Abstract
Photoactivatable (alternatively, photoremovable, photoreleasable, or photocleavable) protecting groups (PPGs), also known as caged or photocaged compounds, are used to enable non-invasive spatiotemporal photochemical control over the release of species of interest. Recent years have seen the development of PPGs activatable by biologically and chemically benign visible and near-infrared (NIR) light. These long-wavelength-absorbing moieties expand the applicability of this powerful method and its accessibility to non-specialist users. This review comprehensively covers organic and transition metal-containing photoactivatable compounds (complexes) that absorb in the visible- and NIR-range to release various leaving groups and gasotransmitters (carbon monoxide, nitric oxide, and hydrogen sulfide). The text also covers visible- and NIR-light-induced photosensitized release using molecular sensitizers, quantum dots, and upconversion and second-harmonic nanoparticles, as well as release via photodynamic (photooxygenation by singlet oxygen) and photothermal effects. Release from photoactivatable polymers, micelles, vesicles, and photoswitches, along with the related emerging field of photopharmacology, is discussed at the end of the review.

Abstract
[Ru2Cl2(DPhF)3] (DPhF = diphenylformamidinate) links preferentially to the junctions of RNA (ribonucleic acid) structures, although the bonding mode is not known. In order to clarify this question the reactions between [Ru2Cl2(DPhF)3] and cytosine (Hcyto), cytidine (Hcyti), cytidine 2',3'-cyclic monophosphate sodium salt (NacCMP), adenine (Hade), adenosine (Haden) and adenosine 3',5'-cyclic monophosphate (HcAMP) have been carried out. In the resultant complexes, cyto (cytosinate), cyti (cytidinate), cCMP (cytidine 2',3'-cyclic monophosphate monoanion), ade (adeninate), aden (adenosinate) and cAMP (deprotonated adenosine 3',5'-cyclic monophosphate) are bonded to the diruthenium unit as N,N'-bridging ligands, as confirmed by the solution of the crystal structures of [RuCl(DPhF)3(cyto)] and [RuCl(DPhF)3(ade)] by X-ray diffraction. The axial positions of the diruthenium species are still available for additional interactions with other residues that could explain its preference towards RNA junctions.

Abstract
Three new trans-ruthenium(ii) complexes coordinated to tetrapyridyl ligands, namely [Ru(bapbpy)(dmso)Cl]Cl ([2]Cl), [Ru(bapbpy)(Hmte)2](PF6)2 ([3](PF6)2), and [Ru(biqbpy)(Hmte)2](PF6)2 ([4](PF6)2), were prepared as analogues of [Ru(biqbpy)(dmso)Cl]Cl ([1]Cl), a recently described photoactivated chemotherapy agent. The new complexes were characterized, and their crystal structures showed the distorted coordination octahedron typical of this family of complexes. Their photoreactivity in solution was analyzed by spectrophotometry and mass spectrometry, which showed that the sulfur ligand was substituted upon blue light irradiation. The binding of the ruthenium complexes to a reference single-stranded oligonucleotide (s(5'CTACGGTTTCAC3')) was explored both in the dark and under light irradiation by gel electrophoresis and high-resolution mass spectrometry. While adduct formation in the dark was negligible for the four complexes, light irradiation led to the formation of adducts with one or two ruthenium centers per oligonucleotide. The absence of interactions in the dark and the presence of complex-oligonucleotide adducts demonstrate that visible light controls the interaction of these ruthenium complexes with nucleic acids.

Abstract
Full optimizations of stationary points along the reaction coordinate for the hydration of several quinolone Ru(II) half-sandwich complexes were performed in water environment using the B3PW91/6-31+G(d)/PCM/UAKS method. The role of diffuse functions (especially on oxygen) was found crucial for correct geometries along the reaction coordinate. Single-point (SP) calculations were performed at the B3LYP/6-311++G(2df,2pd)/DPCM/saled-UAKS level. In the first part, two possible reaction mechanisms-associative and dissociative were compared. It was found that the dissociative mechanism of the hydration process is kinetically slightly preferred. Another important conclusion concerns the reaction channels. It was found that substitution of chloride ligand (abbreviated in the text as dechlorination reaction) represents energetically and kinetically the most feasible pathway. In the second part the same hydration reaction was explored for reactivity comparison of the Ru(II)-complexes with several derivatives of nalidixic acid: cinoxacin, ofloxacin, and (thio)nalidixic acid. The hydration process is about four orders of magnitude faster in a basic solution compared to neutral/acidic environment with cinoxacin and nalidixic acid as the most reactive complexes in the former and latter environments, respectively. The explored hydration reaction is in all cases endergonic; nevertheless the endergonicity is substantially lower (by ∼6 kcal/mol) in basic environment. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Dual Photoreactivity of a New Rh 2(II,II) Complex for Biological Applications. Inorganica Chim Acta 2016; 454:149-154. Abstract
A new Rh2(II,II) complex containing one dppn (benzo[i]dipyrido[3,2-a:2,3-c]phenazine) ligand with an extended π-system, cis-H,H-[Rh2(OCCH3NH)2(dppn)(CH3CN)2]2+ (2), was synthesized and characterized. The dppn ligand, which serves as a DNA base pair intercalator, chelates to a single Rh center and is positioned trans to the amidato N atoms of the bridging acetamide ligand. This ligand also possesses a low-lying dppn-centered 3ππ* state that is advantageous for the sensitization of singlet oxygen (1O2), which complex 2 produced with a quantum yield, Φ 1O2460, of 0.22(7) with 460 nm excitation. In addition, one equivalent of CH3CN is released from 2 upon irradiation with visible light, generating cis-H,H-[Rh2(OCCH3NH)2(dppn)(H2O)(CH3CN)]2+ in aqueous media with photoinduced ligand exchange quantum yield, ΦLE450, of 0.0033(1). Thermal denaturation and relative viscosity studies are consistent with a π-stacking interaction of 2 with double-stranded DNA together with covalent binding to the duplex upon irradiation with visible light. Therefore, 2 exhibits dual photoreactivity towards DNA, making it potentially useful for photochemotherapy with enhanced activity relative to compounds able to achieve only one mode of cell death upon irradiation.

Abstract
The interactions between the 6-mer duplex oligonucleotide d(GTCGAC)2 and the photoactive dirhodium complexes cis-H,H-[Rh2(HNOCCH3)2(L)(CH3CN)4](2+), where L represents bpy (1, 2,2'-bipyridine) and dppz (2, dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine), were probed using 2D (1)H-(1)H NOESY NMR spectroscopy. Complex does not interact with the duplex in the dark, but binds covalently to the terminal guanine following irradiation with visible light. Similar behavior was observed for 2, but in addition to the photoinduced covalent DNA binding, the planar dppz ligand of the complex shields the terminal cytosine protons after irradiation. The results are consistent with photoinduced guanine coordination and end-capping of the duplex through π-stacking interactions with the terminal GC base pair. These data show that in the presence of the 6-mer duplex oligonucleotide, 1 and 2 exhibit photoinduced covalent binding to DNA. In addition, the π-stacking interactions of 2 with the duplex are enhanced upon irradiation.
