Trinuclear-based Copper(I) Pyrazolate Polymers: Effect of Trimer π-Acid···Halide/Pseudohalide Interactions on the Supramolecular Structure and Phosphorescence

Deep-Red Luminescent Cuprous-Lead Bromide as a Dual-Responsive Sensor for Fe3+ and Cr2O72

Both optically active 1-tetrazole-4-imidazole-benzene (TIB) with bifunctional azole groups and heterometals were utilized to build a new type of one-dimensional (1-D) hybrid cuprous-lead bromide [PbCu₂Br₄(TIB)₂]_n (1), which exhibits infrequent deep-red luminescent emission at 704 nm with a large Stokes shift of 321 nm. Owing to the existence of rare free Lewis basic imidazole groups, 1 can be used as the sole dual-responsive luminescent sensor for the efficient and selective detection of Fe³⁺ and Cr₂O₇^2- in an aqueous solution.

Luminescent polymorphic aggregates of trinuclear Cu(I)-pyrazolate tuned by intertrimeric CuNPy weak coordination bonds

Five luminescent polymorphic aggregates of trinuclear Cu(i)-pyrazolate, namely [anti-Cu3L3]2 (1), [syn-Cu3L3·C2H5OH]2 (2), [anti-Cu3L3·C2H5OH]n (3), [anti-Cu3L3·0.5C7H8]n (4) and [syn-Cu3L3·C8H10]n (5) (HL = 4-(pyridin-4-ylthio)-3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazole), were reported. The trimeric Cu3L3 fragments present syn- and anti-conformations dependent on the dangled direction of 4-pyridyl groups on the two sides of the Cu3Pz3 plane (Pz = pyrazolate). Intertrimeric NPyCu weak coordination bonds associate these Cu3L3 fragments together to form dimeric or polymeric structures, which are further stabilized by crystallized solvent molecules or intertrimeric CuCu interactions. The solvated complexes (3-5) may be transformed into the unsolvated complex 1 by evacuation of the crystallized solvents upon heating. All these complexes emit from green to yellow under UV irradiation, which originated from the triplet excited states of metal to ligand charge transfer (3MLCT) mixed with intertrimeric CuCu interactions. This work provides a novel kind of supramolecular aggregate based on Cu3Pz3 beyond the classical π-acidbase adducts and metallophilicity-dependent dimers/oligomers.

Visible-light excited luminescent trigonal prismatic metallocages from a template-directed assembly

Coinage-Metal-Based Cyclic Trinuclear Complexes with Metal-Metal Interactions: Theories to Experiments and Structures to Functions

Among the d¹⁰ coinage metal complexes, cyclic trinuclear complexes (CTCs) or trinuclear metallocycles with intratrimer metal-metal interactions are fascinating and important metal-organic or organometallic π-acids/bases. Each CTC of characteristic planar or near-planar trimetal nine-membered rings consists of Au(I)/Ag(I)/Cu(I) cations that linearly coordinate with N and/or C atoms in ditopic anionic bridging ligands. Since the first discovery of Au(I) CTC in the 1970s, research of CTCs has involved several fundamental areas, including noncovalent and metallophilic interaction, excimer/exciplex, acid-base chemistry, metalloaromaticity, supramolecular assemblies, and host/guest chemistry. These allow CTCs to be embraced in a wide range of innovative potential applications that include chemical sensing, semiconducting, gas and liquid adsorption/separation, catalysis, full-color display, and solid-state lighting. This review aims to provide a historic and comprehensive summary on CTCs and their extension to higher nuclearity complexes and coordination polymers from the perspectives of synthesis, structure, theoretical insight, and potential applications.

Brightly phosphorescent tetranuclear copper(i) pyrazolates

Described herein is the synthesis and photophysics of two tetranuclear copper complexes, {[3,5-(Pri)2,4-(Br)Pz]Cu}4 and {[3-(CF3),5-(But)Pz]Cu}4 tailor-designed by manipulating the pyrazolyl ring substituents. Unlike their trinuclear analogues, the luminescence of the tetranuclear species is molecular (not supramolecular) in nature with extremely high solid-state quantum yields of ∼80% at room temperature.

CFA-13 - a bifunctional perfluorinated metal-organic framework featuring active Cu(i) and Cu(ii) sites

The synthesis and crystal structure of the mixed-valent perfluorinated metal-organic framework (Me₂NH₂)[CFA-13] (Coordination Framework Augsburg University-13), (Me₂NH₂)[CuCu(tfpc)₄] (H₂-tfpc = 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)-1H-pyrazole-4-carboxylic acid) is described. The copper-containing MOF crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system within the space group P2₁/n (no. 14) and the unit cell parameters are as follows: a = 22.3887(19), b = 13.6888(8), c = 21.1804(13) Å, β = 90.495(3)°, V = 6491.0(8) ų. (Me₂NH₂)[CFA-13] features a porous 3-D structure constructed from two types of secondary building units (SBUs). Besides novel trinuclear [Cu(pz)₄]^- coordination units, the network also exhibits Cu(ii) paddle-wheel SBUs. (Me₂NH₂)[CFA-13] is fully characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, variable temperature powder X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy, photoluminescence, gas sorption measurements and pulse chemisorption experiments. M[CFA-13] (M = K⁺, Cs⁺) frameworks were prepared by postsynthetic exchange of interchannel dimethylammonium cations. Moreover, it was shown that CO molecules can be selectively bound at Cu(i) sites of [Cu(pz)₄]^- units, whereas Cu(ii) paddle-wheel units bind selectively NH₃ molecules.

Solventless supramolecular chemistry via vapor diffusion of volatile small molecules upon a new trinuclear silver(I)-nitrated pyrazolate macrometallocyclic solid: an experimental/theoretical investigation of the dipole/quadrupole chemisorption phenomena

A comparative study on the tendency of a new trinuclear silver(I) pyrazolate, namely, [N,N-(3,5-dinitropyrazolate)Ag]3 (1), and a similar compound known previously, [N,N-[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)pyrazolate]Ag]3 (2), to adsorb small volatile molecules was performed. It was found that 1 has a remarkable tendency to form adducts, at room temperature and atmospheric pressure, with acetone, acetylacetone, ammonia, pyridine, acetonitrile, triethylamine, dimethyl sulfide, and tetrahydrothiophene, while carbon monoxide, tetrahydrofuran, alcohols, and diethyl ether were not adsorbed. On the contrary, 2 did not undergo adsorption of any of the aforementioned volatile molecules. Adducts of 1 were characterized by elemental analysis, IR, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area, and diffusion NMR measurements. The crystal structures of 1·2CH3CN and compound 3, derived from an attempt to crystallize the adduct of 1 with ammonia, were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffractometric studies. The former shows a sandwich structure with a 1:2 stoichiometric [Ag3]/[CH3CN] ratio in which one acetonitrile molecule points above and the other below the centroid of the Ag3N6 metallocycle. Compound 3 formed via rearrangement of the ammonia adduct to yield an anionic trinuclear silver(I) derivative with an additional bridging 3,5-dinitropyrazolate and having [Ag(NH3)2](+) as the counterion, [Ag(NH3)2][N,N-(3,5-dinitropyrazolate)4Ag3]. Irreversible sorption and/or decomposition upon vapor exposure are desirable advantages toward toxic gas filtration applications, including ammonia inhalation. TGA confirms the analytical data for all of the samples, showing weight loss for each adsorbed molecule at temperatures significantly higher than the corresponding boiling temperature, which suggests a chemical-bonding nature for adsorption as opposed to physisorption. BET surface measurements of the "naked" compound 1 excluded physical adsorption in its porous cavities. Density functional theory simulation results are also consistent with the chemisorption model, explain the experimental adsorption selectivity for 1, and attribute the lack of similar adsorption by 2 to significantly less polarizable electrostatic potential and also to strong argentophilic bonding whose energy is even higher than the quadrupole-dipole adduct bond energy upon proper selection of the density functional.

Trigonal prismatic Cu(I) and Ag(I) pyrazolato nanocage hosts: encapsulation of S8 and hydrocarbon guests

Two neutral hexanuclear trigonal prismatic cage molecules have been synthesized by coupling two planar triangular M3pz3-panels, M = Cu(I) and Ag(I), in eclipsed geometry. The ~230 Å(3) cage volume can be either vacant or occupied by neutral guests. The crystal structures of the M6-cyclohexane and Ag6-S8 host-guest species have been determined.

Trinuclear copper(I) and silver(I) adducts of 4-chloro-3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)pyrazolate and 4-bromo-3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)pyrazolate

Syntheses, structural, and photoluminescence properties of {[4-X-3,5-(CF3)2Pz]M}3 (X = Cl or Br, M = Cu or Ag) containing a heavier halide at the pyrazolyl ring 4-positions are reported. The Cu2O and Ag2O react with [4-Cl-3,5-(CF3)2Pz]H or [4-Br-3,5-(CF3)2Pz]H to form the corresponding metal pyrazolates, which are trinuclear adducts of the type {[4-X-3,5-(CF3)2Pz]M}3 with a nine-membered M3N6 metallacyclic core. They also feature relatively short M···Cl or M···Br intertrimer separations (∼ 3.6 Å) leading to supramolecular aggregates in the solid state. Distinct from the 4-H analogues {[3,5-(CF3)2Pz]M}3, none of the four complexes described herein exhibits short intertrimer metal-metal interactions (as closest such M···M separations are at a distance greater than 5.0 Å). The {[4-X-3,5-(CF3)2Pz]M}3 adducts exhibit bright photoluminescence even at room temperature. The photophysical data suggest that the {[4-X-3,5-(CF3)2Pz]Cu}3 complexes emit from an associative excited state, and the drastic Stokes shift suggests a significant change to the ground state structure of the trinuclear moiety and/or intermolecular interactions upon photoexcitation. The {[4-X-3,5-(CF3)2Pz]Ag}3 complexes emit from a ligand-centered excited state affected by silver and the heavier halogens. Thin films of {[4-X-3,5-(CF3)2Pz]Cu}3 trimers are promising for volatile organic compound (VOC) sensor applications as they exhibit luminescence color change upon exposure to vapors of benzene and its alkylated derivatives.
