Abstract
Here, a series of dinuclear N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) copper(I) complexes having 3,3'-(1,4-phenylenebis(methylene))bis(1-(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-imidazolylidene as bis-NHC ligand and bis[(2-diphenylphosphino)phenyl]ether (POP) as auxiliary ligand have been successfully prepared, and their photophysical properites were investigaged experimentally and theocitcally. The resulting complexes all exhibited intense green to yellow emission that originated from the thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) with a high photoluminescence quantum yield of up to 0.67 and longer excited-state lifetimes on the microsecond time scale in the solid state. Green and yellow light-emitting diode (LED) devices based on Cu(I) complexes have successfully achieved good color rendering indices. Moreover, the anti-counterfeiting patterns and QR codes made of Cu(I) complexes have been applied to clothing, banknotes, books and glass plates with excellent anti-counterfeiting effects.

Abstract
A series of Ru(III)-NHC complexes, identified as [RuIII(PyNHCR)(Cl)3(H2O)] (1a-c), have been prepared, starting from RuCl3·3H2O following a base-free route. The Lewis acidic Ru(III) centre operates via a halide-assisted, electrophilic C-H activation for carbene generation. The best results were obtained with azolium salts having the I- anion, while ligand precursors with Cl-, BF4-, and PF6- gave no complex formation and those with Br- gave a product with mixed halides. The structurally simple, air and moisture-stable complexes represent rare examples of paramagnetic Ru(III)-NHC complexes. Furthermore, these benchtop stable Ru(III)-NHC complexes were shown to be excellent metal precursors for the synthesis of new [RuII(PyNHCR)(Cl)2(PPh3)2] (2a-c) and [RuII(PyNHCR)(CNCMe)I]PF6 (3a-c) complexes. All the complexes have been characterised using spectroscopic methods, and the structures of 1a, 1b, 2c, and 3a have been determined using the single-crystal X-ray diffraction technique. This work allows easy access to new Ru-NHC complexes for the study of new properties and novel applications.

Abstract
![]()
We describe a synthetic
strategy for the preparation of bis-heteroleptic
polypyridyl Ru(II) complexes of the type [Ru(L1)2(L2)]2+ (L1 and L2 = diimine ligands) from well-defined Ru(II) precursors.
For this purpose, a series of six neutral, anionic, and cationic cis-locked Ru(II)-DMSO complexes (2–7) of the general formula [Y] fac-[RuX(DMSO–S)3(O–O)]n (where O–O
is a symmetrical chelating anion: oxalate (ox), malonate (mal), acetylacetonate
(acac); X = DMSO–O or Cl–; n = −1/0/+1 depending on the nature and charge of X and O–O;
when present, Y = K+ or PF6–) were efficiently prepared from the well-known cis-[RuCl2(DMSO)4] (1). When treated
with diimine chelating ligands (L1 = bpy, phen, dpphen), the compounds 2–7 afforded the target [Ru(L1)2(O–O)]0/+ complex together with the undesired (and
unexpected) [Ru(L1)3]2+ species. Nevertheless,
we found that the formation of [Ru(L1)3]2+can
be minimized by carefully adjusting the reaction conditions: in particular,
high selectivity toward [Ru(L1)2(O–O)]0/+ and almost complete conversion of the precursor was obtained within
minutes, also on a 100–200 mg scale, when the reactions were
performed in absolute ethanol at 150 °C in a microwave reactor.
Depending on the nature of L1 and concentration, with the oxalate
and malonate precursors, the neutral product [Ru(L1)2(O–O)]
can precipitate spontaneously from the final mixture, in pure form
and acceptable-to-good yields. When spontaneous precipitation of the
disubstituted product does not occur, purification from [Ru(L1)3]2+ can be rather easily accomplished by column
chromatography or solvent extraction. By comparison, under the same
conditions, compound 1 is much less selective, thus demonstrating
that locking the geometry of the precursor through the introduction
of O–O in the coordination sphere of Ru is a valid strategic
approach. By virtue of its proton-sensitive nature, facile and quantitative
replacement of O–O in [Ru(L1)2(O–O)]0/+ by L2, selectively affording [Ru(L1)2(L2)]2+, was accomplished in refluxing ethanol in the presence of
a slight excess of trifluoroacetic acid or HPF6. cis-Locked Ru(II)-DMSO
complexes bearing
a symmetrical chelating anion, such as [K] fac-[RuCl(DMSO−S)3(η2-mal)] (2), are suitable
precursors for the two-step selective preparation of bis-heteroleptic
polypyridyl compounds of the type [Ru(L1)2(L2)]2+ (L1 and L2 = diimine ligands).

Abstract
This study probes femto- and picosecond excited-state dynamics of a series of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligand-containing platinum(II) complexes of the type trans-(NHC)2PtII(CC-Ar)2, where CC-Ar is an arylacetylide. By using femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy, two dynamic processes are observed: an ultrafast singlet → triplet intersystem crossing (<0.3 ps), followed by geometric/electronic relaxation that takes place on a 2-10 ps time scale. The geometric/electronic relaxation is attributed to ligand torsional modes, mainly arising from twisting of the aryl units relative to the square-planar PtL4 unit. The dynamics of this relaxation process depend somewhat on steric constraints induced by substituent groups attached to the (benz)imidazole and phenyl ligands. The geometric relaxation dynamics slow with increasing solvent viscosity. The experimental studies also reveal that the different conformers can be photoselected by varying the excitation at different near-UV wavelengths. To corroborate the experimental findings, density functional theory calculations were conducted to probe the effects of geometry and steric hindrance on the ground-state energy surface. The calculations suggest that the barrier for torsion of the CC-Ar units increases as N-substituents on the NHC ligands increase in the order CH3 < cyclohexyl < n-butyl and as the CC-Ar units are substituted in the 3 and 5 positions with tert-butyl groups.

Abstract
Labelling phospholipid membranes with luminophores without altering the biophysical characteristics of the system is particularly challenging due to the small size of the phospholipid molecules and the sensitivity of membrane properties to the presence of fused heterocyclic molecules. Here the design and synthesis of a luminescent lipid mimetic Ir(III) N-heterocyclic carbene complex of the form [Ir(ppy)2(C^N)] (where ppy = 2-(phenyl)-pyridine and C^N is a N-heterocyclic carbene ligand) conjugated to stearic acid is described. This complex was synthesised by the reaction of an acetate functionalised Ir(III) precursor complex with tert-butyl N-(2-aminoethyl)carbamate (mono-BOC protected ethylene diamine) and after deprotection of the amine group this complex was coupled to stearic acid using the peptide coupling reagent 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide (EDC). The photophysical properties of the synthesised complexes were evaluated and they showed blue-green luminescence in the range of 514-520 nm. Fluorescence microscopy studies showed that the lipid mimetic complex successfully incorporated into liposomes composed of 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DMPC), while dynamic light scattering (DLS) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) studies showed that the complex had negligible influence on the biophysical properties of the liposomes.

Abstract
The synthesis and the steady-state absorption spectrum of a new pyridine-imidazolylidene Fe(II) complex (Fe-NHC) are presented. A detailed mechanism of the triplet metal-to-ligand charge-transfer states decay is provided on the basis of minimum energy path (MEP) calculations used to connect the lowest-lying singlet, triplet, and quintet state minima. The competition between the different decay pathways involved in the photoresponse is assessed by analyzing the shapes of the obtained potential energy surfaces. A qualitative difference between facial ( fac) and meridional ( mer) isomers' potential energy surface (PES) topologies is evidenced for the first time in iron-based complexes. Indeed, the mer complex shows a steeper triplet path toward the corresponding 3MC minimum, which lies at a lower energy as compared to the fac isomer, thus pointing to a faster triplet decay of the former. Furthermore, while a major role of the metal-centered quintet state population from the triplet 3MC region is excluded, we identify the enlargement of iron-nitrogen bonds as the main normal modes driving the excited-state decay.

Abstract
Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) refers to light emission induced by an electrochemical redox reaction. The stability, emission response, and light intensity of the ECL device are known to be improved by using an alternating current (AC) voltage. In this paper, an AC-driven ECL device is fabricated with DNA/Ru(bpy)32+ hybrid film-modified electrode. The Ru(bpy)32+ complex exhibits significant electrochemical reactivity in the DNA/Ru(bpy)32+ hybrid film prepared by electrochemical adsorption. The hybrid film contains unique micrometre-scale aggregates of Ru(bpy)32+ in DNA matrix. The physicochemical properties of the hybrid film and its AC-driven ECL characteristics in the electrochemical device are studied. Orange-coloured ECL is observed to be emitted from only the aggregated structures in the hybrid film at the high AC frequency of 10 kHz, which corresponds to a response time shorter than 100 μs.

Abstract
A novel ruthenium catalyst is introduced which contains solely achiral ligands and acquires its chirality entirely from octahedral centrochirality. The configurationally stable catalyst is demonstrated to catalyze the alkynylation of trifluoromethyl ketones with very high enantioselectivity (up to >99% ee) at low catalyst loadings (down to 0.2 mol%).

Abstract
We report the utilization of both pyrid-2-yl-imidazolylidene and dianionic bipz chelates as constituents in syntheses of a new series of charge-neutral Pt(II) complexes 1-4, among which complex 4 revealed remarkable triboluminescence, i.e., generation of photoemission upon grinding or cracking of the solid sample. The triboluminescence is found to be sensitive to the subtle changes of the associated substituents of pyrid-2-yl-imidazolylidene chelate, as verified by the disappearance of the triboluminescence for complexes 1-3. Alternatively, the well-ordered solid packing of 3, as indicated by the grazing incidence X-ray scattering experiment, serves as an ideal emitter for the fabrication of highly efficient OLEDs, rendering high external quantum efficienciy (25.9%) and luminesce efficiency (90 cd A-1) at the practical brightness of 100 cd m-2. The rather low roll-off in efficiency (24.4%, 85 cd A-1 at high brightness of 1000 cd m-2) is attributed to the short excited-state lifetime of 3 (∼800 ns) in the solid state, which in turn is associated with the MMLCT transition character.

Abstract
A series of Re(I) pyridyl N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes have been synthesized and examined in the photocatalytic reduction of CO2 using a simulated solar spectrum. The catalysts were characterized through NMR, UV-vis, cyclic voltammetry under nitrogen, and cyclic voltammetry under carbon dioxide. The complexes were compared directly with a known benchmark catalyst, Re(bpy) (CO)3Br. An electron-deficient NHC substituent (PhCF3) was found to promote catalytic activity when compared with electron-neutral and -rich substituents. Re(PyNHC-PhCF3) (CO)3Br was found to exceed the CO production of the benchmark Re(bpy) (CO)3Br catalyst (51 vs 33 TON) in the presence of electron donor BIH and photosensitizer fac-Ir(ppy)3. Importantly, Re(PyNHC-PhCF3) (CO)3Br was found to function without a photosensitizer (32 TON) at substantially higher turnovers than the benchmark catalyst Re(bpy) (CO)3Br (14 TON) under a solar simulated spectrum.
