Nanoalloy Materials for Chemical Catalysis

Nanoalloys (NAs), which are distinctly different from bulk alloys or single metals, take on intrinsic features including tunable components and ratios, variable constructions, reconfigurable electronic structures, and optimizable performances, which endow NAs with fascinating prospects in the catalysis field. Here, the focus is on NA materials for chemical catalysis (except photocatalysis or electrocatalysis). In terms of composition, NA systems are divided into three groups, noble metal, base metal, and noble/base metal mixed NAs. Their design and fabrication for the optimization of catalytic performance are systematically summarized. Additionally, the correlations between the composition/structure and catalytic properties are also mentioned. Lastly, the challenges faced in current research are discussed, and further pathways toward their development are suggested.

Synthesis and characterization of FeCo nanowires with high coercivity

Ferromagnetic FeCo nanocrystals with high coercivity have been synthesized using a reductive decomposition method. The sizes and shapes of the nanocrystals were found to be dependent on reaction parameters such as the surfactant ratio, the precursor concentration and the heating rate. Synthesized nanocrystals have a body-centered cubic crystal structure for both particles and nanowires and the (110) crystalline direction is along the long axis of the nanowires. The coercivity and magnetization of the FeCo nanocrystals are found to be dependent on morphology. Nanowires of Fe60Co40 with saturation magnetization of 92 emu g(-1) and coercive force of 1.2 kOe have been obtained in this study.

C-isolated Ag-C-Co sandwich sphere-nanostructures and their high activity catalysis induced by surface plasmon resonance

Magnetic C-isolated Ag-C-Co sandwich sphere nanostructures have been fabricated through a synchronous growth and assembly process, in which the outer Co sphere-shells assemble around the surface of synchronously grown Ag-C sphere-cores. Raman and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy studies show that the covering of Co shell on Ag-C sphere cores weakens the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of Ag-C sphere cores. Owing to its ferromagnetic behaviour, the as-prepared C-isolated Ag-C-Co sandwich nanospheres can be easily separated and recycled by an external magnet field for application. Compared with Ag-Co, C-Co, and Co nanospheres of the same size, the resultant magnetic Ag-C-Co sandwich nanospheres exhibit markedly high catalytic activity toward ammonia borane hydrolytic dehydrogenation at atmospheric pressure and room temperature, which is induced by SPR from C-isolated sandwich structural and electronic synergistic effects.
