New Cyclopentenyl-Linked [NPN] Ligands and Their Coordination Chemistry with Zirconium: Synthesis of a Dinuclear Side-On-Bound Dinitrogen Complex

Using Catalysts To Make Catalysts: Titanium-Catalyzed Hydroamination To Access P,N-Ligands for Assembling Catalysts in One Pot

Using a diamido-bis(amidate) titanium precatalyst, the hydroamination of alkynylphosphines afforded phosphinoenamine products. After reduction, 2-aminophosphines are prepared in excellent yield and on gram scale. A broad variety of alkynylphosphines and primary amines with different electronic and steric features are tolerated in this sequential transformation, enabling the rapid assembly of a collection of ligands. Additionally, intermediate phosphinoenamines can be used directly as proligands for coordination to transition metals using protonolysis or salt metathesis reactions. These transformations result in easy-to-use one pot protocols to prepare metal P,N-complexes for catalysis or small molecule activation.

η(6) -Arene-Zirconium-PNP-Pincer Complexes: Mechanism of Their Hydrogenolytic Formation and Their Reactivity as Zirconium(II) Synthons

The cyclometalated monobenzyl complexes [(Cbzdiphos(R) -CH)ZrBnX] 1 (iPr) Cl and 1 (Ph) I reacted with dihydrogen (10 bar) to yield the η(6) -toluene complexes [(Cbzdiphos(R) )Zr(η(6) -tol)X] 2 (iPr) Cl and 2 (Ph) I (cbzdiphos=1,8-bis(phosphino)-3,6-di-tert-butyl-9H-carbazole). The arene complexes were also found to be directly accessible from the triiodide [(Cbzdiphos(Ph) )ZrI3 ] through an in situ reaction with a dibenzylmagnesium reagent and subsequent hydrogenolysis, as exemplified for the η(6) -mesitylene complex [(Cbzdiphos(Ph) )Zr(η(6) -mes)I] (3 (Ph) I). The tolyl-ring in 2 (iPr) Cl adopts a puckered arrangement (fold angle 23.3°) indicating significant arene-1,4-diido character. Deuterium labeling experiments were consistent with an intramolecular reaction sequence after the initial hydrogenolysis of a Zr-C bond by a σ-bond metathesis. A DFT study of the reaction sequence indicates that hydrogenolysis by σ-bond metathesis first occurs at the cyclometalated ancillary ligand giving a hydrido-benzyl intermediate, which subsequently reductively eliminates toluene that then coordinates to the Zr atom as the reduced arene ligand. Complex 2 (Ph) I was reacted with 2,6-diisopropylphenyl isocyanide giving the deep blue, diamagnetic Zr(II) -diisocyanide complex [(Cbzdiphos(Ph) )Zr(CNDipp)2 I] (4 (Ph) I). DFT modeling of 4 (Ph) I demonstrated that the HOMO of the complex is primarily located as a "lone pair on zirconium", with some degree of back-bonding into the C≡N π* bond, and the complex is thus most appropriately described as a zirconium(II) species. Reaction of 2 (Ph) I with trimethylsilylazide (N3 TMS) and 2 (iPr) Cl with 1-azidoadamantane (N3 Ad) resulted in the formation of the imido complexes [(Cbzdiphos(R) )Zr=NR'(X)] 5 (iPr) Cl-NAd and 5 (Ph) I-NTMS, respectively. Reaction of 2 (iPr) Cl with azobenzene led to N-N bond scission giving 6 (iPr) Cl, in which one of the NPh-fragments is coupled with the carbazole nitrogen to form a central η(2) -bonded hydrazide(-1), whereas the other NPh-fragment binds to zirconium acting as an imido-ligand. Finally, addition of pyridine to 2 (iPr) Cl yielded the dark purple complex [(Cbzdiphos(iPr) )Zr(bpy)Cl] (7 (iPr) Cl) through a combination of CH-activation and C-C-coupling. The structural data and UV/Vis spectroscopic properties of 7 (iPr) Cl indicate that the bpy (bipyridine) may be regarded as a (dianionic) diamido-type ligand.

Diamidophosphines with six-membered chelates and their coordination chemistry with group 4 metals: development of a trimethylene-methane-tethered [PN2]-type "molecular claw"

The coordination chemistry of the phosphine-tethered diamidophosphine ligands PhP(CH2CH2CH2NHPh)2 (pr[NPN]H2) and PhP(1,2-CH2-C6H4-NHSiMe3)2 (bn[NPN]H2) featuring six-membered N–C3–P chelates was explored with group 4 metals, which allowed for the consecutive development of a new trimethylene-methane-tethered [PN2] scaffold. In the case of the propylene-linked system pr[NPN]H2, access to the sparingly soluble dibenzyl derivative pr[NPN]ZrBn2 (3-Zr) was gained, while thermally sensitive zirconium and hafnium diiodo complexes bn[NPN]MI2 (5-M, M = Zr, Hf) were isolated in the case of the benzylene-linked derivative bn[NPN]H2. Despite the related phosphine-tethered backbone architectures of both of these ligands, their group 4 complexes were found to exhibit either C1-symmetric (bn[NPN]MX2) or averaged CS-symmetric (pr[NPN]MX2) structures in solution. To restrain the overall flexibility of these systems and thereby control the properties of the resulting complexes without disrupting the six-membered chelates, the new trimethylene-methane-tethered N,N′-di-(tert-butyl)-substituted [PN2]H2 protioligand was designed. This tripodal ligand system was prepared on a gram scale and its CS-symmetric dichloro complexes [PN2]MCl2 (6-M, M = Ti, Zr, Hf) were isolated subsequently. The benzene-soluble dibenzyl derivative [PN2]ZrBn2 (7-Zr) was synthesised as well and characterised by X-ray diffraction. These results are discussed not only in conjunction with the known [NPN]-coordinated group 4 complexes incorporating five-membered chelates, but also in the context of “molecular claws” that are related to the new [PN2] tripod.

Synthesis and reactions of a zirconium naphthalene complex bearing a tetraanionic C-capped triaryloxide ligand

N2 activation by an iron complex with a strong electron-donating iminophosphorane ligand

A new tridentate cyclopentane-bridged iminophosphorane ligand, N-(2-diisopropylphosphinophenyl)-P,P-diisopropyl-P-(2-(2,6-diisopropylphenylamido)cyclopent-1-enyl)phosphoranimine (NpNPiPr), was synthesized and used in the preparation of a diiron dinitrogen complex. The reaction of the iron complex FeBr(NpNPiPr) with KC8 under dinitrogen yielded the dinuclear dinitrogen Fe complex [Fe(NpNPiPr)]2(μ-N2), which was characterized by X-ray analysis and resonance Raman and NMR spectroscopies. The X-ray analysis revealed a diiron complex bridged by the dinitrogen molecule, with each metal center coordinated by an NpNPiPr ligand and dinitrogen in a trigonal-monopyramidal geometry. The N–N bond length is 1.184(6) Å, and resonance Raman spectra indicate that the N–N stretching mode ν(14N2/15N2) is 1755/1700 cm–1. The magnetic moment of [Fe(NpNPiPr)]2(μ-N2) in benzene-d6 solution, as measured by 1H NMR spectroscopy by the Evans method, is 6.91μB (S = 3). The Mössbauer spectrum at 78 K showed δ = 0.73 mm/s and ΔEQ = 1.83 mm/s. These findings suggest that the iron ions are divalent with a high-spin configuration and that the N2 molecule has (N═N)2– character. Density functional theory calculations performed on [Fe(NpNPiPr)]2(μ-N2) also suggested that the iron is in a high-spin divalent state and that the coordinated dinitrogen molecule is effectively activated by π back-donation from the two iron ions (dπ) to the dinitrogen molecule (πx* and πy*). This is supported by cooperation between a large negative charge on the iminophosphorane ligand and strong electron donation and effective orbital overlap between the iron dπ orbitals and N2 π* orbitals supplied by the phosphine ligand.

Cleavage of an aryl carbon–nitrogen bond of a phosphazido iron(ii) complex promoted by hydride metathesis

A tripodal benzylene-linked trisamidophosphine ligand scaffold: synthesis and coordination chemistry with group(IV) metals

A new tripodal trisamidophosphine ligand (1) based on the trisbenzylphosphine backbone has been synthesized in three steps starting from NaPH2 and phthaloyl-protected 2-aminobenzyl bromide. At elevated temperatures, 1 reacts directly with M(NMe2)4 (M = Zr, Hf) to afford the dimethylamido complexes [PN3]M(NMe2) (M = Zr, Hf) (2), which are easily converted into the corresponding triflates [PN3]MOTf (M = Zr, Hf) (3) via reaction with triethylsilyl trifluoromethanesulfonate. The related titanium chloro complex [PN3]TiCl (4-Ti) is obtained from 1 and Bn3TiCl via protonolysis. Triple deprotonation of 1 with n-butyllithium affords the tris-lithium salt Li3[PN3] (1-Li), which serves as a common starting material for the preparation of all the group(IV) chlorides [PN3]MCl (M = Ti, Zr, Hf) (4). Upon treatment of 4-Ti with Bn2Mg(thf)2, formation of a benzyltitanium species is observed, which is converted cleanly into a ligand-CH-activated species (5-Ti).
