Abstract
The coordination and organometallic chemistry of the f-elements, that is group 3, lanthanide, and actinide ions, supported by nitrogen ligands, e.g. amides, imides, and nitrides, has become well developed over many decades. In contrast, the corresponding f-element chemisty with the heavier pnictogen analogues phosphorus, arsenic, antimony, and bismuth has remained significantly underdeveloped, due largely to a lack of suitable synthetic methodologies and also the inherent hard(f-element)-soft(heavier pnictogen) acid-base mismatch, but has begun to flourish in recent years. Here, we review complexes containing chemical bonds between the f-elements and heavy pnictogens from phosphorus to bismuth that spans five decades of endeavour. We focus on complexes whose identity has been unambiguously established by structural authentication by single-crystal X-ray diffraction with respect to their synthesis, characterisation, bonding, and reactivity, in order to provide a representative overview of this burgeoning area. By highlighting that much has been achieved but that there is still much to do this review aims to inspire, focus and guide future efforts in this area.

Abstract
Radical-bridged diuranium complexes are desirable for their potential high exchange coupling and single molecule magnet (SMM) behavior, but remain rare. Here we report for the first time radical-bridged diuranium(iv) and diuranium(iii) complexes. Reaction of [U{N(SiMe3)2}3] with 2,2′-bipyrimidine (bpym) resulted in the formation of the bpym-bridged diuranium(iv) complex [{((Me3Si)2N)3UIV}2(μ-bpym2−)], 1. Reduction with 1 equiv. KC8 reduces the complex, affording [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][{((Me3Si)2N)3U}2(μ-bpym)], 2, which is best described as a radical-bridged UIII–bpym˙−–UIII complex. Further reduction of 1 with 2 equiv. KC8, affords [K(2.2.2-cryptand)]2[{((Me3Si)2N)3UIII}2(μ-bpym2−)], 3. Addition of AgBPh4 to complex 1 resulted in the oxidation of the ligand, yielding the radical-bridged complex [{((Me3Si)2N)3UIV}2(μ-bpym˙−)][BPh4], 4. X-ray crystallography, electrochemistry, susceptibility data, EPR and DFT/CASSCF calculations are in line with their assignments. In complexes 2 and 4 the presence of the radical-bridge leads to slow magnetic relaxation. Convenient routes to dinuclear complexes of uranium where two uranium centers are bridged by the redox-active ligand bpym were identified resulting in unique and stable radical-bridged dimetallic complexes of U(iii) and U(iv) showing SMM behaviour.![]()

Abstract
Room temperature reaction of the uranium(iv)-carbene [U{C(SiMe3)(PPh2)}(BIPMTMS)(μ-Cl)Li(TMEDA)(μ-TMEDA)0.5]2 (1, BIPMTMS = C(PPh2NSiMe3)2) with white phosphorus (P4) produces the organo-P5 compound [P5{C(SiMe3)(PPh2)}2][Li(TMEDA)2] (2) and the uranium(iv)-methanediide [U{BIPMTMS}{Cl}{μ-Cl}2{Li(TMEDA)}] (3). This is an unprecedented example of cooperative metal-carbene P4 activation/insertion into a metal-carbon double bond and also an actinide complex reacting with P4 to directly form an organophosphorus species. Conducting the reaction at low temperature permits the isolation of the diuranium(iv) complex [{U(BIPMTMS)([μ-η2:η2-P2]C[SiMe3][PPh2])}2] (4), which then converts to 2 and 3. Thus, surprisingly, in contrast to all other actinide P4 reactivity, although this reaction produces catenation overall it proceeds via P4 cleavage to functionalised P2 units. Hence, this work establishes a proof of concept synthetic cycle for direct fragmentation, catenation, and functionalisation of P4.

Abstract
A series of uranium(VI)-acetylide complexes of the general formula UVI(O)(C≡C-C6H4-R)[N(SiMe3)2]3, with variation of the para substituent (R = NMe2, OMe, Me, Ph, H, Cl) on the aryl(acetylide) ring, was prepared. These compounds were analyzed by 13C NMR spectroscopy, which showed that the acetylide carbon bound to the uranium(VI) center, U- C≡C-Ar, was shifted strongly downfield, with δ(13C) values ranging from 392.1 to 409.7 ppm for Cl and NMe2 substituted complexes, respectively. These extreme high-frequency 13C resonances are attributed to large negative paramagnetic (σpara) and relativistic spin-orbit (σSO) shielding contributions, associated with extensive U(5f) and C(2s) orbital contributions to the U-C bonding in title complexes. The trend in the 13C chemical shift of the terminal acetylide carbon is opposite that observed in the series of parent (aryl)acetylenes, due to shielding effects of the para substituent. The 13C chemical shifts of the acetylide carbon instead correlate with DFT computed U-C bond lengths and corresponding QTAIM delocalization indices or Wiberg bond orders. SQUID magnetic susceptibility measurements were indicative of the Van Vleck temperature independent paramagnetism (TIP) of the uranium(VI) complexes, suggesting a magnetic field-induced mixing of the singlet ground-state (f0) of the U(VI) ion with low-lying (thermally inaccessible) paramagnetic excited states (involved also in the perturbation-theoretical treatment of the unusually large paramagnetic and SO contributions to the 13C shifts). Thus, together with reported data, we demonstrate that the sensitive 13C NMR shifts serve as a direct, simple, and accessible measure of uranium(VI)-carbon bond covalency.

Abstract
We demonstrated density functional calculations of Eu(iii) and Am(iii) complexes with pnictogen-donor (X) ligands, (CH3)2X-CH2-CH2-X(CH3)2 (X = N, P, As and Sb). We investigated the optimized structures of the complexes and the Gibbs energy differences in the complex formation reactions. The results indicated that the N- and P-donor ligands exhibit Am(iii) ion selectivity over Eu(iii) ions; especially, the P-donor ligand showed the highest selectivity. The tendency of the Am(iii)/Eu(iii) selectivity by the pnictogen-donor ligands was found to be comparable to that of the soft acid classification in the hard and soft acids and bases rule. Mulliken's spin population analysis indicated that the bonding properties between the metal ion and the pnictogen atoms correlated with the Am(iii)/Eu(iii) selectivity. In particular, the participation of f-orbital electrons of the metal ion in the covalency was indicated to play an important role in the selectivity.

Abstract
Thorium chalcogenolates Th(ER)4 react with 2,2'-bipyridine (bipy) to form complexes with the stoichiometry (bipy)2Th(ER)4 (E = S, Se; R = Ph, C6F5). All four compounds have been isolated and characterized by spectroscopic methods and low-temperature single crystal X-ray diffraction. Two of the products, (bipy)2Th(SC6F5)4 and (bipy)2Th(SeC6F5)4, crystallize with lattice solvent, (bipy)2Th(SPh)4 crystallizes with no lattice solvent, and the selenolate (bipy)2Th(SePh)4 crystallizes in two phases, with and without lattice solvent. In all four compounds the available volume for coordination bounded by the two bipy ligands is large enough to allow significant conformational flexibility of thiolate or selenolate ligands. 77Se NMR confirms that the structures of the selenolate products are the same in pyridine solution and in the solid state. Attempts to prepare analogous derivatives with 2,2',6',2''-terpyridine (terpy) were successful only in the isolation of (terpy)(py)Th(SPh)4, the first terpy compound of thorium. These materials are thermochromic, with color attributed to ligand-to-ligand charge transfer excitations.

Abstract
The reactions of NbCl4 with diphosphine ligands o-C6H4(PMe2)2, Me2PCH2CH2PMe2 or Et2PCH2CH2PEt2 in a 1 : 2 molar ratio in MeCN solution produced eight-coordinate [NbCl4(diphosphine)2]. [NbBr4(diphosphine)2] (diphosphine = o-C6H4(PMe2)2 or Me2PCH2CH2PMe2) were made similarly from NbBr4. X-ray crystal structures show that [NbCl4{o-C6H4(PMe2)2}2] has a dodecahedral geometry, but the complexes with dimethylene-backboned diphosphines are distorted square antiprisms. The Nb-P distances and <P-Nb-P angles are very similar in the two types, but Nb-Cl distances are ∼0.1 Å longer in the square antiprismatic complexes. These paramagnetic (d(1)) complexes were also characterised by microanalysis, magnetic measurements, IR and UV-visible spectroscopy. Using a 1 : 1 molar ratio of NbCl4 : diphosphine (diphosphine = Me2PCH2CH2PMe2, Et2PCH2CH2PEt2, Cy2PCH2CH2PCy2 and Ph2PCH2CH2CH2PPh2) afforded [NbCl4(diphosphine)], and [NbBr4(Me2PCH2CH2PMe2)] was obtained similarly. These 1 : 1 complexes are unstable in solution, preventing X-ray crystallographic study, but based upon their diamagnetism, IR, UV-visible and (31)P{(1)H} NMR spectra, they are formulated as halide-bridged dimers [(diphosphine)X2Nb(μ-X)4NbX2(diphosphine)], with single Nb-Nb bonds and chelating diphosphines. The Nb(iv) complexes are prone to hydrolysis and oxidation in solution and the structures of the Nb(v) complexes [NbBr4(Me2PCH2CH2PMe2)2][NbOBr4(MeCN)] with a dodecahedral cation, and [{NbOCl3{Et2P(CH2)2PEt2}}2{μ-Et2P(CH2)2PEt2}] which contains seven-coordinate Nb(v) centres with a symmetrical diphosphine bridge, are reported. The structure of niobium tetrabromide, conveniently made from NbCl4 and BBr3, is a chain polymer with edge-linked NbBr6 octahedra and alternating long and short Nb-Nb distances, the latter ascribed to Nb-Nb bonds.

Heterobimetallic
complexes containing short uranium–group
10 metal bonds have been prepared from monometallic IUIV(OArP-κ2O,P)3 (2) {[ArPO]− = 2-tert-butyl-4-methyl-6-(diphenylphosphino)phenolate}.
The U–M bond in IUIV(μ-OArP-1κ1O,2κ1P)3M0, M = Ni (3–Ni), Pd (3–Pd), and Pt (3–Pt), has been
investigated by experimental and DFT computational methods. Comparisons
of 3–Ni with two further U–Ni complexes
XUIV(μ-OArP-1κ1O,2κ1P)3Ni0, X = Me3SiO (4) and F (5), was also possible via iodide substitution. All complexes were
characterized by variable-temperature NMR spectroscopy, electrochemistry,
and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The U–M bonds are significantly
shorter than any other crystallographically characterized d–f-block
bimetallic, even though the ligand flexes to allow a variable U–M
separation. Excellent agreement is found between the experimental
and computed structures for 3–Ni and 3–Pd. Natural population analysis and natural localized molecular orbital
(NLMO) compositions indicate that U employs both 5f and 6d orbitals
in covalent bonding to a significant extent. Quantum theory of atoms-in-molecules
analysis reveals U–M bond critical point properties typical
of metallic bonding and a larger delocalization index (bond order)
for the less polar U–Ni bond than U–Pd. Electrochemical
studies agree with the computational analyses and the X-ray structural
data for the U–X adducts 3–Ni, 4, and 5. The data show a trend in uranium–metal
bond strength that decreases from 3–Ni down to 3–Pt and suggest that exchanging the iodide for a fluoride
strengthens the metal–metal bond. Despite short U–TM
(transition metal) distances, four other computational approaches
also suggest low U–TM bond orders, reflecting highly transition
metal localized valence NLMOs. These are more so for 3–Pd than 3–Ni, consistent with slightly larger U–TM
bond orders in the latter. Computational studies of the model systems
(PH3)3MU(OH)3I (M = Ni, Pd) reveal
longer and weaker unsupported U–TM bonds vs 3.

Abstract
A tetravalent uranium compound with a radical azobenzene ligand, namely, [{(SiMe2 NPh)3 -tacn}U(IV) (η(2) -N2 Ph2 (.) )] (2), was obtained by one-electron reduction of azobenzene by the trivalent uranium compound [U(III) {(SiMe2 NPh)3 -tacn}] (1). Compound 2 was characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and (1) H NMR, IR, and UV/Vis/NIR spectroscopy. The magnetic properties of 2 and precursor 1 were studied by static magnetization and ac susceptibility measurements, which for the former revealed single-molecule magnet behaviour for the first time in a mononuclear U(IV) compound, whereas trivalent uranium compound 1 does not exhibit slow relaxation of the magnetization at low temperatures. A first approximation to the magnetic behaviour of these compounds was attempted by combining an effective electrostatic model with a phenomenological approach using the full single-ion Hamiltonian.

Abstract
The reaction of Na10[α-SiW9O34] with tetravalent metallic cations such as 4f ((NH4)2Ce(NO3)6), 5d (HfCl4), or 5f (UCl4 and Th(NO3)4) in a pH 4.7 sodium acetate buffer solution leads to the formation of four sandwich-type polyoxometalates [Ce4(μ(3)-O)2(SiW9O34)2(CH3COO)2](10-) (1), [U4(μ(3)-O)2(SiW9O34)2(CH3COO)2](10-) (2), [Th3(μ(3)-O)(μ(2)-OH)3(SiW9O34)2](13-) (3), and [Hf3(μ(2)-OH)3(SiW9O34)2](11-) (4). All four compounds consist of a polynuclear cluster fragment stabilized by two [α-SiW9O34](10-) polyanions. Compounds 1 and 2 are isostructural with a tetranuclear core (Ce4, U4), while compound 3 presents a trinuclear Th3 core bearing a μ(3)-O-centered bridge. It is an unprecedented configuration in the case of the thorium(IV) cluster. Compound 4 also possesses a trinuclear Hf3 core but with the absence of the μ(3)-O bridge. The molecules have been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, (183)W and (29)Si nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, infrared (IR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray (SEM/EDX) analysis.

Abstract
[BMIm]4[AgMo10Cl35] is prepared by reaction of MoCl5 and elemental silver in the ionic liquid [BMIm][AlCl4] ([BMIm(+)]: 1-butyl-4-methylimidazolium). Surprisingly, elemental silver is oxidized under these conditions. The title compound contains a new wheel-shaped [Mo10Cl35](5-) chlorido molybdenum(iii) species with five pairs of Mo-Mo bonds. The Mo-Mo distances are found to be 263 pm on average. The [Mo10Cl35](5-) wheels exhibit a maximum opening of 558 pm in diameter. They are interlinked via Ag(+) to form infinite [AgMo10Cl35](4-) chains. The title compound is characterized by single crystal structure analysis, EDX, FT-IR and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The wheel-type structure and Ag(+) linkage to infinite chains are a new aspect of halogenido metalates and low-valence molybdenum compounds.

Abstract
A family of cyclopentadienyl uranium complexes supported by the redox-active pyridine(diimine) ligand, (Mes)PDI(Me) ((Mes)PDI(Me) = 2,6-((Mes)N═CMe)2-C5H3N, Mes = 2,4,6-trimethylphenyl), has been synthesized. Using either Cp* or Cp(P) (Cp* = 1,2,3,4,5-pentamethylcyclopentadienide, Cp(P) = 1-(7,7-dimethylbenzyl)cyclopentadienide), uranium complexes of the type Cp(X)UI2((Mes)PDI(Me)) (1-Cp(X); X = * or P), Cp(X)UI((Mes)PDI(Me)) (2-Cp(X)), and Cp(X)U((Mes)PDI(Me))(THF)n (3-Cp(X); *, n = 1; P, n = 0) were isolated and characterized. The series was generated via ligand centered reduction events; thus the extent of (Mes)PDI(Me) reduction varies in each case, but the uranium(IV) oxidation state is maintained. Treating 2-Cp(X), which has a doubly reduced (Mes)PDI(Me), with furfural results in radical coupling between the substrate and (Mes)PDI(Me), leading to C-C bond formation to form Cp(X)UI((Mes)PDI(Me)-CHOC4H3O) (4-Cp(X)). Exposure of 3-Cp* and 3-Cp(P), which contain a triply reduced (Mes)PDI(Me) ligand, to benzaldehyde and benzophenone, respectively, results in the corresponding pinacolate complexes Cp*U(O2C2Ph2H2)((Mes)PDI(Me)) (5-Cp*) and Cp(P)U(O2C2Ph4)((Mes)PDI(Me)) (5-Cp(P)). The reducing equivalents required for this coupling are derived solely from the redox-active ligand, rather than the uranium center. Complexes 1-5 have been characterized by (1)H NMR and electronic absorption spectroscopies, and SQUID magnetometry was employed to confirm the mono(anionic) [(Mes)PDI(Me)](-) ligand in 1-Cp(P) and 5-Cp(P). Structural parameters of complexes 1-Cp(P), 2-Cp(X), 4-Cp*, and 5-Cp(X) have been elucidated by X-ray crystallography.
