Bis(oxazolinyl)phenyl-Ligated Rare-Earth-Metal Complexes: Highly Regioselective Catalysts for cis-1,4-Polymerization of Isoprene

Influence of Metal Coordination on the Gas-Phase Chemistry of the Positional Isomers of Fluorobenzoate Complexes

The fragmentation behaviors of the o-, m-, and p-fluorobenzoate complexes of La³⁺, Ce³⁺, Fe³⁺, Cu²⁺, and UO₂²⁺ were investigated by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, and the corresponding reaction mechanisms were explored by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Fluoride transfer product La^IIIFCl₃^-/Ce^IIIFCl₃^- and decarboxylation product La^IIICl₃(C₆H₄F)^-/Ce^IIICl₃(C₆H₄F)^- were observed when the carboxylate precursors La^IIICl₃(C₆H₄FCO₂)^-/Ce^IIICl₃(C₆H₄FCO₂)^- were subjected to collision-induced dissociation. The variation in product ratios, which is not obvious in the meta and para cases, qualitatively follows the increasing overall energy barrier and reaction endothermicity of the two-step CO₂/C₆H₄ elimination mechanism, and this aligns with the increase in U-F distance in the ortho, meta, and para decarboxylation product isomers. In contrast, the mass spectra of Fe^IIICl₃(C₆H₄FCO₂)^-/Cu^IICl₂(C₆H₄FCO₂)^- are dominated by the reduction product FeCl₃^-/CuCl₂^- regardless of the fluorobenzoate isomer. DFT/B3LYP calculations show that the two-step CO₂/C₆H₄F elimination pathways are comparable in energy for all three positional isomers. It is energetically more favorable to give the reduction product than the fluoride transfer product, which is opposite to the lanthanum cases. Although the decarboxylation product was observed for all three U^VIO₂Cl₂(C₆H₄FCO₂)^- isomers, the ortho isomer behaves more similarly to La^IIICl₃(C₆H₄FCO₂)^-/Ce^IIICl₃(C₆H₄FCO₂)^- as evidenced by the formation of U^VIO₂FCl₂^-, and the appearance of U^VO₂Cl₂^- in the cases of the meta and para isomers indicates the similarity with Fe^IIICl₃(C₆H₄FCO₂)^-/Cu^IICl₂(C₆H₄FCO₂)^-. The shorter U-F distance in U^VIO₂Cl₂(o-C₆H₄F)^- causes the decrease in the fluoride transfer barrier and thus makes this process more favorable over o-C₆H₄F radical loss to give U^VO₂Cl₂^-.

Rare Earth Starting Materials and Methodologies for Synthetic Chemistry

The number of rare earth (RE) starting materials used in synthesis is staggering, ranging from simple binary metal-halide salts to borohydrides and "designer reagents" such as alkyl and organoaluminate complexes. This review collates the most important starting materials used in RE synthetic chemistry, including essential information on their preparations and uses in modern synthetic methodologies. The review is divided by starting material category and supporting ligands (i.e., metals as synthetic precursors, halides, borohydrides, nitrogen donors, oxygen donors, triflates, and organometallic reagents), and in each section relevant synthetic methodologies and applications are discussed.

Rare-Earth-Metal Complexes Bearing an Iminodibenzyl-PNP Pincer Ligand: Synthesis and Reactivity toward 3,4-Selective Polymerization of 1,3-Dienes

A PNP-pincer ligand provides a versatile ligation framework, which is highly useful in organometallic chemistry and catalytic chemistry. In this work, by a de novo strategy, a simple and efficient synthetic pathway, has been developed to prepare the new iminodibenzyl-based PNP pincer proligand ^imin-RPNP(Li or H) (R = isopropyl, phenyl). By employing salt metathesis or direct alkyl elimination, we successfully synthesized a series of iminodibenzyl-PNP rare-earth-metal (Ln = Sc, Y, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Lu) complexes and characterized them by NMR and X-ray diffraction analyses. Upon addition of a borate and triisobutylaluminum (TIBA), the rare-earth-metal complexes 2-Y, 2-Dy, 2-Ho, 2-Er, and 2-Tm bearing the ^imin-PhPNP ligand exhibited unexpectedly high 3,4-selectivity (up to 95%) for the polymerization of 1,3-dienes (isoprene and myrcene); in particular, the chosen yttrium complex 2-Y promoted the 1,3-diene polymerization in a living manner. A computational study suggested that the sterically congested configuration around the metal center imposed by the ^imin-RPNP ligand might be the main reason for this unusual selectivity.

Unsymmetrical diarylamido-based rare-earth alkyl complexes: their synthesis and catalytic performance in isoprene polymerization

A family of rare-earth complexes bearing diarylamido-based pincer ligands with phosphino-, phenylthio- and quinolino-sidearms have been synthesized and fully characterized. Upon activation by [Ph₃C][B(C₆F₅)₄], the scandium (P-Sc and S-Sc) and yttrium complexes (P-Y and S-Y) could catalyze the polymerization of isoprene with cis-1,4 selectivity (up to 98.8%), while the lutetium analogues P-Lu and S-Lu produced trans-1,4 selective polyisoprene (up to 83.3%). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were carried out to clarify the mechanisms for the metal-dependent stereoselective (cis to trans) polymerization of isoprene catalyzed by P-Sc, P-Y and P-Lu, suggesting that kinetically and thermodynamically more favorable insertion-isomerization during chain propagation is the key reason for P-Lu catalyzed trans-stereoselective isoprene polymerization.

Anilido-oxazoline-ligated rare-earth metal complexes: synthesis, characterization and highly cis-1,4-selective polymerization of isoprene

Anilido-oxazoline-ligated rare-earth metal dialkyl complexes have been synthesized and structurally characterized. The complexes exhibited strong fluorescence emissions and good catalytic performance on isoprene polymerization with high cis-1,4-selectivity. The treatment of anilido-oxazoline precursors ortho-C6H4[NH(2,6-R12C6H3)][C[double bond, length as m-dash]NC(R2,R3)CH2O] (R1 = R2 = R3 = Me (HL1); R1 = iPr, R2 = R3 = Me (HL2); R1 = R2 = iPr, R3 = H (HL3); and R1 = iPr, R2 = R3 = H (HL4)) with an equimolar amount of Ln(CH2SiMe3)3(THF)2 (Ln = Sc, Y) afforded rare-earth metal complexes L1-4-Ln(CH2SiMe3)2(THF)n (L1-Sc (1), n = 1; L2-Sc (2), n = 0; L1-Y (3), n = 1; L2-Y (4), n = 1; L3-Y (5), n = 1; and L4-Y (6), n = 1) in good yields. The complexes are stable in both the solid state and solution. Single crystal X-ray diffraction study showed that complexes 1, 3 and 4 exhibit a distorted trigonal bipyramidal configuration, while complex 2 is pseudo-tetrahedral without coordinated THF. The luminescence properties of complexes 1-4 were investigated and the emission maxima were found in the range of 465-477 nm. DFT and TD-DFT studies were carried out to explore their characteristic electronic structures and gain insight into their optical properties. Upon activation with organic borates, the reported complexes exhibited high activity and cis-1,4-selectivity for isoprene polymerization. The nature of the central metal and substituent groups in oxazoline have an influence on the cis-1,4-selectivity.

Highly active rare-earth metal catalysts for heteroselective ring-opening polymerization of racemic lactide

Rare-earth metal complexes usually exhibit high activities in the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of lactide, yet only a few scandium complexes have shown satisfactory activity. Herein, we report the synthesis of a series of chiral anilido-oxazoline-supported scandium and yttrium complexes that exhibit high activity in the ROP of racemic lactide (rac-LA). Complexes La-f-Ln(CH2SiMe3)2THF (La-f = 2-(2,6-R2PhN)-phenyl-4-(S)-R'-oxazoline; for 1a-f: L = La-f, Ln = Sc; for 2a-d: L = La-d, Ln = Y) were synthesized via the convenient one-pot reaction of Ln(CH2SiMe3)3(THF)2 (Ln = Sc, Y) with the corresponding proligands. The crystal structures of 1a, 1d, 1e, and 1f were isostructural, adopting a distorted trigonal bipyramidal configuration. Sc complexes 1 showed outstanding activity in the ROP of rac-LA with heteroselectivity. TOFs of up to 720 h-1 and 2910 h-1 were obtained in THF at room temperature and toluene at 60 °C, respectively. To our knowledge, these are the highest activities reported for Sc systems. Y complexes 2 showed higher activity and heteroselectivity than the Sc complexes, with TOFs of up to 1176 h-1 in THF at room temperature. Compared with the ortho-substituent on the anilido moiety, the bulky substituent at the chiral center of the oxazoline ring had a greater effect on controlling the heteroselectivity.

Cis-1,4-Polymerization of Isoprene by 1,3-Bis(oxazolinymethylidene)isoindoline-Ligated Rare-Earth Metal Dialkyl Complexes

A series of novel chiral nonmetallocene pincer-type rare-earth metal dialkyl complexes bearing the chiral monoanionic tridentate C₂-symmetric 1,3-bis(oxazolinymethylidene)isoindoline (BOXMI-H) ligand (BOXMI)Ln(CH₂SiMe₃)₂ 1⁻3 (1: Ln = Sc, yield = 57%; 2: Ln = Lu, yield = 55%; 3: Ln = Y, yield = 62%) have been prepared in moderate yields via the acid-base reaction between the BOXMI ligand and rare-earth metal tri(trimethylsilylmethyl) complexes. The X-ray diffractions show that both of the complexes 1 and 2 contain one BOXMI ligand and two trimethylsilylmethyl ligands, adopting a distorted trigonal bipyramidal configuration. In the presence of a cocatalyst such as borate and AlR₃, these complexes 1⁻3 exhibit high activities of up to 6.8 × 10⁴ (g of polymer)/(mol_Ln h) and high cis-1,4 selectivities of up to 97% in the polymerization of isoprene in toluene, yielding the cis-1,4-polyisoprenes with heavy molecular weights (M_n of up to 710,000 g/mol) and bimodal molecular weight distributions (M_w/M_n = 2.0⁻4.5).

DFT Studies on cis-1,4-Polymerization of Dienes Catalyzed by a Cationic Rare-Earth Metal Complex Bearing an Ancillary PNP Ligand

Dnsity functional theory (DFT) calculations have been carried out for the highly selective cis-1,4-polymerization of butadiene catalyzed by a cationic rare-earth metal complex bearing an ancillary PNP ligand. It has been found that the chain initiation and propagation of butadiene polymerization occurs via the favorable cis-1,4-insertion route. The trans-1,4 and 1,2-insertion are unfavorable both kinetically and thermodynamically. The chain growth follows the π-allyl-insertion mechanism. The analyses of energy decomposition of transition states indicate that the likelihood of rival insertion pathways is predominantly controlled by the interaction energy of butadiene with a metal center and the deformation energy of butadiene moiety. The electronic factor of the central metal has a decisive influence on the cis- vs. trans-insertion and the regioselectivity (cis-1,4- vs. cis-1,2-insertion) is mainly determined by steric hindrance. Tetrahydrofuran (THF) coordination made monomer insertion less favorable compared with THF-free case and had more noticeable impact on the trans-monomer insertion compared with the cis case. During the chain propagation, cis-insertion of monomer facilitates THF de-coordination and the THF molecule could therefore dissociate from the central metal.

Di and trinuclear rare-earth metal complexes supported by 3-amido appended indolyl ligands: synthesis, characterization and catalytic activity towards isoprene 1,4-cis polymerization

Different di and trinuclear rare-earth metal complexes supported by 3-amido appended indolyl ligands were synthesized and their catalytic activities towards isoprene polymerization were investigated. Treatment of [RE(CH₂SiMe₃)₃(thf)₂] with 1 equiv. of 3-(CyN[double bond, length as m-dash]CH)C₈H₅NH in toluene or in THF afforded dinuclear rare-earth metal alkyl complexes having indolyl ligands in different hapticities with central metals {[η²:η¹-μ-η¹-3-(CyNCH(CH₂SiMe₃))Ind]RE-(thf)(CH₂SiMe₃)}₂ (Cy = cyclohexyl, Ind = Indolyl, RE = Yb (1), Er (2), Y (3)) or {[η¹-μ-η¹-3-(CyNCH(CH₂SiMe₃))Ind]RE-(thf)₂(CH₂SiMe₃)}₂ (RE = Yb (4), Er (5), Y (6), Gd (7)), respectively. These two series of dinuclear complexes could be transferred to each other easily by only changing the solvents in the process. Reaction of [Er(CH₂SiMe₃)₃(thf)₂] with 1 equiv. of 3-t-butylaminomethylindole 3-(^tBuNHCH₂)C₈H₅NH in THF afforded the unexpected trinuclear erbium alkyl complex [η²:η¹-μ-η¹-3-(^tBuNCH₂)Ind]₄Er₃(thf)₅(CH₂SiMe₃) (8), which can also be prepared by reaction of 3 equiv. of [Er(CH₂SiMe₃)₃(thf)₂] with 4 equiv. of 3-(^tBuNHCH₂)C₈H₅NH in THF. Accordingly, complexes [η²:η¹-μ-η¹-3-(^tBuNCH₂)Ind]₄RE₃(thf)₅(CH₂SiMe₃) (RE = Y (9), Dy (10)) were prepared by reactions of 3 equiv. of [RE(CH₂SiMe₃)₃(thf)₂] with 4 equiv. of 3-(^tBuNHCH₂)C₈H₅NH in THF. Reactions of [RE(CH₂SiMe₃)₃(thf)₂] with 1 equiv. of 3-t-butylaminomethylindole 3-(^tBuNHCH₂)C₈H₅NH in THF, followed by treatment with 1 equiv. of [(2,6-ⁱPr₂C₆H₃)N[double bond, length as m-dash]CHNH(C₆H₃ⁱPr₂-2,6)] afforded, after workup, the dinuclear rare-earth metal complexes [η¹-μ-η¹:η¹-3-(^tBuNCH₂)Ind][η¹-μ-η¹:η³-3-(^tBuNCH₂)Ind]RE₂(thf)[(η³-2,6-ⁱPr₂C₆H₃)NCHN(C₆H₃ⁱPr₂-2,6)]₂(RE = Er (11), Y (12)) having the indolyl ligands bonded with the rare-earth metal in different ligations. All new complexes 1-12 were fully characterized by spectroscopic methods and elemental analyses, and their structures were determined by X-ray crystallographic analyses. It was found that, except for complexes 1, 4, 11 and 12, all complexes were highly efficient catalysts for selective isoprene polymerization (up to 99% 1,4-cis selectivity) with the cooperation of co-catalysts, and the trinuclear complexes displayed advantages over dinuclear complexes in terms of molecular weight of polymers.

Bidentate forms of β-triketimines: syntheses, characterization and outstanding performance of enamine–diimine cobalt complexes in isoprene polymerization

Local structure analysis around the Nd center in a ternary catalyst comprising Nd(vers)3, Al((i)Bu)3 and Al((i)Bu)2Cl by XAFS

Lanthanide-based catalysts are highly active for isoprene polymerization in hexane. In this paper, a ternary catalyst consisting of neodymium neodecanoate {Nd(vers)3}, Al((i)Bu)3 and Al((i)Bu)2Cl was studied by using X-ray-absorption fine-structure (XAFS) technique. A sealed and moisture-proof liquid sample cell with adjustable thickness was designed for Nd LIII-edge XAFS measurements. Based on the XAFS data analysis, detailed structure changes around the Nd center were obtained. It was found that the Nd(vers)3 molecules formed an oligomer structure in hexane solution with two Nd-O subshells (5O @ 2.39 Å and 5O @ 2.54 Å) around the Nd center. The alkylation process by adding Al((i)Bu)3 to the hexane solution of Nd(vers)3 partially destroyed the aggregation degree of Nd(vers)3 molecules in hexane solution. Al((i)Bu)3 ligands were bonded to the Nd center by Nd-C bonding. With the Nd : Al ratio increasing from 1 : 2.5 to 1 : 10, the O neighbors around Nd decreased from 4 to 2 but with an unchanged Nd-O bond length of 2.38 Å, and the C neighbors around Nd were kept at ca. 4 with Nd-C bond lengths in the range of 2.57-2.58 Å. The Nd-O bonds can be further replaced by Nd-C bonds during the aging process. The chlorination process by adding Al((i)Bu)2Cl to the mixture solution of Nd(vers)3 and Al((i)Bu)3 restrained intensively the agglomeration of Nd(vers)3 molecules in hexane solution. Al((i)Bu)2Cl ligands were bonded to the Nd center by Nd-Cl bonds. There were about 3-4 C neighbors at 2.58 Å, 2 Cl neighbors at 2.87 Å, and 2 Al next-neighbors at 3.14 Å around the Nd center. After allowing the ternary catalyst to stand for 5 days, the coordination numbers of Nd-C and Nd-Cl were all stabilized to 3 without bond length changes, and partial single Cl(-) anions were also bonded to the Nd center. All these structural details and their change tendency demonstrate that the decrease of aggregation degree of Nd(vers)3 molecules in hexane solution can improve the catalytic activity of the ternary lanthanide-based catalyst system.
