l-Tyrosinatonickel(II) Complex: Synthesis and Structural, Spectroscopic, Magnetic, and Biological Properties of 2{[Ni(l-Tyr)2(bpy)]}·3H2O·CH3OH

Switching of magnetic properties by topotactic reaction in a 1D CN-bridged Ni(II)-Nb(IV) system

Two 1D CN-bridged assemblies: the nearly straight Li2[Ni(cyclam)][Nb(CN)8]·7.5H2O (1) chains and the zigzag-shaped Li2[Ni(cyclam)][Nb(CN)8]·2H2O (2) chains, are obtained in the reaction between [Ni(cyclam)]2+ and [Nb(CN)8]4- in warm concentrated LiCl water solution. Both compounds are composed of alternating bimetallic Ni(II)-Nb(IV) chains and contain incorporated lithium cations, which compensate the negative charge of the coordination skeleton. The straight chain 1 (Ni-Nb-Ni angle = 153.2°) can be reversibly dehydrated under dry nitrogen flow at room temperature to an intermediate dihydrate phase 1d and further transformed to the zigzag-shaped chain 2 (Ni-Nb-Ni angle = 86.6°) by annealing at 150 °C. The process can be reversed by exposure to high humidity at room temperature, upon which 2 is converted back to 1. This water sorption-induced breathing effect is accompanied by changes in magnetic properties, most notably reflected in different values of saturation magnetization and critical field of metamagnetic transition, which indicate that both intra- and inter-chain interactions are affected by the structure reorganization.

Hepta-coordinated Ni(II) assemblies - structure and magnetic studies

Two mononuclear complexes [Ni(dapsc)(H2O)2]Cl(NO3)·H2O (1) and [Ni(dapsc)(NCS)2] (2), and a bimetallic CN-bridged trinuclear molecule [NiII(dapsc)(H2O)]2[WIV(CN)8]·11H2O (3) (dapsc = 2,6-diacetylpyridine-bis(semicarbazone)) were synthesised and characterised in terms of structure and magnetic properties. All three compounds contain Ni(ii) ions in a pentagonal bipyramid coordination geometry afforded by the equatorial pentadentate ligand (dapsc) and two O- or N-donating axial ligands. The compounds differ in the relative arrangement of the complexes, intermolecular interactions and distortion from the ideal coordination geometry. The high-field EPR and magnetometric studies show large anisotropy of the Ni(ii) centres with the D parameters in the range of -10.5 to -21.2 cm-1 and negligible antiferromagnetic interactions. The easy-axis magnetic anisotropies of 1-3 were reproduced by ab initio CASSCF/NEVPT2 calculations. The ground states consist mainly of the |MS = |±1 states, which is consistent with the fact that no out-of-phase signal can be detected in the AC magnetic susceptibility measurements.

Towards a selective synthetic route for cobalt amino acid complexes and their application in ring opening polymerization of rac-lactide

Catalysts based on cobalt amino acids and 2,2 bipyridine (bipy) present an attractive and cost-effective alternative as ring opening polymerization catalysts, yet this system remains underexplored despite the advantageous coordination properties of amino acids and bipy as ligands combined with the variety of accessible oxidation states and coordination geometries of cobalt. Here, metal complexes of type [Co(aa)₂(bipy)] with amino acids (aa: glycine, leucine and threonine) as ligands are reported. The complexes were characterized spectroscopically (IR, UV-vis and ¹H, ¹³C NMR for diamagnetic species), and by MS spectrometry and elemental analysis. The data reveal that the 2,2 bipyridine acts as a neutral bidentate donor coordinating to the metal ion through two nitrogen atoms and the amino acid acts as a bidentate ligand coordinating through the carboxylate and amino group forming a stable five membered ring and a pseudo-octahedral geometry around the Co center. The activity of the complexes for the ring opening polymerization (ROP) of rac-lactide is presented. The complexes are effective initiators for the ROP of rac-lactide (K_obs = 9.05 × 10⁻⁴ s⁻¹) at 100 : 1 [rac-lactide] : [catalyst] 1 M overall concentration of lactide in toluene at 403 K.

Catalysts based on Co, amino acids, and 2,2-bipyridine present an attractive and economic alternative in ring opening polymerization, and possess advantageous ligand coordination properties combined with a variety of accessible oxidation states and coordination geometries.

Synthesis, crystal structures, HF-EPR, and magnetic properties of six-coordinate transition metal (Co, Ni, and Cu) compounds with a 4-amino-1,2,4-triazole Schiff-base ligand

We have synthesized a series of transition metal compounds [M(L)₂(H₂O)₂] (M = Co (1), Ni (2), and Cu (3)) by using the 4-amino-1,2,4-triazole Schiff-base ligand via the hydrothermal methods. They are all mononuclear compounds with the octahedral geometry. Direct-current magnetic and HF-EPR measurements were combined to reveal the negative D values (-28.78 cm^-1, -10.79 cm^-1) of complexes 1 and 2, showing the easy-axis magnetic anisotropies of compounds 1 and 2. Applying a dc field of 800 Oe at 2.0 K, the slow magnetic relaxation effects were observed in compound 1, which is a remarkable feature of single-ion magnets.

Low pH constructed Co(ii) and Ni(ii) 1D coordination polymers based on Cα-substituted analogues of zoledronic acid: structural characterization, and spectroscopic and magnetic properties

Three novel coordination compounds based on α,α-disubstituted analogues of zoledronic acid with a cyclopropane (cpp) or cyclobutane (cbt) ring on the C_α carbon, isomorphous [Co(H₂cppZol)(H₂O)]·H₂O (1a), [Ni(H₂cppZol)(H₂O)]·H₂O (1b) and [Co(H₂cbtZol)(H₂O)]·H₂O (2a), were synthesized under hydrothermal conditions at low pH. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that all the compounds had a 1D double zig–zag chain architecture with an 8 + 8 ring motif formed by alternately arranged symmetrical (–O–P–O–)₂ bridges linking equivalent octahedral metal centres. Both the ligand coordination mode and chain architecture displayed by 1a, 1b and 2a are unique among 1D [M(H₂L)(H₂O)_x]·yH₂O coordination polymers based on nitrogen-containing bisphosphonates reported so far. All the compounds exhibit similar decomposition pathways upon heating with thermal stabilities decreasing in the order 1b > 1a > 2a. The IR spectra revealed that lattice water release above 227, 178 and 97 °C, respectively, does not change the chain architecture leaving them intact up to ca. 320, 280 and 240 °C. Magnetic behaviour investigations indicated that 1a, 2a and 1b exhibit weak alternating antiferromagnetic–ferromagnetic exchange interactions propagated between the magnetic centres through double (–O–P–O–)₂ bridges. The boundary between antiferro- and ferromagnetic couplings for the Co–O⋯O–Co angle in 1a and 2a was estimated to be ca. 80°. This value is also applicable for recently reported [M₃(HL)₂(H₂O)₆]·6H₂O (M = Co, Ni) complexes based on α,α-disubstituted analogues of zoledronic acid and can be used to the explain magnetic behaviour of 1b.

High pressure studies on bis(l-histidinate)nickel(II) monohydrate

Raman spectra of bis(l-histidinate)nickel(II) monohydrate crystal were obtained for pressures up to 9.5GPa. Our results show the disappearance of some of the Raman modes and the appearance of other modes. These modifications evidence that the sample undergoes phase transitions at around 0.8 and 3.2GPa. The role played by the Ni ions and hydrogen bonds in the dynamics of the phase transitions is discussed. Under decompression, down to atmospheric pressure, the original Raman spectra are recovered, showing that both phase transitions are fully reversible.

Magnetic Properties of a Dinuclear Nickel(II) Complex with 2,6-Bis[(2-hydroxyethyl)methylaminomethyl]-4-methylphenolate

Magnetic properties of dinuclear nickel(II) complex [Ni₂(sym-hmp)₂](BPh₄)₂·3.5DMF·0.5(2-PrOH) (1), where (sym-hmp)^- is 2,6-bis[(2-hydroxyethyl)methylaminomethyl]-4-methylphenolate anion and DMF indicates dimethylformamide, were investigated using high-frequency and -field electron paramagnetic resonance (HFEPR). To magnetically characterize the mononuclear nickel(II) species forming the dimer, its two dinuclear zinc(II) analogues, [Zn₂(sym-hmp)₂](BPh₄)₂·3.5DMF·0.5(2-PrOH) (2) and [Zn₂(sym-hmp)₂](BPh₄)₂·2acetone·2H₂O (2'), were prepared. One of them (2') was structurally characterized by X-ray diffractometry and doped with 5% mol nickel(II) ions to prepare a mixed crystal 3. From the HFEPR results on complex 1 obtained at 40 K, the spin Hamiltonian parameters of the first excited spin state (S = 1) of the dimer were accurately determined as |D₁| = 9.99(2) cm^-1, |E₁| = 1.62(1) cm^-1, and g₁ = [2.25(1), 2.19(2), 2.27(2)], and for the second excited spin state (S = 2) at 150 K estimated as |D₂| ≈ 3.5 cm^-1. From these numbers, the single-ion zero-field splitting (ZFS) parameter of the Ni(II) ions forming the dimer was estimated as |D_Ni| ≈ 10-10.5 cm^-1. The HFEPR spectra of 3 yielded directly the single-ion parameters for D_Ni = +10.1 cm^-1, |E_Ni| = 3.1 cm^-1, and g_iso = 2.2. On the basis of the HFEPR results, the previously obtained magnetic data (Sakiyama, H.; Tone, K.; Yamasaki, M.; Mikuriya, M. Inorg. Chim. Acta 2011, 365, 183) were reanalyzed, and the isotropic interaction parameter between the Ni(II) ions was determined as J = -70 cm^-1 (H_ex = -J S_A·S_B). Finally, density functional theory calculations yielded the J value of -90 cm^-1 in a qualitative agreement with the experiment.

Two Cu(II) compounds have been characterized by structure analyses and DFT/TD-DFT calculations. Both the complexes potentially bind with CT-DNA and corresponding binding constants are in the order of 10⁵ M⁻¹.

Direct Observation of Very Large Zero-Field Splitting in a Tetrahedral Ni(II)Se4 Coordination Complex

The high-spin (S = 1) tetrahedral Ni(II) complex [Ni{(i)Pr2P(Se)NP(Se)(i)Pr2}2] was investigated by magnetometry, spectroscopic, and quantum chemical methods. Angle-resolved magnetometry studies revealed the orientation of the magnetization principal axes. The very large zero-field splitting (zfs), D = 45.40(2) cm(-1), E = 1.91(2) cm(-1), of the complex was accurately determined by far-infrared magnetic spectroscopy, directly observing transitions between the spin sublevels of the triplet ground state. These are the largest zfs values ever determined--directly--for a high-spin Ni(II) complex. Ab initio calculations further probed the electronic structure of the system, elucidating the factors controlling the sign and magnitude of D. The latter is dominated by spin-orbit coupling contributions of the Ni ions, whereas the corresponding effects of the Se atoms are remarkably smaller.

Binary and ternary new water soluble copper(II) complexes of l-tyrosine and substituted 1,10-phenanthrolines: effect of substitution on DNA interactions and cytotoxicities

Binary and ternary water soluble copper(II) complexes - [Cu(nphen)2(H2O)](NO3)2·H2O (1), [Cu(phen)2(H2O)](NO3)2 (2), [Cu(nphen)(l-tyr)(H2O)]NO3·2H2O (3), [Cu(phen)(tyr)(H2O)] NO3·2H2O (4) - and diquarternary salts of nphen and phen (nphen=5-nitro-1,10-phenanthroline, phen=1,10-phenanthroline and tyr=l-tyrosine) have been synthesized and characterized by CHN analysis, (1)H NMR, (13)C NMR and IR spectroscopy, thermal analysis and single crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. The CT-DNA binding properties of these compounds have been investigated by thermal denaturation measurements, absorption and emission spectroscopy. The supercoiled pUC19 plasmid DNA cleavage activity of these compounds has been explored by agarose gel electrophoresis. The cytotoxicity of these compounds against MCF-7, Caco-2, A549 cancer cells and BEAS-2B healthy cells was also studied by using XTT method. The complexes 1-4 exhibit significant high cytotoxicity with low IC50 values in compared with cisplatin. The effect of the substituents of phen and coordinated amino acid in the above complexes are presented and discussed.
