Abstract
A series of bifunctional Ln(III)-based coordination polymers (CPs) {Ln(L)(DMA)2(NO3)}n [Ln(III) = Eu (1), Gd (2), and Dy (3); organic ligand H2L = 2,2'-(1,3,5,7-tetrahydroxyoctahydro-4,8-ethanopyrrolo[3,4-f]isoindole-2,6(1H,3H)-diyl)diacetic acid)] have been successfully synthesized. CPs 1-3 are isostructural and constructed from the dimeric Ln2 unit in which two adjacent LnIII ions are bridged by two μ3-carboxyl oxygens, and the Ln2 dimeric unit is connected by two NO3- ions, four DMA molecules, and four completely protonated L2- ligands forming a 2D layer structure. The magnetic research reveals that CP 2 shows a significant cryogenic magnetocaloric effect (-ΔSm = 22.9 J kg-1 K-1; T = 2.0 K and ΔH = 7.0 T), whereas CP 3 exhibits slow magnetic relaxation property under Hdc = 0 Oe field. Additionally, the luminescence explorations revealed that CP 1 can act as a recyclable luminescent probe for pollutant acetylacetone among various small organic solvent molecules, and the corresponding detection limit is 10-7 mol/L. More importantly, CP 1 also exhibits good catalytic performance in the cycloaddition reaction of CO2 and epoxides or cyanamides under mild conditions. As far as we know, CP 1 represents the first bifunctional lanthanide homogeneous catalyst that can efficiently catalyze the reaction of cyanamides/epoxides with CO2 simultaneously.

Abstract
The linking of two dinuclear macrocyclic units of large triphenolic hexaazamine by two carbonate anions results in the formation of dimeric tetranuclear Sm(III), Eu(III) and Gd(III) complexes. These complexes were initially obtained serendipitously by fixation of atmospheric carbon dioxide and subsequently obtained in a rational way by the application of carbonate salts. The X-ray crystal structures of these isomorphic complexes show highly folded conformation of the macrocycle. This type of conformation is also confirmed by 2D NMR spectra of the Sm(III) complex. The ESI-MS and NMR spectra reveal also that these carbonate complexes exist in solution in two different forms that are in a concentration-dependent dynamic equilibrium.

Abstract
Multifunctional single-molecule magnets (SMMs) have sparked great interest, but chiral SMMs obtained via spontaneous resolution are rarely reported. We synthesized a series of chiral trinuclear hepta-coordinate lanthanide complexes [ZnII3LnIII3] (1 for Dy, 2 for Tb, 3 for Gd, and 4 for Dy0.07Y0.93) using the achiral flexible ligand H2L (2,2'-[1,2-ethanediylbis[(ethylimino)methylene]]bis[3,5-dimethylphenol]). The complexes crystallize in the chiral P63 group space, and two enantiomers of different chirality are spontaneously resolved. Three [Zn(L)Cl]- anions utilize the two phenoxy oxygen atoms of each L2- to coordinate with three lanthanide ions, respectively, and the three hepta-coordinate D5h lanthanide ions are arranged in a triangle. The chirality comes from the propeller arrangement of the peripheral three bidentate chelate L2- ligands like octahedral [M(AA)3]n+/- (M = transition metal ions; AA = bidentate chelate ligands, e.g., 2,2'-bipyridine, 1,10-phenathroline, ethylenediamine, acac- or oxalate). Complex 1 exhibits an AC susceptibility signal and is frequency-dependent, which is typical of SMMs. Complex 4, doped with a large amount of diamagnetic Y(III) in Dy(III), exhibits Ueff = 48.3 K and τ0 = 4.4 × 10-8 s in experiments. Complex 2 shows circularly polarized luminescence and apparent photoluminescence, typical of the f-f transitions of Tb(III).

Abstract
A series of four new Dy12 dodecanuclear clusters based on azobenzene derivative ligands of salicylic acid (L1-L4) has been synthesized and characterized in the crystalline phase using X-ray diffraction on single crystal and powder, IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and DSC-TGA methods. It was revealed that all obtained clusters exhibit the formation of the similar metallic cluster nodes, as vertex-sharing heterocubanes, obtained from four Dy3+ cations, three bridging hydroxyl groups, and O atoms from the salicylic ligands. The coordination geometry around the Dy(III) centers has been carefully analyzed. Whereas Dy12-L1 and Dy12-L2 with L1 and L2 containing Me and OMe groups in para positions of the phenyl rings, respectively, form similar porous 3D diamond-like molecular networks due to CH-π interactions, for Dy12-L3 with L3 bearing NO2-electron-withdrawing group, the generation of 2D molecular grids assembled by π-π staking is observed, and for Dy12-L4 with L4 bearing phenyl substituent, 3D hexagonal channels have been generated. The complexes Dy12-L1, Dy12-L2, and Dy12-L3 exhibit a zero-field slow magnetic relaxation effect. After UV irradiation of Dy12-L1, a decrease of the magnetic anisotropy energy barrier displaying the possibility of control over magnetic properties by the external stimulus has been observed.

Abstract
The design and construction of high-nuclear lanthanide clusters with fascinating topology and functional properties have been an active area of research, however, the development of an effective approach for obtaining high-nuclear lanthanide clusters with multifunctional properties is still extremely difficult. Up to now, a systematic approach for guiding the further expansion of Ln(III)-based clusters showing good functional properties is lacking. Herein, we design and synthesize a polydentate Schiff base ligand (HL), which reacts with β-diketonate salts Ln(acac)3·2H2O, and a series of Ln8 clusters [Ln8(acac)6(L)2(μ3-O)6(μ2-C2H5O)4(μ2-Hacac)2]·2CH3CN (Ln(III) = Gd (1), Dy (2), and Ho (3); HL = pyridine-2-carboxylic acid (5-hydroxymethyl-furan-2-ylmethylene)-hydrazide, Hacac = acetylacetone) have been successfully synthesized. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies reveal that clusters 1-3 are isostructural and can be viewed as a Ln8 core bridged by eighteen μ2-O atoms, six μ3-O atoms and two μ4-O atoms. Magnetic studies show that cluster 1-Gd8 displays a large magnetocaloric effect with -ΔSm = 46.14 J kg-1 K-1 (T = 2.0 K and ΔH = 7.0 T); cluster 2-Dy8 exhibits single-molecule magnet behavior under zero-field conditions. It is worth mentioning that the -ΔSm of cluster 1-Gd8 is larger than that of most reported polynuclear Gd(III)-based clusters; the 2-Dy8 cluster is one of the rare polynuclear Lnn SMMs (n ≥ 8) under zero dc field. Importantly, these Ln(III)-based clusters (1-3) can catalyze the cycloaddition of CO2 with epoxides with high efficiency under mild conditions; and cluster 1-Gd8 as a catalyst could be reused at least three times without obvious loss of catalytic performance.

Abstract
Many methods have been utilized to adjust the size of superatomic metal nanoclusters, while tuning the geometric conformations of specific nanoclusters is rare. Here, we demonstrate that conformation variation can be realized by slightly modifying the ligand under maintaining the nuclei number of metal atoms. A series of novel "double-chair" conformation Ln12 (Ln = Sm (1), Eu (2), Gd (3), Tb (4), and Dy (5)) clusters were generated by replacing 3-formylsalicylic acid with 2,3-dihydroxybenzoic acid in the Ln12 nanocluster. Intriguingly, Dy12 displays slow magnetic relaxation at low temperatures, while Gd12 shows a large magnetocaloric effect (MCE) of 35.63 J kg-1 K-1 at 2 K for ΔH = 7 T. Additionally, the introduction of numerous coordination water molecules in these clusters enables Dy12 and Gd12 with high proton conductivity, namely, 2.13 × 10-4 and 3.62 × 10-4 S cm-1 under 358 K and 95% RH humidity conditions.

Abstract
Reactions of lanthanide nitrate, 1,3,5-benzenetrisbnzoic acid (H3BTB) and [RMI]Br ionic liquids (RMI = 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium; R = ethyl, propyl or butyl), gave rise to six novel lanthanide–organic frameworks (LOFs) [Ln(BTB)H2O], where Ln = Nd 1, Sm 2, Gd 3, Dy 4, Ho 5 and Er 6. These compounds have been characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectra, thermogravimetric analysis, single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction. Compounds 1–6 are isostructural and consist of infinite rod-shaped lanthanide-carboxylate building units, which are further bridged by trigonal-planar BTB ligands to give non-interpenetrated open 3D frameworks. The results of variable-temperature magnetic studies have shown that the magnetic interaction between the Ln(III) ions in 3, 5 and 6 is mainly due to antiferromagnetic coupling as well as the depopulation of the Stark levels.

Abstract
Lanthanide supramolecular chemistry is a fast growing and intriguing research field due to the unique photophysical, magnetic, and coordination properties of lanthanide ions (LnIII). Compared with the intensively investigated mononuclear Ln-complexes, polymetallic lanthanide supramolecular assemblies offer more structural superiority and functional advantages. In recent decades, significant progress has been made in polynuclear lanthanide supramolecules, varying from structural evolution to luminescent and magnetic functional materials. This review summarizes the design principles in ligand-induced coordination-driven self-assembly of polynuclear Ln-structures and intends to offer guidance for the construction of more elegant Ln-based architectures and optimization of their functional performances. Design principles concerning the water solubility and chirality of the lanthanide-organic assemblies that are vital in extending their applications are emphasized. The strategies for improving the luminescent properties and the applications in up-conversion, host-guest chemistry, luminescent sensing, and catalysis have been summarized. Magnetic materials based on supramolecular assembled lanthanide architectures are given in an individual section and are classified based on their structural features. Challenges remaining and perspective directions in this field are also briefly discussed.

Abstract
Accurately controlling the hydrolysis of metal ions can not only yield the desired structure of metal hydroxide clusters but also provide a deeper understanding of the formation process of natural hydroxide minerals. However, the capture of hydrolysis intermediates remains a significant challenge, and metal hydroxide clusters are mainly obtained by employing adventitious hydrolysis. In this study, we realized a hierarchical building block assembly from Y3+ ions to large Y12, Y34, and Y60 clusters by controlling the hydrolysis process of lanthanide ions under different pH conditions. Single-crystal structural analysis showed that the Y12 wheel, Y34 ship, and Y60 sodalite cage contain 4, 12, and 24 cubane-like [Y4(μ3-OH)4]8+ units, respectively. The structure of the Y60 cluster can be attributed to two Y34 clusters or six Y12 clusters linked by vertices. These clusters can be synthesized through the hydrolysis of Y3+ under different pH conditions, and Y60 can be prepared from the obtained Y12 or Y34 crystals by the simple addition of Y3+ ions. The capture and conversion of the intermediates of lanthanide series hydroxide clusters, Y12 or Y34, during the assembly from Y3+ ions to Y60 can facilitate an understanding of the formation process of high-nuclearity lanthanide clusters.

Abstract
A series of tetranuclear lanthanide-based clusters [Ln4(dbm)6(L)2(CH3OH)4]·2CH3OH (Ln(III) = Gd (1), Dy (2), and Ho (3); H3L = 2-[(2-(hydroxyimino)propanehydrazide)methyl]-2,3-dihydroxybenzaldehyde, Hdbm = dibenzoylmethane) and octanuclear lanthanide-based clusters [Ln8(HL)10(CH3O)4(CH3OH)2]·6CH3OH (Ln(III) = Gd (4), Dy (5)) were assembled using a polydentate Schiff-base ligand H3L and two different β-diketone salts via a solvothermal method, and their structures and magnetic properties have been characterized. Interestingly, β-diketones play an important role in assembling and affecting the structures of Ln4 to Ln8 clusters. This is the first use of β-diketone to affect the structures of polynuclear Ln(III)-based clusters from linear-shaped Ln4 clusters to Ln8 clusters. Magnetic studies revealed that antiferromagnetic interactions exist in clusters 1-Gd4 and 4-Gd8. More importantly, clusters 1-Gd4 and 4-Gd8 display significant cryogenic magnetic refrigeration properties (-ΔSm = 24.88 J kg-1 K-1 for 1-Gd4 and -ΔSm = 32.52 J kg-1 K-1 for 4-Gd8); the results show that cluster 4-Gd8 exhibits a larger magnetocaloric effect than 1-Gd4. Cluster 2-Dy4 shows remarkable single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior (ΔE/kB = 67.5 K and τ0 = 3.06 × 10-7 s) under a zero dc field, and 5-Dy8 exhibits a field-induced SMM-like behavior (ΔE/kB = 39.83 K and τ0 = 2.12 × 10-7 s) under a 5000 Oe dc field.

Abstract
Assembly of dysprosium(iii) salts with a multidentate ligand H3L ((2-hydroxy)-N'-((8-hydroxyquinolin-2-yl)methylene)-benzohydrazide) affords a variety of products with different topological structures, namely [Dy(H2L)(HL)]·CH3OH (1), [Dy2(HL)2(C6H5COO)2(CH3OH)2]·3CH3OH (2), [Dy2(HL)2(NO3)2(DMF)4]·4DMF (3), [Dy4L4(CH3OH)4]·2CH3OH·4H2O (4) and ([Dy4(HL)4(C6H5COO)4(CH3OH)(H2O)]·2CH3OH·CH3CN·H2O)n (5). The versatile and flexible coordination modes of phenoxo groups from salicylic hydrazide prove to be a key factor in the assembly of corresponding structures depending upon the reaction conditions. It is noteworthy that ligands HL2- act as a long-distance link and further connect the Dy2 fragments into an infinite 1D chain due to the conformational flexibility resulting from the rotatable C-C bond in 5. Furthermore, the magnetic measurements were performed on all complexes. The dc magnetic susceptibility data evidence distinct magnetic coupling interactions in the dinuclear complexes 2 (antiferromagnetic) and 3 (ferromagnetic) despite their similar structures, and only complex 3 shows slow relaxation behavior of magnetization. Ab initio calculations and electrostatic potential analysis on complexes 2, 3, and three other complexes (6, 7, 8) incorporating different kinds of ligands reveal the important interrelationship of magnetic anisotropy, magnetic coupling interactions and SMM properties.

Abstract
Four new lanthanide(iii) coordination polymers (1-4) have been synthesized by using 2,5-dihydroxybenzene-1,4-dicarboxylate (Dhbdc, C8H6O6 2-) as a ligand and characterized by elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy, TGA-DSC (Thermogravimetric Analysis-Differential Scanning Calorimetry) and single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The isolated complexes include; [Ce(Dhbdc)(H2O)3Cl] n (1) and [Ln(Dhbdc)1.5(H2O)2] n ·3n(C2H6O)·nH2O [Ln = Eu (2), Gd (3) and Tb (4)]. The structural analysis reveals that compound 1 is a two-dimensional polymer in which the cerium atoms are coordinated by six oxygen and two bridging chloride ions adopting a dodecahedral geometry. The compounds 2-4 are isomorphous and their extended structures consist of three-dimensional supramolecular frameworks encapsulating [001] channels occupied by the guest water and ethanol molecules. The metal atoms in 2-4 exhibit a square antiprism geometry. All these compounds have O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds originating from the coordinated water and solvent molecules that help to consolidate the structures. The compounds 1, 3 and 4 were investigated for magnetic properties and they exhibited weak antiferromagnetic coupling interactions between the lanthanides as per the Curie Weiss law. Anisotropic nature of 3 and 4 has been depicted as per magnetization versus field plots. Complex 4 behaves as a soft magnetic material as compared to 3. The luminescence studies indicate that compounds 2, 3 and 4 show ligand-centred fluorescence, which is significantly enhanced in the case of 4.

Abstract
Systematic exploration of the synthesis of mixed-metal Dy-M nitride clusterfullerenes (NCFs, M = Gd, Er, Tm, Lu) is performed, and the impact of the second metal on the relative yield is evaluated. We demonstrate that the ionic radius of the metal appears to be the main factor allowing explanation of the relative yields in Dy-M mixed-metal systems with M = Sc, Lu, Er, and Gd. At the same time, Dy-Tm NCFs show anomalously low yields, which is not consistent with the relatively small ionic radius of Tm3+ but can be explained by the high third ionization potential of Tm. Complete separation of Dy-Gd and Dy-Er, as well as partial separation of Dy-Lu M3N@C80 nitride clusterfullerenes, is accomplished by recycling HPLC. The molecular structures of DyGd2N@C80 and DyEr2N@C80 are analyzed by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction. A remarkable ordering of mixed-metal nitride clusters is found despite similar size and electronic properties of the metals. Possible pyramidalization of the nitride clusters in these and other nitride clusterfullerenes is critically analyzed with the help of DFT calculations and reconstruction of the nitrogen inversion barrier in M3N@C80 molecules is performed. Although a double-well potential with a pyramidal cluster structure is found to be common for most of them, the small size of the inversion barrier often leads to an apparent planar structure of the cluster. This situation is found for those M3N@C80 molecules in which the energy of the lowest vibrational level exceeds that of the inversion barrier, including Dy3N@C80 and DyEr2N@C80. The genuine pyramidal structure can be observed by X-ray diffraction only when the lowest vibrational level is below the inversion barrier, such as those found in Gd3N@C80 and DyGd2N@C80. The quantum nature of molecular vibrations becomes especially apparent when the size of the inversion barrier is comparable to the energy of the lowest vibrational levels.

Abstract
To better understand the factors determining the multi-step relaxation processes in polynuclear lanthanide single molecule magnets (SMMs), two Dy(iii)4 SMMs showing two-step relaxation processes were elaborately designed and investigated for their structure-dependent magnetic properties. Through targetedly fine-tuning the auxiliary ligand (from the anion of 1-phenylbutane-1,3-dione to 2-acetylcyclopentanone) on specific Dy(iii) sites while retaining the same type of coordination atoms, one of the two relaxation processes shifted to higher temperature with an increase of energy barrier, which permits the unambiguous assignment of the relaxation processes to specific metal sites. Therefore, the present {Dy4} systems provide a good example to probe the factors determining the relaxation dynamics, and point to a simple way to optimize the magnetic performance of polynuclear dysprosium SMMs.

Abstract
Treatment of scandium nitrate tetra-hydrate with the tetra-dentate ligand H2salophen [N,N'-bis-(salicyl-idene)-1,2-phenyl-enedi-amine] afforded the yellow dinuclear complex Sc(NO3)2(μ-salophen)Sc(salophen)(EtOH) or [Sc2(C20H14N2O2)2(NO3)2(C2H6O)] (systematic name: (ethanol-κO)bis-(nitrato-κ2 O,O'){μ-2,2'-[1,2-phenyl-enebis(nitrilo-methanylyl-idene)]diphenolato-κ4 N,N',O,O':κ2 O,O'}{2,2'-[1,2-phenyl-enebis(nitrilo-methanylyl-idene)]diphenolato-κ4 O,N,N',O'}discandium). In this compound, one salophen ligand displays a bridging coordination via the two oxygen atoms, while the other salophen ligand is attached to only one Sc center. This arrangement is stabilized by a hydrogen-bonded EtOH co-ligand, and by π-π stacking inter-actions between the two salophen ligands.

Reversible ON-OFF switching of single-molecule-magnetism associated with single-crystal-to-single-crystal structural transformation of a decanuclear dysprosium phosphonate. Abstract
A decanuclear dysprosium phosphonate (I) undergoes two consecutive SC–SC transformations, associated with OFF–ON–OFF switching of its single-molecule-magnetism.
{Dy5(EDDC)2(μ3-AcO)2(μ5-C15H11PO3)(μ4-C15H11PO3)(μ2-AcO)2(AcO)2(H2O)(CH3OH)2}2(μ4-C2O4)·xH2O (I), where H2EDDC is N′,N′′,E,N′,N′′,E-N′,N′′-(ethane-1,2-diylidene)dipyrazine-2-carbohydrazide and C15H11PO3H2 is 9-anthrylmethylphosphonic acid, is found to undergo two consecutive single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformations. The first is under UV irradiation (λ = 365 nm for 3 d in air) to {Dy5(EDDC)2(μ3-AcO)2(μ5-C15H11PO3)2(μ2-AcO)2(AcO)2(H2O)3}2(μ4-C2O4)·xH2O (I-UV) where the two CH3OH are replaced by two H2O and the second by annealing under N2 at 100 °C on a diffractometer or under Ar in a glovebox to {Dy5(EDDC)2(μ3-AcO)2(μ5-C15H11PO3)2(μ2-AcO)4(H2O)}2(μ4-C2O4) (I-A-N2 or I-A-Ar) where it has lost two H2O molecules. The second transformation is reversible by exposure to air at room temperature (I-A-N2-cool). While the overall structures are the same (retaining the space group P21/c), there is a considerable expansion of the unit cell from I (8171 Å3) to I-UV (8609 Å3) and I-A-N2 (8610 Å3) and the coordinations of the Dy atoms undergo major reconstructions. This is associated with switching the single-molecule-magnetism (SMM) from OFF for I to ON for I-UV and to OFF again for I-A-Ar in air. Such a switching mechanism associated with the retention of crystallinity is unique in the chemistry of dysprosium. The structure of the molecule is formed from two symmetry related pentamers joined by an oxalate. A related compound containing two isolated neutral pentamers {Dy5(EDDC)2(μ3-AcO)2(μ5-C15H11PO3)2(μ2-AcO)3(AcO)2(H2O)2}{Dy5(EDDC)2(μ3-AcO)2(μ5-C15H11PO3)(μ4-C15H11PO3)(μ2-AcO)3(AcO)2(CH3OH)2}·2CHCl3 (II) has also been isolated with closely related Dy coordination and it exhibits similar SMM behaviour in zero field.

Magnetization relaxation in the single-ion magnet DySc 2N@C 80: quantum tunneling, magnetic dilution, and unconventional temperature dependence. Phys Chem Chem Phys 2018; 20:11656-11672. Abstract
Quantum tunneling and relaxation of magnetization in single molecule magnet DySc2N@C80 is thoroughly studied as a function of magnetic dilution, temperature, and magnetic field.
Relaxation of magnetization in endohedral metallofullerenes DySc2N@C80 is studied at different temperatures, in different magnetic fields, and in different molecular arrangements. Magnetization behavior and relaxation are analyzed for powder sample, and for DySc2N@C80 diluted in non-magnetic fullerene Lu3N@C80, adsorbed in voids of a metal–organic framework, and dispersed in a polymer. The magnetic field dependence and zero-field relaxation are also studied for single-crystals of DySc2N@C80 co-crystallized with Ni(ii) octaethylporphyrin, as well as for the single crystal diluted with Lu3N@C80. Landau–Zener theory is applied to analyze quantum tunneling of magnetization in the crystals. The field dependence of relaxation rates revealed a dramatic dependence of the zero-field tunneling resonance width on the dilution and is explained with the help of an analysis of dipolar field distributions. AC magnetometry is used then to get access to the relaxation of magnetization in a broader temperature range, from 2 to 87 K. Finally, a theoretical framework describing the spin dynamics with dissipation is proposed to study magnetization relaxation phenomena in single molecule magnets.
