Abstract
In an effort to break the single-cage 16-vertex supraicosahedral barrier, we have explored the reaction of [Cp*CoCl2], 1 with [LiBH4·THF], followed by thermolysis with [BH3·SMe2] [Cp* = η5-C5Me5]. Although our objective to synthesize a high-nuclearity single-cage cluster was not achieved, we have isolated a 25-vertex macropolyhedral cluster [(Cp*Co)5Co2B18H17(CH3)S] (2). Cluster 2 is an exceptional fused hourglass-shaped macropolyhedral cluster composing two icosahedral cores ([Co3B9] and [Co4B8]) and three tetrahedral cores [Co2B2]. Although the fusion in cluster 2 is very complex, it follows Mingos fusion formalism, leading to an attractive hourglass-shaped cluster. Through subtle changes in reaction conditions, two new cobaltaborane clusters, nido-4,5,7-[(Cp*Co)3B7H11] (3) and nido-2,9-[(Cp*Co)2B8H12] (4), have been isolated. The observed core geometries of clusters 3 and 4 are similar to the parent deltahedra [B10H14] with (n + 2) SEP (SEP = skeletal electron pair, n = no. of vertices). All the synthesized cobaltaboranes have been characterized in solution by ESI-mass, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy and structurally solved by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis.

Abstract
Transition metal triple-decker complexes are an interesting class of sandwich complexes that engrossed great attention due to their structures and properties. Over the decades, synthesis of triple-decker complexes featuring homocyclic, heterocyclic or π-conjugated rings as middle decks have been abundantly reported. In this regard, the chemistry of such complexes bearing boron in the middle deck are well explored due to the ability of boron-containing cycles to readily coordinate bifacially with metal atoms thereby forming triple-decker complexes. On the other hand, electron counting rules and theoretical calculations have strengthened our knowledge of the structure and bonding in these complexes. Further, these complexes can be used as synthons to generate organometallic polymers having interesting electronic, optical and magnetic properties that can be appropriately tuned to cater to a wide range of applications. In our quest for novel metallaboranes and metallaheteroboranes, we have been successful in isolating various triple-decker complexes that feature boron in the middle deck. This review explained elaborately the synthesis, structures, and bonding in such complexes reported by us and others.

Abstract
In an effort to synthesize metallaheteroborane clusters of higher nuclearity, the reactivity of metallaheteroboranes, nido-[(Cp*M)2B6S2H4(CS3)] (Cp* = C5Me5) (1: M = Co; 2: M = Rh) with various metal carbonyls have been investigated. Photolysis of nido-1 and nido-2 with group 6 metal carbonyls, M'(CO)5.THF (M' = Mo or W) were performed that led to the formation of a series of adducts [(Cp*M)2B6S2H4(CS3){M'(CO)5}] (3: M = Co, M' = Mo; 4: M = Co, M' = W; 5: M = Rh, M' = Mo; 6: M = Rh, M' = W) instead of cluster expansion reactions. In these adducts, the S atom of C=S group of di(thioboralane)thione {B2CS3} moiety is coordinated to M'(CO)5 (M = Mo or W) in η1-fashion. On the other hand, thermolysis of nido-1 with Ru3(CO)12 yielded one fused metallaheteroborane cluster [{Ru(CO)3}3S{Ru(CO)}{Ru(CO)2}Co2B6SH4(CH2S2){Ru(CO)3}2S], 7. This 20-vertex-fused cluster is composed of two tetrahedral {Ru3S} and {Ru2B2}, a flat butterfly {Ru3S} and one octadecahedron {Co2RuB7S} core with one missing vertex, coordinated to {Ru2SCH2S2} through two boron and one ruthenium atom. On the other hand, the room temperature reaction of nido-2 with Co2(CO)8 produced one 19-vertex fused metallaheteroborane cluster [(Cp*Rh)2B6H4S4{Co(CO)}2{Co(CO)2}2(μ-CO)S{Co(CO)3}2], 8. Cluster 8 contains one nido-decaborane {Rh2B6S2}, one butterfly {Co2S2} and one bicapped square pyramidal {Co6S} unit that exhibits an intercluster fusion with two sulfur atoms in common. Clusters 3-6 have been characterized by multinuclear NMR and IR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and structurally determined by XRD analyses. Furthermore, the DFT calculations have been carried out to gain insight into electronic, structural and bonding patterns of the synthesized clusters.

Abstract
In an effort to synthesize cobalt-rich metallaheteroboranes from decaborane(14) analogues, we have studied the reaction of 10-vertex nido-[(Cp*Co)2B6H6E2] (Cp* = η5-C5Me5, 1: E = Se and 2: E = Te) with [Co2(CO)8] under thermolytic conditions. All of these reactions yielded face-fused clusters, [(Cp*Co)2B6H6E2{Co(CO)}(μ-CO){Co3(CO)6}] (3: E = Se and 4: E = Te). Further, when clusters 3 and 4 were treated with [Co2(CO)8], they underwent further cluster buildup reactions leading to the formation of 16-vertex doubly face-fused clusters [(Cp*Co)2B6H6E2{Co2(CO)2}(μ-CO)2{Co4(CO)8}] (5: E = Se and 6: E = Te). Cobaltaheteroboranes 3 and 4 comprise one icosahedron {Co4B6E2} and one square pyramidal {Co3B2} moiety, whereas 5 and 6 are made with one icosahedron {Co4B6E2} and two square pyramidal {Co3B2} cores. In an attempt to generate heterometallic metal-rich clusters, we have explored the reactivity of decaborane(14) analogue nido-[(Cp*Co)2B7TeH9] (7) with [Ru3(CO)12] at 80 °C, which afforded face-fused 13-vertex cluster [(Cp*Co)2B7H7Te{Ru3(CO)8}] (8). Cluster 8 is a rare example of a metal-rich metallaheteroborane in which one icosahedron {Co2Ru2B7Te} and a tetrahedron {Ru2B2} units are fused through a common {RuB2} triangular face. Further, the treatment of nido-[(Cp*Co)2B6S2H4(CH2S2)] (9) with [Fe2(CO)9] afforded 11-vertex nido-[(Cp*Co)2B6S2H4(CH2S2){Fe(CO)3}] (10). The core structure of 10 is similar to that of [C2B9H11]2- with a five-membered pentahapto coordinating face. All of the synthesized metal-rich metallaheteroboranes have been characterized by multinuclear nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, ESI-MS, and structurally solved by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Furthermore, theoretical investigations gave insight into the bonding of such higher-nuclearity clusters containing heavier chalcogen atoms.

Abstract
Triply-bridging bis-{hydrido(borylene)} and bis-borylene species of groups 6, 8 and 9 transition metals are reported. Mild thermolysis of [Fe2 (CO)9 ] with an in situ produced intermediate, generated from the low-temperature reaction of [Cp*WCl4 ] (Cp*=η5 -C5 Me5 ) and [LiBH4 ⋅THF] afforded triply-bridging bis-{hydrido(borylene)}, [(μ3 -BH)2 H2 {Cp*W(CO)2 }2 {Fe(CO)2 }] (1) and bis-borylene, [(μ3 -BH)2 {Cp*W(CO)2 }2 {Fe(CO)3 }] (2). The chemical bonding analyses of 1 show that the B-H interactions in bis-{hydrido (borylene)} species is stronger as compared to the M-H ones. Frontier molecular orbital analysis shows a significantly larger energy gap between the HOMO-LUMO for 2 as compared to 1. In an attempt to synthesize the ruthenium analogue of 1, a similar reaction has been performed with [Ru3 (CO)12 ]. Although we failed to get the bis-{hydrido(borylene)} species, the reaction afforded triply-bridging bis-borylene species [(μ3 -BH)2 {WCp*(CO)2 }2 {Ru(CO)3 }] (2'), an analogue of 2. In search for the isolation of bridging bis-borylene species of Rh, we have treated [Co2 (CO)8 ] with nido-[(RhCp*)2 (B3 H7 )], which afforded triply-bridging bis-borylene species [(μ3 -BH)2 (RhCp*)2 Co2 (CO)4 (μ-CO)] (3). All the compounds have been characterized by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction study; 1 H, 11 B, 13 C NMR spectroscopy; IR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry.

Abstract
In an attempt to expand the library of M2B5 bicapped trigonal-bipyramidal clusters with different transition metals, we explored the chemistry of [Cp*WCl4] with metal carbonyls that enabled us to isolate a series of mixed-metal tungstaboranes with an M2{B4M’} {M = W; M’ = Cr(CO)4, Mo(CO)4, W(CO)4} core. The reaction of in situ generated intermediate, obtained from the low temperature reaction of [Cp*WCl4] with an excess of [LiBH4·thf], followed by thermolysis with [M(CO)5·thf] (M = Cr, Mo and W) led to the isolation of the tungstaboranes [(Cp*W)2B4H8M(CO)4], 1–3 (1: M = Cr; 2: M = Mo; 3: M = W). In an attempt to replace one of the BH—vertices in M2B5 with other group metal carbonyls, we performed the reaction with [Fe2(CO)9] that led to the isolation of [(Cp*W)2B4H8Fe(CO)3], 4, where Fe(CO)3 replaces a {BH} core unit instead of the {BH} capped vertex. Further, the reaction of [Cp*MoCl4] and [Cr(CO)5·thf] yielded the mixed-metal molybdaborane cluster [(Cp*Mo)2B4H8Cr(CO)4], 5, thereby completing the series with the missing chromium analogue. With 56 cluster valence electrons (cve), all the compounds obey the cluster electron counting rules. Compounds 1–5 are analogues to the parent [(Cp*M)2B5H9] (M= Mo and W) that seem to have generated by the replacement of one {BH} vertex from [(Cp*W)2B5H9] or [(Cp*Mo)2B5H9] (in case of 5). All of the compounds have been characterized by various spectroscopic analyses and single crystal X-ray diffraction studies.

Abstract
In a quest for efficient precursors for the synthesis of boratrane complexes of late transition metals, we have developed a useful synthetic method using [L'M(μ-Cl)Clx ]2 as precursors (L'=η6 -p-cymene, M=Ru, x=1; L'=COD, M=Rh, x=0 and L'=Cp*, M=Ir or Rh, x=1; COD=1,5-cyclooctadiene, Cp*=η5 -C5 Me5 ). For example, treatment of Na[(H3 B)bbza] or Na[(H2 B)mp2 ] (bbza=bis(benzothiazol-2-yl)amine; mp=2-mercaptopyridyl) with [L'M(μ-Cl)Clx ]2 yielded [(η6 -p-cymene)RuBH{(NCSC6 H4 )(NR)}2 ] (2; R=NCSC6 H4 ), [{N(NCSC6 H4 )2 }RhBH{(NCSC6 H4 )(NR)}2 ] (3; R=NCS-C6 H4 ), [(η6 -p-cymene)RuBH(L)2 ] (5; L=C5 H4 NS), and [Cp*MBH(L)2 ] (6 and 7; L=C5 H4 NS, M=Ir or Rh). In order to delineate the significance of the ligands, we studied the reactivity of [(COD)Rh(μ-Cl)]2 with Na[(H3 B)bbza], which led to the formation of the isomeric agostic complexes [(η4 -COD)Rh(μ-H)BHRh(C14 H8 N3 S2 )3 ], 4 a and 4 b, in parallel to the formation of 16-electron square-pyramidal rhodaboratrane complex 3. Compounds 4 a and 4 b show two different geometries, in which the Rh-B bonds are shorter than in the reported Rh agostic complexes. The new compounds have been characterized in solution by various spectroscopic analyses, and their structural arrangements have been unequivocally established by crystallographic analyses. DFT calculations provide useful insights regarding the stability of these metallaboratrane complexes as well as their M→B bonding interactions.

Abstract
A series of new bis(σ)borate and agostic complexes of group 7 metals have been synthesized and structurally characterized from various borate ligands, such as trihydrobis(benzothiazol-2-yl)amideborate (Na[(H3 B)bbza]), trihydro(2-aminobenzothiazolyl)borate (Na[(H3 B)abz]), and dihydrobis(2-mercaptopyridyl)borate (Na[(H2 B)mp2 ]) (bbza=bis(benzothiazol-2-yl)amine, abz=2-aminobenzothiazolyl, and mp=2-mercaptopyridyl). Photolysis of [Mn2 (CO)10 ] with Na[(H3 B)bbza] formed bis(σ)borate complex [Mn(CO)3 (μ-H)2 BHNCSC6 H4 (NR)] (1; R=NCSC6 H4 ). Octahedral complex [Re(CO)2 (N3 C2 S2 C12 H8 )2 ] (2) was generated under similar reaction conditions with [Re2 (CO)10 ]. Similarly, when [Mn2 (CO)10 ] was treated with Na[(H3 B)abz], bis(σ)borate complex [Mn(CO)3 (μ-H)2 BH(HN2 CSC6 H4 )] (3) and the agostic complex [Mn(CO)3 (μ-H)BH(HN2 CSC6 H4 )2 ] (4) were formed. To probe the potential formation of agostic complexes of the heavier group 7 metals, we carried out the photolysis of [M2 (CO)10 ] with Na[(H2 B)mp2 ] and found that [M(CO)3 (μ-H)BH(C5 H4 NS)2 ] (5: M=Re; 6: M=Mn) was formed in moderate yield. Complexes 1 and 3 feature a (κ3 -H,H,N) coordination mode, whereas 4, 5, and 6 display both (κ3 -H,N,N) and (κ3 -H,S,S) modes of the corresponding ligands. To investigate the lability of the CO ligands of 1 and 3, we treated the complexes with phosphine ligands that generated novel bis(σ)borate complexes [Mn(μ-H)2 (BHNCSC6 H4 )(NR)(CO)2 PL2 L'] (R=NCSC6 H4 ; 7 a: L=L'=Ph; 7 b: L=Ph, L'=Me) and [Mn(μ-H)2 BHN(NCSC6 H4 )R(CO)2 PL2 L'] (R=NCSC6 H4 ; 8 a: L=L'=Ph; 8 b: L=Ph, L'=Me). Complexes 7 and 8 are structural isomers with different coordination modes of the bbza ligand. In addition, DFT calculations were performed to shed some light on the bonding and electronic structures of these complexes.

Abstract
A series of novel isocloso-diiridaboranes [(Cp*Ir)2B6H6], 1, 2; [1,7-(Cp*Ir)2B8H8], 4; [1,4-(Cp*Ir)2B8H8], 5; [(Cp*Ir)2B9H9], 8; isonido-[(Cp*Ir)2B7H7], 3; and 10-vertex cluster [5,7-(Cp*Ir)2B8H12], 6 (Cp* = η(5)-C5Me5) have been isolated and structurally characterized from the pyrolysis of [Cp*IrCl2]2 and BH3·thf. On the other hand, the corresponding rhodium system afforded 10- and 11-vertices clusters [5-(Cp*Rh)B9H13)], 7, and [(Cp*Rh)2B9H9], 9, respectively. Clusters 1 and 2 are topological isomers. The geometry of 1 is dodecahedral, similar to that of its parent borane [B8H8](2-), in which two of the [BH] vertices are replaced by two [Cp*Ir] fragments. The geometry of 2 can be derived from a nine-vertex tricapped trigonal prism by removing one of the capped vertices. Compounds 4 and 5 are 10-vertex isocloso clusters based on a 10-vertex bicapped square antiprism structure. The only difference between them is the presence of a metal-metal bond in 5. The solid-state structures of 8 and 9 attain an 11-vertex geometry in which a unique six-membered B6H6 moiety is bonded to the metal center. In addition, quantum-chemical calculations have been used to provide further insight into the electronic structure and stability of the clusters. All the compounds have been characterized by IR and (1)H, (11)B, and (13)C NMR spectroscopy in solution, and the solid-state structures were established by X-ray crystallographic analysis.

These cubane clusters have been isolated from a thermally driven reaction of diruthenium analogue of pentaborane(9) [(Cp*RuH)2B3H7], 1, and [Ru3(CO)12]. Structural and spectroscopic studies revealed the existence of triply bridged hydrogen (μ3-H) atoms that participate as a vertex in the cubane core formation for compounds 2, 3, and 4. In addition, the crystal structure of these clusters clearly confirms the presence of an electron precise borane ligand (borylene fragment) which is triply bridged to the trimetallic units. Bonding of these novel complexes has been studied computationally by DFT methods, and the studies demonstrate that the cubane clusters 2 and 3 possess 60 cluster valence electrons (cves) with six metal-metal bonds. All the new compounds have been characterized in solution by mass spectrometry; IR; and (1)H, (11)B, and (13)C NMR studies, and the structural types were unequivocally established by crystallographic analysis of compounds 2-5.
