Influence of Second Coordination Sphere Hydroxyl Groups on the Reactivity of Copper(I) Complexes

Selective Metal-ion Complexation of a Biomimetic Calix[6]arene Funnel Cavity Functionalized with Phenol or Quinone

In the biomimetic context, many studies have evidenced the importance of the 1^st and 2^nd coordination sphere of a metal ion for controlling its properties. Here, we propose to evaluate a yet poorly explored aspect, which is the nature of the cavity that surrounds the metal labile site. Three calix[6]arene-based aza-ligands are compared, that differ only by the nature of cavity walls, anisole, phenol or quinone (L^OMe , L^OH and L^Q ). Monitoring ligand exchange of their Zn^II complexes evidenced important differences in the metal ion relative affinities for nitriles, halides or carboxylates. It also showed a possible sharp kinetic control on both, metal ion binding and ligand exchange. Hence, this study supports the observations reported on biological systems, highlighting that the substitution of an amino-acid residue of the enzyme active site, at remote distance of the metal ion, can have strong impacts on metal ion lability, substrate/product exchange or selectivity.

Synthesis, Structure, and Photophysical Properties of Yellow-Green and Blue Photoluminescent Dinuclear and Octanuclear Copper(I) Iodide Complexes with a Disilanylene-Bridged Bispyridine Ligand

The synthesis, structural, and photophysical investigations of CuI complexes with a disilanylene-bridged bispyridine ligand 1 are herein presented. Dinuclear (2) and ladder-like (3) octanuclear copper(I) complexes were straightforwardly prepared by exactly controlling the ratio of CuI/ligand 1. Single-crystal X-ray analysis confirmed that dinuclear complex 2 had no apparent π…π stacking whereas octanuclear complex 3 had π…π stacking in the crystal packing. In the solid state, the complexes display yellow-green (λ_em = 519 nm, Φ = 0.60, τ = 11 µs, 2) and blue (λ_em = 478 nm, Φ = 0.04, τ = 2.6 µs, 3) phosphorescence, respectively. The density functional theory calculations validate the differences in their optical properties. The difference in the luminescence efficiency between 2 and 3 is attributed to the presence of π…π stacking and the different luminescence processes.

Synthesis, Reactivity, and Catalytic Transfer Hydrogenation Activity of Ruthenium Complexes Bearing NNN Tridentate Ligands: Influence of the Secondary Coordination Sphere

By the introduction of -OH group(s) into different position(s) of 6-(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)-2,2'-bipyridine, several NNN-type ligands were synthesized and then introduced to ruthenium (Ru) centers by reactions with RuCl2(PPh3)3. In the presence of PPh3 or CO, these ruthenium complexes reacted with NH4PF6 in CH2Cl2 or CH3OH to give a series of ionic products 5-9. The reaction of Ru(L2)(PPh3)Cl2 (2) with CO generated a neutral complex [Ru(L2)(CO)Cl2] (10). In the presence of CH3ONa, 10 was further converted into complex [Ru(L2)(HOCH3)(CO)Cl] (11), in which there was a methanol molecule coordinating with ruthenium, as suggested by density functional theory calculations. The catalytic transfer hydrogenation activity of all of these new bifunctional metal-ligand complexes was tested. Dichloride complex 2 exhibits best activity, whereas carbonyl complexes 10 and 11 are efficient for selectively reducing 5-hexen-2-one, suggesting different hydrogenation mechanisms. The results reveal the dramatic influence for the reactivity and catalytic activity of the secondary coordination sphere in transition metal complexes.

Diiron Dithiolate Hydrides Complemented with Proton-Responsive Phosphine-Amine Ligands

The reaction of Fe₂(pdt)(CO)₆ with two equivalents of Ph₂PC₆H₄NH₂ (PNH₂) affords the amido hydride HFe₂(pdt)(CO)₂(PNH₂)(PNH) {[H1H]⁰, pdt^2- = CH₂(CH₂S^-)₂}. Isolated intermediates in this conversion include Fe₂(pdt)(CO)₅-(κ¹-PNH₂) and Fe₂(pdt)(CO)₄(κ²-PNH₂). X-ray crystallographic analysis of [H1H]⁰ shows that the chelating amino/amido-phosphine ligands occupy trans-dibasal positions. The ³¹P NMR spectrum indicates that [H1H]⁰ undergoes rapid proton exchange between the amido and amine centers. No exchange was observed for the hydride. Protonation of [H1H]⁰ gives [HFe₂(pdt)(CO)₂(PNH₂)₂]⁺ ([H₂1H]⁺), which contains two equivalent amino-phosphine ligands. Single-crystal X-ray crystallographic analysis of [H₂1H]⁺ also reveals hydrogen bonds between the exo amine protons with a THF molecule and BF₄. Deprotonation of [H1H]⁰ with potassium tert-butoxide gave [HFe₂(pdt)(CO)₂(PNH)₂]^- ([1H]^-), which was characterized spectroscopically. The complex has time-averaged C₂ symmetry with two amido-phosphine ligands. FTIR spectroscopic measurements show that υ_CO shifts by approximately 20 cm^-1 in the series [1H]^-, [H1H]⁰, and [H₂1H]⁺. These shifts are comparable to those seen for the S-protonation of the (NC)₂(CO)Fe-(μ-Scys)₂Ni(Scys)₂ site in the [NiFe]-hydrogenases.^[1].

Aryl Group Transfer from Tetraarylborato Anions to an Electrophilic Dicopper(I) Center and Mixed-Valence μ-Aryl Dicopper(I,II) Complexes

The synthesis of discrete, cationic binuclear μ-aryl dicopper complexes [Cu2(μ-η(1):η(1)-Ar)DPFN]X (Ar = C6H5, 3,5-(CF3)2C6H3, and C6F5; DPFN = 2,7-bis(fluoro-di(2-pyridyl)methyl)-1,8-naphthyridine; X = BAr4(-) and NTf2(-); Tf = SO2CF3) was achieved by treatment of a dicopper complex [Cu2(μ-η(1):η(1)-NCCH3)DPFN]X2 (X = PF6(-) and NTf2(-)) with tetraarylborates. Structural characterization revealed symmetrically bridging aryl groups, and (1)H NMR spectroscopy evidenced the same structure in solution at 24 °C. Electrochemical investigation of the resulting arylcopper complexes uncovered reversible redox events that led to the synthesis and isolation of a rare mixed-valence organocopper complex [Cu2(μ-η(1):η(1)-Ph)DPFN](NTf2)2 in high yield. The solid-state structure of the mixed-valence μ-phenyl complex exhibits inequivalent copper centers, despite a short Cu···Cu distance. Electronic and variable-temperature electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy of the mixed-valence μ-phenyl complex suggest that the degree of spin localization is temperature-dependent, with a high degree of spin localization observed at lower temperatures. Electronic structure calculations agree with the experimental results and suggest that the spin is localized almost entirely on one metal center.
