 0.85 (λem = 520 nm) and 0.79 (λem = 448 nm) respectively. Their mutual hydrate, Cd(H2O)[Pt(CN)4]·2H2O, forms a complex 3-D coordination polymer with Cd-O-Cd bridges and Pt-Pt interactions. Additionally, exposure of solid α-Cd[Pt(CN)4] and β-Cd[Pt(CN)4] to several solvent vapours results in the formation of 2-D cyanometallate sheets of the adduct compounds CdL2[Pt(CN)4] (L = DMSO, DMF, and pyridine). Cd(pyridine)2[Pt(CN)4] shows a significantly lower quantum yield (0.32) in comparison to the parent Cd[Pt(CN)4] coordination polymers. Upon heating CdL2[Pt(CN)4] preferentially forms the kinetic product α-Cd[Pt(CN)4].

Abstract
The reliable calculation of phosphorescence energies of phosphor materials is at the core of designing efficient phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (PhOLEDs). Therefore, it is of paramount importance to have a robust computational protocol to perform those calculations in a black-box manner. In this work, we use Domain-Based Local Pair Natural Orbital Coupled Cluster theory with single, double, and perturbative triple excitation (DLPNO-CCSD(T)) calculations to attain the phosphorescence energies of a large pool of Pt(II) complexes. Several approaches to incorporate relativistic effects in our calculations were tested. In addition, we have used the DLPNO-CCSD(T) values (i.e., our best theoretical values) to assess the performance of different flavors of density functional theory including pure, hybrid, meta-hybrid, and range-separated functionals. Among the tested functionals, the M06HF functional provides the best values compared with the DLPNO-CCSD(T) ones, with a mean absolute deviation (MAD) value of 0.14 eV. In its turn, and thanks to the increased accuracy achieved in the calculation of phosphorescence energies, we also demonstrate that not all of the investigated complexes emit from their lowest-lying triplet state (T1). The outlier complexes include different complex photophysical scenarios and both Kasha and anti-Kasha types of complexes. Finally, we provide a general computational protocol to pre-screen whether T1 is actually the emissive state and to accurately calculate the phosphorescence energies of Pt(II) complexes.

Abstract
A new platinum(II) complex-based soft salt S1, ([Pt(tpp)(ed)]+[Pt(pba) (CN)2]-) (tpp = 2-(4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)pyridine, ed = ethane-1,2-diamine, pba = 4-(2-pyridyl)benzaldehyde), was designed and synthesized. UV-visible absorption and photoluminescence (PL) spectra were studied to elucidate the nature of ground and excited states. The soft salt complex was found to show self-assembly properties with the assistance of electrostatic, π-π stacking, and Pt···Pt interactions, resulting in the remarkable emergence of low-energy absorption and PL bands. Morphological transformation of S1 from undefined nanosized aggregates to nanofibers with different solvent compositions has been demonstrated. Interestingly, a luminescent polymer film was prepared by doping S1 into a polyethylene glycol matrix. The film displayed distinctive emission color change from yellow to red upon heating. Eventually, a high-level anti-counterfeiting application was accomplished using a time-resolved imaging technique based on the thermochromic luminescence property and long emission decay time displayed by S1. It is anticipated that this work can provide deep insights into the control of intermolecular interactions between cationic and anionic complexes of soft salt upon exposure to different external stimuli, resulting in the development of smart luminescent materials for various applications.

Abstract
Transition-metal complexes bearing biaryl-2,2'-diyl ligands tend to show intense luminescence. However, difficulties in synthesis have prevented their further functionalization and practical applications. Herein, a series of platinum(II) complexes bearing biaryl-2,2'-diyl ligands, which have never been prepared in air, were synthesized through transmetalation and successive cyclometalation of biarylboronic acids. This approach does not require any air- or moisture-sensitive reagents and features a simple synthesis even in air. The resulting (Et4 N)2 [Pt(m,n-F2 bph)(CN)2 ] (m,n-F2 bph=m,n-difluorobiphenyl-2,2'-diyl) complexes exhibit intense green emissions with high quantum efficiencies of up to 0.80 at 298 K. The emission spectral fitting and variable-temperature emission lifetime measurements indicate that the high quantum efficiency was achieved because of the tight packing structure and strong σ-donating ability of bph.

Abstract
Novel hetero-binuclear platinum complexes (HBC-Pt(II)-M(II), M = Ca(II), Mg(II), Zn(II), and Cd(II)) have been synthesized by the reaction of the corresponding precursors [Pt(ppy)(μ-Cl)]2 with (2-(1 H-tetrazol-5-yl)phenyl)diphenylphosphine oxide (TTPPO). The X-ray structures of the complexes show that two ancillary ligands TTPPO in the square-planar Pt(II) moiety act as a quadridentate chelating agent for the other metal center, eventually forming a distorted octahedral configuration. There are no significant π-π interactions and Pt-M metallophilic interactions in the crystal lattice, due to the steric hindrances associated with the rigid octahedral structure together with the bulky TTPPO. Consequently, HBC-Pt-M complexes show monomer emission characteristics with quantum yields up to 59% in powder, suggesting their great potential for practical applications. DFT and TD-DFT calculations on HBC-Pt-Zn reveal that the phosphorescence can be ascribed to intraligand charge transfer (3ILCT) combined with some metal-to-ligand charge transfer (3MLCT) in the Pt(ppy) moiety, which is consistent with the observations from the photophysical investigations.

Abstract
Three groups of luminescent platinum complexes [Pt(C^N)(L)(Y)] [C^N=benzothienyl-pyridine (1), bezofuryl-pyridine (2), phenyl-pyridine (3); L/Y=DMSO/Cl (a), PPh3 /Cl (b), PPh3 /CN (c)] have been probed as halogen-bond (XB) acceptors towards iodofluorobenzenes (IC6 F5 and I2 C6 F4 ). Compounds 1 a and 2 a (L/Y=DMSO/Cl) afford the adducts 1 a⋅⋅⋅I2 C6 F4 and 2 a⋅⋅⋅I2 C6 F4 , which feature I⋅⋅⋅Sbtpy /I⋅⋅⋅πbtpy and I⋅⋅⋅ODMSO /I⋅⋅⋅Cl short contacts, respectively. The phosphane-cyanide derivatives 1 c and 2 c (L/Y=PPh3 /CN) co-crystallise with both IC6 F5 and I2 C6 F4 . None of the phpy-based species 3 a-3 c participated in XB interactions. Although the native complexes are rather poor luminophores in the solid state (Φem =0.023-0.089), the adducts exhibit an up to 10-fold increase of the intensity with a minor alteration of the emission energy. The observed gain in the quantum efficiency is mainly attributed to the joint influence of non-covalent interactions (halogen/hydrogen bonding, π-π stacking), which govern the crystal-packing mode and diminish the radiationless pathways for the T1 →S0 transition by providing a rigid environment around the chromophore.

Abstract
A family of cyanide-bridged heterometallic aggregates has been constructed of the chromophoric cycloplatinated metalloligands and coordinatively unsaturated d10 fragments {M(PPh3)n}. The tetranuclear complexes of general composition [Pt(C^N)(CN)2M(PPh3)2]2 [C^N = ppy, M = Cu (1), Ag (2); C^N = tolpy (Htolpy = 2-(4-tolyl)-pyridine), M = Cu (4), Ag (5); C^N = F2ppy (HF2ppy = 2-(4, 6-difluorophenyl)-pyridine), M = Cu (7), Ag (8)] demonstrate a squarelike arrangement of the molecular frameworks, which is achieved due to favorable coordination geometries of the bridging ligands and the metal ions. Variation of the amount of the ancillary phosphine (for M = Ag) afforded compounds [Pt(C^N)(CN)2Ag(PPh3)]2 (C^N = ppy, 3; C^N = tolpy, 6); for the latter one an alternative cluster topology, stabilized by the Pt-Ag metallophilic and η1-Cipso(C^N)-Ag bonding, was observed. The solid-state structures of all of the title species 1-8 were determined crystallographically. The complexes exhibit moderately strong room-temperature phosphorescence as crystalline powders (Φem = 16-34%, λem = 470-511 nm). The luminescence studies and time-dependent density functional theory computational analysis indicate that the photophysical behavior is dominated by the 3π-π* electronic transitions localized on the cyclometalated fragment and mixed with MPtLCT contribution, while the d10-phosphine motifs have a negligible contribution into the frontier orbitals and therefore show a little influence on the emission performance of the described compounds.

Abstract
The synthesis, structure, electrochemistry, and photophysical properties of a series of heteroleptic tris- cyclometalated Pt(IV) complexes are reported. The complexes mer-[Pt(C^N)2 (C'^N')]OTf, with C^N=C-deprotonated 2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)pyridine (dfppy) or 2-phenylpyridine (ppy), and C'^N'=C-deprotonated 2-(2-thienyl)pyridine (thpy) or 1-phenylisoquinoline (piq), were obtained by reacting bis- cyclometalated precursors [Pt(C^N)2 Cl2] with AgOTf (2 equiv) and an excess of the N'^C'H pro-ligand. The complex mer-[Pt(dfppy)2 (ppy)]OTf was obtained analogously and photoisomerized to its fac counterpart. The new complexes display long-lived luminescence at room temperature in the blue to orange color range. The emitting states involve electronic transitions almost exclusively localized on the ligand with the lowest π-π* energy gap and have very little metal character. DFT and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) calculations on mer-[Pt(ppy)2 (C'^N')](+) (C'^N'=thpy, piq) and mer/fac-[Pt(ppy)3](+) support this assignment and provide a basis for the understanding of the luminescence of tris-cyclometalated Pt(IV) complexes. Excited states of LMCT character may become thermally accessible from the emitting state in the mer isomers containing dfppy or ppy as chromophoric ligands, leading to strong nonradiative deactivation. This effect does not operate in the fac isomers or the mer complexes containing thpy or piq, for which nonradiative deactivation originates mainly from vibrational coupling to the ground state.

Abstract
With the chelating aminophosphane ligands Ph2P-(o-C6H4)-N(CH3)2 (PNMe2) and Ph2P-(o-C6H4)-NC4H8 (PNpy), the four halide (Cl, Br, I)-bridged copper coordination compounds [Cu(μ-Cl)(PNMe2)]2 (1), [Cu(μ-Br)(PNMe2)]2 (2), [Cu(μ-I)(PNMe2)]2 (3), and [Cu(μ-I)(PNpy)]2 (4) were synthesized and structurally characterized. Their photophysical properties were studied in detail. The complexes exhibit strong blue (λmax = 464 (3) and 465 nm (4)) and green (λmax = 506 (1) and 490 nm (2)) luminescence as powders with quantum yields of up to 65% at decay times as short as 4.1 μs. An investigation of the emission decay behavior between 1.3 and 300 K gives insight into the nature of the emitting states. At temperatures below T ≈ 60 K, the decay times of the studied compounds are several hundred microseconds long, which indicates that the emission originates from a triplet state (T1 state). DFT calculations show that this state is of (metal+halide)-to-ligand charge transfer (3)(M+X)LCT character. Investigations at 1.3 K allow us to gain insight into the three triplet substates, in particular, to determine the individual substate decay times being as long as a few milliseconds. The zero-field splittings are smaller than 1 or 2 cm(-1). With an analysis of these data, conclusions about the effectiveness of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) can be drawn. Interestingly, the large differences of SOC constants of the halides are not obviously displayed in the triplet state properties. With a temperature increase from T ≈ 60 to 300 K, a significant decrease of the emission decay time by almost 2 orders of magnitude is observed, and at ambient temperature, the decay times amount only to ∼4-7 μs without a significant reduction of the emission quantum yields. This drastic decrease of the (radiative) decay time is a result of the thermal population of a short-lived singlet state (S1 state) that lies energetically only a few hundred wavenumbers (460-630 cm(-1)) higher than the T1 state. Such an emission mechanism corresponds to a thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF). At ambient temperature, almost only a delayed fluorescence (∼98%) is observed. Compounds showing this mechanism are highly attractive for applications in OLEDs or LEECs as, in principle, it is possible to harvest all singlet and triplet excitons for the generation of light in the lowest excited singlet state. This effect represents the singlet harvesting mechanism.
