Abstract
The imidazole nucleus represents a significant group of heterocyclic molecules with diverse significance in the modern world due to its exploration potential and various pharmacological applications. The relevance of imidazole and its derivatives has gained popularity in recent years, especially in the production of commercial drugs and the treatment of various conditions. The imidazole nucleus is present in many natural compounds and widely distributed in essential amino acids, such as l-histidine, whose derivatives exhibit powerful pharmacological properties. In this review, we delve into the historical timeline and development of synthetic pathways for tri- and tetra-substituted imidazoles used in the renowned Radziszewski reaction. Furthermore, we explore various bacteriological applications documented in the literature, as well as current advances in preclinical approaches to imidazole-based drug discovery. Tri- or tetra-substituted imidazole derivatives show strong potential for new synthesis methods, such as reflux or microwave, as well as various biological activities.

Abstract
Unnatural amino acids with enhanced properties, such as increased complexing ability and luminescence, are considered to be highly attractive building blocks for bioinspired frameworks, such as probes for biomolecule dynamics, sensitive fluorescent chemosensors, and peptides for molecular imaging, among others. Therefore, a novel series of highly emissive heterocyclic alanines bearing a benzo[d]oxazolyl unit functionalized with different heterocyclic π-spacers and (aza)crown ether moieties was synthesized. The new compounds were completely characterized using the usual spectroscopic techniques and evaluated as fluorimetric chemosensors in acetonitrile and aqueous mixtures in the presence of various alkaline, alkaline-earth, and transition metal ions. The different crown ether binding moieties as well as the electronic nature of the π-bridge allowed for fine tuning of the sensory properties of these unnatural amino acids towards Pd2+ and Fe3+, as seen by spectrofluorimetric titrations.

Abstract
p-Nitrophenol and its derivatives can cause serious harm to the health of mankind and the earth's ecosystem. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a novel and rapid detection technology for p-nitrophenol and its derivative. Herein, excellent water-soluble, large-size and dual-emissive neuron cell-analogous carbon-based probes (NCNPs) have been prepared via a solvothermal approach, using o-phenylenediamine as the only precursor, which exhibit two distinctive fluorescence (FL) peaks at 420 and 555 nm under 345 nm excitation. The NCNPs show a neuron cell-like branched structure, are cross-connected, and are in the range of 10-20 nm in skeleton diameter. Interestingly, their blue-green dual-colour fluorescence is quenched by p-nitrophenol or its derivative due to the specific mechanism of the ππ stacking interactions or internal filtration effect. Accordingly, a simple, rapid, direct and free-label ratiometric FL detection of p-nitrophenol is proposed. An excellent linear relationship shows linear regions over the range of 0.1-50 μM between the ratio of the FL intensity (FL555 nm/FL420 nm) and the concentrations of p-nitrophenol. The detection limit is as low as 43 nM (3σ). Importantly, the NCNP-based probe also shows acceptable repeatability and reproducibility for the detection of p-nitrophenol and its derivatives, and the recovery results for p-nitrophenol in real wastewater samples are favourable.

Abstract
The development of sensors for pH monitoring is of extreme importance in the monitoring of concrete and reinforced concrete structures. Imidazole derivatives are promising probes for pH sensing due to the amphoteric nature of their heterocyclic ring, which can be protonated/deprotonated upon pH changes. In this work, a triarylimidazole was synthesised and used as a dopant in an organic–inorganic hybrid (OIH) sol–gel matrix to obtain a pH-sensitive membrane for further application in optical fibre sensors (OFS). The triarylimidazole probe shows fluorimetric response in pH between 9 and 13, which is the desired range for monitoring carbonation of concrete. This degradation process lowers the highly alkaline pH of concrete (12.5–13) to values below 9, which creates favourable conditions for corrosion of concrete reinforcement. The OIH membranes used were based on Jeffamine THF170 and 3-glycidoxypropytrimethoxysilane precursors, which had already been shown to be suitable and resistant in contact with cement-based materials. The OIHs were doped with three different contents of the triarylimidazole and the structural, dielectric, thermal and optical properties of the pure and doped OIH materials were evaluated. The structural analysis showed that the presence of the triarylimidazole did not change the structural properties of the OIH material. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy showed that in the doped samples the conductivity increased with the imidazole concentration. The εr obtained for the doped samples ranged approximately from 11 to 19 and for the pure matrices was 8. Thermal analysis showed that these materials are stable up to 350 °C and that the presence of the probe did not change that feature. The optical properties showed that the prepared OIH materials have promising properties to be used as pH sensitive fluorimetric probes. OIH sol–gel materials based on Jeffamine THF-170 and GPTMS, doped with triarylimidazole, were synthesized. The εr obtained for the OIH doped samples ranged between 11 and 19. The OIHs are thermally stable for fresh concrete purposes.![]()

Abstract
The physiological significance of calcium ions such as the role in cellular signalling, cell growth, etc. have driven the development of methods to detect and monitor the level of Ca2+ ions, both in vivo and in vitro. Although various approaches for the detection of calcium ions have been reported, methods based on small molecular fluorescent probes have unique advantages including small probe size, easy monitoring of detection processes and applicability in biological systems. In this review article, we will discuss the progress in the development of Ca2+ -binding fluorescent probes by taking into account the types of chelating groups that have been employed for Ca2+ binding.

Abstract
Push-pull molecules represent a unique and fascinating class of organic π-conjugated materials. Herein, we provide a summary of their recent extraordinary design inspired by letters of the alphabet, especially focusing on H-, L-, T-, V-, X-, and Y-shaped molecules. Representative structures from each class were presented and their fundamental properties and prospective applications were discussed. In particular, emphasis is given to molecules recently prepared in our laboratory with T-, X-, and Y-shaped arrangements based on indan-1,3-dione, benzene, pyridine, pyrazine, imidazole, and triphenylamine. These push-pull molecules turned out to be very efficient charge-transfer chromophores with tunable properties suitable for second-order nonlinear optics, two-photon absorption, reversible pH-induced and photochromic switching, photocatalysis, and intercalation.

Ternary complex formation with solvent
molecules and other adventitious
ligands may compromise the performance of metal-ion-selective fluorescent
probes. As Ca(II) can accommodate more than 6 donors in the first
coordination sphere, commonly used crown ether ligands are prone to
ternary complex formation with this cation. The steric strain imposed
by auxiliary ligands, however, may result in an ensemble of rapidly
equilibrating coordination species with varying degrees of interaction
between the cation and the specific donor atoms mediating the fluorescence
response, thus diminishing the change in fluorescence properties upon
Ca(II) binding. To explore the influence of ligand architecture on
these equilibria, we tethered two structurally distinct aza-15-crown-5
ligands to pyrazoline fluorophores as reporters. Due to ultrafast
photoinduced electron-transfer (PET) quenching of the fluorophore
by the ligand moiety, the fluorescence decay profile directly reflects
the species composition in the ground state. By adjusting the PET
driving force through electronic tuning of the pyrazoline fluorophores,
we were able to differentiate between species with only subtle variations
in PET donor abilities. Concluding from a global analysis of the corresponding
fluorescence decay profiles, the coordination species composition
was indeed strongly dependent on the ligand architecture. Altogether,
the combination of time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy with selective
tuning of the PET driving force represents an effective analytical
tool to study dynamic coordination equilibria and thus to optimize
ligand architectures for the design of high-contrast cation-responsive
fluorescence switches.
