Abstract
Based on the first-principles calculations, we investigated the ferroelectric properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials NbO2X (X = I, Br). Our cleavage energy analysis shows that exfoliating one NbO2I monolayer from its existing bulk counterpart is feasible. The phonon spectrum and molecular dynamics simulations confirm the dynamic and thermal stability of the monolayer structures for both NbO2I and NbO2Br. Total energy calculations show that the ferroelectric phase is the ground state for both materials, with the calculated in-plane ferroelectric polarizations being 384.5 pC m-1 and 375.2 pC m-1 for monolayers NbO2I and NbO2Br, respectively. Moreover, the intrinsic Curie temperature TC of monolayer NbO2I (NbO2Br) is as high as 1700 K (1500 K) from Monte Carlo simulation. Furthermore, with the orbital selective external potential method, the origin of ferroelectricity in NbO2X is revealed as the second-order Jahn-Teller effect. Our findings suggest that monolayers NbO2I and NbO2Br are promising candidate materials for practical ferroelectric applications.

Abstract
We show that the intermediates of photochemical reactions—sudden polarization and zwitterion formations—are consequences of the pseudo-Jahn–Teller effect (PJTE), which facilitates a better understanding, rationalization, prediction, and manipulation of the corresponding chemical and biological processes.

Abstract
Phosphorene, the monolayer form of black phosphorus, is the most recent addition to graphene-like van der Waals two-dimensional (2D) systems. Due to its several interesting properties, namely its tunable direct band gap, high carrier mobility, and unique in-plane anisotropy, it has emerged as a promising candidate for electronic and optoelectronic devices. Phosphorene (Pn) reveals a much richer phase diagram than graphene, and it comprises the two forms namely the stapler-clip like (black Pn, α form) and chairlike (blue Pn, β form) structures. Regardless of its favorable properties, black Pn suffers from instability in oxygen and water, which limits its successful applications in electronic devices. In this Perspective, the cause of structural diversity of Pn, which leads to different properties of both black and blue Pn, is discussed. We provide possible solutions for protecting phosphorene from chemical degradation and its applications in the field of energy storage namely for Li and Na ion batteries.

Abstract
Phosphorene (Pn) is stabilized as a layered material like graphite, yet it possess a natural direct band gap (Eg = 2.0 eV). Interestingly, unlike graphene, Pn exhibits a much richer phase diagram which includes distorted forms like the stapler-clip (black Pn, α form) and chairlike (blue Pn, β form) structures. The existence of these phases is attributed to pseudo-Jahn-Teller (PJT) instability of planar hexagonal P6(6-) rings. In both cases, the condition for vibronic instability of the planar P6(6-) rings is satisfied. Doping with electron donors like tetrathiafulvalene and tetraamino-tetrathiafulvalene and electron acceptors like tetracyanoquinodimethane and tetracyanoethylene convert blue Pn into N-type and black Pn into efficient P-type semiconductors, respectively. Interestingly, pristine blue Pn, an indirect gap semiconductor, gets converted into a direct gap semiconductor on electron or hole doping. Because of comparatively smaller undulation in blue Pn (with respect to black Pn), the van der Waals interactions between the dopants and blue Pn is stronger. PJT distortions for two-dimensional phosphorus provides a unified understanding of structural features and chemical reactivity in its different phases.

Geometry, Electronic Structure, and Pseudo Jahn-Teller Effect in Tetrasilacyclobutadiene Analogues. Sci Rep 2016; 6:23315. Abstract
We revealed the origin of the structural features of a series of tetrasilacyclobutadiene analogues based on a detailed study of their electronic structure and the pseudo Jahn-Teller effect (PJTE). Starting with the D4h symmetry of the Si4R4 system with a square four-membered silicon ring as a reference geometry, and employing ab initio calculations of energy profiles along lower-symmetry nuclear displacements in the ground and several excited states, we show that the ground-state boat-like and chair-like equilibrium configurations are produced by the PJT interaction with appropriate excited sates. For Si4F4 a full two-mode b1g−b2g adiabatic potential energy surface is calculated showing explicitly the way of transformation from the unstable D4h geometry to the two equilibrium C2h configurations via the D2h saddle point. The PJTE origin of these structural features is confirmed also by estimates of the vibronic coupling parameters. For Si4R4 with large substituents the origin of their structure is revealed by analyzing the PJT interaction between the frontier molecular orbitals. The preferred chair-like structures of Si4R4 analogues with amido substituents, and heavier germanium-containing systems Ge4R4 (potential precursors for semiconducting materials) are predicted.

Abstract
Synthesis, crystal structures, and chemical bonding are reported for four binary phosphides with different degrees of phosphorus oligomerization, ranging from isolated P atoms to infinite phosphorus chains. Ba3P2 = Ba4P(2.67)□(0.33) (□ = vacancy) crystallizes in the anti-Th3P4 structure type with the cubic space group I4̅3d (no. 220), Z = 6, a = 9.7520(7) Å. In the Ba3P2 crystal structure, isolated P(3-) anions form distorted octahedra around the Ba(2+) cations. β-Ba5P4 crystallizes in the Eu5As4 structure type with the orthorhombic space group Cmce (no. 64), Z = 4, a = 16.521(2) Å, b = 8.3422(9) Å, c = 8.4216(9) Å. In the crystal structure of β-Ba5P4, one-half of the phosphorus atoms are condensed into P2(4-) dumbbells. SrP2 and BaP2 are isostructural and crystallize in the monoclinic space group P2₁/c (no. 14), Z = 6, a = 6.120(2)/6.368(1) Å, b = 11.818(3)/12.133(2) Å, c = 7.441(2)/7.687(2) Å, β = 126.681(4)/126.766(2)° for SrP2/BaP2. In the crystal structures of SrP2 and BaP2, all phosphorus atoms are condensed into ∞(1)P(1-) cis-trans helical chains. Electronic structure calculations, chemical bonding analysis via the recently developed solid-state adaptive natural density partitioning (SSAdNDP) method, and UV-vis spectroscopy reveal that SrP2 and BaP2 are electron-balanced semiconductors.
