Molybdenum(VI) Complexes of a 2,2′-Biphenyl-bridged Bis(amidophenoxide): Competition between Metal–Ligand and Metal–Amidophenoxide π Bonding

High-valent osmium iminoxolene complexes

2-(Arylamino)-4,6-di-tert-butylphenols containing 4-substituted phenyl groups (RapH2) react with oxobis(ethylene glycolato)osmium(vi) in acetone to give square pyramidal bis(amidophenoxide)oxoosmium(vi) complexes. A mono-amidophenoxide complex is observed as an intermediate in these reactions. Reactions in dichloromethane yield the diolate (Hap)2Os(OCH2CH2O). Both the glycolate and oxo complex are converted to the corresponding cis-dichloride complex on treatment with chlorotrimethylsilane. The novel bis(aminophenol) ligand EganH4, containing an ethylene glycol dianthranilate bridge, forms the chelated bis(amidophenoxide) complex (Egan)OsO, where the two nitrogen atoms of the tetradentate ligand bind in the trans positions of the square pyramid. Structural and spectroscopic features of the complexes are described well by an osmium(vi)-amidophenoxide formulation, with the amount of π donation from ligand to metal increasing markedly as the co-ligands change from oxo to diolate to dichloride. In the oxo-bis(amidophenoxides), the symmetry of the ligand π orbitals results in only one effective π donor interaction, splitting the energy of the two osmium-oxo π* orbitals and rendering the osmium-oxo bonding appreciably anisotropic.

Highly covalent metal-ligand π bonding in chelated bis- and tris(iminoxolene) complexes of osmium and ruthenium

The bis(aminophenol) 2,2'-biphenylbis(3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-hydroxyphenylamine) (ClipH₄) forms trans-(Clip)Os(py)₂ upon aerobic reaction of the ligand with {(p-cymene)OsCl₂}₂ in the presence of pyridine and triethylamine. A more oxidized species, cis-β-(Clip)Os(OCH₂CH₂O), is formed from reaction of the ligand with the osmium(vi) complex OsO(OCH₂CH₂O)₂, and reacts with Me₃SiCl to give the chloro complex cis-β-(Clip)OsCl₂. Octahedral osmium and ruthenium tris-iminoxolene complexes are formed from the chelating ligand tris(2-(3',5'-di-tert-butyl-2'-hydroxyphenyl)amino-4-methylphenyl)amine (MeClampH₆) on aerobic reaction with divalent metal precursors. The complexes' structural and electronic features are well described using a simple bonding model that emphasizes the covalency of the π bonding between the metal and iminoxolene ligands rather than attempting to dissect the parts into discrete oxidation states. Emphasizing the continuity of bonding between disparate complexes, the structural data from a variety of Os and Ru complexes show good correlations to π bond order, and the response of the intraligand bond distances to the bond order can be analyzed to illuminate the polarity of the bonding between metal and the redox-active orbital on the iminoxolenes. The osmium compounds'π bonding orbitals are about 40% metal-centered and 60% ligand-centered, with the ruthenium compounds' orbitals about 65% metal-centered and 35% ligand-centered.

When Do Strongly Coupled Diradicals Show Strongly Coupled Reactivity? Thermodynamics and Kinetics of Hydrogen Atom Transfer Reactions of Palladium and Platinum Bis(iminosemiquinone) Complexes

The 2,2'-biphenylene-bridged bis(iminosemiquinone) complexes ( ^tBuClip)M [ ^tBuClipH₄ = 4,4'-di- tert-butyl- N, N'-bis(3,5-di- tert-butyl-2-hydroxyphenyl)-2,2'-diaminobiphenyl; M = Pd, Pt] can be reduced to the bis(aminophenoxide) complexes ( ^tBuClipH₂)M by reaction with hydrazobenzene (M = Pd) or by catalytic hydrogenation (M = Pt). The palladium complex with one aminophenoxide ligand and one iminosemiquinone ligand, ( ^tBuClipH)Pd, is generated by comproportionation of ( ^tBuClip)Pd with ( ^tBuClipH₂)Pd in a process that is both slow (0.06 M^-1 s^-1 in toluene at 23 °C) and only modestly favorable ( K_com = 1.9 in CDCl₃), indicating that both N-H bonds have essentially the same bond strength. The mono(iminoquinone) complex ( ^tBuClipH)Pt has not been observed, indicating that the platinum analogue shows no tendency to comproportionate ( K_com < 0.1). The average bond dissociation free energies (BDFE) of the complexes have been established by equilibration with suitably substituted hydrazobenzenes, and the palladium bis(iminosemiquinone) is markedly more oxidizing than the platinum compound, with hydrogen transfer from ( ^tBuClipH₂)Pt to ( ^tBuClip)Pd occurring with Δ G° = -8.9 kcal mol^-1. The palladium complex ( ^tBuClipH₂)Pd reacts with nitroxyl radicals in two observable steps, with the first hydrogen transfer taking place slightly faster than the second. In the platinum analogue, the first hydrogen transfer is much slower than the second, presumably because the N-H bond in the monoradical complex ( ^tBuClipH)Pt is unusually weak. Using driving force-rate correlations, it is estimated that this bond has a BDFE of 55.1 kcal mol^-1, which is 7.1 kcal mol^-1 weaker than that of the first N-H bond in ( ^tBuClipH₂)Pt. The two radical centers in the platinum, but not the palladium, complex thus act in concert with each other and display a strong thermodynamic bias toward two-electron reactivity. The greater thermodynamic and kinetic coupling in the platinum complex is attributed to the stronger metal-ligand π interactions in this compound.

Nickel(II) Complex of a Hexadentate Ligand with Two o-Iminosemiquinonato(1-) π-Radical Units and Its Monocation and Dication

Aerobic reaction of a hexadentate redox-active o-aminophenol-based ligand, H4L(3) = N,N'-bis(2-hydroxy-3,5-di-tert-butylphenyl)-2,2'-diamino(diphenyldithio)-ethane, in CH3OH with Ni(II)(O2CCH3)2·4H2O and Et3N afforded isolation of a reddish-brown crystalline solid [Ni(L(3))] 1. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) experiment exhibits two oxidative responses at E1/2 = 0.09 and 0.53 V vs SCE (saturated calomel electrode). Chemical oxidation of 1 in air by [Fe(III)(η(5)-C5H5)2][PF6] and AgBF4 in CH2Cl2 led to the isolation of one-electron oxidized species [1](1+) as purple [1][PF6]·CH2Cl2 and two-electron oxidized species [1](2+) as dark purple [1][BF4]2·CH2Cl2, respectively. X-ray crystallographic analysis at 100(2) K unambiguously established that the ligand is present in [Ni(II){(L(ISQ)O,N)(•-)}{(L(ISQ)O,N)(•-)}{(LS,S)(0)}] 1, [Ni(II){(L(IBQ)O,N)(0)}{(L(ISQ)O,N)(•-)}{(LS,S)(0)}][PF6]·CH2Cl2, and [Ni(II){(L(IBQ)O,N)(0)}{(L(IBQ)O,N)(0)}{(LS,S)(0)}][BF4]2·CH2Cl2, as monoanionic o-iminosemiquinonate(1-) π-radical (Srad = 1/2) (L(ISQ))(•-) and neutral o-iminoquinone (L(IBQ))(0) redox-levels. Complexes 1, [1][PF6]·CH2Cl2, and [1][BF4]2·CH2Cl2 possess an S = 2, 3/2, and 1 ground-state, respectively, established by temperature-dependent (2-300 K) magnetic behavior of 1 and [1][PF6]·CH2Cl2, and a μeff value of [1][BF4]2·CH2Cl2 at 300 K. Both 1 and [1][PF6]·CH2Cl2 exhibit ferromagnetic exchange-coupling between the two electrons of Ni(II) and two/one ligand π-radicals, respectively. The redox processes are shown to be ligand-based. Spectroscopic and redox properties, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations at the CAM-B3LYP-level of theory adequately describe the electronic structure of 1, [1](1+), and [1](2+). The observed UV-vis-NIR absorptions for 1, [1][PF6]·CH2Cl2, and [1][BF4]2·CH2Cl2 have been assigned, based on time-dependent (TD)-DFT calculations.

Redox activity and π bonding in a tripodal seven-coordinate molybdenum(vi) tris(amidophenolate)

A tripodal seven-coordinate tris(amidophenolato)molybdenum(vi) complex shows strong ligand-to-metal π donation (40 kcal mol⁻¹ per π bond) and undergoes facile ligand-centered oxidation.

Mixed amidophenolate-catecholates of molybdenum(VI)

The dioxomolybdenum(vi) complex ((t)BuClipH2)MoO2 ((t)BuClipH4 = 4,4'-di-tert-butyl-N,N'-bis(3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-hydroxyphenyl)-2,2'-diaminobiphenyl) reacts with 3,5-di-tert-butylcatechol to form oxo-free ((t)BuClip)Mo(3,5-(t)Bu2Cat). The bis(amidophenoxide)-monocatecholate complex is monomeric and exhibits a cis-β geometry in the solid state. Variable-temperature NMR data are consistent with two fluxional processes, one that interconverts several geometric isomers at low temperature, and a second that interchanges the ends of the (t)BuClip ligand at ambient temperatures. The high-temperature fluxional process can be explained by a single Bailar trigonal twist coupled with atropisomerization of the chiral diaminobiaryl backbone. Addition of excess catechol to ((t)BuClipH2)MoO2 results in formation of a dimolybdenum mono-oxo complex ((t)BuClip)Mo(μ-3,5-(t)Bu2Cat)2Mo(O)(3,5-(t)Bu2Cat). This complex, which contains a seven-coordinate bis(amidophenoxide)molybdenum center and a six-coordinate oxomolybdenum center, represents a structural hybrid between dimeric oxomolybdenumbis(catecholate) and molybdenum tris(catecholate) complexes. Both mono- and dimolybdenum complexes are best formulated as containing Mo(vi), but there is structural evidence for significant π donation from the amidophenolates. ((t)BuClip)Mo(3,5-(t)Bu2Cat) binds pyridine to form a mixture of isomeric seven-coordinate adducts. The Lewis acidity of the mixed amidophenoxide-catecholate appears to be lower than its tris(catecholate) or oxobis(amidophenoxide) analogues, which manifests itself principally in relatively slow binding of pyridine to the six-coordinate complex (k = 8 × 10(4) L mol(-1) s(-1) at 0 °C) rather than in the rate of dissociation of pyridine from the seven-coordinate adduct.

Multiple, disparate redox pathways exhibited by a tris(pyrrolido)ethane iron complex

Iron(III) complexes of the tris(pyrrolide)ethane trianion have been synthesized by reaction of one- and two-electron oxidants with [(tpe)Fe(THF)][Li(THF)4] (tpe = tris(5-mesitylpyrrolyl)ethane). X-ray crystallography, (57)Fe Mössbauer, (1)H NMR and EPR spectroscopy, SQUID magnetometry, and density functional theory calculations were employed to rigorously establish the iron 3+ oxidation state. All oxidants employed are proposed to operate via an inner-sphere electron transfer mechanism. Dialkyl peroxides and dibenzyldisulfide served to oxidize iron by one electron, and group transfer of an aryl nitrene unit to the Fe(2+) starting material resulted in formation of Fe(3+) amido species following H-atom abstraction by a presumed nitrenoid intermediate. Single electron transfer to and from diphenyldiazoalkane was also observed to yield a diphenyldiazomethanyl radical anion antiferromagnetically coupled to the S = 5/2 Fe(3+). Isolation of Fe(3+) complexes of tpe, in comparison with previous results wherein the tpe ligand was the redox active moiety, presents an unusual juxtaposition of two noncommunicating redox reservoirs, each accessible via different reaction pathways (namely, inner- and outer-sphere electron transfer).

Metrical oxidation states of 2-amidophenoxide and catecholate ligands: structural signatures of metal-ligand π bonding in potentially noninnocent ligands

Catecholates and 2-amidophenoxides are prototypical "noninnocent" ligands which can form metal complexes where the ligands are best described as being in the monoanionic (imino)semiquinone or neutral (imino)quinone oxidation state instead of their closed-shell dianionic form. Through a comprehensive analysis of structural data available for compounds with these ligands in unambiguous oxidation states (109 amidophenolates, 259 catecholates), the well-known structural changes in the ligands with oxidation state can be quantified. Using these correlations, an empirical "metrical oxidation state" (MOS) which gives a continuous measure of the apparent oxidation state of the ligand can be determined based on least-squares fitting of its C-C, C-O, and C-N bond lengths to this single parameter (a simple procedure for doing so is provided via a spreadsheet in the Supporting Information). High-valent d(0) metal complexes, particularly those of vanadium(V) and molybdenum(VI), have ligands with unexpectedly positive, and generally nonintegral, MOS values. The structural effects in these complexes are attributed not to electron transfer, but rather to amidophenoxide- or catecholate-to-metal π bonding, an interpretation supported by the systematic variation of the MOS values as a function of the degree of competition with the other π-donating groups in the structures.
