Chemical Modeling of Mixed Occupations and Site Preferences in Anisotropic Crystal Structures: Case of Complex Intermetallic Borides

Revisiting the quasi-aromaticity in polynuclear metal chalcogenide clusters and their derivative "cluster-assembly" crystalline structures

The concept of aromaticity is primarily invented to account for the high stability of conjugated organic compounds that possess a specific structural and chemical stability with (4n + 2) π electrons. In 1988, quasi-aromaticity was theoretically proposed for the Mo3S44+ core in the Mo3(μ3-S)(μ-S)3(χ-dtp)3(μ-dtp) L compound (χ: chelating ligand; dtp: (EtO)2PS2-) illustrated by canonical molecular orbitals. However, the origin of the quasi-aromaticity and chemical bonding remains ambiguous, lacking a thorough analysis in terms of stability and quantitative measurement of the aromatic character. Thus, in this work, we systematically reported the electronic structure and aromaticity of a series of polynuclear metal chalcogenide clusters [M3X4(H2O)9]4+ (M = Cr, Mo, W, and Sg; X = O, S, Se, and Te) to explore an efficient tool of NICS index values at specific points to measure the quasi-aromaticity and to figure out the (d-p-d) π three-center bonding as the predominant origin from the arrangement of three Mo atoms and three bridged X atoms. Interestingly, derived from the Mo3⋯S3 quasi-plane, the extended sandwich cluster model of a S3⋯Mo3⋯S3 (Mo3S6) structure can be seen as the seed unit of the popular MoS2 nanomaterials, with the resemblance between both molecular and periodic systems regarding geometries, electronic structures, and chemical bonding. Additionally, the highly symmetric Mo3S4 core in [Mo3X4(H2O)9]4+ can be arranged in a staggered and stacked manner to create the Mo6S82- building block, corresponding to the crystalline structures in BaMo6S8 Chevrel phases, albeit with slight deformations. But the neutral Mo6S8 cluster can be seen as the seed structure for the Mo3S4 periodic materials for the high resemblance in terms of geometry, electronic structures and chemical bonding. Drawing upon the observed similarities between cluster models and materials, we propose a new concept termed "cluster-assembly" materials. This concept involves the expansion from a high-symmetry and/or aromatic stable cluster seed unit to form the corresponding derivative materials, presenting an alternative paradigm for investigating crystals and enriching our comprehension of the stabilities exhibited by both gas-phase clusters and solid-state materials. The concept of "cluster-assembly" materials not only contributes to the formulation of design strategies for novel materials or stable clusters but also provides valuable insights into the extension of periodic aromaticity.

Metallic alloys at the edge of complexity: structural aspects, chemical bonding and physical properties

Complex metallic alloys belong to the vast family of intermetallic compounds and are hallmarked by extremely large unit cells and, in many cases, extensive crystallographic disorder. Early studies of complex intermetallics were focusing on the elucidation of their crystal structures and classification of the underlying building principles. More recently, ab initio computational analysis and detailed examination of the physical properties have become feasible and opened new perspectives for these materials. The present review paper provides a summary of the literature data on the reported compositions with exceptional structural complexity and their properties, and highlights the factors leading to the emergence of their crystal structures and the methods of characterization and systematization of these compounds.

Progress in Visualizing Atomic Size Effects with DFT-Chemical Pressure Analysis: From Isolated Atoms to Trends in AB5 Intermetallics

The notion of atomic size poses an important challenge to chemical theory: empirical evidence has long established that atoms have spatial requirements, which are summarized in tables of covalent, ionic, metallic, and van der Waals radii. Considerations based on these radii play a central role in the design and interpretation of experiments, but few methods are available to directly support arguments based on atomic size using electronic structure methods. Recently, we described an approach to elucidating atomic size effects using theoretical calculations: the DFT-Chemical Pressure analysis, which visualizes the local pressures arising in crystal structures from the interactions of atomic size and electronic effects. Using this approach, a variety of structural phenomena in intermetallic phases have already been understood in terms that provide guidance to new synthetic experiments. However, the applicability of the DFT-CP method to the broad range of the structures encountered in the solid state is limited by two issues: (1) the difficulty of interpreting the intense pressure features that appear in atomic core regions and (2) the need to divide space among pairs of interacting atoms in a meaningful way. In this article, we describe general solutions to these issues. In addressing the first issue, we explore the CP analysis of a test case in which no core pressures would be expected to arise: isolated atoms in large boxes. Our calculations reveal that intense core pressures do indeed arise in these virtually pressure-less model systems and allow us to trace the issue to the shifts in the voxel positions relative to atomic centers upon expanding and contracting the unit cell. A compensatory grid unwarping procedure is introduced to remedy this artifact. The second issue revolves around the difficulty of interpreting the pressure map in terms of interatomic interactions in a way that respects the size differences of the atoms and avoids artificial geometrical constraints. In approaching this challenge, we have developed a scheme for allocating the grid pressures to contacts inspired by the Hirshfeld charge analysis. Here, each voxel is allocated to the contact between the two atoms whose free atom electron densities show the largest values at that position. In this way, the differing sizes of atoms are naturally included in the division of space without resorting to empirical radii. The use of the improved DFT-CP method is illustrated through analyses of the applicability of radius ratio arguments to Laves phase structures and the structural preferences of AB5 intermetallics between the CaCu5 and AuBe5 structure types.
