Abstract
The coordination system of rare-earth n-tuple decker phthalocyanines would be better suited with appropriate metal ions with the correct coordination number and the solvent system of the reaction, amongst other reasons, for the formation of n-tuple decker phthalocyanines. As a result, these complexes are very rare. In this manuscript, we present new n-tuple decker phthalocyanines in the form of double- (complex 2), quadruple- (complex 3a) and sextuple-decker phthalocyanines (complex 3b), all of which contain neodymium and cadmium metal ions. The primary focus is the investigation of the nonlinear optical (NLO) mechanisms responsible for the observed reverse saturable absorption. While the extension of the π-electron system has been found to enhance the nonlinear optical behavior of complexes 3a and 3b, a change in the NLO mechanisms has been observed, with complex 2 lacking the triplet state population, as revealed by a laser flash photolysis technique. It has also been established that the excited state absorption cross sections follow a clear order of magnitude for the complexes under investigation: σ 23 (for 3b) > σ 23 (for 3a) > σ 1m (for 2). This trend evidences the effects of the extension of the π-electron system.

Abstract
For the purpose of further exploring the effect of nonperipherally attached substituents on single-ion magnet (SIMs) performance, tetrasubstituted bis[1,8,15,22-tetrakis(3-pentyloxy)phthalocyaninato]terbium double-deckers, in both the reduced form TbH[Pc(α-OC5H11)4]2 (1) and the neutral form Tb[Pc(α-OC5H11)4]2 (2), were prepared. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis for 2 unambiguously demonstrates the pinwheellike molecular structure with C4 symmetry. Magnetic investigations of the two bis(phthalocyaninato)terbium double-deckers reveal their characteristic SIM nature. 2 exhibits SIM performance superior to that of 1, as revealed by the larger energy barrier of 466 K for the former species and 431 K for the latter species due to the presence of organic radical-f (radical-Tb) interactions. The enhanced SIM performance of 2 in comparison to 1 actually stems from the presence of radical-f interactions and an enhanced ligand field strength. The latter positive factor is indicated by the electrostatic potential around the terbium ion on the basis of density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Abstract
The non-peripherally substituted 1,4,8,11,15,18,22,25-octa(butoxy)-phthalocyanine-involved unsymmetrical heteroleptic bis(phthalocyaninato) terbium double-decker, Tb(Pc){H[Pc(α-OC4 H9 )8 ]} (Pc=unsubstituted phthalocyanine) (1), was revealed to exhibit typical single ion magnet (SIM) behavior with effective energy barrier, 180 K (125 cm-1 ), and blocking temperature, 2 K, due to the severe deviation of the terbium coordination polyhedron from square-antiprismatic geometry. Fabrication of this double-decker compound into the novel tetrakis(phthalocyaninato) terbium pseudo-quadruple-decker Na2 {Tb(Pc)[Pc(α-OC4 H9 )8 ]}2 (2) single molecule magnet (SMM) not only optimizes the coordination polyhedron of terbium ion towards the square-antiprismatic geometry and intensifies the coordination field strength, but more importantly significantly enhances the molecular magnetic anisotropy in the unsymmetrical bis(phthalocyaninato) double-decker unit, along with the change of the counter cation from H+ of 1 to Na+ of 2, leading to an significantly enhanced magnetic behavior with spin-reversal energy barrier, 528 K (367 cm-1 ), and blocking temperature, 25 K. The present result is surely helpful towards developing novel tetrapyrrole lanthanide SMMs through rational design and self-assembly from bis(tetrapyrrole) lanthanide single ion magnet (SIM) building block.

Abstract
The design of self oxidation-resistant catalytic materials based on organic molecules, although advantageous due to the ability to control their structures, is limited by the presence of labile C–H bonds. This mini review summarizes recent work aimed at first-row transition metal complexes of a new class of coordinating ligands, fluoroalkyl-substituted fluorophthalocyanines, R[Formula: see text]Pcs, ligands in which all, or the majority of their C–H bonds are replaced by a combination of fluoro- and perfluoroalkyl groups yielding porphyrin-bioinspired catalyst models. In the case of homogeneous systems, cobalt(II) complexes catalyze the aerobic oxidation of thiols to disulfides, a reaction of both biological significance and industrial importance. Zinc(II) complexes photo-generate excited state singlet oxygen, [Formula: see text]O[Formula: see text], resulting in both the incorporation of O[Formula: see text] in C–H bonds or, depending on the reaction parameters, oxidation of dyes, model pollutants. Catalyst heterogenization using oxidic and other supports yields stable, active hybrid materials. Functionalized R[Formula: see text]Pcs with acidic (–COOH) or basic (–NH[Formula: see text]R[Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] 2) groups exhibit scaffolds that afford both conjugation with biological vectors for theranostic applications as well as solid-supported materials with superior stability. Electrodes modified with hybrid R[Formula: see text]Pc-containing supports have also been used in photo-oxidations, replacing enzymes and H[Formula: see text]O[Formula: see text] associated reagents with a combination of light and air. An analytical device employed for the nano-level detection of environmentally deleterious antibiotics has been constructed.

Abstract
Bulky and strong electron-donating dibutylamino groups were incorporated onto the peripheral positions of one of the two phthalocyanine ligands in the bis(phthalocyaninato) terbium complex, resulting in the isolation of heteroleptic double-decker (Pc)Tb{Pc[N(C4H9)2]8} {Pc = phthalocyaninate; Pc[N(C4H9)2]8 = 2,3,9,10,16,17,23,24-octakis(dibutylamino)phthalocyaninate} with the nature of an unsymmetrical molecular structure, a square-antiprismatic coordination geometry, an intensified coordination field strength, and the presence of organic radical-f interaction. As a total result of all these factors, this sandwich-type tetrapyrrole lanthanide single-ion magnet (SIM) exhibits an overall enhanced magnetic performance including a high blocking temperature (TB) of 30 K and large effective spin-reversal energy barrier of Ueff = 939 K, rendering it the best sandwich-type tetrapyrrole lanthanide SIM reported thus far.

Abstract
We report the synthesis, redox and photo-physical properties, as well as singlet oxygen reactivity of the first representatives of Group III perfluoroalkyl perfluoro metal phthalocyanines, gallium and indium complexes. Microwave-assisted synthesis was used to produce F[Formula: see text]PcM, M [Formula: see text] Ga, In in reasonable yields. Both Ga and In complexes exhibit high thermal and chemical stability properties, attributed to the perfluoroalkyl perfluoro phthalocyanine ligand. Electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical measurements show reversible redox processes for both compounds, including spontaneous re-oxidations following electrochemical or photochemical reductions. No electrochemical or chemical oxidations of the neutral complexes are observed. Photo-hydroperoxidation of ([Formula: see text]-(-)-citronellol occurs with rates of 13.5 and 1.7 [Formula: see text]mol O2 min[Formula: see text] mol[Formula: see text] Pc and substrate turnovers of 225 and 28.2 mmol ([Formula: see text]-Cit s[Formula: see text] mol[Formula: see text] Pc for the In and Ga complexes, respectively. The solid state materials are stable and can be sublimed at temperatures higher than 380°C. Related complexes are candidates for similar chemistry and photophysics based on the observation that the fluorinated ligand determines most of the favorable properties.

Abstract
Perfluorophthalocyanines incorporating three-valent metals, namely In(Cl), Ga(Cl), and Al(Cl), have been synthesized and characterized. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed that these compounds exhibit outstanding thermal stability and a tendency to sublime at a temperature exceeding around 350 °C without thermal decomposition. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) were used to probe the frontier orbital energy levels of these compounds in THF solution. All three compounds undergo three quasi-reversible reductions with the first one leading to the formation of an anion radical, namely MPc(-.) , as confirmed by spectroelectrochemistry. The compounds studied were intrinsically resistive to oxidation, which indicates that they are very good electron acceptors (n-type materials). The HOMO-LUMO energy gaps (Eg ) of the three compounds determined by UV/Vis spectroscopy were relatively unaffected by the three-valent metals incorporated into the phthalocyanine macrocycle. Similarly, the energies of the HOMO (EHOMO ) and LUMO (ELUMO ) orbitals remained virtually unaffected by the three-valent metals in the perfluorophthalocyanine. Importantly, all the perfluorophthalocyanines studied possess LUMO levels between -4.76 and -4.85 eV, which makes their reduced forms resistant to electron trapping by O2 and H2 O. This property opens up the possibility for the fabrication of electronic devices operating under ambient conditions. All three compounds demonstrated very good photostability as solid thin films.

Abstract
We report field-dependent magnetization measurements on monolayers of [Dy(Pc)2] on quartz, prepared by the Langmuir-Blodgett technique. The films are thoroughly characterized by means of X-ray reflectivity and atomic force microscopy. The magnetisation of the sample is measured through the magnetic circular dichroism of a ligand-based electronic transition.

Abstract
With the coordination geometry of DyIII being relatively fixed, oxygen and sulfur atoms were used to replace one porphyrin pyrrole nitrogen atom of sandwich complex [(Bu)4N][DyIII(Pc)(TBPP)] [Pc = dianion of phthalocyanine, TBPP = 5,10,15,20-tetrakis[(4-tert-butyl)phenyl]porphyrin]. The energy barrier of the compounds was enhanced three times, with the order of DyIII(Pc)(STBPP) > DyIII(Pc)(OTBPP) > [(Bu)4N][DyIII(Pc)(TBPP)] [STBPP = monoanion of 5,10,15,20-(4-tert-butyl)phenyl-21-thiaporphyrin, OTBPP = monoanion of 5,10,15,20-(4-tert-butyl)phenyl-21-oxaporphyrin]. Theoretical calculations offer reasonable explanations of such a significant enhancement. The energy barrier of 194 K for DyIII(Pc)(STBPP) represents the highest one among all the bis(tetrapyrrole) dysprosium SMMs, providing a strategy to rationally enhance the anisotropy and energy barrier via atom replacement.

Abstract
Single-ion magnets (SIMs) are mononuclear molecular complexes exhibiting slow relaxation of magnetization. They are currently attracting a lot of interest because of potential applications in spintronics and quantum information processing. However, exploiting SIMs in, e.g. molecule-inorganic hybrid devices requires a fundamental understanding of the effects of molecule-substrate interactions on the SIM magnetic properties. In this review the properties of lanthanide SIMs in the bulk crystalline phase and deposited on surfaces in the (sub)monolayer regime are discussed. As a starting point trivalent lanthanide ions in a ligand field will be described, and the challenges in characterizing the ligand field are illustrated with a focus on several spectroscopic techniques which are able to give direct information on the ligand-field split energy levels. Moreover, the dominant mechanisms of magnetization relaxation in the bulk phase are discussed followed by an overview of SIMs relevant for surface deposition. Further, a short introduction will be given on x-ray absorption spectroscopy, x-ray magnetic circular dichroism and scanning tunneling microscopy. Finally, the recent experiments on surface-deposited SIMs will be reviewed, along with a discussion of future perspectives.

Abstract
The synthesis of trifluoroethoxy-substituted double-decker phthalocyanines was investigated for the first time. Trifluoroethoxy-substituted phthalonitriles reacted with lanthanide acetylacetonate hydrate in n-octanol in the presence of 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene when refluxed. La and Eu were chosen as central metals. Phthalonitriles, including one trifluoroethoxy substituent at the α- or β-position, were nicely induced to double-decker phthalocyanines. Phthalonitrile having two trifluoroethoxy substituents at α-positions did not react, although we succeeded in leading β-di-substituted phthalonitrile to double-decker phthalocyanines. Fully trifluoroethoxy-coated phthalonitrile did not react at all. Fluorophobic repulsion and steric hindrance caused by outlying trifluoroethoxy groups could be responsible for the difficulty in the formation of a double-decker structure. Absorption and fluorescence spectra of trifluoroethoxy-substituted double-decker phthalocyanines obtained were also investigated.
