Unprecedented Luminescent Heteropolynuclear Aggregates with Gold Thiolates as Building Blocks

Heterometallic Au(I)-Cu(I) Clusters: Luminescence Studies and 1O2 Production

Two different organometallic gold(I) compounds containing naphthalene and phenanthrene as fluorophores and 2-pyridyldiphenylphosphane as the ancillary ligand were synthesized (compounds 1 with naphthalene and 2 with phenanthrene). They were reacted with three different copper(I) salts with different counterions (PF₆^-, OTf^-, and BF₄^-; OTf = triflate) to obtain six Au(I)/Cu(I) heterometallic clusters (compounds 1a-c for naphthalene derivatives and 2a-c for phenanthrene derivatives). The heterometallic compounds present red pure room-temperature phosphorescence in both solution, the solid state, and air-equilibrated samples, as a difference with the dual emission recorded for the gold(I) precursors 1 and 2. The presence of Au(I)-Cu(I) metallophilic contacts has been identified using single-crystal X-ray diffraction structure resolution of two of the compounds, which play a direct role in the resulting red-shifted emission with respect to the gold(I) homometallic precursors. Polystyrene (PS) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) polymeric matrices were doped with our luminescent compounds, and the resulting changes in their emissive properties were analyzed and compared with those previously recorded in the solution and the solid state. All complexes were tested to analyze their ability to produce ¹O₂ and present very good values of Φ_Δ up to 50%.

Controllable Synthesis and Luminescence Behavior of Tetrahedral Au@Cu4 and Au@Ag4 Clusters Supported by tris(2-Pyridyl)phosphine

We report herein a family of polynuclear complexes, [Au@Ag₄(Py₃P)₄]X₅ and [Au@Cu₄(Py₃P)₄]X₅ [X = NO₃, ClO₄, OTf, BF₄, SbF₆], containing unprecedented Au-centered Ag₄ and Cu₄ tetrahedral cores supported by tris(2-pyridyl)phosphine (Py₃P) ligands. The [Au@Ag₄]⁵⁺ clusters are synthesized via controlled substitution of the central Ag(I) ion in all-silver [Ag@Ag₄]⁵⁺ precursors by the reaction with Au(tht)Cl, while the [Au@Cu₄]⁵⁺ cluster is assembled through the treatment of a pre-organized [Au(Py₃P)₄]⁺ metallo-ligand with 4 equiv of a Cu(I) source. The structure of the Au@M₄ clusters has been experimentally and theoretically investigated to reveal very weak intermolecular Au-M metallophilic interactions. At ambient temperature, the designed compounds emit a modest turquoise-to-yellow luminescence with microsecond lifetimes. Based on the temperature-dependent photophysical experiments and DFT/TD-DFT computations, the emission observed has been assigned to an MLCT or LLCT type depending on composition of the cluster core.

From Thioureas to Thioquinolines through Isolated Benzothiazines by Gold Catalysis

New benzothiazine heterocycles have been formed from thiourea derivatives by using different gold catalysts. The catalyst and the conditions were optimised towards the selective synthesis of six‐membered benzothiazine heterocycles, characterised by X‐ray diffraction. Interestingly, these organic compounds evolved under gold catalysis in basic medium to achieve the formation of amino thioquinolines through an unprecedented aromatisation process of the heterocycle. The reaction was also carried out stoichiometrically by reaction with gold complexes to afford thioquinolines coordinated to the gold fragment. Benzothiazine, amino thioquinoline heterocycles and gold‐derived species have a great potential for biological applications.

Assembly of Heterometallic AuICu2I2 Cores on the Scaffold of NPPN-Bridging Cyclic Bisphosphine

The row of metallocyclic dinuclear gold(I) complexes with cyclic diphosphines, namely, P-pyridylethyl-substituted 1,5-diaza-3,7-diphosphacyclooctanes, has been obtained. Further interaction of the dinuclear gold(I) complexes with copper(I) iodide gave the first examples of hexanuclear Au^I/Cu^I complexes containing two unusual trinuclear AuICu₂I₂ fragments. The structures of di- and hexanuclear complexes were confirmed by NMR spectroscopy, ESI mass spectrometry, elemental analysis, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. All of the obtained complexes are moderate emitters in the solid state. Dinuclear gold(I) complexes displayed a greenish emission with the maxima in the emission spectra at ca. 550 nm. The obtained hexanuclear heterobimetallic Au^I/Cu^I complexes are triplet solid-state blue emitters with the maximum in the emission spectra at 463 and 484 nm. According to the TD-DFT calculations, the observed emission of all studied complexes had a triplet origin and was caused by the ³CC or ³(MLCT) T₁ → S₀ transitions for dinuclear and hexanuclear complexes, respectively.

Keep it tight: a crucial role of bridging phosphine ligands in the design and optical properties of multinuclear coinage metal complexes

Copper subgroup metal ions in the +1 oxidation state are classical candidates for aggregation via non-covalent metal-metal interactions, which are supported by a number of bridging ligands. The bridging phosphines, soft donors with a relatively labile coordination to coinage metals, serve as convenient and essential components of the ligand environment that allow for efficient self-assembly of discrete polynuclear aggregates. Simultaneously, accessible and rich modification of the organic spacer of such P-donors has been used to generate many fascinating structures with attractive photoluminescent behavior. In this work we consider the development of di- and polynuclear complexes of M(i) (M = Cu, Ag, Au) and their photophysical properties, focusing on the effect of phosphine bridging ligands, their flexibility and denticity.

Luminescent gold-thallium derivatives with a pyridine-containing 12-membered aza-thioether macrocycle

The coordination modes of the ligand 2,5,8-trithia[9](2,6)pyridinophane (L) to thallium(i), gold(iii) and gold(i) have been studied. Thallium(i) is coordinated by the macrocyclic ligand in [Tl(L)](PF6) (1) through all the sulfur and nitrogen atoms, in a distorted square-pyramidal geometry with the thallium(i) ion in the apical position and with the presence of an inert lone pair. Gold(iii) is bonded by the ligand only through the nitrogen of the pyridine group in [AuCl3(L)] (2), whereas two AuI-C6F5 fragments coordinate the sulfur atoms next to the pyridine moiety of the ligand in [{Au(C6F5)}2(μ-L)] (3), which form a linear polymer through intermolecular aurophilic contacts. The heterometallic TlI/AuI complex {[Au(C6F5)2Tl]2(L)}n (4) features a polymeric structural nature with a metallic pseudo-rhombic Au2Tl2 core, which repeats itself forming a zig-zag polymer. In each Au2Tl2 unit only one thallium atom is bonded by the NS3 donor set of the macrocyclic ligand and also forms two unsupported Au-Tl bonds with two [Au(C6F5)2]- units in an overall pseudo-octahedral geometry. The other thallium atom similarly bridges the same [Au(C6F5)2]- units and links a neighbouring Au2Tl2 moiety, thus exhibiting a distorted trigonal planar geometry being bonded only to three gold atoms with unsupported Au-Tl interactions. This complex displays an interesting thermochromic behaviour showing emissions mainly resulting from MM'CT transitions at room temperature. At 77 K a dual emission appears, probably arising from the two different thallium environments. DFT calculations have been carried out in the attempt to investigate the origin of the emissions of complex 4.

Temperature-assisted formation of reversible metallophilic Au-Ag interaction arrays

A temperature-controlled self-assembly process in a solution of [Ag(terpy)]nn+ and [Au(C6F5)2]- units has been performed. For this, the crystallisation of the complex [{Au(C6F5)2}Ag(terpy)]n under the same experimental conditions, changing only the temperature, allows the synthesis of polymorphs [{Au(C6F5)2}2Ag2(terpy)2]n (2a) at 298 K and [{Au(C6F5)2}Ag(terpy)]n (2b) at 280 K. The X-ray diffraction studies previously reported for 2a revealed a polymeric structure with an unusual + + - - + + - - charge sequence, whereas for polymorph 2b, a more classical + - + - disposition has been obtained. The conversion of one polymorph into the other can be achieved by simple dissolution of one of them and by recrystallisation at the corresponding temperature. The mechanism of the formation of each polymorph is proposed in view of their 1H NMR, 1H-PGSE NMR and molar conductivity measurements.

Near-unity thermally activated delayed fluorescence efficiency in three- and four-coordinate Au(i) complexes with diphosphine ligands

The synthesis and photoluminescence properties of three-coordinate Au(i) complexes with rigid diphosphine ligands LMe {1,2-bis[bis(2-methylphenyl)phosphino]benzene}, LEt {1,2-bis[bis(2-ethylphenyl)phosphino]benzene}, and LiPr {1,2-bis[bis(2-isopropylphenyl)phosphino]benzene} are investigated. The LMe and LEt ligands afford two types of complexes: dinuclear complexes [μ-LMe(AuCl)2] (1d) and [μ-LEt(AuCl)2] (2d) with an Au(i)-Au(i) bond and mononuclear three-coordinate Au(i) complexes LMeAuCl (1) and LEtAuCl (2). On the other hand, the bulkiest ligand, LiPr, affords three-coordinate Au(i) complexes, LiPrAuCl (3) and LiPrAuI (4), but no dinuclear complexes. X-ray analysis suggests that both 3 and 4 possess a highly distorted trigonal planar geometry. Moreover, luminescence data reveal that at room temperature, 3 and 4 exhibit yellow-green thermally activated delayed fluorescence in the crystalline state with maximum emission wavelengths at 558 and 549 nm, respectively. The emission yields are close to unity. Quantum chemical calculations suggest that the emission of 4 originates from the (σ + X) → π* excited state that possesses strong intraligand charge-transfer character. The luminescent properties of four-coordinate Au(i) complex (5) possessing a tetrahedral geometry are discussed on the basis of the emission spectra and decay times measured in a temperature range of 309-77 K.

Preparation of carbon-based AuAg alloy nanoparticles by using the heterometallic [Au4Ag4] cluster for efficient oxidative coupling of anilines

We herein report the preparation of unique heteroatom-doped and carbon-based AuAg alloy nanoparticles (NPs) via the pyrolysis of a structurally defined octanuclear heterometallic Au(i)-Ag(i) cluster [Au4Ag4(Dppy)4(Tab)4(MeCN)4](PF6)8 (2, Dppy = diphenylphosphine-2-pyridine and Tab = 4-(trimethylammonio)benzenethiolate). This cluster-precursor approach exerts a fine control over the spatial arrangement, size and uniformity of the AuAg alloy NPs as well as the doped heteroatoms (P, N, F and S). The optimized material prepared at 450 °C efficiently catalyzes the oxidative coupling of anilines to yield azobenzenes under mild conditions.

Polynuclear cage-like Au(i) phosphane complexes based on a S2− template: observation of multiple luminescence in coordinated polyaromatic systems

Sulfido-phosphane Au(i) complexes display multiple emissions, the nature of which is determined by the distance between Au(i) and the chromophoric center.

Logical regulation of the enzyme-like activity of gold nanoparticles by using heavy metal ions

In this study we employed self-deposition and competitive or synergistic interactions between metal ions and gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) to develop OR, AND, INHIBIT, and XOR logic gates through regulation of the enzyme-like activity of Au NPs. In the presence of various metal ions (Ag(+), Bi(3+), Pb(2+), Pt(4+), and Hg(2+)), we found that Au NPs (13 nm) exhibited peroxidase-, oxidase-, or catalase-like activity. After Ag(+), Bi(3+), or Pb(2+) ions had been deposited on the Au NPs, the particles displayed strong peroxidase-like activity; on the other hand, they exhibited strong oxidase- and catalase-like activities after reactions with Ag(+)/Hg(2+) and Hg(2+)/Bi(3+) ions, respectively. The catalytic activities of these Au NPs arose mainly from the various oxidation states of the surface metal atoms/ions. Taking advantage of this behavior, we constructed multiplex logic operations-OR, AND, INHIBIT, and XOR logic gates-through regulation of the enzyme-like activity after the introduction of metal ions into the Au NP solution. When we deposited Hg(2+) and/or Bi(3+) ions onto the Au NPs, the catalase-like activities of the Au NPs were strongly enhanced (>100-fold). Therefore, we could construct an OR logic gate by using Hg(2+)/Bi(3+) as inputs and the catalase-like activity of the Au NPs as the output. Likewise, we constructed an AND logic gate by using Pt(4+) and Hg(2+) as inputs and the oxidase-like activity of the Au NPs as the output; the co-deposition of Pt and Hg atoms/ions on the Au NPs was responsible for this oxidase-like activity. Competition between Pb(2+) and Hg(2+) ions for the Au NPs allowed us to develop an INHIBIT logic gate-using Pb(2+) and Hg(2+) as inputs and the peroxidase-like activity of the Au NPs as the output. Finally, regulation of the peroxidase-like activity of the Au NPs through the two inputs Ag(+) and Bi(3+) enabled us to construct an XOR logic gate.

Luminescent di- and polynuclear organometallic gold(I)-metal (Au2, {Au2Ag}n and {Au2Cu}n) compounds containing bidentate phosphanes as active antimicrobial agents

The reaction of new dinuclear gold(I) organometallic complexes containing mesityl ligands and bridging bidentate phosphanes [Au(2)(mes)(2)(μ-LL)] (LL=dppe: 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphano)ethane 1a, and water-soluble dppy: 1,2-bis(di-3-pyridylphosphano)ethane 1b) with Ag(+) and Cu(+) lead to the formation of a family of heterometallic clusters with mesityl bridging ligands of the general formula [Au(2)M(μ-mes)(2) (μ-LL)][A] (M=Ag, A=ClO(4)(-), LL=dppe 2a, dppy 2b; M=Ag, A=SO(3)CF(3)(-), LL=dppe 3a, dppy 3b; M=Cu, A=PF(6)(-), LL=dppe 4a, dppy 4b). The new compounds were characterized by different spectroscopic techniques and mass spectrometry The crystal structures of [Au(2)(mes)(2)(μ-dppy)] (1b) and [Au(2)Ag(μ-mes)(2)(μ-dppe)][SO(3)CF(3)] (3a) were determined by a single-crystal X-ray diffraction study. 3a in solid state is not a cyclic trinuclear Au(2)Ag derivative but it gives an open polymeric structure instead, with the {Au(2)(μ-dppe)} fragments "linked" by {Ag(μ-mes)(2)} units. The very short distances of 2.7559(6) Å (Au-Ag) and 2.9229(8) Å (Au-Au) are indicative of gold-silver (metallophilic) and aurophilic interactions. A systematic study of their luminescence properties revealed that all compounds are brightly luminescent in solid state, at room temperature (RT) and at 77 K, or in frozen DMSO solutions with lifetimes in the microsecond range and probably due to the self-aggregation of [Au(2)M(μ-mes)(2)(μ-LL)](+) units (M=Ag or Cu; LL=dppe or dppy) into an extended chain structure, through Au-Au and/or Au-M metallophilic interactions, as that observed for 3a. In solid state the heterometallic Au(2)M complexes with dppe (2a-4a) show a shift of emission maxima (from ca. 430 to the range of 520-540 nm) as compared to the parent dinuclear organometallic product 1a while the complexes with dppy (2b-4b) display a more moderate shift (505 for 1b to a max of 563 nm for 4b). More importantly, compound [Au(2)Ag(μ-mes)(2)(μ-dppy)]ClO(4) (2b) resulted luminescent in diluted DMSO solution at room temperature. Previously reported compound [Au(2)Cl(2)(μ-LL)] (LL dppy 5b) was also studied for comparative purposes. The antimicrobial activity of 1-5 and Ag[A] (A=ClO(4)(-), SO(3)CF(3)(-)) against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and yeast was evaluated. Most tested compounds displayed moderate to high antibacterial activity while heteronuclear Au(2)M derivatives with dppe (2a-4a) were the more active (minimum inhibitory concentration 10 to 1 μg mL(-1)). Compounds containing silver were ten times more active to gram-negative bacteria than the parent dinuclear compound 1a or silver salts. Au(2)Ag compounds with dppy (2b, 3b) were also potent against fungi.
